Tears For Fears / The Hurting on SDE-exclusive Blu-ray Audio

Plus half-speed mastered vinyl for the 40th anniversary

40th anniversary blu-ray audio • Quick pre-order link

Tears For Fears 1983 debut album The Hurting turns 40 today! Now where did that time go? To celebrate, and in collaboration with Virgin/UMR and the band, the album will be reissued on the Blu-ray Audio format in May and will be available exclusively from SDE, via theSDEshop.com.

The album features the hit singles ‘Mad World’, ‘Change’ and ‘Pale Shelter’, all of which reached the top five of the UK charts in 1982-3. The Hurting is the only Tears For Fears album written solely by Roland Orzabal and is a loose concept album focusing on themes of childhood psychological trauma and Arthur Janov’s Primal Scream therapy, the theories behind which gave the band their name. Despite its dark subject matter, the album was a huge commercial success [topping the UK charts] and continues to resonate with younger audiences to this day.

‘Mad World’ was the first hit single for Tears For Fears from ‘The Hurting’ in late 1982.

The SDE-exclusive Blu-ray Audio sees The Hurting remixed for spatial audio for the very first time. The renowned musician, songwriter and producer Steven Wilson has created a Dolby Atmos Mix and a dedicated 5.1 mix which have been approved by the band. Steven was previously responsible for the spatial audio mixes of the Tears For Fears albums Songs From The Big Chair (1985), The Seeds of Love (1989) and The Tipping Point (2022).

Additionally, this new Hurting blu-ray audio will feature a previously unreleased instrumental mix of The Hurting and two previously unreleased bonus tracks.

I think it was important for us that our first album had substance and was not just a commercial work. So in that sense it was the album we had to make. We felt the need to get it out of our systems and share

Curt Smith (talking to Paul Sinclair in 2013)

The story behind these bonus tracks is rather interesting. When Steven Wilson was supplied with the multi-track tapes for remixing, he came across two unreleased versions of songs from the album. These were ‘Mad World’ and ‘Watch Me Bleed’, as produced by Mike Howlett, the man responsible for the first single version of ‘Pale Shelter’. Howlett might have ended up producing the album, but his working relationship with Tears For Fears was destined to be short-lived, with Roland Orzabal explaining to this writer in 2013 [on the 30th anniversary] that “he was trying to use the LinnDrum [machine] on everything and we were not very happy”. Curt also thought that “Mike was far too commercial for us” and thus Howlett ultimately made way for Chris Hughes and Ross Cullum to produce The Hurting.

Apart from the first single version of ‘Pale Shelter’, none of Mike Howlett’s work has ever been released and indeed Roland and Curt hadn’t heard these tracks themselves since they were first recorded! This is a historical find and these rarities have sat, undiscovered, in the vaults for 40 years (probably because they were never mixed to stereo). Both songs have now been newly mixed by Steven Wilson and are included on the Blu-ray as special bonus audio.

Audio streams available on the SDE-exclusive The Hurting Blu-ray Audio:

  • The Hurting – Steven Wilson 2023 Dolby Atmos mix
  • The Hurting – Steven Wilson 2023 DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 mix (96/24)
  • The Hurting – Original Mix in hi-res stereo (96/24)
  • The Hurting – Steven Wilson 2023 Instrumental mix in hi-res stereo (96/24)

And the two bonus tracks, both mixed to hi-res stereo (96/24) by Steven Wilson, are:

  • ‘Mad World’ (Mike Howlett Version)
  • ‘Watch Me Bleed’ (Mike Howlett Version)

This Tears For Fears Blu-ray Audio is #9 in the ongoing SDE Surround Series and will be packaged similarly to previous editions and ships with a free, collectible SDE Surround Series slipcase.

Here’s the now traditional reminder as to why this product is highly recommended:

  • It’s the only way to enjoy the Dolby Atmos mix of the album via a physical product
  • You don’t need to sign-up to a streaming service such as Tidal or Apple Music to hear the spatial audio mix
  • The Atmos Mix on the Blu-ray is not compressed due to streaming bandwidth restrictions
  • You own the product, you are not renting it from a digital service provider
  • The Blu-ray audio is an excellent format for music and you don’t want to see it die off
  • It’s the only way to hear the previously unreleased bonus tracks (and the instrumental version of The Hurting)
  • Supporting SDE with these initiatives leads to similar collaborations with labels/artists and we are keen to bring your more in the near future!
The Hurting half-speed mastered vinyl LP
Half-speed mastered vinyl

There another physical format for this 40th anniversary. Miles Showell has remastered The Hurting and cut to half-speed from the original half-inch master tapes for a new vinyl edition which will be released alongside the Blu-ray. Vinyl and Blu-ray Audio are the only two physical formats for this 40th anniversary celebration.

The SDE-exclusive Blu-ray Audio of The Hurting is a limited edition item. It will be pressed based on demand and due to the short lead time to manufacture, it will be available to pre-order for 10 days only. Availability after that cannot be guaranteed, so secure your copy today by pre-ordering at the SDE shop, either directly via this link or using the special SDE shop buy button (‘add to cart’) below. We ship worldwide (the tracked service to USA for blu-ray is £8, for example) and a specially-priced Blu-ray+Vinyl LP bundle is also available.

The Hurting 40th anniversary Blu-ray Audio and the half-speed mastered vinyl LP will be released on 9 June 2023 (was 12 May), via Virgin/UMR.

TECHNICAL NOTES: This blu-ray audio requires a blu-ray player. Decoding the Dolby Atmos mix requires a Dolby Atmos-certified soundbar or a Dolby Atmos-compatible AV Receiver/Amp. The Dolby Atmos mix will ‘fold down’ to 5.1 or stereo if a Dolby Atmos decoder is not detected.
EU SHIPPING NOTES: If you are ordering from the EU please be aware that that goods may be subject to import VAT when they arrive from the UK. The prices the SDE shop charge you do not include VAT

  1. Got mine a few weeks ago but only just listened to it and was blown away. Added real depth to a classic 80s album and definitely exceeded my expectations. Mike Howlett bonus mixes are a real extra and so different to the album versions.
Was so impressed with this blu-ray that I immediately ordered ABC Lexicon of Love blu-ray. That should sound epic.

  2. Was a little worried when this was arriving but not quite at mine.
Whew thank goodness, I arrived home tonite & there it was waiting to be opened.
Thanks so much for this & for getting it to me here …. in New Zealand.

    1. Dean, my copy of The Hurting blu-ray took almost a month from shipping date to delivery in NZ. A totally different experience to when The Tipping Point blu-ray arrived on my doorstep in Matata on release day!

  3. Has anyone noticed on the Atmos mix of Mad World where the standout moment of the descending horn section in the second verse “Happy Birthday…” etc has almost disappeared? It’s there on the stereo mix but on the Atmos mix it is very faint in the front right corner. I don’t have a full Atmos system only a LG SQ95QR Soundbar. I may not have it calibrated correctly and just wondered if anyone else had picked this up or is it just me.

  4. My copy arrived on Wednesday – finally got a chance to listen to it, and I’m over the moon. Sampled tracks from the different mixes, and it all sounds superb! Thank you for making this available.

  5. Paul,
I listened to the 5.1 mix of ‘The Hurting’ earlier today and it sounds great. I love this series and I can’t wait to see (and hear) what other surprises are in store. Thanks again for all your efforts to make this sort of thing happen. Cheers…

    1. It was always going to happen. You’d think they’d struggle to sell them since SDE readers had enough time to place their orders.
Everyone who managed to place their order isn’t going to worry about copies on e-bay, I’ve got mine so I don’t care about e-bay.

  6. So pleased to receive this a day earlier than expected and I have to say it doesn’t disappoint! That’s an understatement tbh. Just listened to the atmos mix and it’s elevated my love of this album even more. How does Steven Wilson create such brilliant mixes that are true to the originals and yet make our most beloved albums sound so new and fresh. The man is a remix genius. Many atmos mixes just emphasise a sense of ‘ambience’ without real thought given to the clarity and instrument/voice placement in the mix. Not with SW. Long may he keep remixing. I can’t wait to listen to the other mixes on this disc! Praised be to SDE.

  7. Thank you so much for this and also for getting it to (some of us) on the day before release date. I’m usually waiting days after release for items to show up !!

  8. Those with a preference for two channel listening have certainly benefited from the slight delay. The 2023 Steven Wilson stereo mix will probably become my go to version of this album. Very much enjoying the instrumental take as well. Everyone has been very well served be it Multi channel or stereo, two album mixes each with the addition of the instrumental mix and bonus 7″ material. As with the Tubular Bells a couple of weeks ago this is excellent value.

  9. Thanks Paul & team, received my blu-ray today and it isn’t a disappointment, it sounds great. I’m glad the band and label decided to change their minds and create a surround version of The Hurting.
Hearing many Dolby Atmos mixes on Tidal that don’t make use of the centre speaker, I’m very glad that Steven Wilson’s approach is to use the centre speaker for the main vocals and have the backing vocals come around you on the other speakers.
One of the reasons I enjoy listening to surround music is that you can hear instruments that sometimes get buried in a stereo mix.

  10. Paul, you should be running Universal or Sony. You know what music lovers want, because you truly love music! I look forward to what you have planned next.

  11. Paul, thank you for such interesting products. I am from Russia, I do not have the opportunity to place an order and pay for it with MC and VISA cards, PayPal is also not available. Request from fans from Russia: please make payment using Union Pay cards. Thank you in advance! Best regards, Ilya.

  12. Loving the teaser with the slip cover that features both the original UK art and the international cover as well! My sister bought the cassette here in the US so I knew the photo of them by the pond as the cover for years before seeing the original! USA could be so strange about altering artwork and track listings back then!

  13. I already have three of these wonderful SDE Blu-ray editions, and it is fantastic to see this, my favorite album by TFF (I still have my 7″ of Pale Shelter, Howlett version, bought at the time of release at Recycled Records on Grant Street), get its own edition. I am now off the fence about this one – I will, of course, be ordering a copy – but I too am interested in hi-res audio only for stereo mixes, and I am sad that we cannot have the SW 2023 mix in stereo. He has embargoed these in the past, and, although I understand his reasoning, I expect many who buy this edition are fans of both SW and TFF, and I doubt any of us would not want to hear his new stereo mix (just as I doubt a single buyer of the recent boxes for Roxy Music’s first or Marillion’s third would not have wanted to hear his stereo mixes for those). His stereo mixes always have something to add, and even when they might not replace the original mixes, they often seem like master classes in how records were made, causing me to notice little things that had been buried in the mix and to hear the album differently – more deeply – as a result. As a fan of SW’s remixes since the first one he did of King Crimson and of his own music since the early days of PT and No-Man (not to mention IEM and Bass Communion), I hope he will reconsider and let his fans hear his 2023 stereo mix in lovely 96/24 on on a physical medium. Nevertheless, with or without that mix, The Hurting on SDE Blu-ray will be a treat, and I look forward to spending time with it. I can’t wait to hear about the next one!

  14. Instant buy, this is great news. This will make 4 that I’m still waiting on, but so worth it! I really enjoy the Eno & the other TfF release, The Tipping Point. Appreciate you carrying the torch for single edition surround blu-ray releases Paul!

  15. I’ve ordered the blu-ray. Thank you very much for another Tears For Fears blu-ray audio Paul!
Looking forward to some more listening excellence in May.

  16. Ordered the blu-ray; looks great! Should’ve bought the BR / Vinyl combo right away but haven’t had great luck with vinyl shipments from Europe to the states lately. BR should hold up much better.

  17. Next stupid question. Will the cover look exactly like the stereo-only BD-A from 2014? I know the slipcase and the backside will make it easy to differentiate the two, but for anybody later trying to sell one or pick one up, I could imagine that being confusing. A small “40th Anniversary” or “Steven Wilson Remixes” might help there.

    1. No idea, at this point. Probably. I hate it when album covers are spoiled by text like ’40th anniversary’ so that won’t be going on there.

        1. I’m ahead of you there. This blu-ray will have a reversible insert with the white UK cover on one side and the international cover (specifically, Canadian) on the other! So you can choose. The slipcase also has both covers…

      1. Paul, you don’t like the cover spoiled by additional text. So do I. But I really wonder why you’ve put on the bottom of the slipcase all these additional info? On the top, okay, but on the bottom…it really ruins the artwork IMHO.

  18. Excellent. Especially the surround BR. Universal should have reissued the 3 CD+ DVD box set with the half speed double LP. I already own the box set but lots of fans missed on that box set. I know a few friends who are waiting for a reissue to buy it (prices are insane for this box set on Discogs, Ebay, etc,).

As it’s probably too late for a reissue for the Hurting box set, why not an 80s box set with the content of all 3 box sets : Hurting, Songs from the Big Chair and the Seeds of Love next year ? Or simply a bundle of all 3 box sets ? And maybe an empty box sold separately for those who already own them.

    1. Great idea to reissue the boxes. I only have the Seeds of Love box, which is great. Would love an opportunity to get the others.

  19. Anybody got any clue whether the Howlett version of Mad World is much different to the ordinary single/ lp version?I am assuming it is very similar/not much changed to the version we all know? Not likely to be drastically different I assume?

    1. As one of only a handful of people who have heard it, I can tell you that it is VERY different. It’s a completely different recording, different vocal, different everything. Obviously it’s still the same song, same structure and plenty arrangement ideas remained – or were developed – but this isn’t one of those ‘sounds almost identical’ outtakes. ‘Watch Me Bleed’ is even better in this respect. I know I would say this… but these are ‘must haves’ if you’re a TFF fan.

      1. So it IS the version with the Casio VL-1 demo song on the intro, and the very straight Curt chorus vocal timing yes? Just so I know what’s what.

(otherwise what the hell have I got ? Etc)

        1. @simonthornton Simon – anything else of interest (unreleased etc.) in that archive dump that you referred to in an earlier response? If there is, would be good to ‘remind’ Universal via Paul/SDE/this web page so that un-released material can potentially see the light of day….

  20. Just an idea here, when you announce the 10th SDE exclusive you should also sell empty box shells so people who bought all 10 will have a nice box to put them in. It is also an incentive for SDE buyers to buy all your exclusive releases because you will then also offer a box shell for the next 10 (number 11 to 20). More sales = more future SDE exclusives. Win/win.

    1. Nice idea Kauwgompie – and I’m a sucker for such things – however shipping an empty box would be perilous, and hopefully the slipcases achieve something similar :)

      1. Yes shipping wouldn’t be easy. Bowie Live Adventures did it, right? They were very sturdy boxes with a piece of foam inside to protect the shape if I remember correctly. Yes, the slipcases do achieve the idea that you want them all because they are numbered. Very good thinking those slip cases, and pretty too!

    2. This is exactly what Blank & Jones did for the first ten numbers of their So80s series. I‘m still hoping that one day I need to get another empty box ;-)

      1. I bought two at the time and have filled the second box with so80’s Vol. 11-13, the so far only release of so90s and the special artist releases of the series plus the ZTT and Formel 1-editions.

The empty boxes are currently unavailable from the Blank & Jones-shop, so if they start issuing more related releases they’d have to print another run of boxes…

  21. Here’s hoping that the stereo mix (the one I can currently play), will be 24/96 and hopefully Mr Wilson will have something to do with that. Pre ordered anyways as my favourite band.

  22. Hi Paul, I truly appreciate what you are doing here but as a 2 channel audiophile I am not interested in the surround sound mixes. People like me are interested in Hi Res (24/96) well mastered stereo mixes be it the original master, remaster or remix.

For this to be of interest to me I would be looking for a 24/96 flat (dynamic) transfer of the original master. Appreciate the details of the original stereo remaster are TBC but I would suggest these releases need an audiophile 2 ch Hi Res offering. The Tipping Point Blu Ray did not have a stereo Hi Res at all.

Might be worth collaborating with Rubellan and getting Rubellan to produce a 24/96 stereo remaster ad as well as flat transfer of the original master if there is no remix.

Ideally in terms of 2 ch Hi Res I would look for either remix and original flat or dynamic remaster and original master.

For me the balance being struck for the Ultravox Hi Res is spot on, although would be better for surround fans if the DVD was DVD-A or Blu Ray to enable Hi Res surround.

      1. I love 3″ CD singles, they’re so cute. ::) A regular sized CD single with two songs on it just looks like a waste of plastic to me.

        1. An easy solution, if you have one, is to use a cd paper wallet, from an older LP, where the cd used to be put in for free? Or keep it it in the plastic box with the nice SDE sleeve!

    1. I pulled out my box set the other day, and was surprised to see that there’s actually just enough empty space in the box to add a standard blu-ray case in it. Might be a bit tight with the slipcase, though.

  23. The Hurting was a magnificent album , still is a magnificent album ……and I can’t wait to hear this version on my first ever blu ray. Well done on this Paul.

    1. Which player are you gonna buy to play it on? Need to keep an eye on specs if you also need it to play DVD-A or SACD. Sony may be the best bet…

  24. Well this is really an interesting #9, so far 2 releases from Tears and hopefully we’ll get the “Song’s from the Big Chair” in an Atmos mix Blu-Ray because as you all know the previous Blu-Ray edition of Songs has been Out of Stock literally since it was released from the Pure Audio Universal camp.
What’s great about this release of “The Hurting” is the Multichannel mixes (and bonus tracks) not on the original Blu-Ray which was Stereo only.
The 2.0 is going for about a Benjamin mint/Sealed Condition nowadays and I didn’t purchase it mainly because it wasn’t Multichannel.
I would definitely want a chance to get a Blu-Ray audio Atmos mix of SFTBC, only have the box set which has more options but Atmos wasn’t on the table at the time of the 2014 releases.

  25. Thanks, Paul, for ensuring that a unique, “lossless” 24/96, 5.1-mix was included, as part of this EXCLUSIVE-SDE, “spatial audio” offering.

    Cheers!

  26. Paul, thanks so much for being the internet’s number one Tears For Fears torchbearer. My shelf is eagerly awaiting this final addition to my “classic era” TFF collection. Keep ’em coming!

  27. Ordered! My fourth one in this series. I had to skip a few, because, unfortunately, I can’t buy ’em all! But this one is a must. I still hope that Simple Minds will discover Atmos for themselves. For all their albums but the later ones in particular. Black And White or Big Music and their latest offer! But there are many other artists that might tempt me. Too many to mention. Thanks, Paul, for making this possible!

  28. ordered. another fantastic release. thanks for all of these Paul. just got Orbital the other day. keep ’em coming. don’t stop it now, don’t stop it no.

  29. Just bought!
Hey Paul, have you had a little thought about releasing in Atmos the Bacharach/Costello collaboration Painted from Memory?

    1. Oh yes you’re absolutely right, they are all on Amazon Uk available to pre order now. I thought this was coming out later in the year like the others did. Nice one mate.

    2. That has been denied by one of the producers of the box on the Ultravox FB group who I trust more than Amazon listing a product. That happened for Rage in Eden and it was at least 6 months longer for the set to be released.

    3. I had a look at the Amazon listing and it says it’s issued from the Czech Republic. Think I’ll wait until it’s up on the official web site.

  30. So happy about this – I have always been disappointed that the deluxe reissue of this didn’t have the surround mix in it. Thank you so much for sorting this out. There have been some wonderful releases in this series, and this is no exception.

  31. Hi Paul – fantastic coup. Many congratulations. With such great success, I just hope the record companies don’t decide that they should be doing this themselves and cut you out. You have single handedly brought this format back to life and deserve to prosper from it. Look forward to the next release in the series.

    1. With all due respect: If I – as a customer – had a choice between paying around €20 (which is what Marillion’s An Hour Before It’s Dark costs on Blu-ray) and €45 (which this will end up costing me due to shipping, taxes and handling fees), I know what I would prefer.

If I lived in the UK, this wouldn’t be an issue. But I don’t and so it is. Especially since SDE to my knowledge still doesn’t participate in the IOSS system.

      1. I can understand both points of view.

Like Jules i don’t live in the UK and so i have to pay VAT twice (UK and Germany) plus the dreaded ‘handling fee’ to the courier and shipping which has also risen substantially probably because of a combination of Covid and Brexit.

So it was clear to me from day one of the endeavour that i wouldn’t buy all of the releases in this series though i of course hate it when i look at the shelf and there are numbers missing on the spines.

So far i had to let three br-a’s pass because i couldn’t justify paying 45 to 50€ for them:

Gilbert O’Sullivan whom i know from the time i was in primary school and he was on the telly singing some nice song about getting down ;-) ,

Orbital, because i have not enough love for the music they’re creating

and Ten Years After, whom i discovered because SDE announced some years ago the release of a cute little clamshell box holding their first ten studio albums.

As this box was cheaper on pre-order than one br-a offering from the SDE surround series i thought i’d give it a try and quite liked what i was hearing.

Regarding the SDE surround offering of one of their albums i decided that the original stereo mix of that album as included in the 10-cd box would be enough for me.

The Shakespears’ Sister album i only ordered because it was still open to orders when Brian Eno was announced and so both of these became a little cheaper in comparison regarding shipping and handling fee.

On the other hand i try not to forget what substantial savings on physical music related products i had in the last decade because of the brilliant deal alerts on this site.

I also fully understand Paul not making the move to participate in IOSS because no matter how nice we all find the Surround Series it is and will possibly stay a side project for Paul and i guess that lots of paperwork would be needed when he would join IOSS.

That’s a thing for bigger players like Townsend, rarewaves or Burning Shed who sell records for a living and thus have the manpower to handle the needed paperwork.

Regarding ‘The Hurting’ i haven’t decided yet if i need the br-a in addition to the SDE and the 2-cd deluxe editions but hey, thanks to our host here i now have some time for that decision because it’s not as if i have to hurry because it is going to sell within a few hours. That was an amazing change of operations that led to me buying more titles in the series than i’d have done otherwise.

I have to respectfully disagree with Paul though as i don’t see that i have no choice about these releases. I can still choose between buying them or not…

        1. Hallo, Klaus.

The same with me, plus I often order another one for a friend, or in case of TFF for two others so we can at least save some money. The extras on this one were a no-brainer, so it’s ordered.
So far I bought exactly the same discs as you.

I guess it it too much work to handle all the EU-buyers at once with a release like this, if you do it all on your own, so I still understand but for myself have to choose, where to pay this 50% plus.

Paul, thanks for your work. This blu-ray is easily worth 35 Euro to me. Complared to Queen’s latest Super-Deluxe it’s still not much money for all the same again with some extras. But they hopefully don’t set a standard with substandard releases and highest prices.

      2. You do, however, have a choice of getting this at an inflated price tag from well known outlets that do participate in IOSS within a couple of days after the release date. The question remains who do you want to support eventually?

      3. Let’s remember Paul is a one man band, whose love of music and records made him start a website at a time when High St record shops were closing down. A lot of people could no longer browse the shelves of their local record shop and find out about the latest releases. I know I was one of them.

Like most people on here, by chance I found SDE browsing the internet. Wow, I thought at the time, finally a website that lets me know what reissues are being released. No longer will I miss out on The Who ‘Live at Leeds’ box set that passed me by.

SDE had gone from strength to strength and the limited edition CD’s or blu-rays is a testament of the dedication and work Paul has put in over the years that record companies are willing to work with him on these products.

Unfortunately, Paul isn’t Amazon and you can’t expect him to have delivery prices like they can. Saying that, considering the prices of some Analogue Production releases, I find a blu-ray with a Dolby Atmos mix with delivery reasonable. Residing in the UK, Brexit has certainly changed things for everyone and we’re suffering as much as everyone abroad when it comes to importing goods.

Who knows what the future will hold for SDE. If the operation expands, he may be able to bring delivery prices down, have a partner in the US or combine orders. Who knows?

Thank you Paul for all your efforts in getting these releases made.

        1. Nice comment CDLP.

Life would have been a lot less interesting in the past decade without SDE’s contribution to the music industry – that’s priceless. All done with great effect from a music fan’s perspective.

          1. I agree, but i’d like to add that my life certainly went more interesting during this last decade too by reading and adding to the comments section on this site.

It’s really good to see that it is possible on the internet to discuss topics with people from all over the world and sometimes widely varied opinions in a mostly respectful, sometimes also relaxed and even friendly manner.

I just realised that for that alone i should become a lifelong subscriber to every item Paul will be selling on the SDE-shop as he’s the one providing us the safe space here to do so, sparing us most of the comments that are neither friendly, relaxed nor respectful (some of those might even have been posted by me).

My wallet disagrees though and softly whispers things like ‘Remember that Paul sometimes adds releases from acts like Ace of Base to his shop’ into my ear… :))

        2. I couldn’t agree more. SDE has literally enhanced my life. When record shopping came crashing down and we were left surfing the web for buying records, Paul came up with SDE. I check it 3 or 4x a day for updates and deals. I don’t think I could live without it anymore. It’s become part of my daily routine. I don’t care Paul’s shop is not in IOSS. I will always support him. He has single-handedly kept the physical format alive and now keeps surround sound and Atmos alive despite the record labels. Well done and THANK YOU.

      4. In terms of the shipping costs, I am in the US and have been buying and selling music online since the late 1990s. I even auctioned off a They Might Be Giants ‘Istanbul’ promo CD via email prior to Ebay launching. Shipping a CD to the UK used to cost about $6 and I used to sell a lot of CDs to the UK and Europe. Then in one go the USPS literally doubled the cost (forgot which year). It now costs over $15 to ship a CD to the UK (excluding packaging). Appreciate Paul offering reasonable shipping prices (less than $10 USD to ship to the US). In my experience this is below average for UK sellers shipping here. The item price itself is also very reasonable and as Paul mentioned somewhere here he could easily charge a bit more and sell just as many. Thank you Paul for your efforts and for providing us with this great community.

        1. You’re right that the shipping costs are reasonable. It just accumulates between those, the 19% VAT and that stupid handling fee that DHL just slaps on everything. (If all that money went to Paul instead, I’d complain less!) Plus not getting it delivered to my address but having to go to the post office to pick it up the next day possible is another annoyance.

I’m really annoyed at German customs: They had actually promised a new system where customers could “announce” a non-EU package to customs, so that DHL wouldn’t have to do that, and couldn’t charge those extra €6. This was supposed to be in place in early 2022 already, and it’s been postponed indefinitely without as much as a word. That kind of thing makes me think very carefully about any non-EU order.

  32. Great stuff Paul one the 80s finest albums, will be ordering shortly. Could I ask, is there a way of ordering the Tipping Point slipcase in with this order? Also I think it’s Mike Howlett’s version of The Prisoner that was on the B side of the original Pale Shelter single, or am I wrong?

  33. To be honest, this surprised me as it has already been released on blu ray audio. Even so, I will be buying this one for the instrumental versions and the other two bonus tracks. Will it be coming with a slip cover on release I wonder. Also, I thought I would let everyone know that the superb MUSIC FOR STOWAWAYS by the B. E. F is being released by Cold Spring in the UK on April 21st on black or yellow vinyl and CD. There are only 500 copies of the yellow vinyl edition available and can be pre ordered for just £20 from Cold Spring or Bandcamp. If you order from Bandcamp you also get a free CD quality download.

    1. …’and ships with a free, collectible SDE Surround Series slipcase’

Copied and pasted from the last paragraph of Paul’s article.

      You’re welcome.

    2. Music for Stowaways is one of my go to instrumental albums. I still have my original numbered cassette signed by all the band. Had to queue for ages at HMV Oxford St to get that (I think it was actually a signing session for Penthouse and Pavement).

  34. YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is what I’m talking about!!! TFF is exactly what I wanted for a Blu Ray Release! Thank you!!

  35. Paul, Another classic to join the growing SDE series and probably my favourite TFF album. Is there any chance of you using your industry influence to persuade Marillion/Racket Records to do another run of the box set of Misplaced Childhood? If not an SDE bluray would be a worthy substitute.

  36. Still no ‘We Are Broken’? ;-)

Even though I’ve been lightly critical of SW’s surround mixes in the past, I couldn’t pass this up and ordered as soon as I saw it.

  37. Ordered immediately, this will be my second blu ray audio disc from The Hurting.
Always looking forward to more releases in the SDE-series: I’m in for classic rock, 80s new wave, kate bush, electronic music and some ‘new’ interesting artists (fontaines dc, leah weller, first aid kit, fleet foxes, billie marten, lana del rey, laura marling, nilüfer yanya, pearl charles, faye webster, father john misty, maple glider,…).

  38. Paul, are you able to tell us how you were able to get permission to arrange this physical release of a Dolby atmos mix when Apple Music seems to have exclusive rights to them. Was this just on a whim or was there serious negotiations involved. Is there anything the SDE community can do to persuade the major labels to allow further releases?

    1. Apple don’t have exclusive rights. Recent streaming only Atmos releases – Revolver, Seal, etc. are available to stream in Atmos on Amazon Music HD.

  39. Ordered of course. Must say however, it took three attempts to get past the shipping info page. (A similar problem occurred with the Dylan disc last month.) Nevertheless, another great TFF release you have given us Pete. Perhaps “Big Chair” is next? Thanks!

  40. I wonder whether TFF will beat Dylan in popularity around here? :)
(it may come as no surprise that I too have ordered a copy …)

    1. ooh yes, a sales chart of the 5.1 series would be interesting, at least since you started taking pre-orders rather than pressing a set number

  41. Another no brainer from superdeluxeedition.com! So well done Paul! My Tears For Fears collection is now complete as the surround sound mix wasn’t included in the otherwise excellent original box set of this album.
I was listening to the Orbital blu ray yesterday, what a great spatial mix and what an excellent album. Being in the US (5 hours later than the UK), my first web visit of the day is always superdeluxeedition.com with my mouse ready to instantly order those SDE exclusives. Keep them coming please!!

  42. Oh @PaulS, you make it just too easy for us. Another no-brainer ordered. One of my favourite albums from that period which brings back many memories.

  43. Thank you Paul, TFF and SW for this awesome Bluray release! Immediately ordered :)

Besides the surround sound options, I am very happy with the extra tracks, and ever more with the instrumental version!

  44. Super exciting news! My favourite TFF album and one of my all-time favourite albums. Bundle ordered! Cannot wait to hear this.

  45. Ordered. One of my all time favourite albums. I can remember buying the LP very close to release date from Woolworths in Bishop Auckland, it was £3.49 and I still have it in good condition despite being played hundreds of times. Bought other various versions and formats since.
    Lexicon next?

      1. Lexicon of love live pre orders are up now liveherenow.co.uk

THANK YOU for mentioning this — totally would have missed it!
(Now I have to save more pennies so I can get this–Tears for Fears–blu-ray.)

    1. £3.49 sounds suspiciously cheap!
A 12 in single was normally £2.29 back then!
This was a 3.99 album in all the big record stores in Glasgow, I bought it in hmv. Fame/ mfp budget albums where £2.99 ex Japan quiet life,,, no wonder Woolies went out of business!unless you spent another fiver on pick n mix that would give them some profit!!
But surely a £31 pound rise is inflation busting??
I get that there is more vinyl involved and it is not going to sell by the shed load this time around but a lot of money for old rope,, no recording costs , artwork costs etc, but the Blu-ray is good value!!

          1. Don, Thanks for the reply. I was more referring to John’s mention of the blu-ray being good value, which had me thinking there was an ABC LoL blu-ray on offer. Good to know I didn’t miss something.

  46. Excellent news! Was looking forward to the surround mix of this superb album. Funny I just got The Hurting vinyl a couple of weeks ago thinking they were not going to release any updated version. Little by little I am getting all those LPs I sold 30 years ago. Pre-ordered the blu-ray and vinyl package before reading the article. Thanks for the effort to get great music in these physical formats!

Are we to expect a similar treatment for Songs from the Big Chair?

      1. There was a standalone Blu-ray in 2014 too. If this one sells well, I think SDE will probably offer a repress of SFTBC in two years.

  47. Thanks Paul, ordered as always. So, can you nudge the powers that be for Atmos Mixes for other TFF albums now that we have the bookends? Will be awesome to have a whole collection of their studio albums. Anyway, awesome work, we all appreciate what you are doing!

  48. This is why I check this site every day! Just got the Orbital Blu ray today and after looking it over I got on the website and saw this awesome news! Had to order the bundle!! Thanks so much, Paul!

    1. Ditto – I have a breakfast iPad routine of about 5 sites that starts with the newspaper and ends with SDE as I’m drinking my coffee. It’s always interesting, but days like today it really pays off!

  49. Instant purchase for me.
There were rumours that this was happening and I am delighted that they are true.
A fantastic album and I am so looking forward to hearing both the Atmos & Instrumental mixes.
These discs have evolved so much since the release of The Tipping Point, that they now resemble mini-boxsets.
Many thanks to all involved in their production.

  50. “no-brainer” definition: ridiculously easy decision to purchase highly-desirable item from the Super Deluxe Edition website.

Thanks (kind of) for this new no-brainer release. My bank balance doesn’t like it so much; however, my ears are screaming delightfully and ecstatically in anticipation.

  51. It took me about five seconds to order the bundle – always wanted this in 5.1 – thank you for continuing to work your magic Paul!

  52. This is great Paul. I’ve long hoped that ‘The Hurting’ would get the surround treatment. By far my favourite TFF album. Cheers…

  53. Ordered, of course. Thanks, Paul.

That said, this release will play havoc with my OCD, as it’s number 9 in the series yet chronologically predates number 1 (The Tipping Point).

Maybe I need toremove the slipcases, and begin shelving all the discs alphabetically rather than numerically…….

First world problem, I know :)

  54. Paul,

I didn’t think you were into TFF ;)
That will make it number three of the SDE series I have bought.
    Keep up the great work.

    Keith

P.S. How about Eurovision 2023 being #10 – bad joke, sorry!
P.P.S. Happy birthday Blue Monday – that would sound amazing in atmos.

  55. If the postage cost to the UK was more reasonable i would have jumped at this and i might be cutting my nose off to spite my face but £5 is way too steep.

    1. It is tracked and insured. You are paying for packing, packaging and postage as I always say, so I don’t agree that it’s unreasonable. We certainly make zero profit from this £5 or any of the postage rates for that matter.

Also if this Blu-ray was £28 I think it would still sell just as many copies.

      1. A good point Paul. When I discovered your site back in 2018, I spent a fortune playing catch-up on box sets (though I’ll never get to own Bowie’s Five Years vinyl box).
I tracked down and bought the Blu-ray Audio of The Hurting and many others, but I don’t think I got ANY of them for £28!!!
Well done with this series, a brave idea which has really taken off!

      2. If you consider that some SACD reissues retail at $30-35 and these are stereo only. I would say £23 plus postage is a fair price for a blu-ray release. It also beats paying £200+ for a box set just to get your hands on the blu-ray with an Atmos mix.

    2. Come on and dry your eyes! This blu-ray is a real bargain,a collector’s edition and will quickly sell out.
Try living in EU where you have to pay extra,non-logical taxes which means double prizes for everything you want to order from The U.K.
Thank you Paul and keep up the good work.
      Kind regards,Henrik.

      1. I dried my eyes and bought it just wish the instrumental mix and the two bonus tracks were on CD as it’s murder trying to rip audio from a Blu-ray. I certainly never voted for Britain to leave the EU and all those who did are getting their just desserts now.

  56. Not finished the headline and immediatly ordered. The two Bonus Tracks and the Instrumental Version, what a pleasure/treasure. This Option with the pre-order window and producing on demand was the best choice ever, so no one can complain. Thank you, thank you.

  57. So as i do most nights, just before i go to bed i check in to see what SDE news may have snuck its way out since getting home earlier this afternoon…… and BOOM!
What a day, not only Atmos but unreleased mixes and the album as an intrumental.

Thank you Paul for your tireless work on this series, long may it continue!!

  58. Given John Lennon/The Beatles’ fondness for the number 9, I was really expecting this to be the Atmos mix of Revolver. But this is even cooler! I bought the original Mercury/UMG Blu-Ray Audios of “The Hurting” and “Songs From The Big Chair” in 2014, but The Hurting only included the stereo mix. This will be a nice upgrade. Thanks Paul!

  59. This is amazing, instant order! Can’t wait to hear a Dolby atmos mix of this fine album. Ordered the bundle because…. Why not!!!? Thanks Paul, another great release.

  60. Definitely the fastest blog-to-purchase move I’ve ever made! Very excited about this release!
Slightly disappointing there’s no new SW stereo mix of the full album available – or am I missing a detail somewhere?
The SW stereo instrumental mix will be interesting.
But for me, the new spatial mix is the thing!

  61. Two copies ordered! Thank you, thank you, thank you for making this happen!

Is it too early to ask for Elemental, Raoul & the Kings of Spain and Everybody Loves a Happy Ending? ;-)

In all seriousness, I can’t express enough how grateful I am for this entire series. I can’t even begin to imagine all the hoops that you have to jump through to make these releases a reality. Everybody over on QuadraphonicQuad is very excited. I am thinking this might be the biggest seller yet in the series.

    1. To hear the title cut and “God’s Mistake” from Raoul & the Kings of Spain in a fantastic surround sound mix…a guy can dream, right?

  62. So excited for this one that I actually ordered the wrong product because I was too giddy to pay attention to what I was doing properly! Thanks team for cancelling the original order.

Paul, you’ve made half the dream come true with this. Is it possible we’ll have a similar announcement on Wednesday June 7th for the 30th anniversary of Elemental?

  63. Wonderful news, I really enjoy Steven Wilson mixes.
Would you please give someone a nudge at TFF towers and ask them to repress the SFTBC SW mix vinyl?
I’m surprised there isn’t a Hurting pic disc in line with the other recent releases.

  64. I instantly ordered this. Suffer the children has been one of my favourite songs from the 80’s. Can’t wait for the new mixes. Well done to all that made this happen.

  65. Curiouser and curioser.

I have stereo mixes of the Howlett versions, and have done for a very long time (as has
universal as they were part of an archive
dump to CDs about 14? years ago).

Granted the Watch Me Bleed is barely stereo – but Mad World definitely is (if it’s the same version with the toy Casio keyboard in the intro and middle 8, and with
big stuttering delays on the “world” in the chorus)

I did wonder when they’d finally make it out.

    1. Very interesting, Simon – anything else of interest (unreleased etc.) in that archive dump referred to? If there is, would be good to ‘remind’ Universal so that they can finally see the light of day…..

  66. Ordered! Thank you, Paul. After reading here all this time I had finally decided to get a soundbar soon and I figured I might as well get an Atmos capable one as long as I am going to do that. I was wondering what I would play on it and this Tears For Fears will surely fit the bill. Perfect timing!

  67. According to the Pet Shop Boys website, also released on this day 40 years ago was Blue Monday by New Order.
Did anyone buy both of these iconic records on this day 40 years ago?

    1. I bought The Hurting on the day of release and still have the promo carrier bag that it came in (black and white picture of the cover placed centrally on the bag) Where’s the ‘geek’ emoji?

  68. Excellent addition to the SDE Blu Ray Audio collection. Would it be possible for any outstanding slip cases from my previous SDE Orders to be posted out to me with this latest release in the series please Paul? I have sent a message via SDE contact us tab as well. Cheers, Col.

  69. Pff yet another cash-grab. Who needs another version of this when there’s already been a big SDE?.. bla bla bla (rant) bla.
Just joking of course, this is absolutely thrilling and ordered even before reading the news about the unreleased tracks. This is exactly what this site is about (as far as I am concerned), good music, available in a new form for the first time, in quality packaging (the slipcases are a smashing idea) at an affordable cost.
    Thank you Paul!!!

  70. Ordered. It will be a rediscovery off The Hurting. I only have the album on CD but don’t play it much. The Tipping Point was a nice experience in surround.

  71. Stereo Hi-Res Mix?

If the SW hi-res MC surround is 24/96 this must be based on a hi-res 24/96 master (or even a 24/192 or even higher). So if the original stereo mix is included it must be at least 24/96 as this would surely have to be the source of the MC? Unless there is not enough room on the media.

        1. Steven Wilson prefers not to include it because in his mind it’s not really going to better the original (same with ‘Songs’ and ‘Seeds’) although I realise the Songs From The Big Chair mix came out on vinyl.

          1. I think the fun thing about things like this is it allows us to hear something familiar differently. I totally understand his mindset, but I hope Steve Wilson reconsiders including stereo mixes; of course nothing can replace the original, but with something limited like this, it gives hardcore fans, like me, that sometimes just want the headphone experience, a good excuse to listen to this “new” album a dozen more times.

  72. If we’re revisiting box sets that should have included a 5.1 blu-ray, surely Simple Minds Street Fighting Years should have followed the previous three releases. It was criminal that ‘Belfast Child’ was never given the Steven Wilson surround treatment. Never understood the reasoning for that unless there’s something I don’t know.

  73. Believe it or not, I have never heard this album; it barely made a ripple in the U.S. upon release. So this blu-ray – that I just purchased – will be my introduction to these songs! Thank you, Paul S.!

  74. WOW!
One of my favourite albums and the first I ever bought on vinyl when it was in the charts!

Thank you Paul for making this happen.

  75. Ordered this earlier. Now I am not so bothered that I sold my box set of this, as this will be all I need. This is going to be a big seller. Thanks Paul.

  76. Gobsmacked.
I believe I begged for this when you released “The Tipping Point” Blu-Ray.
    Thank you,
    Thank you,
    Thank you…
    Keep up the good work!

  77. Hi Paul, can I clarify the Hi Res Stereo Mixes please. Is there a SW Hi Res stereo mix with vocals or is the SW Hi Res stereo mix only an instrumental stereo mix?

With regards to the Original stereo mix will this be Hi Res flat transfer? The Pure Blu Ray Hi Res Stereo Remaster is pretty nasty.

    1. No there isn’t an SW stereo mix with vocals. Don’t know about the original mix yet, which is why it has ‘TBC’ by it on this post.

          1. Thank you, this will be critical to the 2 channel Hi Res stalwarts amongst us. The Pure Blu Ray remaster sounds crisp & clean but is loud & compressed.

          2. And the 2013 CD had a fault (sounds like a tape scratch) in “Ideas as Opiates”.

  78. thanks Paul, that’s ordered. I think you mentioned that you are looking into combined orders. I have five outstanding now which is the price of an additional release, so if there is any way you could merge them together that would be great. I’m totally happy with three or four bundled deliveries per year

    1. I’m in for such bundled deliveries service too. In this day and age of insane shipping prices and absurd custom charges, offering to combine multiple orders into single shipments will become IMHO a competitive advantage.

    2. or alternatively I’d be happy with an annual subscription as the only release I haven’t bought so far is Gilbert O’Sullivan as all I have of him is memories of the early 70s and a greatest hits package for when I forget the tune to Clair and I wouldn’t have minded having it if pushed.

  79. Hmmm… got SFTBC, SOL and TTP in spatial audio but think I’ll give this one a swerve…

    AS IF!!! Ordered!

Serious question, Paul – have you considered offering subscriptions for those who intend to hoover up every SDE Surround Series release?

    1. Paul has commented on a subscription service previously and mentioned that the “window” purchase opportunity basically negates the need for it. However, I will be on a walking holiday for over 3 months later in the year with only occasional access to the internet, so unless there is a subscription service I will likely miss out on any released during that time, which will be annoying as I have all but one of the series so far.

    1. I agree with you when it comes to 5.1.
I have not been “overblown” by his Atmos mixes.
This said I am still to find an atmos mix I like as much or better than its 5.1 counterpart.

  80. Great news, great album, an instant preorder, I’m looking forward to getting this. I was listening to this album today to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

On another note, The Cranberries posted they’ve made their album Everybody Else Is Doing It So Why Can’t We available in Dolby Atmos on Apple Music, what are the chances of getting a physical blu-ray release for this album?

  81. Do people generally have a blu-ray player as part of their hi-fi? I know I don’t and don’t know many who do. I’m genuinely interested.

    1. I don’t have a large set up by any means, but I use a denon multi disc player (DBT 1713-UD), that I use for CDs, or DVD, or blu-rays, and it works well. I have it linked to my PC monitor for using the select screen. I only have some Q Acoustics bookshelf speakers, but having tinnitus anything much better would be wasted on me I think.

    2. I have an Oppo BDP-95 Blu Ray player I use it for audio only, to play the 24/96 blurays in stereo, I haven’ t got atmos as don’t have the room for umpteen speakers in my small abode but it sure sounds good even in stereo. It’s the only way to play hi resolution apart from dvd audio which blu ray players will also do, and streaming online which will provided these higher resolutions. recommended even for stereo . Traditional cd players can only do a maximum of 24/44 which used to be classed in HDCD bracket. Most standard CDs are 16/44.

      1. I have a related cousin to the Oppo BDP-95/93 models, a Cambridge Audio Azur 651BD and it’s used as part of my Denon AVR 5.1 set up. The Azur is a great bit of kit.

Of course I still use my Sony ES integrated amp for vinyl duties as the difference between the Denon AVR and Sony is night and day.

    3. @plc69 speaking only for myself… My blu-ray player is the heart of my hi-fi /home cinema system and being a universal player (it also plays the excellent dvd-audio and SACD formats), and serves my particular needs very well.

      1. Thanks. My player can play SA-CDs and (I think) DVD Audio – but doesn’t play blu-rays. I’m genuinely intrigued, as I’ve never considered adding a blu-ray to my hi-fi system.

    4. I bought an Oppo Universal Disc player a few years ago & put together a surround system ostensibly for 4K movies. Once I realized it plays virtually every type of Hi Rez Surround Sound audio disc as well, I use the system about 80% of the time for music-only discs!

      1. I’ve had a regular CD player, Denon CD/SACD/DVD-A player, an Oppo BD83E, and now an Oppo UDP 205 that I use for 4K movies, Blu-ray and DVD multi-channel music (including Atmos Blu-rays) and use as a DAC/Streaming device to stream my ripped CDs and hi-res downloads stored on a computer (approaching 1TB). I like being able to call up an album or track without finding the physical medium and loading it.

      2. Never had the opportunity to try out an Oppo. I know they’re very well regarded and the go-to for lots of people (although AFAIK no longer in production).

I opted for a more modestly priced Pioneer VSX 930K which plays just about everything bar UHD Blu-ray and is Atmos 7.2 (I’m only using it in a 5.1 config). My main reason to purchase was 3D video and dual signal output, and I use it mainly to route satellite TV signal to another room whilst listening to whatever source I like in the lounge.

Been very pleased with it and it forms part of my audio system for Blu-ray, DVD-A and SACDs. I don’t think it’s in production either though they are still around through second hand routes. From a quick look on their website, Pioneer have other universal players available.

    5. I haven’t had a dedicated CD player for probably 20 years. I have 2 blu-ray players, one region A and the other region B, connected to my system back in NZ (but I am currently working overseas for a year). The blu-ray players play every type of disc I own (which is great). As I have a 11.2 (non-atmos) amp I will be interested in hearing how a recently purchased atmos-enabled blu-ray player uses those channels when I return home and get that connected toward the end of the year.

    6. For more than 15 years, I use a single system for video and audio content playback. Watching TV/movies and listening to (surround) music is done with the very same 5.1 set-up in the living room.

In its latest incarnation, a 9.2 Denon A/V receiver is at the center of the system, and a Denon multi-disc player allows me to view/listen to my SACDs, DVD-As, DVD-Vs and Blu-ray discs (my previous multi-disc player didn’t play Blu-ray discs but did play HDCDs).

I also connected to this A/V receiver a DJ set-up (including 2x direct-drive turntables, 2x CDJ players, and a mix table), with which I play my vinyl records and most of my CDs. For surround sound, I can apply here the various listening modes processed by the A/V receiver.

Speaker wise, next to the 5.1 set up in the living room, the Denon A/V receiver also powers a 2.1 set-up in the garden. The remaining available connections on the receiver are now teasing me to install a couple of ceiling speakers for the famous Atmos experience; but as I rent the place, I am not yet sure how to approach the challenge…

  82. Fab news … ordered .. goes nicely with the 30th anniversary box set … can that really be 10 years back
Everybody Loves A Happy Ending would be a great idea too … such a gem

  83. Just wow!! What a masterstroke to release this fabulous album as the next one in the SDE surround sound series.
I have owned the previously released (stereo) HFPA blu-ray since it was released and although the sound quality was excellent I always felt underwhelmed at it not having a 5.1 surround sound mix. Thank you once again Paul and all of the team at SDE for bringing this beauty to life.

  84. Thanks Paul, just ordered the bundle. another excellent addition to the SDE exclusive blu-rays. just got my confirmation email, thanks again

  85. Awesome news. Still my favorite album of there’s. I can still remember first hearing them on KROQ in LA and purchasing the vinyl back in 1983.

  86. Instabuy! Any chance there’s a Tipping Point SDE slipcase left? I didn’t bite on the last few SDE exclusives.

First post from a long-time daily visitor from Baltimore who appreciates your enthusiasm & efforts, Paul! Been introduced by you & members of this forum to a ton of new favorites that I might have otherwised missed. Cheers all! JB

      1. but you are still shipping them with the shakespears sister BR…. no chance to relocate some of those slipcases to the Hurting orders that would like one?

      2. Customer nightmare too – no response received to email sent about adding Tipping Point slipcase to an order – unfortunately no customer service received

        1. Not sure how not getting an answer to a question within hours is a “nightmare”? The Tipping Point slipcases are unavailable for the time being. If you could add one to your order they’d be up on the website.

          1. Thanks – sorry, I should have clarified that the message referred to was sent last year 22/10/22 when placing the Orbital bundle order and the TTF slip cases were listed on the site at that time. Lesson learnt is not to order from a mobile phone that may not display all items adequately.

    1. I was planning to add the previous Tears for Fears and Xpropaganda slipcases to my next order (which is this one), so that I could get tracked shipping to Australia. However, this is not possible. In hindsight, I should have ordered them earlier instead of waiting.

  87. I keep trying to escape, but you keep on dragging me back in. Still if I am going to get dragged back in this is one hell of an album to be held hostage to.

Another notch on the bed post Paul. Well done.

  88. That was a quick decision! Ordered immediately. Sometimes it pays to check SDE more than once a day, as this hadn’t yet been posted when I looked just a couple of hours ago this morning (in the US). This could sell out fast, so I pounced.
Many thanks to Paul and all involved with getting this released.

  89. Fantastic Paul! Ordered! I have an Atmos set-up but haven’t installed the height speakers, but have it in 7.1 surround for everything else. I had to take a second look at my box set, as I had thought the DVD was surround, which of course it wasn’t. Should be a fun listen! Thanks for offering this must have release!

  90. Paul, I can’t wait until May for this. I love how you’ve been working with Tears for Fears on The Tipping Point and now this. I don’t suppose this means we might see future TFF spatial audio for albums between Seeds of Love and The Tipping Point?

Regardless, this one is a Holy Grail release. One of my all-time favorite albums.

  91. Well this announcement could not have been any more exciting! An all time favorite…..I have the previous stereo Blu-Ray and the box set but this bundle was an instant purchase. Great job Paul and kudos to Roland and Curt for making it happen!!! I’m sure Steven nailed this mix as usual.

  92. Has anyone heard back re a refund of the Banquet Records / Pryzm gig that was cancelled with no replacement or refund
Will be saving my TFF money until this is sorted

    1. The gig wasn’t cancelled – it was postponed. However, I do agree that we should have been updated as to what is going on even if it is just to say to say they are still working on a date. I’ll try and find out.

  93. Great news, ordered some copies, together with a friend of mine.
Paul, can you clarify something? Wasn’t the reason back in 2014, for not having a surroundmix on that Pure Audio release, that the original multitrack tapes were lost? I vaguely remember something about that. If so, is Steven Wilson doing the AI thing, that was also used for the reissue of The Beatles’ Revolver surroundmix?

  94. Fantastic, really looking forward to this. Many thanks for your hard work securing releases like this Paul….
PS. Are there any of the slipcases available for the xPropaganda release from last year?

  95. Read this on Steven Wilson’s Instagram an hour or so ago and couldn’t wait for it to appear here! Ordered straight away – well done Paul, amazing work to publish this under the SDE banner.

  96. After ‘Songs From The Big Chair’ and ‘Seeds Of Love’ sounding great in surround, it was a no brainer that ‘The Hurting’ needed to be released in surround after being sadly left off the box set.
Well done Paul and all involved in getting this release pushed through. I’m sure it will be another great surround mix.

  97. Blu-ray pre-ordered and looking forward to it especially the instrumental mix of the album, thanks Paul and thanks Tears For Fears!

  98. “Apart from the first single version of ‘Pale Shelter’, none of Mike Howlett’s work has ever been released”

Let’s not forget the b-side “The Prisoner” ;)

  99. A worthy addition to the 2013 box set and thankfully with enough bonus content to satisfy even those who bought the original stereo-only Blu-ray audio. (I didn’t.) Let’s hope that the original stereo mix avoids the issues that plagued both the 2013 CD and Blu-ray.

Speaking of issues, I certainly would’ve welcomed the inclusion of the proper b-side mixes of “Ideas as Opiates” and “We Are Broken”. I wonder if that was considered? Both deserve a digital reissue. (I got a file of the original “We Are Broken” in CD quality thanks to another fan, but you know the tagline of this site…! Also, the track is missing the first beat on that CD.)

But even without them (or the music videos!), the inclusion of the instrumental mix and the two newly discovered recordings make this essential for any TFF fan…

    1. Indeed, both the correct “We Are Broken” B-side and the B-side version of “Ideas as Opiates” are still absent of any of The Hurting reissues… Well, and so is “Saxophones as Opiates”!

Let’s hope these three tracks will appear on some future Tears For Fears CD: on a The Hurting 45th anniversary reissue, on an updated B-sides compilation, on a comprehensive anthology multi-disc box set…

      1. I didn’t bring up “Saxophones as Opiates” because Paul told us that the band explicitly vetoed it, so I doubt they’d give the OK to any future release. But the other two tracks were errors on the box set.

Agree that some B-sides / rarities compilation would be a good fit. Maybe they could expand Saturnine, Martial & Lunatic with all the missing b-sides (and a 5.1 mix :P). I also remember Paul saying that a great version of “Mothers Talk” was found too late to include on the SFTBC box set. The same song’s regular 7″ mix (the “funk mix”) is also rare on CD, although it’s just an edit of the album version and therefore less interesting than the dry mix (the “1st mix”) we’ve gotten on the 2006 and 2014 deluxe editions. Another track skipped on the box sets is the Full Version of “Sowing the Seeds of Love”, though I have since acquired the CD single that has it.

  100. What a wonderful titel again in the series ! I have ordered it straight away. Excellent job, Paul ! Looking forward to the next one.

  101. I only wish there were a way to combine shipping on these Blu-ray Audio releases–the shipping charges really add up over time for each single issue when shipping to the USA.

    1. I get it Brian, but believe me it’s very hard to try and get one of these lined up, so to coordinate two together would be a miracle…

  102. Thanks Paul, Roland, Curt, Steven and everyone else involved.
    This is an instant purchase.
    Well done.
But yes, where have those 40 years gone…?

  103. Fantastic addition to the series. Maybe even the best one yet!
    Well done Paul.

Had to snag this even though I dont have anyway of listening to the atmos mix. However I will listen to the Instrumental mix via my TV.
