Hi, I have a general question about Dolby Atmos which some of you may be able to help me with. I currently don’t have a Dolby Atmos soundbar (but have bought a handful of the SDE Blu Rays so I can hopefully enjoy all of the different mixes at some point soon). Can anyone recommend a good soundbar (for music) for an average size bedroom on a budget of around £300? Thanks folks! PS Really looking forward to receiving Elton John Diamonds and the Thompson Twins Into the Gap!
I hope there’s enough demand to press more copies of the Blu-ray Audio disc. I clicked the “Tell me if you get more stock” button and submitted my email.
Just thought I would let you all know that The Human League are currently working on an Atmos mix of Dare. According to the latest issue of Classic Pop it should be out soon, hopefully on an SDE blu ray eh Paul?
OMG
With Love & Dancing alongside in Atmos, please…
Hi Paul, I have a question about the Duran Duran blu-ray – I know this page is for the Thompson Twins blu-ray, but I’ll ask it here anyway.
Has something happened with the forthcoming ‘Danse Macabre’ Deluxe re-issue? I signed up for the ‘Let me know…’ second chance option. A few days ago, I recieved an email saying a few copies were available, but when I clicked the link I got a ‘page not found’ message.
So I went to the SDE Shop website and noticed the ‘new’ blu-ray isn’t listed at all – only the original 2023 blu-ray. That seems very odd. If it’s sold out it would just say so, but it’s disappeared altogether. Is there a problem?
I apologise if I’m being rude.
No problem… We had to take the listing down for technical reasons. A few back in stock emails were triggered but sadly this is totally sold out. I’ll monitor interest and see if there’s enough demand to do another small run…
In the past I have preferred the big band of the early records, but this blu-ray is simply too good not to get, and I welcome the opportunity to have the case for this album made in such a glorious format, especially with the additional tracks from the triple CD. This is how it’s done. These do set the bar almost impossibly high for other (non-SDE-exclusive) blu-rays, and when I bought, for example, The Best of the Doors blu-ray recently, I imagined how much better it could have been had some SDE-level care been put into it. I will be checking the mail box eagerly for this one.
Thank you.
I have just ordered the Blu-ray Audio of “Into The Gap”.
I have to credit Paul for really bringing this format to the forefront. I had little more than a passing interest in blu-ray audio before this series, with exception to XTC. It just goes to show that there is no substitute for product made by someone with a real passion for the music. This edition far exceeds the unimaginative bare bones approach that blu-ray audio discs generally were done previously. This series has definitely taken this format to new heights. This set is definitely one to not sleep on.
Thanks very much!
I am also convinced that thanks to Paul/SDE other labels have started releasing blu’s more frequently.
Yes we had some in the past but now they are much more prominent the forthcoming Cure CD/Blu set for example…
What a deal this is. The 3cd, plus regular album and instrumentals in Atmos. A complete box set on one blu-Ray.
Indeed! It’s a box set without a box, using all the capacity of Blu-ray at a reasonable price point. No weird mixing of formats tick!, no dreadful live albums that I’ll never listen to tick!, just the album in multiple streams tick!, instrumentals tick!, all the bonus tracks you ever wanted tick!, and a price that doesn’t break the bank, tick! It doesn’t get much better than this. More, please! Thank you!!
All stereo tracks in 96/24 NO TICK. I know this is not down to you Paul, it’s what the record company makes available to you. This is 2024, over two decades since SACD and DVD-Audio came out and we are now getting just 48/24. We got let down on the Lament CD/DVD box set by Ultravox. There were 7 CDs and a bare bones DVD, yet you could download all of the audio at 96/24. Come on record companies, it’s just not good enough in 2024.
Audiophiles are their own worst enemy. Thank god I’m not one. I’m sure you are right Gary and of course we all want the best quality audio available. It’s just that you take away some of your own joy by being irritated that the stream isn’t the absolute highest quality available. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not arguing we shouldn’t have the best quality but I hate to be annoyed before I even start listening because the stream isn’t 96/24. And do you really hear the difference? Im sure your answer will be a firm “yes” but Im glad mine is no. Life is just more enjoyable that way.
No 576/192, no sale. ;)
In all seriousness, multiple studies have shown that the human ear cannot discern the difference between 48/24 and 96/24, but there are those who think they can, and perhaps they do! I’m sure that many think that the bigger numbers indicate a higher quality listening experience, but in my experience that hasn’t been the case. (However, my amps do go to 11. That’s better than 10.)
I doubt most people can hear the difference to be honest. After 52 years, my hearing is adequate, whether it’s 96/24 or 8 & 3 quarters over pi, my ears wouldn’t notice!
Agree 100% and I can actually tell the difference between the audio of CD versus SACD. They say it’s not discernable, but it is to me. I’m lucky, I guess.
With regards to the stream quality, most of the music is generated on 16 bit synths so bumping it up to 96/24 is not a good idea according to a producer I asked. He said that better quality isn’t about numbers, it’s getting the best from the source material.
And, again, this is a fantastic Blu-ray, 10/10 to BMG, Paul and all involved. I can’t wait to hear it and hope that we’ll continue to see a lot more bonus tracks on future releases. Hint for BMG: Blow Monkeys on Blu-ray? Animal Magic in Atmos?!
I couldn’t agree more!
I have had a preference for vinyl for 40 years now but my preference is now firmly Blu Ray.
I am 2 channel only and an audiophile but often the 5.1 folds down to an enjoyable dynamic stereo mix which is great if the only stereo mixes on the disc are horribly limited/compressed.
Whilst I always rip the Blu Ray streams to my NAS I still like owning my music physically so Blu Ray meets all my criteria.
I am happy with 24/48 but 24/96 is preferred.
Paul I applaud you both in terms of what you are trying to do and your dedication.
Heaven 17 albums 1 & 2 please……
Your puny human ears can’t perceive any difference between those sample rates, no matter how many times you tell yourself they can. This is especially true if your twenties are behind you.
There is a perfectly good reason why the specs for a CD were chosen all those years ago and making the numbers bigger won’t make anything sound better.
@SimonP
My ears are far from puny and seem to grow with age, probably to capture more sound wavs….lol I do however still have exceptional high frequency hearing even at 53.
Now whilst you are correct that no human can hear anything much above 20 kHz it is also true that frequency cut off brick walls are not “natural” and in the analogue space the brick wall can have an impact on the replay of frequencies you can here. On this basis it is better to move the cut off as far away from the upper end of the human hearing as you can, hence in theory 24/96 will be better here. Also higher sampling rates enable the use of slow gradual filters rather than fast filters and I prefer the sound of a slow filter. Of course DAC up sampling can enable this.
Funnily enough my dog definitely prefers 24/96 though…..
There is a perceptible difference to the sound isn’t there? I can hear it, most people can’t. I have had bad eye sight since birth, I think my hearing made up for it.
It’s a very small difference. I think and mastering plays a much more important role here as will system and room acoustics.
16/44.1 can sound fantastic and 16 bits means a 90 dB dynamite range which is way beyond what is required in a domestic environment. 24 bits simply gives you more headroom to avoid clipping during the recording stage.
I think the key point is you want the audio at the same spec as the final mix/master to avoid any further additional processing and this I think is the critical consideration.
I did a blind test by ripping a DVD Audio 24/96 stream to 24/96 and 16/44 and comparing the two. I was able to identify the 24/96 80% of the time but this may say more about the impact of the additional process. Note I checked the 24/96 ti ensure it actually had frequencies above 22kHz.
What’s interesting is even most 24/96 have nothing much above 30 kHz and have still clearly been through a frequency brick wall it’s just that the wall is further from the threshold of human hearing. There are downsides to sampling above 48 kHz and many DACs filter above 30 kHz.
