Sanada Maitreya, George Michael, Nik Kershaw & more

Sananda Maitreya playback event at Dolby
I was at a special playback of the Dolby Atmos Mix of Terence Trent D’Arby’s first album on Thursday night. Sananda was on the big screen ‘Zooming’ in from Milan and Martyn Ware (who produced the album and has created the Atmos Mix) attended in person, for a very interesting pre-playback chat. The pair discussed recording the album and a whole lot more. Sananda looked great, the glint in his eye remains and he was as articulate, and as charming, as ever.

One of the questions to Sananda was whether he would come and play in London again. His answer was that he had a ‘difficult’ relationship with London but if it was done in the right way, then it could happen. I was at his last London show, incidentally, when he was promoting ‘The Joker’s Edition’ of his 2001 WildCard album. That was in November 2002 (at the Forum). Twenty years. Wow. It was a great show but it wasn’t even full, which I found depressing.
There’s no news on a physical reissue campaign for Introducing The Hardline According To... but it must be happening. Most likely next year at some point. I had a chat with Martyn Ware after the playback. He’s very enthusiastic about Atmos and I told him he should try and ‘Atmos’ some of those classic Heaven 17 albums.

George Michael delayed again
George Michael’s Older reissue has gone back for a second time. The 1996 album was originally due to be re-released on 8 July. That went back to 12 August and the new date is now 16 September!
The official GM account put this down to “unexpected demand” and the full statement is below:
“The ‘Older’ release across all formats will now move for a final time to Friday 16th September 2022 to allow the unexpected demand to be met from fans across the world. We sincerely apologise for the delay and appreciate the patience, love and all the support you have shown”.

Shakespears Sister pre-order window is now closed
Thanks for the positive response to the Shakespears Sister Hormonally Yours blu-ray, which is #4 in the SDE Surround Series. The pre-order window is now closed, so this item is no longer available. I can confirm that this will be limited to 1500 units worldwide. There may be some further availability towards the end of September due to cancellations/contingency, but nothing is guaranteed.
Your ongoing support is appreciated and allows this series to continue. I can confirm that #5 in the SDE Surround Series will be announced in less than 3 weeks, so stay tuned!

Nik Kershaw Extended Mixes on streaming
This isn’t a physical release, but I thought it was worth mentioning that UMC have uploaded a 30-track Nik Kershaw ‘Extended Versions’ collection on Spotify. It’s got extended mixes, edited mixes, the lot… and covers the first four albums. It even includes the Extended Mix of ‘Wild Horses’ which Kershaw refused to allow to be included on the 2CD physical reissue of The Riddle in 2013. He may not have noticed this, because yesterday he said on twitter “Fill your boots, folks!”, while confirming he knew nothing about this initiative. There’s also a B-sides collection.

Kate Bush
Finally, SDE would like to wish Kate Bush a very happy birthday! She has good reason to celebrate this year, with the phenomenal success of ‘Running Up That Hill’. The song is still in the UK top 10 after nine weeks (beating the seven-week run of ‘Wuthering Heights’ in 1978) and is currently #3 in the US singles chart, as America radio starts to get behind the song. Amazing!

The Hardline… an utterly incredible album. SDE Atmos? OMG. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes ,yes, (ad infinitum).
I can’t say I followed TTD career as much as other artists but I did buy his debut album on the strength of the singles released at the time. I’ll be another one to vote ‘yes’ for a dolby atmos release.
Paul, any chance of getting an interview regarding the process creating a dolby atmos mix compared to a 5.1 discrete mix.
There is other Kershaw news that I didn’t see anyone mention so maybe it isn’t widely known (or I’m the last one to know). His whole catalogue (other than some rarities) is now available on YouTube Music, at least in North America. Until recently, The Works and 15 Minutes were missing. In the past, I had tried to figure out how to get Amazon UK to sell a download of The Works to me in Canada but no luck. The available catalogue includes Off The Shelf Part 1, which Paul kindly told us to watch for back in April. However, YTM goofed up so it’s not with his other music and can only be found by doing a search. Also available is the new Nik Kershaw remix of “The One And Only”. Despite YTM’s flaws, I think it’s the best streamer for completists like me because, when I’m making playlists (as I constantly am), I have 3 music sources from which I can include songs. First, there is obviously YTM’s library which has continually improved since those of us who were with Google Play Music were forced to switch over. Like many people, I was initially very unhappy with the change but I’m glad that I stuck around. Second, I can upload music from my own collection at home to fill some gaps in YTM’s library. Not just access it from my computer, like with Spotify, but upload it. Third, there are vast amounts of music, much of it rare, that has been uploaded by other users and is available to me. Some of the rare material is uploaded by the artists themselves or their representatives. Other streamers may have better sound or be better organized or whatever but I’m not aware of another service that would give me all of these options.
I have the original album on CD and vinyl plus a few of the 12″ singles for the mixes, I’ve always said it was crying out to be remastered and would make a great box set so hopefully it will see the light of day as a physical product as a box set. It’s a little known fact that Howard and Trevor Gray worked on some of the 12″ mixes particularly the ” 3 coins in a Fountain mix” of Wishing Well and Howard and Trevor would later go on not only remix U2’s Mysterious Ways, Even Better Than The Real Thing & One and as Apollo 440 which is what they later became.
Bit of a sideline but I got my replacement Elton Madman disc yesterday.
Yep, gets my vote.
Yes to a physical copy of According to the Hardline. Doesn’t seem that I can click on anything to register a vote though.
Duh! Realised not only that the voting was in a previous post, but that I had already voted for this anyway. :)
Love the Hardline – pleeeeeeeeeease release this – Snood is a big TTD fanboy from way back , saw him in Orlando years ago right before he moved to Italy. Best concert ever, even though most peeps were there to look koo and smoke cigars grrrrr. Have all his Sananda stuff toooooo on cd. Pleaaaaaaaaaaaase
Do you live in Orlando? If so, hello neighbor!
I would love for the next SDE BR to be the TTD album – don’t have Atmos though so would need to have a 5.1 on there too.
A busy Saturday Deluxe
I heard “Running Up That Hill” playing in one of the warehouse clubs the other day. Strange times….
It seems so many artists opt for doing atmos via streaming rather than hard copies.
Is this purely a financial reason?
I presume they think there isn’t any market for a physical version…
They’re stepping over Pound to pick up Pence.
I really hope that there will be a physical and expanded release of The Hardline.
I also hope that the Nik Kershaw digital only release will get a physical release. (Don’t shoot me but…) For those that do not have Tidal and prefer a lossless version of this release can purchase it at Qobuz.com
There MUST be a physical version of The Hardline…..
One of THE eighties albums!
Thanks for everything you do for us via this website, Paul, though my wife thinks different!!
Kate has been at number one in Ireland for 7 weeks in a row now!
Also, a digital-only release for Bowie Live In Berlin 1978 is coming in October along with a…*sigh*… grey-vinyl edition of Heroes to mark its 45th anniversary. Let’s hope there no “heat transfer” issues this time…
Great re Berlin. I assume they’ll get it running at the proper speed. I think the original tapes were running significantly slow. And they didn’t fix it for the LP. Was fine to play on DJ deck with adjustment but they are now stored away.
Alas it was I who tweeted at Mr. Kershaw about these releases – really good to have most of them all in one place and they sound good. Kudos to the whoever it was at UMG that actually entered in all the credits for all of the tracks. These can be neglected which is a bummer if you use a streaming platform like Tidal which allows you to see credits (and lyrics). So yeah, nice one.
And there are a lot of credits on Nik’s tracks, especially the horns which are led by the omnipresent 80s horn arranger Jerry Hey. Such a great combo with the synths.
There’s a great interview with Julian Mendelsohn on 80sography who rates Nik as one of the top artists he’s ever worked with and rather than doing a ‘dance’ remix of those tracks, they just played around with all the good stuff and extended it out (which to me is what 80s extended mixes are all about).
Thanks Andy for the tip off! :)
Spot on, remixes these days just seem to be totally off kilter and unappealing. Latter era Depeche in particular more a case of going with what’s current which doesn’t equal a decent alternative/mix. When you look back at classic New Order or early Depeche it’s a totally different case with absolute gems. I’m looking through my recent iTunes library and am hard pressed to find a remix by any artist I can rave about.
Have you heard of Johnson Somerset? Does some great old school style extended remixes. I’m sure a lot of these are semi-official, even if they don’t get physical remixes. Highlights for me: Duran’s Pressure Off, alt-j’s Left Hand Free (available on CD) and Daft Punk’s Lose Yourself to Dance.

Would love to have a physical copy of Terence Trent Derby’s debut album in Atmos Paul.
“Introducing The Hardline According To …” is Terence Trent D’Arby’s best album. It is one of my favorite albums of 1987 and it deserves to be re-issued.
I hope that there will be a physical release of Nik Kershaw’s “Extended Versions” collection. It is strange that they haven’t done this so far. I am sure that there are a lot of fans who like to add this to their collection.
Last year there was a live EP from Sinead O’Conner and the mentioned on the back-cover that there would be a deluxe version of “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got”. So far I haven’t heard anything about a re-issue for this album. Do you have more information about this one?
When it comes to the next Blu Ray Audio, I am thinking that it could be ABC “The Lexicon Of Love”. However I also would love to see Kate Bush “The Hounds Of Love on this format.
Despite a reported offer from Steven Wilson to do multi-channel mixes for KB, she has not shown any interest. I just wish she’d hear a comparison of an Atmos mastering compared to stereo. And with RUTH having pushed her into the spotlight again, you’d think now would be the time to make that move. Maybe she doesn’t need the money but I am sure her fans would welcome with open arms Blu-ray issues with hi-res Stereo 96/24, Dolby and DTS 5.1, and Atmos mixes of all her albums.
I would KILL for surround mixes of the Kate Bush albums, ditto ABC’s Lexicon of Love which would be brilliant in 5.1! :) Very much hoping that TTD will make it for a physical release too. I think its sad that the record companies seem to vastly under-rate the potential for 5.1 on physical media.
Martyn Ware making Atmos versions of classic Heaven 17 albums? Yes, please!
…plus the first two albums of The Human League, of course ;-)
Re the Nik extended versions release, what’s labelled as the the Simon Boswell extended remix is actually the other 12″ mix. The Human Racing versions are identical except for the Special Extended Mix having a slightly less keen fade out, hence the extra second (woohoo). And that extended mix of James Cagney seems like an “all faders up” rough mix before they wisely decided to declutter the production and tweak the drum arrangement. But good to see this compilation out there – it’s a joy to listen to the superb 12″ remix of “When A Heart Beats” again (how the hell did Nik’s best single only reach No.27?!?).
I know right? And ‘Nobody Knows’ is equally up there – such a great track.
While we’re on the subject of Dolby Atmos I’d appreciated any recommendations of Soundbars with Subwoofers and particularly one’s with 5.1 and Dolby Atmos.
I’m intending to spend about £800 on a player which has the ability to play DVD: Audio as well.
Many Thanks.
If you can accommodate it go for a 5.1 speaker system.
Morning. If I’m allowed to mention it, on YouTube check out Techmoans channel. He has bought and reviewed a Sony soundbar system and has recently upgraded his rear surround speakers for a more immersive experience. Might be something to give you some ideas.
For those who aren’t audiophiles (myself for one) I would add that even with an average setup the difference in blu-ray albums is a notch above. I have a 4K TV, 4K player connected to very average PC type speakers known as the “neighbour whisperers” in certain circles that are merely meant for volume and bass. My main library is on my PC from physical sources and good enough for my purposes but when listening between the last Moby release “Reprise” on CD/iTunes then bunging on the blu-ray as it had a documentary I was blown away by the difference in sound. This may be glaringly obvious to audiophiles or the tech savvy but for those, like myself, who aren’t that clued up it’s worth giving a go as your own home setup could be missing out.
Buy a copy of what hi-fi & look at what you think, meets your needs. Book a few demo’s at a local hifi dealer. Avoid stores that sell fridges & microwaves, unless you’ve already listened to the product properly set up.
Most dealers will allow a home trial. So tell them you’re requirements, as they can help steer you in the direction you’re aiming for, then you can test the kit in your own environment rather than a purpose built sound room. Probably better to buy the player & soundbar together as they’ll have better synergy & will burn in together. That way you will know what the end result is going to sound like (point of a demo…products already burnt in).
Hope this Helps.
Next blue ray audio could it be Upstairs at Eric’s Yazoo 40 th Anniversary and maybe for the one after Eurythmics Sweet Dreams 40th anniversary in the new year
Bloody good ideas both!
Having downloaded, and subsequently played on repeat for the better part of two days, I must admit that the Atmos mix of “…Hardline According” is a revelation to me and very thoroughly enjoyable to hear it with fresh ears, so to speak.
I am excited to hear about the Nik news too but even more so that those releases are available on the other platforms for streaming playback and download, and are not exclusively on ole Spot’y. I’m sure Mr. Hedges is correct about that missing mid of Dancing Girls but then again, there are four (!) mixes present. While that may be incomplete it is more than I will likely listen to after the first time through.
I love surround sound mixes. It can be amazing and open your ears to elements of songs that you hadn’t heard before. So yes up for the ATMOS mix of Introducing The Hardline According To... That said, I’d rather have an expanded CD deluxe edition of it first :-)
You were at the playback, this is already done and you chatted with Martyn Ware about a physical release of “Introducing”……
Methinks we can hazard a guess at #5 in the SDE Surround Series.
Just received my Finn LP with signed print this morning. Beautifully packaged by Townsend as usual but unfortunately the LP sleeve has a 2 inch split across the top. Aaaaagh! It’s amazing the amount of times this happens even with properly packed parcels. The vinyl is too loose in the sleeve and it moves in transit causing the split.
Just received my Finn LP. Cover looks fine but disappointingly the signed print was missing despite both the order and invoice confirming it should have been provided. Don’t hold out much hope of the order being fulfilled. :(
My Associates set was missing the cassette. 1 email later & it arrived in 2 days. Thanks Townsend
I got my signed print with the LP. Email Townsend. Hopefully they should send you the missing print. I ordered a Chrissie Hynde CD from them which arrived without the signed booklet I ordered. Contacted them and it got sent to me the same day.
Naturally needs a physical release. Clearly not now but I wonder what an Atmos mix could do for reimagining Neither Fish Nor Flesh…
In other streaming/download/non physical news, yesterday Light in the Attic released The Sweet Ride, a collection of 10 unreleased Lee Hazlewood demos and outtakes from 1965-1968.
Re: Nik Kershaw, What can the fans do to get these albums physically released?
Believe it or not there is still a mix missing. Track one is Dancing Girls (Edited Remix Version) which is a cut down version of the UK 7”, with the brass at the end. And I got excited seeing a remixed version in the track list. but this is just the album version, again. So I’m guessing the mix from the 7” is lost in the same cupboard with the master tape of Ultravox’s The Voice.
There are several edits missing from the NIKDJxx 7” original MCA singles and the Phil Harding 12 of Nobody Knows but at least the majority are out there now. My presumption is the MCA catalogue was all digitised for the Essential collection and this might be the cleaning out the closet. I wish it meant deluxes for Musicola and Works but I somehow doubt it now.
Good to see the 7″ promo only “I Won’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” Simon Boswell mix edit on there though, which is certainly the hardest of the Nik 7″ promos to track down.
Let’s not forget the 12″ of I won’t let the sun go down on me (re-release) that has bits of dancing girls in it. Weirdly an edit is included but not the main mix.
Odd, as if they are trying to avoid samey mixes, then the human racing 12″ mixes almost the same are almost back to back!
