Steve Hillage 22CD megabox available with exclusive SDE signed print

Steve Hillage has signed 100 photographs to be given away exclusively with his impressive box set Searching For The Spark.

The English musician is associated with the Canterbury scene of the late ’60s / early ’70s and formed short-lived outfit Khan; worked with Kevin Ayers for a while; was a member of Gong and then went on to release a series of solo albums in the late 1970s, including Fish Rising, L, Motivation Radio and Green.

The 22CD box set (it contains no vinyl) is enormous, weighing in at nearly five kilograms, thanks, in part, to the inclusion of a hefty 188-page hardcover book, written and assembled by Steve Hillage and Gong family expert Jonny Greene, the book contains hundreds of rare and previously unseen photographs and cuttings. It’s limited to 2500 copies worldwide and was first released in late 2016.

The SDE-exclusive signed photo comes with every box set ordered via the SDE shop and also features the autograph of Steve’s creative partner Miquette Giraudy. You can place an SDE shop order via this link, or use the button below. These are in stock and ready to ship.

  1. Just filled a blank spot in my collection with the purchase of this box. What an impressive set this is! The additional signed photo is nice, but it would have been even better to have a photo of Steve and Miquette together (since they both signed), especially given the fact that her synth work and input become more and more impressive over the years. Now what about that System 7 box?
    Thanks Paul.

  2. Hi got my copy a while back. Got into Steve via Mike Oldfield and my cousin who had Green, Open and L plus live double album as well as Kevin Ayers etc stuff. Moreover, there is the fact that he produced my fave Simple Minds album Sons and Fascination Sister Feelings Call. As to the box together with Ian Hunter’s massive 30 CD box the best there is. Not cheap but worth every penny.

  3. When we were in a teenage punk/new wave band 40 odd years ago,
    we still remained friends with old hippies;
and spent a lot of time hanging out in their squats.
Chilled out afternoons enjoying hot cakes freshly baked to the hippies own special recipe.
Hillage and Gong, and Dub Reggae, were a unifying force of music between us all back then.
So much, our band even got a synth and early analog delay box.
Hillage LPs were also the ideal mood music for long leisurely intimate ‘cuddling’ sessions
    with my then girlfriend …
I was 19 she was 18, that was quite some intense cuddling.
But 200 quid for this box: as much as I’d want it, I’ve got no choice but to just stick with my pleasingly nostalgic memories…
Besides that amount of cuddling now might kill me at my age…

  4. Hi. Can anyone comment mastering of Arzachel? Is It a new one? I have a Piper Records (2008) version of it. I’m not sure how legit it is.

    1. I don’t think anything was remastered for this box. I think the version of Arzachel is the same as the 1994 edition on Drop Out. It certainly sounds the same to me.

  5. Are you sure this is a SDE exclusive? Amazon review (below) from March this year details the same signed content. So not REALLY an SDE exclusive…

“Searching for the Spark” is without doubt the very best box set collection I have Format: Audio CD
    Verified Purchase

This is a review for the physical box set rather than informed detail on musical content.

I am a keen collector of CD box sets. “Searching for the Spark” is…lovingly put together with a superb quality hardcover book/posters/scrapbook and the 22 x CD’s themselves all in gatefold “Japanese style” sleeve reproductions.

Also included is a carefully signed certificate by Steve Hillage and Miquette Giraudy, an enamel badge and guitar plectrum which is useful for removing the CD’s from the box.

          1. I should maybe add – get well soon Bill, loving you still on Classic FM.

  6. Great deal ! It’s a pity I’ve already got a copy !
It’s one of the most thorough and well put together boxsets ever !! I can’t wait to see him on tour later this year !! Prog on !

  7. Just to put things in some perspective, the cost of this set represents a month’s rent for me. (OK, so I share a house with two other blokes, but still…) Nonetheless, I just bought the Tangerine Dream box set and am loving it.

  8. This looks like a hell of a deal if you love Hillage. I had Rainbow Dome Musick playing during my wedding so it will always hold a special place in my heart.

  9. This is an immense box, I have barely scratched the surface. My limited understanding of Hillage only comes through my Oldfield obsession and it was a toss up between this or the Tangerine Dream box, I am so glad I plumped for “Spark”. Beautifully wrapped as ever Paul, Thank you.

  10. I’m not sure if you’re aware, but for a couple of weeks now your site has not been loading properly on either my Android phone or tablet. The cache on both devices has been cleared a number of times during that time span but the problem persists. Two images of how it looks on phone and tablet respectively:
