Jellyfish / When These Memories Fade / coloured vinyl box set

1000 units only • One time pressing

Limited edition seven-inch coloured vinyl box set • 1000 units worldwide • One time pressing • Includes 64-page booklet

When These Memories Fade, is a new seven-inch singles box set celebrating the short, but amazing, career of early 90s American rock band Jellyfish.

Jellyfish formed in the late ‘80s out of the ashes of Beatnik Beatch, a power-pop band that included Bay Area high school pals Andy Sturmer and Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. That band released one album on Atlantic then split up, leaving Sturmer and Manning to their own devices. This resulted in Jellyfish, a band who were influenced by classic 1970s rock-pop, whether that be Wings, ELO, Queen, Badfinger or Elton John. Critically acclaimed, they struggled commercially in America in particular, where hair metal and grunge were the order of the day, although enjoyed reasonable success in the UK, even if only one single penetrated the UK top 40 (their debut ‘The King Is Half-Undressed’).

This new box set features all six UK singles, pulled from the two albums – 1990’s Bellybutton and 1993’s Spilt Milk – (including the 4-track ‘Scary-Go-Round’ EP) which are pressed on multi-coloured seven-inch vinyl. Additionally, a unique bonus seven-inch featuring two covers, one of which is ‘Think About Your Troubles’, a tribute to Harry Nilsson, recorded by Roger Manning Jr and Andy Sturmer in February 1994, a few weeks after Nilsson’s death (“it was the last thing Jellyfish did as a group”, Roger recalls).

The audio has all been remastered especially for vinyl and as well as the singles in picture sleeves, this box set includes a 64-page booklet with very detailed and entertaining track-by-track guides (not the same as those in the 2015 Omnivore CDs) from Roger Manning Jr, Jason Falkner, Chris Manning, Tim Smith, Eric Dover and band members and a newly written essay by Maura K. Johnston. The booklet is packed with previously unseen photographs, rare memorabilia and promotional items.

  1. I was sitting in the lobby of the dentist office waiting for my appointment when I thought I’d check my email. As soon as I saw the word “Jellyfish” I was all over it! Thank you for the email, Paul, because otherwise I would have missed out on this one. Considering how quickly this singles set sold out, here’s to hoping that the band will take notice and issue a similar vinyl LP box of the albums (fingers crossed).

  2. Loved the band. Wish Andy would get back to releasing albums again. I realize he’s happy doing his cartoon themes and songs but it just seems like a waste of talent-he’s a terrific singer and songwriter.

  3. Now that’s these singles boxes have sold out (everywhere, it would appear) and the pent-up demand for Jellyfish product is proven to be there, can the record company PLEASE pony up the readies for someone to do blu-ray Atmos releases for the albums? Not forgetting the B-sides, of course :)

I wonder if Steven Wilson is busy?

  4. So the gross revenue on this is £85,000 — roughly $100k — which hardly seems worth it for the band members after the record company margin? Kind of sad and surprised if this is normal for this kind of thing now?

  5. After thinking about it, I came back to see if there were any still available, there weren’t as I expected.

I was going to bite the bullet but I’m not that disappointed even though I’ve been a Jellyfish since I first heard ‘The King Is Half Undressed’ However I doubt I would ever have played the singles, the box would remain on the shelf with the other 20+ single box sets I already own. All unplayed after the first opening and look. Anyhow I have all the CD singles.

I am happy that they have sold out so quickly as it may encourage the release of these singles on a compilation CD and maybe another box set similar but more expanded than the ‘Fan Club’ box set. This release shows the fans are still there and happy to buy Jellyfish product.

  6. Glad I didn’t hesitate to buy this yesterday. Given how fast these have sold out in advance, I am wondering if another edition of 1000….in black vinyl might now be announced? It won’t contravene any of the assertions of the coloured vinyl pressing for that reason. It’s the sort of thing I would expect to happen.

        1. Not everybody has a chance to act on e-mails the moment they come through. Maybe Mark had a deadline at work. Or kids to put to bed. Or something. But, yes, he could have been a bit less sarcastic in his tone.

So is there any chance SDE will get any more of these boxes, Paul? There appears to be an appetite for them.

          1. What did Mark expect me to do different, is the question?

To answer the second question, no I can’t get any more since all 1000 are apparently now sold out at the distributors.
We had a decent allocation and the product was available for 7 hours on SDE not 5 minutes.

          2. I think Mark was frustrated and only wanted (or needed) to vent. He probably didn’t need or expect a response. It’s the kind of message best left unanswered (or even unpublished).

Back to topic at hand, I had no interest to buy this as I don’t know Jellyfish that well (only remember a few songs) but I’m surprised it’s already sold out. Especially for a box set in the £75-100 range. I didn’t know Jellyfish had so many fans waiting to buy this.
It kinda piqued my interest. I’m now going to listen to that first album online to see if I missed something 30 years ago…

          3. They were all sent at the same time, so complain to your internet service provider not SDE.

      1. I was only venting because it was so frustrating to miss out. I didn’t even know it was available anywhere else. Limited Editions are always maddening when they sell out so quickly.

  7. Wish they would put out vinyl reissues of ‘Bellybutton’ and ‘Spilt Milk’, and also possibly reissue the ‘Fan Club’ box set. Their singles were great, but they were not their best work. Those two albums in their entirety sum up what was great about Jellyfish. Also, a shame Andy Sturmer isn’t involved.

    1. Omnivore did vinyl reissues of both titles several years ago, plus a Live at Bogart’s double album and a radio sessions album (the latter two of which cherry picked material from the Fan Club box set and appended extra new material).

Oh, and they released the backing tracks for both studio albums as a 2CD set (no vinyl, AFAIK) for RSD one year. 2014?

  8. One of my favourite bands. Could’ve been my favourite band if they’d only kept together for a few more albums. Have everything they every recorded – some of it several times over (LP, CD, deluxe CD…).

Do I therefore need this boxed-set? No.

Do I WANT it? Hell yeah!!!

  9. Joining a fanclub is a big mistake…

Well, the title font on the box art is ‘interesting’ and doesn’t appear to carry across to anything else in the set. Having just Andy and Roger on the cover is a curious choice, though I don’t believe I’ve seen that photo before so that’s something. A really nit picky issue would also be that the photo of the booklet is of a page talking about Spilt Milk singles but the opposite page has a band image from the Bellybutton era. Yeah, I know. Quite like the label design on the singles themselves and it’s nice that it seems to carry over to the ‘covers’ single (can we assume the other side of the singles just has the band logo?)It’s been an age since we’ve been resold any of this stuff, so this is appreciated. Like a few others, that ‘remastered for vinyl’ has caught my attention. I have the omnivore pressings of the albums but it’d be great for them to be back in circulation.

  10. Jellyfish is my all-time favorite band. From, “1000 units only,” “One time pressing”, and the heartbreaking title, “When These Memories Fade,” how can I resist? I guess one of the great mysteries of collecting is absolutely needing something you absolutely don’t need.
Pre-ordered. I love my new mistake.

  11. Pre-ordered from SDE, thanks for the heads up Paul. Yes it does seem expensive at first but the short one time run does make it worth it especially with that very attractive book. I bought the Gun Club vinyl singles box set which was a bit less but still about £65 and well worth it. I’ve also downloaded my auto rips of all three Lickerish Quartet CD EPs onto a CDR and it plays very well as a 50+ minute album which it surely should have been to start with? Nice to have as three items as well though.

    1. The only thing I prefer less than EPs is singles (unless of course they are packaged together in a colorful box)! All the TLQ EPS are combined in the Japan-only release that just arrived on my doorstep today. I should say almost all, because the vinyl only has ten tracks. However, the CD has all twelve, plus two bonus songs: “So Like Candy” and “Sugar Me”. In that vein, maybe they should be The Licorice Quartet instead!

      1. Yes, frustrating that the TLQ Japanese LP only has 10-songs, but even if it had all fourteen tracks you’d still want to keep the EPs for the instrumental sides….

  12. Sorry Paul, but the sentence with “from Roger Manning Jr, Jason Falkner, Chris Manning, Tim Smith, Eric Dover and band members” is a bit odd considering you mention all band members except Andy Sturmer. But I’m not surprised if he’s not involved with the track-by-track guides, so that’s not the issue. :)

      1. OK, I’ll try to be more clear: Let’s say it was a Beatles box and you wrote that it featured “amusing comments from John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Ringo Starr, Pete Best and members of The Beatles”.

        1. Maybe just give up. My comment was entirely accurate. The people named feature, some others not named feature. Andy Starmer doesn’t feature (if he did he would have been named). The end.

  13. Nice piece, one of my fave bands ever, but cannot purchase at this very moment…cruise booking in a day or two plus San Diego flight…if and only if there are copies left in a couple of weeks, I will buy it then…if not, oh well…I do wonder if this is the beginning of renewed Jelly activity of reissues??

  14. It’s obviously my problem and I can choose to buy or not buy but isn’t £85 for 7 singles and a box a bit stiff for a band that sold nothing first time around that’s £12 a pop . Enlighten me people and yes I bought both lp’s back in the day .

  15. Ordered – loved Spilt Milk back in my college days. As a side note shipping is more expensive to the USA on the New Land store (the band’s label) than via Paul, so order through him.

  16. My first purchase from the SDE shop. One of my favourite bands and one you wish more people were aware of their genius. Mind you it’s also nice to introduce people to them. Amazing melodies and hooks galore. They should have been huge.

Many thanks for the heads up on this Paul.

  17. Wow, this is fantastic… might this mean their catalogue is being reviewed for other possible reissue activity? 5.1/Atmos versions of their two albums (SO ripe for this treatment) would be my holy grail!
