Out This Week / 30 June 2014
Pink Floyd / The Division Bell (7-disc box)
Pink Floyd’s 1994 studio album is something of a vinyl feast, but at least it also includes a 5.1 blu-ray and CD of the album.
The The / Soul Mining (deluxe vinyl box)
Nice to see a The The reissue. This Soul Mining vinyl box comes with a new remaster of the album (overseen by Matt Johnson) and an extra twelve-inch gatefold vinyl of alternative versions and remixes.
Bob Marley / Legend (vinyl / CD+Blu-ray reissue)
The headline act here is a brand new 5.1 remix of Bob Marley‘s Legend on Blu-ray Audio, but the coloured vinyl looks cool and all formats include two previously unheard alternate takes of Easy Skanking and Punky Reggae Party.
Bon Jovi / New Jersey (super deluxe edition)
This 2CD+DVD super deluxe of Bon Jovi‘s 1988 album New Jersey features unheard demos on the second disc and documentaries and promos on the DVD.
Monty Python / Total Rubbish (vinyl / CD box sets)
Some rather lavish Monty Python boxes release to cash in coincide with the nearly-upon-us London gigs. You can choose from a 9CD or a 9LP, and both come with a bonus seven inch single featuring content from their 1974 flexi-disc Monty Python’s Tiny Black Round Thing.
Sugar / Complete Studio Recordings 1992-95
This five-CD box contains set contains all three Sugar studio albums, a B-sides collection, and a live album all in CD size mini-replica sleeves plus a 36 page booklet.
- • UK Order: Complete Studio Recordings 1992 – 1995
- • USA Pre-order: Complete Studio Recordings 1992-95
- • GERMANY Pre-order: Complete Recordings 1992-1995
Simply Red / Deluxe Reissues and Blu-rays
Some excellent expansive deluxe editions of the Simply Red ‘noughties’ albums, including a 3CD+DVD edition of Home (featuring the hit Sunrise) as well as two concert performances offered in Blu-ray+DVD+2CD format.
Dream Theater / The Studio Albums 1992-2011 (11CD box)
The rock/metal band’s career is collected in this clamshell box with 10 albums from the period 1992-2011. CDs are in the usual ‘vinyl replica’ card sleeves.
David Gray / Mutineers (new album)
David Gray‘s first album for four years comes as a special edition three-CD set featuring two extra discs of classic live recordings including renditions of hit singles Babylon and Sail Away.
The DVD isn’t showing now in the PF eurostore under the Division Bell anniversary section. I hope everybody gets their copy.
Well my PF DVD of TDB has arrived on the dot today. Absolutely no expense has been incurred in the packaging! It is just a thin card slip cover – not as it appeared on the PF web store which if I recall showed it in a plastic case. Oh well ☺
Well that sounds crap. I paid £6 postage and packaging for that and they can’t even get it here on the day of release!
The Division Bell box set is nicely done aesthetically but still very expensive considering what’s in it and it being predominantly vinyl.
The booklet has no info just the lyrics and the prints are not of the greatest quality.
A CD/Bluray version and the standalone vinyl album would have been fine as anniversary editions with maybe 24bit downloads available via the store. The other vinyl in the box is just there to bulk it out and is totally superfluous.
I also received the Jethro Tull set (£17) and the Bob Marley set (£23) today, both are really nicely presented with tons more info and more useable audio for me than the Division Bell box and £80 cheaper. A similar design to those for a Division Bell Bluray package was easily possible but unfortunately the box just smacks of greed and I will be selling all the vinyl on eBay to recoup some money towards the bits I want to keep.
I got an email saying the DVD was backordered and expected to arrive within 30 days. Oh, well…
No album, no. DVD, no t-shirt or coasters and no e-mail for me. If I don’t hear anything by midday Tuesday I’ll be getting in touch. They’ve had my money six weeks ago.
It arrived!
As reviewers on Amazon have pointed out, the vinyl packaging is not great. 4 12″ x 12″ photos on the cover, similar photos on the inner sleeves. No text anywhere on the sleeves apart from disc one and disc two in small writing on the inners.
No track list, no songwriting credits, no musician credits.
The Download code directs to “error 404” web page.
The DVD is as described by others, but at least has a contents list on the back.
Seriously underwhelmed given the price tag.
At least I have the unboxing of an exclusive coaster set to look forward to. They’d better be good as I think I’ve paid about twenty quid for them.
