Joan Osborne / Relish reissue

relish2

Joan Osborne‘s 1995 album Relish will be reissued as 20th anniversary vinyl and CD editions later this month.

The GRAMMY nominated album will come as an expanded single CD featuring three bonus tracks; the original demo of transatlantic top ten hit One of Us, a demo version of Pensacola in a completely different, reggae style featuring the entire band, and the previously unreleased track, Mighty One, from the Relish recording sessions.

Irritatingly, for SDE readers and fans of physical product, a 20-track digital bundle offers five further bonus tracks, the previously unreleased Here Comes What’s Coming (recorded at the same time as Relish) and four B-sides: a version of One of Us, performed for WXPN’s World Café; St. Teresa and Spider Web, both recorded for KSGR in Austin; and a live version of Crazy Baby. Presumably, they ran out of space on the CD, since the standard 12-track album runs to around 61 minutes.

The double vinyl is album-only with no bonus tracks. I’m assuming the album has been remastered although there has been no specific mention of this anywhere…

The reissue will feature expanded liner notes written by Chris Talbott and is released on 30 October. This appears to be a US/Canada only release and is available in UK/Europe only as a pricey import. British fans might be interested to know that the CD is cheaper from Amazon Canada than Amazon UK if you choose standard shipping (you won’t incur any import charges). Although you do only save about £4 and will have to wait weeks for the CD to turn up!

  1. Such a shame…

The reissue of RELISH was a great opportunity for Mercury and for us fans of Joan, to have a complete collection of this great album, the different live B-Sides, and outtakes….

There were at that time (1995 – 1996), several live B-Sides:

    CD Single “One Of Us”
“Crazy Baby” 8’06” (Recorded at AAA Gavin Convention, Fox Theater, Boulder, CO)

    CD Promo “Ladder”
“Spider Web” (Live) 5’27” (Recorded live at 107.1 KSGR Radio Austin)
“One Of Us” (Live) 5’10” (Recorded live at WXPN World Cafe)
“Crazy Baby” 8’06” (Recorded at AAA Gavin Convention, Fox Theater, Boulder, CO)

CD Single “St. Teresa” PART ONE
    “Spider Web” (Live)
    “St Teresa” (Live)

CD Single “St Teresa” PART 2
“One Of Us” (Live) 5’10” (Recorded live at WXPN World Cafe)

CD Single “Right Hand Man” PART 1
    “Right Hand Man” (Live)
    “Ladder” (Live)

CD Single “Right Hand Man” PART 2
“Lumina” (Live) 3’26” (Recorded live at The Troubadour, KSAC Radio, Los Angeles)
“Pensacola” (Live) 6’18” (Recorded live at The Troubadour, KSAC Radio, Los Angeles)

All these Maxi CDs are still foundable on Ebay or elsewhere, but unfortunately, the Limited Edition of RELISH – AUSTRALIAN TOUR EDITION, released in 1996, is very hard to find. It was a double CD, the first CD was the album, the second CD was a 5 tracks live EP, the first track was recorded at The Troubadour, L.A., but no more information about the other tracks. The 5 tracks were:
    “Pensacola”
    “Help Me”
    “Right Hand Man”
    “One Of Us”
    “Spider Web”

So we can make a list which contains:
“Spider Web” (Live) 5’27” (Recorded live at 107.1 KSGR Radio Austin)
“One Of Us” (Live) 5’10” (Recorded live at WXPN World Cafe)
“Crazy Baby” 8’06” (Recorded at AAA Gavin Convention, Fox Theater, Boulder, CO)
    “St Teresa” (Live)
    “Right Hand Man” (Live)
    “Ladder” (Live)
“Lumina” (Live) 3’26” (Recorded live at The Troubadour, KSAC Radio, Los Angeles)
“Pensacola” (Live) 6’18” (Recorded live at The Troubadour, KSAC Radio, Los Angeles)

    “Help Me” LIVE
“Right Hand Man” LIVE (maybe the same version as the one on CD Single)
“One Of Us” LIVE (maybe the same version as the one on CD Single)
“Spider Web” LIVE (maybe the same version as the one on CD Single)

So we have 9 live tracks, maybe until 12 live tracks, from the various Singles and the Australian edition.

To these tracks, we can add the bonus tracks from the new edition:
Bonus tracks on expanded CD / Digital bundle
    One of Us (demo)
    Pensacola (demo)
    Mighty One
    Here Comes What’s Coming

If only Mercury have released a COMPLETE deluxe edition of RELISH, it would look more like that:

CD 1: RELISH – THE ORIGINAL ALBUM
    St. Teresa
Man in the Long Black Coat
    Right Hand Man
    Pensacola
    Dracula Moon
    One of Us
    Ladder
    Spider Web
    Let’s Just Get Naked
    Help Me
    Crazy Baby
    Lumina

    CD 2 LIVE B-SIDES, DEMOS & OUTTAKES
    One of Us (demo)
    Pensacola (demo)
    Mighty One
    Here Comes What’s Coming

Maybe for the 30th Anniversary Edition…

    1. I suggest “Strenuous Acquaintances”

They forgot to include “Strenuous Acquaintances”, an unreleased song written by Joan herself and theme from a movie in 1996.

  2. For a 20th Anniversary Edition – this sucks big time! I will stick to the original CD because there is not much gained from buying this reissue.

  3. This should have been a 2CD reissue. Disc 1 could have been the original album (obviously) plus the two new songs, with the second disc made up of demos and live tracks.

As it currently stands, this ‘deluxe’ edition could take the title of ‘worst deluxe edition ever’ (and that’s saying something, given some of the godawful reissues from Mr Gabriel, Ms Lauper et al.)

  4. I don’t know if this is even worth mentioning, especially since this is barely a deluxe edition. IMHO there are many other deluxe editions coming up worth mentioning more than this.

  5. Back then I liked her One Of Us single. Never bought other of her singles/albums. So I’m not buying this neither. But it is so ridiculous lame. A 20th ann. edition, that’s what they can come up with! Most live tracks can be found on her (promo) singles:

One Of Us (live) 5:13 St. Teresa CD-Single
St. Teresa (live) 4:14 another St. Teresa CD-Single
Spider Web (live) 5:27 another St. Teresa CD-Single
Crazy Baby (live) 8:06 One Of Us CD-Single

    Ladder Promo CD-Single
    1. Ladder – Radio Edit 3:56
    2. Spider Web – Live from 107.1 KSGR Radio Austin 5:27
    3. One Of Us – WXPM World Cafe 5:10
    4. Crazy Baby – Live from AAA Gavin Convention, Fox Theater 8:06

    The album 61:06 + 4 live track 23:00=84:06

They could have included these on as bonus tracks on the CD & perhaps the easier/easily obtainable live tracks as downloads (live travks mostly are of less/lower quality than studio tracks)!

    One of Us (demo)
    Pensacola (demo)
    Mighty One
    Here Comes What’s Coming

  6. Thanks Paul for posting. This is an insult for everyone supporting the physical release. My personal opinion is that this album is a piece of crap anyway so no, I will not be getting this. I’m saying this because sometimes I THINK that something is a piece of crap and an SDE comes out and I buy it anyway and find myself liking it. I guess they call that Prejudice. That won’t be happening with this release.

  7. I was really excited about the prospect of this when I first saw it mooted… And now I’m not :(

I’m a big fan of Joan’s entire output – it’s a shame people are put off by One of Us, which I quite like, but which isn’t really indicative of her material (even of the rest of the stuff on this LP) as a whole.

I’ve never managed to source one of the Right Hand Man cd singles, so even if this had just contained all the stuff commercially released at the time, I might well have bought it. And the prospect of two previously unreleased songs would have been quite a pull, had they have both been on the bloody CD.

So no sale to me, unfortunately.

  8. “Irritatingly, for SDE readers…”

Like many others, I’m a reader of SDE but please don’t mistake us all as fans of this MOR crap.

    1. I meant fans of physical product, which are presumably most SDE readers. Obviously there is a built-in assumption that you will have to like the album as well!!

  9. Why in the world would they make one of the previously unreleased tracks digital only?!?!?!? That’s ridiculous! Who cares about demos when you could have a completely new song?!?!?!?!?!?! ARGH!!!!!!!

  10. They have to be joking…

Buy the album used for pennies, and all the CD-singles likewise, and compile your own. It’ll cost a fraction of the £18.99 they’re asking for this nonsense.

  11. Sod digital tracks – not interested! I want my music collection on solid formats with high quality sound, such as CDs and Vinyl and NOT low quality compressed files.

  12. Such a great album (and yet further proof that The Hooters are one of the best US Bands out there – studio and/or live). Sad that the live tracks (many I’ve heard from other sources) won’t be included in the physical version.

  13. Wow! (in a sarcastic way) – 2 demos and 1 bonus track on the “expanded” (kind of) CD reissue. I for one will stick with the original CD if this is all that is being added to a 20th anniversary edition. Might as well not have even bothered putting this out as it is a sham of a release!

  14. They’re trying to double dip, plain and simple. They don’t want to go through the expense of making it a double CD so they make a digital version that you have to buy for the extra tracks. If they offer the digital tracks as separate items it might be acceptable but that will probably not be the case. I’ll just keep my original and skip this one.

  15. Churlish of them not to include some of the bonus tracks on the vinyl.
If they’d split the album over three sides of the vinyl (four songs each side) it could have left Side Four for a few bonus tracks – maybe the two demo tracks and the two unreleased songs.

Richard Thompson did something along those lines with his ‘Electric’ vinyl release.

  16. Äh what? Not funny. This is an awesome album and 5 bonus tracks not available on cd and supposedly not available in germany. I’ll pass and keep my original cd version. Somehow i’ll get the songs nevertheless.
