Soft Cell’s Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret is the next SDE-exclusive blu-ray

Non-Stop Immersive Cabaret. #15 in the SDE Surround Series

Dolby Atmos Mix + bonus tracks • Instrumentals in Atmos • Original Stereo Mix Remastered • HD Videos • Only available via theSDEshop.com

Soft Cell’s 1981 album Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret is one of the most influential and iconic albums that emerged from the 1980s. I’m thrilled to announce that, in collaboration with EMI/UMR and the band, that a brand new Dolby Atmos Mix of the album and bonus tracks will be available via an SDE-exclusive blu-ray.

A critical and commercial success, Marc Almond and Dave Ball’s debut paved the way for countless synth-based music duos, fashioning something dark and distinctive with a hint of pop that helped kick-start a new decade.

The album features three massive UK hit singles including the chart-topping ‘Tainted Love’, the best-selling UK single of 1981 which enjoyed phenomenal success in America and helped open up the U.S. for alternative and electronic artists such as The Cure and Depeche Mode.

Initially released in November 1981, the 10-track song cycle, in the words of Marc Almond, “Tells a story of a bored ordinary bloke seething with his life wanting more and looking for excitement and adventure in a red neon lit Soho world of red-light cabarets, prostitutes and sex dwarves, looking back at his youth and wondering what happened.

This SDE-exclusive blu-ray audio edition offers you a Non-Stop Immersive Cabaret, featuring a brand new 2023 Dolby Atmos Mix of Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret created at Abbey Road Studios under the supervision of the band. Additionally, three non-album singles ‘Memorabilia‘, ‘Torch‘ and ‘What!’ are also included in Dolby Atmos. So this blu-ray includes all five of Soft Cell’s UK top 10 hits, in Atmos.

Furthermore, instrumentals of the album and the three bonus tracks are also included in Dolby Atmos and the same 13 tracks also feature in the original 1981 stereo mix, remastered. If that’s not enough, four original Tim Pope promo videos for ‘Bedsitter’, ‘Say Hello Wave Goodbye’, ‘Torch’ and ‘What!’, available physically in HD for the very first time.

Blu-ray content summary:

  • Dolby Atmos Mix of Album + bonus singles (Memorabilia, Torch, What!)
  • Dolby Atmos Instrumentals of album + bonus singles
  • Remastered Original Stereo Mix of album + bonus singles
  • Four HD videos: Bedsitter, Say Hello Wave Goodbye, Torch, What!

This Soft Cell blu-ray audio is No 15 in the ongoing SDE Surround Series and will be packaged the same as previous editions and ships with a free, collectible SDE Surround Series slipcase with the number 15 on the spine. Here’s the now traditional reminder as to why this blu-ray is highly recommended:

  • It’s the only way to enjoy the Dolby Atmos mix of the album via a physical product
  • You don’t need to sign-up to a streaming service such as Tidal or Apple Music to hear the spatial audio mix
  • The Atmos Mix on the Blu-ray is not compressed due to streaming bandwidth restrictions
  • You own the product, you are not renting it from a digital service provider
  • The Blu-ray audio is an excellent format for music and you don’t want to see it die off
  • Supporting SDE with these initiatives is leading to similar collaborations with labels/artists and we are keen to bring your more in the near future!

The SDE-exclusive Blu-ray Audio of Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret is a limited edition item. It will be pressed based on demand and due to the short lead time to manufacture, it will be available to pre-order for 10 days only. Availability after that cannot be guaranteed, so secure your copy today by pre-ordering at the SDE shop, either directly via this link or using the special SDE shop buy button (‘add to cart’) below. A selected number of still available similar products are listed below for your convenience (Trevor Horn has newly added 5.1 instrumentals!)

We ship worldwide, you can now pay in your local currency and there’s no longer any extra charges to the EU (if your order is worth less than €150).

Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret will be reissued on 1 December 2023 via EMI/UMR. Other vinyl and box set formats are available via the Soft Cell shop.

  1. Just had my first listen to the Blu in 7.2 and wow thank you, thank you, thank you Paul for bringing this beauty to us in surround. It really is exquisite as a whole package and easily ranks as one of my top three SDE surround series Blu’s.

  2. I’m seeing emails suggesting this has turned up at home.
Keen to hear what non-Atmos users make of it (I default to DTS normally).
Also keen to know how the playback meet-up went a few weeks ago ?

  3. Paul, thanks for making Soft Cell available again this week, I was so frustrated that I forgot to order it initially, so pre-ordered it right away yesterday.

  4. Shame the Sex Dwarf video wasn’t included, its been doing the rounds in bootleg form for years would have been nice to get a official release.

  5. Ordered 10 mins before deadline! Could not resist the opportunity to listen to this classic album in a different way.
    Thank you,Paul!
How about Kraftwerk ‘Die Mensch-Maschine’ or The Human League ‘Travelogue’ for future releases…

  6. Great release, with extra content , thank you Paul !

Just a remark, as some people have already said : i had no choice for the currency : it was in Euros ( bought from France) , and had extra charge for the conversion than before when the currency was in Pound.
And i must say , i prefer to keep reading “23£” instead of “27.95€” .

will it be possible for the next purchases to be able to choose the currency ? It would be a great feature .

Thanks again Paul for all you are doing, can’t wait to receive the Duran Duran blu-ray (hope it’s not delayed) !

  7. A bit disappointed that the 12″ mix of “Tainted Love / Where Did Our Love Go” didn’t make the cut. Not sure if this was an oversight or a Motown licensing issue.

  8. Thank you, Paul, for this fantastic release! Very happy about the inclusion of the instrumental versions in surround sound, and the non-album era singles.

Glad I hesitated about the Trevor Horn SDE Blu-ray; now that it has been confirmed it includes instrumentals as well as, I am sold.

So happy to have just ordered these two SDE exclusives, together in a combined order with the EBTG CD+BD I had missed out, and this at last without any import duties!

  9. Paul,
    Preordered this latest offering.
Thanks again for all you are doing.
Looking forward to Duran Duran and Trevor Horn. I’m still knocked out by the ABC release. Keep up the great work you and your team are doing.

  10. I am so so pleased that this is happening, Paul. Well done to you and everyone else behind this release. I’ll stop typing so I can go and pre-order this beauty….

  11. Once again kudos on another fantastic coup for physical media fans worldwide.
Begging alert: any chance to get the 12” mix of “Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go” included? It was a big hit here in The States & I have to believe elsewhere…
Thanks again for all of your efforts!

      1. I’m sure you tried!
        Killer release nonetheless :-)
Dreamtime: maybe an SDE Exclusive of ‘80’s 12” remixes is called for?!
        Keep up the GREAT work!

  12. I think it’s a shame that the 12″ mixes (like Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go and Tainted Dub) aren’t included on this disc. They’re coming out on the 6 CD set (they’re on disc 5). It would be great to have these original mixes as high def transfers included on this disc. Truly a missed opportunity. :(

  13. Placing an order, but just mentioning I noticed that when doing so I can no longer order in Pounds from the US, the pice then gets auto converted to dollars by the site ( $29 )in the cart to $30 at checkout and shipping goes from $8 in cart to $10 at checkout No big deal but … hopefully you are getting the “extra” cash.

    1. We introduced this feature because people were saying they would rather pay in their local currency But happy to continue to gather feedback and review over time. US shipping was never $8 it was £8 so it hasn’t increased…

      1. Hello Paul,

the fact that the prices at „The SDE Shop“ are currently not shown in GBP anymore but in the country currency based upon the IP address of the customer only is called „Dynamic Currency Conversion (DCC)“.

As the applied exchange rate is not the exchange rate stated by my bank as card issuer but by an intermediate/your bank that adds a surcharge on the exchange rate, it unnecessarily increases the total price.

I have liked to support you by buying your products.
However, I will not support any unnecessary price increase caused by this unfair DCC business practice disregarding how and between whom this surcharge is split.

I will continue shopping with you as soon as the prices are stated also in GBP again (i.e. when I can at least decide and choose whether I want to pay in my card currency or in GBP).

        1. You are free to do what you want. As I have said elsewhere this was introduced because the feedback we were getting was that people prefer to shop in their local currency. The exchange rate is a standard rate that Shopify use. At the end of the day price variances are going to be minimal. We will continue to monitor feedback.

          1. I tried that but it doesn’t work as conversion is based on the shipping address. Spotify is an expensive luxury. It resembles 3rd line forcing where you can only access product A by buying product B. In some jurisdictions this is an offence. I’m surprised they can get away with denying the right to the buyer to select their currency of choice.

      2. Thanks for the explanation. I just wondered if it was a glitch. No complaints here. The shop has definitely streamlined, and this new release is another SDE jewel. I really appreciate what you are doing here.

      3. Paul,

I think that what SG is saying is that there seems to be a shipping price glitch on the site when viewing your bag/cart. When you view your “bag” or “cart” it shows an estimated shipping figure that used have a pound symbol in front, but now has the local currency symbol, but the figure hasn’t changed. For example, for me it shows NZ$10 as the estimated shipping, where previously this would have shown as £10. If I then go to the checkout, it shows the correct converted shipping cost in my currency (which then becomes NZ$22).

        1. Thanks for pointing this out. It is showing the old GBP price but with a foreign currency symbol, so that is misleading. No shipping prices have actually changed but as you say it looks cheaper because of this glitch. I will look into this and address.

          1. I purchased from the US and the Blu-ray was $29 and the shipping was $10 for a $39 total which is less than it was for previous purchases that came out to $42 to $43 depending on the exchange rate.

          2. Just realized that is also the case in the order summary within the account. All my past orders now have the local currency symbol (EUR in my case) although the orders were placed in GBP before the change to local currency. Within each order it is still GBP.

      4. I get a really good conversion rate through my Aussie bank, so paying on the site in Aussie dollars has cost me quite a bit more than if I had paid in pounds. It’s going to really add up after a while.

It would be good if we had the option to select the currency we want to pay in. This is the first time i’ve not been able to do that when buying from overseas.

        1. I am with you colourbird. I am from EU/Germany and the automatic local currency conversion from GBP to EUR adds another 5 to 6.5% to the grand total when ordering 1 or 2 Blu-Rays. And that’s more than usual conversion rates of the local credit cards; the credit card I have does not even have a currency conversion fee.
Customer tastes may be different. But I would favor free choice of currency in the SDE shop and would continue to order in GBP to avoid these extra fees.

  14. I desperately want this but could someone enlighten me as to what is needed from a Blu-ray player to play Atmos mixes properly? I can’t seem to get a straight answer online. I don’t do soundbars and have a standard Blu-ray player hooked up to Bose 5.1 speakers. Do I need a specific Blu-ray player or one with specific output capabilities? Probably not the place for an audio equipment cry for help but any tips would be appreciated. Great choice for the next one Paul!

    1. First off you do not need a ‘special’ blu-ray player. Any will do. What you do need – if you don’t do soundbars – is an amplifier/receiver to sit between your Bose speakers, which, presumably you must already have? So it sounds to me that currently the Atmos Mix will fold down to 5.1 and should sound good. If you want to get ‘proper’ Atmos, you need to upgrade your amp to one that supports Atmos (not just 5.1) and then you need at some extra speakers, at least two at the front that either fire sound upwards (these normally sit on your main L+R front speakers) or two ‘height’ speakers which go up high either in the ceiling or at the very top of a vertical wall. Ideally you want four height speakers, and two extra surround (‘side’) speakers to complete what would be a 7.1.4 system. The ‘4’ being the four height speakers and the 7 being the upgrade from 5 because you have the extra surround speakers.

  15. What a coup, Paul! I don’t have a 5.1, or Atmos setup, but I couldn’t resist this one or Lexicon Of Love. Definitely a sound bar for our next television. Thanks for the great work!

  16. Instant order as usual. I predict the SDE surround sound series is going to be one of the most expensive second-hand collectables for audiophiles over the next ten years – it’s really top tier stuff. I really appreciate you keeping the prices reasonable too Paul – thank you so much for all the hard work you’ve put into these!

  17. Truly amazing what you are giving us Paul. This album WITH bonus tracks and instrumentals all in Atmos. Sick! I just read somewhere that the Trevor Horn Blu-ray is now coming with instrumentals as well! Adding instrumentals to the surround sound series is incredible. You also added the instrumentals to Lexicon Of Love. Absolutely stellar. I couldn’t be happier. Always loved instrumentals and this Soft Cell album is a classic if I have ever seen one. Brilliant!

  18. Thanks Paul, great stuff as usual. Also great to see that the Trevor Horn release will get gene more content with the instrumental 5.1 mix.

  19. This one looks like good value for the money. ‘Non-Stop…’ was interesting enough at the time of it’s release, and its stature and importance have only increased over time.

  20. A cracking release and if I had an Atmos setup I’d be straight on it. As always thanks to Paul for keeping physical media well and truly alive. Unlike the just announced utterly pathetic DM white label and digital campaign. Yes the white labels are vinyl but merely overpriced cobblers/cash grabs. And unlike Soft Cell and OMD DM have clearly given up on CD singles.

    1. I don’t have an ATMOS set-up ( just a good blu-ray player) but I’ve bought this for the instrumental version/ to save me digging out my vinyl! Same with the ABC, the instrumental versions are excellent

  21. Shame no 12” versions …. So what’s the best quality remaster/remix version of Tainted Love/Where did our Love go? on CD or Blu-ray?
    Any suggestions, anybody? Please!

  22. Fab release! When I checked out the site (as I do daily) I saw this and ordered immediately.

I have a Atmos setup / 4 in Ceiling speakers so this will be an exciting release.

I know others have mentioned higher resolution audio such as 192, I wonder if it would be possible?

Would be nice to have some of the 12” mixes but I understand. I still have my Keychains & Snowstorms CD Box set but I missed out on their DVD disc replacement back then, and my DVD barely plays anything from that disc. Sadly doesn’t look like their upcoming CD set will feature a BLU or DVD of live performances or the Non Stop Exotic Video Show will be part of the set.

Also can anyone recommend a UK shop to Import the upcoming CD Box Set from? I noticed Rough Trade are taking pre-orders but do they ship well protected … or should I order it direct from Soft Cells site? (Which looks to be Universal Music but makes me wonder how well they protect their shipments.)

    1. I would sadly not recommend the Soft Cell site, I placed an order with them in September, they left out a CD and have been giving me the run around ever since, packaging was not special either. Definitely not shipped by universal , has a more DIY vibe like it was shipped from someone’s flat.

      1. Ah man…sorry to hear that.

I’ve had no problems with ordering from the Soft Cell store. And one order included a signed Dave Ball item as a surprise.

    2. I’ve ordered things from both Rough Trade and the Soft Cell store and they both package items very well. Might be that if you order it directly from the Soft Cell store that the band get more of the money so if I had the choice I’d go for that.

  23. Will be interesting to see what chart position the sales of this SDE exclusive achieve for the album after the success of Tubular Bells and Time Out Of Mind. I suspect Soft Cell will have a wider fan base than Mike & Bob.

    1. Can’t say i’m looking forward to that. Their poorest album by a long way and i can’t understand why their other albums are being ignored apart from Kick.

  24. Am I missing something, but where is ‘Where Did Our Love Go’? I can no more hear Tainted Love without that then I can hear We Will Rock You without We Are The Champions. It was the B-Side, right? Why was that not put on this?

      1. Silly Soft Cell. I get that it was a 12″ but it always felt more like a double sided single to me and an essential song in their canon. “Where Did Our Love Go” in Atmos could have been amazing. ah well, milk spilled crying over….This is still so chocked full of aural anticipation. December can not get here fast enough. (is there some way i can pay some outrageous fee to get mine TODAY???? come on, Paul, think like the bean counters in the industry! hahaha) Thank you again for all of these amazing releases.

  25. Pleased to see this. Mentioned it seems by no one else but one I think absolutely would suit the Atmos/Surround treatment is The Buggles’ Age Of Plastic. Love that album…….

  26. On eBay already for £58 seller based in Belfast. Not even waiting until it’s sold out on here. I know you say it doesn’t bother you Paul but it’s a bit cheeky!

    1. The gentle art of buying something and then selling it for a little bit more is called Retail Trade and pre-dates eBay by thousands of years. While l condemn profiteering, l also both somewhat admire the enterprise of these eBay bandits and definitely envy them their chutzpah. Mr.Paul’s sanguine acceptance of this vexing practice seems perhaps, most wise. We all need to put tofu on the table.

      1. Paul, actually the [news] post does NOT make this clear. You have to click over to the sdeshop. THAT description of the product does state “region-free” about 2/3 down the product description (not counting the song listing).

Really great catch getting this in your series, by the way!

  27. Congratulations, Paul! “Iconic” is thrown around cheaply these days but in this instance, its an understatement. However, it’s odd and disappointing to see that producer extraordinaire (and personal friend), Mike Thorne‘s (Wire, Bronski Beat, Blur, The The, Nina Hagen, etc.) name has been completely omitted from any mention on both the announcement of this blu-ray and the assorted variations of Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret on Soft Cell’s site. So please allow me to correct the record and for those unaware, Mike Thorne produced Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret (1981) and so much more: https://stereosociety.com/softcell/

    1. Yes, twelve inch mixes would have been the cherry on the cake (Torch and Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go for me). But, we do get instrumentals in Dolby Atmos, including Say Hello, Wave Goodbye so this makes up for this is a big way.

  28. Ordered, of course. Another great score for Paul and SDE. Congrats, Paul, and thank you for making this possible! With the recent sad news of another major retailer(Best Buy) here in North America soon(2024) bowing out of the physical media market – this very impressive parade of new and classic 80s/90s/00s albums being re-issued in multi-channel/immersive format is surely a balm for the collective soul of a modern audiophile. Thank you, Paul, and keep them coming!

  29. Obvious question from a stereo audiophile; the stereo mix (24/48) is the original stereo mix but it states it’s been remastered. Any information on the remastering and to what extent it has been compressed or limited?

As many here will have seen I’m a strong advocate for flat transfers of the original stereo mixes in addition to any new remaster.

I hope the remaster only uses sympathetic limiting…….

    1. I’m guessing it’s the same stereo remaster that will be used for the new box set release. This has been mentioned on other threads. If it is, it’s been done by Barry Grint. Or is this one part of the by-product of creating the surround mix? I know this has type of thing has been mentioned before on previous SDE releases. Would be good to know for sure.

      1. You can fold down surround to stereo and this often creates a more dynamic stereo mix but how faithful this folded down stereo mix is to the original mix will depend on how the surrounded mixer encoded it to be folded down to stereo.

When the surround mix and the original stereo mix are mixed in the digital domain, the instructions to fold down to stereo are there (TFF The Tipping Point). Where the original stereo mix was analogue the only way the folded down stereo mix can be faithful to the original stereo mix is if the surround mixer can recreate the original stereo mix in the digital domain before doing the surround mix (TFF The Hurting & SFTBC). The new stereo digital mix then provides the fold down instructions. Of course the question is then how faithful is the new digital stereo mix to the analogue original.

I understand Steve Wilson recreates the original stereo mix first in the digital domain before doing the surround mix if he doesn’t have the original stereo mix in the digital domain.

  30. Excellent but the shipping to New Zealand has now double in price making it the same price as the product. Ouch

There’s no way we can do combined orders to bring the price down?

    1. Brianz,

The prices on theSDEShop website are now converted to NZ$ if you live in NZ (like you and I do), so what used to cost £10 for shipping to NZ now costs NZ$22. The current poor exchange rate doesn’t help – I used to be able to get these for under NZ$60 including shipping, but now it’s over NZ$70. Also, I notice that the shopping cart incorrectly estimates shipping as NZ$10, but it changes to NZ$22 when you choose to checkout.

      1. Yep – same here to Australia, and ditto on the exchange rate. It is why I have had to be super-picky on which SDEs I pick up… but Paul is definitely managing to keep releasing spectacular editions that are hitting my 80s sweet spot – so impressed!

  31. No brainer order to compliment the box set, whenever that is released.
Agree with others that Gary Numan, Japan and Kate Bush would be amazing releases and I’ll throw in Frankie’s Pleasuredome aswell.
Can’t see Kate letting it happen though.
Thanks Paul for another great release and glad to see extra tracks and videos being added to complete the package.
Also ordered Peter Gabriel from the store so two great releases to look forward to.

    1. I think I had a small aneurysm at the thought of Atmos mixes of Kate, early Gary Numan or Japan (or heaven forfend, the first 4 Sylvian solos!!!!). Add my vote to *any* of these!

  32. No idea what equipment I need to get the benefit of these mixes beyond a blu-ray player but couldn’t let this opportunity pass me by so, ordered! Yay. I’ll figure it out when it arrives.

    1. I’m trying to work out whether I need a blu ray player that is Dolby Atmos compliant. I’m only interested in playing the discs in 5.1 as I’ve got a 5.1 receiver that isn’t set up yet. If I get a player that isn’t Atmos compliant will it just read the disc as 5.1?

  33. Delighted with this beyond belief. Already ordered. So happy you were able to include “What?” and “Memorabilia” from “Non Stop Ecstatic Dancing.” Any chance we’d see the rest of those tracks and of course that “Tainted Love-Where Did Our Love Go” 12 inch single sometime/somewhere? (not complaining, just curious)

    1. I hope it is the Memorabilia from Non Stop Ecstatic Dancing (the one with Cindy Ecstasy), but I doubt it will be. The description Paul wrote says singles, which implies it will be the original Memorabilia that was released.

Maybe Non Stop Ecstatic Dancing could be a later release in the series. Could add all the mixes to that one to beef it up (Such as the 12″ single Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go and Tainted Dub.

  34. Fantastic, ordered! I just wish the instrumental version of the album was on here too but I guess they want that exclusive to the other boxset that is out soon. Hopefully The Art Of Falling Apart will join this series too at some point too. If the door to 80s synth/alternative artists is now open, that could lead to similar offerings from Human League (Dare), League Unlimited Orchestra, Duran Duran’s 1st album, Telex – Birds And Bees/Sex (they’ve just remastered and re-tweaked their back catalogue), Spandau Ballet’s 1st album desperately needs a decent remastering and treatment, John Foxx’s Metamatic, Gary Numan’s Replicas, The Pleasure Principle and Telekon, or the more recent Savage, Japan’s Tin Drum, Gentlemen Take Polaroids. Or very suiting to this format, the early Jean-Michel Jarre albums.

  35. Ordered it, I can’t wait to hear tainted love and Torch all around me. It would have been superbe if the 12″ were included in the Dolby Atmos too

      1. Since I will only be listening to the stereo version that is quite disappointing. Hope they change their minds and put a 96/24 stereo mix on it, as well as a stereo instrumental mix.

      2. Oh what a pity. I’m a big advocate of hi-res and would have preferred it as 24/96 but hey ho, beggars can’t be choosers. I still ordered though because the promos will be upgraded to HD as well as the Atmos mixes!

      3. Perfect. I have to wonder what all the “too bad it’s not 96/24” folks think was captured on these master tapes between 24kHz and 48kHz that they think they’re missing.

        1. Nail, head, Adam. These people must think they have the hearing of a cat. Double blind testing has proved that mere humans can’t even tell the difference between a CD and decent MP3, let alone this hi res nonsense designed to make gullible fans buy stuff they already have over and over again.

  36. Absolutely ordered. Thanks Paul, love your work. And I echo another commenters words… Hounds of Love would be amazing!!
Also Pet Shop Boys’ Actually too.

  37. Proving there’s a John Shuttleworth quote for every occasion: “Oof!”

What good news. The series goes from strength to strength, Paul.

  38. Fantastic news and completely makes up for the incredibly late notification of the boxset delivery date from Soft Cell HQ. As others have said, couldn’t order this one quickly enough. Many thanks indeed for your work in making this happen, Paul.

  39. Paul I feel that between you, Steven Wilson, Indie shops and a handful of artists you are saving the retail music industry from itself. This release is bloody wonderful – adore Soft Cell buy everything they release. This is mega and looking forward to future releases. Atmos really seems to have ignited something …

  40. Absolutely fantastic news! Barring Hounds of Love, this is about the best album I could have hoped for! Also, there seems to be a listing for a Moondance blu ray above – have I missed something? When was this announced?

  41. Yep SC HQ were plastering teasers all over their social media accounts yesterday saying a new format would be available but only from a certain retailer so it was pretty much guaranteed that it’d be this, was all over it like a badly fitting suit :)

  42. Excellent news. The content of these keep getting better and better. Nice work, Paul. Ordered! Well, not yet, but I will when I finish work :)
