The Art of Noise / Noise in the City: Live in Tokyo, 1986

Previously unreleased live show on limited white vinyl and CD

A previously unreleased complete Art of Noise concert, recorded in August 1986, at Tokyo’s Nihon Seinenkan will be issued on limited edition white vinyl and CD as Noise in the City: Live in Tokyo, 1986.

The album includes tracks such as ‘Moments in Love’, ‘Beatbox’, ‘Peter Gunn’, ‘Legs’, ‘Paranoimia’ and ‘Eye Of A Needle’ and ‘In The Mood’. On stage are Anne Dudley and JJ Jeczalik with Dave Bronze on bass, Simon Moreton on percussion, Paul Robinson on drums, and The Noisettes (Katie Humble, Pepe Lemer, and Linda Taylor) on vocals.

Noise in the City: Live in Tokyo, 1986 is also available on CD (click image to enlarge)

This LP was made possible when Anne Dudley, JJ Jeczalik, and Gary Langan returned to Tokyo for live dates in 2017. They found that the concert had been recorded for FM radio broadcast and ZTT/Art of Noise expert Ian Peel (who writes the liner notes for this live album), tracked down the original multitrack master tapes to a vault in London. The recordings were newly mixed this year by Gary Langan, in preparation for this release.

The album is a 2LP set and is pressed on 180g white vinyl. It comes in a gatefold sleeve and is a limited edition of 1500 numbered units with only 500 earmarked for the UK.

Noise in the City is released on 6 August 2021. SDE has a limited allocation, so secure yours by ordering via the SDE shop using this link or the buttons below. A money-saving 2LP white vinyl + CD bundle is available.

  1. Amazon.fr seems to be permanent optimistic when coming to deliveries of new releases. Just got an email saying they are trying to obtain the “Noise in the City” LP, and will contact me when they have a delivery estimate…

Same happened to the ‘Zappa in New York’ reissue, which eventually got cancelled. This is what I get (and probably deserve) for cheating on the SDEStore…

  2. Paul, just so you know the vinyl edition I got from you had a pressing flaw on it, with a ‘lump’ of plastic on top of the grooves. I’ve managed to get that off, but it’s still got a surface scratch which is annoying during a few seconds of ‘Beatbox’. Just something to feedback to Music on Vinyl. the CD is fine!

    1. Aah, sorry about that. It’s all sold out everywhere so a refund would be the only option I’m afraid, but sounds like you are willing to live with it, so thanks.

  3. The versions of Backbeat (Tokyo to Hammersmith and Back) on the “Visible Silence” video and the “Re-Works” ep were both edited a slightly differently. Both had their pluses and minuses. I am so excited to see Gary has remastered and hopefully corrected the minuses and combined up the pluses!!
Also…another person here anxiously awaiting a “Below The Waste” deluxe edition!!
Thanks for all you do Paul. Cheers.

    1. Seattle, WA. USA, Finally received my disc today from whomever I purchased it from. Sorry, Not SDE, which would have probably been better.
Anyway, “Thank you, Gary Langan”. I couldn’t be more pleased with the mix on the entire album.

      1. If anyone’s still looking for the vinyl, It can be obtained from Burning Shed, albeit at a price that’s higher than SDE’s price.

  4. Is there any reason the CD is so expensive? And I don’t mean particularly from your shop Paul, as it costs £18.99 elsewhere. That’s unusually high for one CD with seemingly nothing extra in terms of packaging? Or am I missing something?

  5. Ordered from SDE. There was a VHS video in 1986 called “Visible Silence” although that has “Backbeat” on it, so this might not be the exact same concert that was filmed, or maybe it is but they edited it down to the best ones. Anyway ordered. Regarding SDEs of the China period, i think anything between “Kiss” 1988 and “Art Of Love” 1990 qualifies for “Below The Waste” which was their least interesting album lets be honest. Anything after that was just marketing remixes for China. There’s already been a “…Debussy” deluxe. A singles box set 1983-1999 with original artwork would be nice though.

  6. Assuming this is the same concert that was used for the Re-works of Art of Noise album back in the day, then I’m in! Off to the SDE store for me :D

  7. CD from SDE for me. Never a dull moment with Art Of Noise. I saw this tour in Chicago and still have fond (but fading) memories.

“I have just one question, which requires a simple ‘yes’ or ‘yes’ answer: Should we bring the Noisettes back out?”

  8. I’m slightly reluctant about live albums from bands who are heavily based in studio sample wizardry as they sometimes don’t translate well, even though I know Anne Dudley can make up for a lot (her piano versions of classic AoN tracks are nothing short of fantastic).

I would love to hear this before buying just to make sure it’s for me, but like everyone else I’m impatiently waiting on the next round of deluxe reissues of their classic albums, for which the radio silence has been deafening.

    1. If you have the Re-Works EP, that should give you a sense of what the live tracks will sound like, as they are from the same tour.

The only “classic” AoN album that hasn’t been deluxified yet is Below The Waste. And yes, it seems we’ve been waiting ages for it (after all, the In-No-Sense deluxe came out in 2018, I think).

    2. Anyone that doesn’t have it, take my advice and get yourself a copy of Dudley’s Ancient and Modern album You’ll thank me. Currently there are copies on eBay for @ £2 delivered.

      1. Hello Paul, I was about to ask the same CD question, I’ve recently purchased the reissues of AON studio albums, just learning today there was ever a live album available for them so thank you! CD ordered!

  9. Excellent, can’t wait for this. And future (overdue) remasters of later China releases.

But has Gary Langan now got a time machine?
The liner notes say he mixed this (from the multi-tracks Ian Peel found) on 8th August 2021, and officially this is released on 6th August 2021.
