Level 42 / Forever Now coloured vinyl LP

Limited numbers pressed on silver/black marbled vinyl

Level 42s 10th studio album, Forever Now, will be released as a limited edition coloured vinyl pressing next month.

The long-player was issued in 1994 on RCA/BMG, but was never released on vinyl in any major territories, although strangely Discogs does indicate a that a Columbian pressing exists. The album was reissued in 1996 (on the Resurgence label) on CD with a revised/expanded track listing and then in 2009 Edsel released a two-CD expanded edition.

This new vinyl edition is pressed on 180g silver/black ‘marbled’ vinyl and maintains the original 11-track version.

‘Forever Now’ reached number 19 in the UK charts in 1994

Forever Now was the last Level 42 album to feature Mark King, Mike Lindup and Phil Gould (the latter returning for this record). While the band were by this point far from their commercial peak, the album still spawned three top 30 singles in the UK with the title track peaking just inside the top 20.

This new pressing is limited to 1500 units worldwide, comes with an insert and is numbered. It will be released by Music On Vinyl on 20 August 2021.

  1. Surprised this is still available. Only 1500 copies seemed very small. I thought there would have been more than 1500 Level 42 collectors out there. The three singles were good but really don’t remember much of the rest of the album, although The Sunbed Song gets a regular airing at live shows. Went to the farewell show at Royal Albert Hall in ’94. I got quite emotional. So glad they came back. Far too young for them to retire. Did Phil Gould perform on this though? I thought he only came back as a songwriter. I thought Gary Husband was the drummer at this point. Looking forward to this though. As with all other vinyl releases of this kind, it will get added to my catalogue, remain sealed and I shall feel proud that I was one of the fortunate 1500. My wife thinks I’m strange but she’ll just never understand.

    1. I am not sure if 1500 copies is not a lot… Midge Ure soundtracks came out 2 years ago and is still widely available on vinyl, and it was only on 750 copies https://superdeluxeedition.com/news/midge-ure-soundtrack-1978-2019-2cddvd-anthology/

Just wondering, do you still care about the mastering and sound quality if you don’t open it? I usually buy to play but sometimes i am also tempted not to open it. In most cases I either sell them or open them eventually.

      1. I wish I did care more about mastering but don’t. I understand the reason for remastering vinyl but not sure what the incentive is for record companies. Is it about the limited edition or the superior sound quality? If it’s about superior sound quality then why not just issue it on standard black vinyl and make it widely available.

    2. He’s the only drummer listed on the credits. I saw them on this tour and Gavin Harrison was the drummer! Not Phil, of course, but a very accomplished substitute… Record company didn’t want Phil, apparently…

    3. Gary Husband left the band in 1992, Mark King reached out to Phil not long after. The first demos/recordings were done in Dec 92. Both Phil and Mark played drums on this album but Phil didn’t want to tour so Gavin Harrison joined them for touring duties.

  2. I just streamed this album on youtube (not available on usual platforms) and even though it’s much better than what I expected, every single related track (b-sides, extras, remixes) are better than what’s on the album. So yes, I would go for an expanded CD but not for this. I found there have been expanded CDs on discogs but they are very rare and expensive… (And despite saying this I do have the album in my basket and went to the checkout a few times, but didn’t click for payment yet. A nicer cover and colour would also have helped).

Also stumbled on Sirens. Seems like one of the best albums/EP they ever made. Wonder if they will ever make anything new.

  3. Hhmmm… Maybe if they released it with a new cover… I don’ t know, something like Mark King on a beach wearing a red bikini bottom and jumping over his friend Mike Lindup taking a picture of him from the ground…

You know, same concept as David Sylvian’ s recent reissues.

      1. The Ocean Colour Scene post still only has 4. A band I , and apparently most here, had not heard of, or about which wished to comment. I missed so much music while raising my 2 kids but I also find little of it really grabs me when I do hear it.

  4. Hi and my first post. Thank you for this great site Paul
After the disappointing Guaranteed, Forever now was a welcome return to form. Mark and Mike had clearly missed Phil’s input into the songwriting. I agree that a deluxe version with the additional Resurgence tracks would have meant that this would have been a no brainer to purchase. One can always hope. (I have been a Level 42 fan for 40 years and would love a 40th anniversary reissue of the debut album as this too would be 40 on August the 1st.)

  5. This is a great album. I remember vividly the first time I heard the first single (Forever Now) on the radio and thinking, Phil’s back! Nice to have it on vinyl. The omitted tracks (originally b-sides but added on the Resurgence version) are all brilliant as well, too bad they probably won’t see a vinyl release…
