Monterey International Pop Festival 4CD set

In 1967, during the so-called ‘Summer Of Love’, 200,000 fans gathered on the Pacific Coast in California for a three day music festival and enjoyed performances from The Jimi Hendrix Experience, The Who, The Mamas And The Papas, The Byrds and Jefferson Airplane, to name but five.

This Monterey Pop Festival set from Salvo Music, celebrates the festival with a 70-track selection across four CDs and comes complete with an 88-page booklet. Great value at around £15 at the time of writing.

  1. I’d been wanting a CD format of Otis Redding’s Monterey performance for years, now I finally have it. I have the record of his and Jimi Hendrix’s performance which was phenomenal by both artists but now I’ll be able to listen to it while I’m in my truck. I do a lot of long distance driving and the entire CD will make my travels much more enjoyable.

    1. Alan 2, I have been looking for Lou Rawls live performance from the Monterey Pop Festival for almost 25 years since I heard an original recording in the late 1980’s on the Radio. It had an intro, a kind of monologue that Lou Rawls is famous for doing. He talked about Rock and Roll and how what he was doing was something new, “This is Rock and Soul”. I wonder if you could let me know if the song version on this box set is actually the original Lou Rawls set from Monterey as I had heard that it was lost? If so does he do the talking intro and mention the “Rock and Soul” thing? Any help would be appreciated.

  3. Not as smart as the 12×12″ box version issued back in the mid 90s, but that was far more expensive. Since I missed that, I’ll almost certainly get this – it’s a snip at £15, even though it includes far too much Mamas & Papas.

    1. There is no such thing as “too much Mamas & Papas.” :-)

      However, I will admit that their tracks from Monterey were horribly recorded.

  4. This was originally released by Rhino in 1992 to celebrate the event’s 35th anniversary. It came in a 12 x 12 box coated in yellow vinyl with a book of the same size. It appears all that set’s original tracks are collected here (as any Simon & Garfunkel tracks are conspicuously absent), and apparently the 88 page booklet would duplicate the original set’s contents! And the price is much less than the ’92 release!
