  1. I managed to get a copy over here in the USA. I’m a bit ho hum about the vinyl. Although its flat and crackle free, I find the sound quality all over the place. Some tracks sound pretty good, whilst others sound horrible, with some really weird EQ. Its not very dynamic either. I guess its better than nothing, but if you missed it, I wouldn’t seek it out unless you are a die hard fan.

On the plus side, I did get the included booklet

  2. Just received a poor response from MOV about the missing booklets.

    Hi
    Very sorry to hear.
If you have a defective/incomplete record, please return it to the shop where it was bought,
as we don’t carry our own stock.
All our records are with the various distro’s.
F.y.i.: we do have a qc (1 in every 75 copies or so get checked) unfortunately we can’t check every record that leaves the pressing plant.
We are very sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused.

p.s: The shop can ask his local distro for a replacement / booklet.
His distributor will surely help him out.

Can SDE shop ask for missing booklets.

Even a PDF or scan of the booklet would be something for those of us who haven’t seen it.

  3. I think I managed to track down probably the last copy in the UK earlier this week and having received it in the post today, of course, there’s no insert. Ridiculous that this issue has affected so many copies…

  4. I was initially a little less than impressed that a triple album resides in a single pocket sleeve. However the vinyl sounds great and I have had great fun with the remix disc. I had all of these back in the day, including (I would swear to it although memory fades) a 12″ picture disc of When a heart Beats. As with my other favourite artists I had great fun compiling a TDK SA90 of all of the 12″ remixes, b-sides and 7″ double packs including my favourite “Fusion” Tracks (Look Behind you……).

So once I got over the grumps about the sleeve I was OK with it all, would have preferred picture inners but they have gone with the next best thing, poly-lined. Plus I am one of the lucky ones with what is only a 4-page booklet, but still worthwhile fighting for as it’s not bad for what it is. Particularly as the labels don’t have the track listing, which is reprinted on the booklet. 8/10 (lost 0.5 of a point for omitting any single mix of Human Racing)

  5. Before I was aware that there are a lot of missing inserts, I emailed MOV to ask for a replacement.
100% agree with Paul with regards to NOT returning the item to the shop where purchased.

    This was MOV reply:

    1. I have made my own enquiries and hoping to persuade MOV to do the right thing here. That’s a bit of a cack-handed response, if we are being honest.

  6. Paul, are those that have missing booklets likely to get this resolved. I really don’t wish to have to return the album. But this has taken all the excitement out of this release sadly.

    1. Returning the album is not a good idea. Stock was cut everywhere (including SDE) and you’ll never get another one. Even my copy doesn’t have the booklet. I have asked MOV what they intend to do.

      1. Guido14, definitely heed Paul’s advice on this unless you really don’t want any copy at all. I learned this lesson the hard way with the ‘Hormonally Yours’ multi-CD box set six months or so ago. Mine shipped with 2 copies of one disc and no copy of another. Townsend advised me to return the whole thing for an exchange, which I did… and then turned around and said ‘sorry, no copies left to replace it with, so we’ve auto-refunded your card. Goodbye’ – and my enquiries about whether they could instead send me my flawed copy back to me on a ‘better than nothing’ basis was met with ‘sorry, can’t – it’s gone back to our supplier and there’s no way we can get it back from them – Case closed’. So I’m wary of parting with a compromised copy of a music item I really wanted until I’m sure of not being left completely empty-handed and unable to ever get another copy if I do. (What added insult to injury was I later learned Townsend had offered a simple send-out of the missing disc to other customers without them needing to send their box back. And no – they didn’t refund the P&P, just the item cost – not a huge amount but I was actually left effectively out of pocket compared to never having ordered it). You get MUCH better service from SDE shop.

        1. I didn’t return it. But the wonderful guys at SDE shop in customer services kept on the case. After a lot of kind emails I got a copy of the booklet sent in the post. Perfect condition and now housed in the album. Took a lot of emails to MOV and SDE but the latter came up trumps fortunately. Going the extra mile really gives me a buzz and I will always consider them for future purchases.

          1. I also had the booklet sent to me by the online independent shop that I ordered from. The two emails that I sent to Music On Vinyl remain unanswered which is very poor.

        2. you returned it because it was faulty so they have to foot the cost of return distance selling rules if you changed your mind and didn’t want it then you have to pay return postage

  7. Seems like not every copy was part of the booklet issue. Mine came with a booklet but I ordered at a German online store.

Apart from a little date mistake (Ei8ht was of course released in 2012 and not 2006), the liner notes appear to be well researched. The whole release looks very well made and Nik’s label was involved.

I hope this is a good sign for future re-releases (fingers crossed for expanded editions or vinyl pressings of CD-only albums)

    1. Firstly, thanks Paul for getting my copy dispatched for arrival on release date. Much appreciate. Thankfully mine turned up with the booklet. As @thekershfan says the booklet is well researched except for the above mentioned plus the photo of the 1991 reissue Wouldn’t It Be Good (NIK 14) is in the wrong place and the 1994 digital only reissue with a running time of 4.51 is missing. A nice piece and wonderful to see the different sleeves from around the world. This is a very exciting start to 2023 for us NK fans. I too would love to see 15 Minutes, To Be Frank, Then & Now, You’ve Got To Laugh and EiGHT released on vinyl but make sure the availability exceeds Oxymoron coloured vinyl.

  8. 2+2=5 coming.

The work put in for Essential and Collected (to test the water), including all the sleeve shots in the booklet, Nik’s Xmas message about reviewing 1984 video footage and the band tour this year…. Means a bigger Nik archival release is on the way in Autumn?

  9. Just received mine. Anyone else missing the 4 page booklet? Absolutely gutted. Hope they can send one out to me.

    Update:
Just had a message from SDE shop and it would appear none have got the booklet inside. An error with the distributor, so they are looking into this.

  10. Whilst I wait for this Kershaw beauty to arrive it made me think about the earlier editions to the collected series. They are among my favourite compilation albums and my thoughts turned to what would be an utterly brilliant addition to the series. So if anyone here has some sway over their decisions…..

Terry Hall: Collected. A side of The Specials, a side of The Fun Boy Three. A Side of The Colourfield, Terry, Blair & Anoushka, Vegas and other collaborations. Finally a side of his best solo work. It’s all there. Just about the best 20 to 24 tracks money could buy.

Go on MoV. It’ll sell buckets!

    1. The problem is those CDs have horribly loud mastering and are not comfortable to listen to.
The vinyl however, I was pleased to find, sounds great.

  11. Decent enough track selection, but isn’t Love Conquers All basically a Kim Wilde song with backing box from Nik?

I can think of dozens of Nik songs that could’ve been swapped out for this one.

  12. This is fantastic news! Whilst there are a few stables missing I will take any NK vinyl reissues. Hopefully, this leads to all his albums being reissued or issued for the first time on vinyl. Fingers crossed. Super exciting news with this and the 2 solo gigs with band.

    LP set ordered.

Do we know if Music on Vinyl currently has the rights to NK’s back catalogue?

    1. Probably, I mean how else could you do a career spanning release?

I was in contact with Cherry Red Records when they did the Howard Jones remasters, hoping that they were interested in doing similar re-releases for Nik. Turned out, Universal never replied when rights were requested.
But that was before UMC started releasing compilations again last year. So something definetely seems to be moving.

      1. I too have been in regular contact with Cherry Red about the back catalogues for Thompson Twins and Nik Kershaw about receiving the HoJo remasters treatment. Last week I sent another email and their reply was they are very keen but its all down to licensing. If the powers that be (and I am sure there a few) read these comments please come together, get the fans involved and release some incredible collections covering their careers.

  13. I notice if this ends up getting repressed without the 3rd record one of his big and popular songs ‘Human Racing’ is missing.Rather a big omission for a best of collection.
Also the 2nd LP is the more interesting as it has the more later stuff.Almost everybody already knows and has all the songs on the first lp,but lots of folk probably won’t know or have some of the songs included in the 2nd LP.
Would also have been a pleasant bonus if the two most known Kershaw songs he gave to others, namely ‘I am the one and Only’ (Chesney Hawkes)and ‘Oxygen'(Elaine Paige) had been offered. I am sure somewhere Nik versions will exist of these two fab tunes. I like both these songs so am disappointed Nik versions aren’t available.

    1. My suspicion is that when the initial print run sells out they’ll just repress it on coloured vinyl.

That way they get to keep the 3-disc set in print while technically not re-releasing the same set. Technically.

    2. It is a bit of a head-scratcher why they included Dark Glasses instead of Human Racing. The songs are about the same length, so space constraints don’t explain it. Could it be an error? If I were choosing a b-side, it would have been So Quiet!

      1. Agreed. Always thought Dark Glasses was at best an interesting curio – hardly essential.

So Quiet, Don’t Lie, and She Cries are all comfortably stronger tracks. But if we’re talking killer B-sides I’d personally have sprung for The Wrong Man.

        https://youtu.be/MnHdEtv5pFI

  14. Very exited for this. Though why they felt the need to put Dark Glasses on this line up. An ok B side but thats about it.

What I am interested to see is if the IWLTSGDOM Extended version is the original 1983 first 12″ version. Sadly never managed to get that on CD or digital either (unless someone knows something I don’t – it runs at around 6m00s) as the 2nd release (Extended Remix by Simon Boswell) normally appears. I have managed to get an original 12″ and it’s a better extended mix, but it’s a little crackly as I got it secondhand. Fingers Crossed it’s the original mix.

The rest of the set looks great. Would be great if all the albums got a vinyl reissue. As a collector I have all the 7″ and 12″ versions from the UK and all the MCA vinyl albums. But a freshen up would be awesome.

      1. Thank you. And what a bizarre compilation that is. The reason I never bought that version as it said Simon Boswell remix, so assumed not the first mix. But his mix has been edited as a single version. Never heard that before. Also two copies of the same mix of Human Racing on that compilation (I couldn’t tell the difference) I think I will download a few select tracks from this. Shame the 7″ mix of Dancing girls is still not on this or any other. With the ‘bobble’ intro and brass blast outro.

  15. Any Nik Kershaw release is a good day. There aren’t too many Kershaw releases and he is a brilliant artist. I think this is the first collection that include his later albums. Love his 80’s output but also his later albums are very good. His last album Oxymoron is absolutely brilliant. I highly recommend it.
One thing baffles me, his excellent albums Radio Musicola and The Works are wayyyy out of print and have never been reissued even though there is a wealth of remixes and probably b-sides, etc. A total shoe-in for Cherry Pop. What are they waiting for? I just read that “The Works” never entered the UK top 40. His label really must have done him a huge disservice because it has excellent singles (One Step Ahead, Elisabeth’s Eyes, One World shoulda been a single too). Howard Jones also dropped off the radar after 2 or 3 albums and look how all his earlier albums have been nicely remastered and expanded. Nik’s work deserves the same.

  16. Pre-ordered. Would like to think this opens the door for Nik’s ‘comeback’ catalogue to get some vinyl attention (15 Minutes in particular is a killer album).

And following that up with some blu-ray spatial releases would be the cherry on top :)

  17. Well that was the easiest sell ever Paul, I didn’t even bother to read the track list.

Great that all of his albums are represented which, given who holds the copyright for his later work, suggests that the man himself must have been engaged with this project.

Fingers crossed for enough sales to get a Radio Musicola box set on the road. Of all the albums this one could really benefit from a proper exploration, especially if Nik’s insistence that he scrapped everything and started again is indeed true.

    1. No chance I would wager if that is true, we are talking about a man who re-recorded his vocals for the live gig on The Riddle deluxe. If he didn’t like it then, he won’t now. Also, I don’t think the artists have much say anymore, unless they want to get involved, so he probably doesn’t even know.

    2. In his season’s greeting message that’s on YouTube, Nik mentioned that in early 2023, he’ll be remixing a 1984 gig for an as yet unspecified project – so I do wonder if a more expansive Human Racing reissue is on the cards, which I’d certainly welcome!

      1. Thanks for that John, no new album in 2023 then, which is a shame. I would agree a revised HR or Riddle set looks likely – perhaps just call it 1984!! Interesting that Collected has the 12s of Human Racing and Heart Beats, which Essential didnt, so the tapes are very much in play which is more evidence that something is going on.

  18. Shame no rare recordings demos etc..

More of tbe same, just previous stuff put onto vinyl, don’t get me wrong I’m a big Nik fan,but as a serious collector of another 80s keyboard artist, they have still so much unreleased rare archive stuff, that it’s about time they catered for the fans who got them where they are,and gave them success.

    I won’t be buying this.

Too many artists re-releasing stuff already on other compilations just another profiteering project.

And don’t forget I’m a big kershaw fan,so I saybtbese comments with a heavy heart and deep sigh!

  19. Whoever just bought it from you this morning Paul has put it straight on eBay for £65. As your shop is the only place it’s listed at this time must have got it from you. Copied and pasted your text as well for their listing. Collected are very desirable collections. I have a few myself (Carpenters, Level 42, Buddy Holly etc). This is another to add to that fine list. Nik is one of my favourite artists of the 80s and was my first live gig back in 1984!

  20. Interesting comp. Hopefully means that When A Heart Beats 12” will one day make CD if the master has been dug out again. All of those discs are going to be low volume, c.30 minutes per side universally from my calc.

    1. I am guessing they will be using the single versions and edits to keep each side at around 25 mins. If so there’s hope for the One World single version as it is shorter than the album version.

  21. Ordered that in a heartbeat. Thank you Paul.

Such a shame that they couldn’t get “Sometimes”, which is a great song with a great Nik vocal. I know it’s technically a Les Rythmes Digitales track, but it is a belter and would have fitted nicely somewhere.

This, as they almost say, is right up my wheelhouse.

Edit: Virtually all of the Collected series is excellently made and most of them have multi-artist contributions such as the Robert Palmer set has Vinegar Joe and The Power Station. Gerry Rafferty has Stealers Wheel and so on…. So it wouldn’t be too far a stretch to get LRD “Sometimes” on here. But it’s the smallest of niggles.

    1. It’s a top track, the almost Seal goes industrial “Damaged People” another highlight of that album.
Shame Stuart Price didn’t release more of his own material and concentrated on production duties although then again he almost made me a Take That fan with “Love, Love”.
