The Best Of Fad Gadget / 2LP vinyl
2LP silver-coloured vinyl • 1000 units only
The 2001 ‘Best Of’ from Fad Gadget will be issued on vinyl for the first time in September. The double coloured vinyl pressing will be limited to 1000 units.
Fad Gadget (aka Francis John Tovey) was the first signing to the Mute label and alongside Human League, Cabaret Voltaire and The Normal, was at the forefront of the Electronic Movement of the late 70s/early 80s.
This collection features tracks from Fad Gadget’s four albums –Fireside Favourites (1980), Incontinent (1981), Under The Flag (1982), and Gag (1984) – and includes debut single ‘Back To Nature’ (from 1979).
This was issued on CD in 2001 (with a bonus disc of remixes) but this will be the first time it has been out on vinyl, issued as part of the MUTE 4.0 (178>TOMORROW) series. Mute have confirmed they will issue a career-spanning box set in early 2020 marking the 40th anniversary of his first album Fireside Favourites.
The Best of Fad Gadget is released via Mute on 6 September 2019. Pre-order a copy of this silver 2LP vinyl Best Of via the SDE shop using this link, or the button below.

According to Mutes website:
“This release is the first stage of Mute’s celebration of Frank Tovey’s work, to be followed by a career-spanning box set in early 2020 marking the 40th anniversary of his first album Fireside Favourites.”
I have the original vinyls :) have to dig them out..
The question for me with all these new vinyl releases of old favourites is – would I listen to this more than a couple of times? Basically is it truly worth purchasing if it just gathers dust?
I think thats the same as everything and eventually we will never be able to listen to everything we’ve ever bought again. But it is I suppose called collecting, and horribly, I am a collector and love Fad. Have all the original vinyls too (well not Gag) but bought the 2 CD set few years back. I saw hime first supporting Toyah when she was at her peak (Anthem days – where is our vinyl deluxe of that please!) and as a prudish 16 year old was aghast at the spitting shaving foam. But Swallow It had me hooked and to this day at my sunday night home discos, very easily fall to Ricky’d Hand as my go mad moment!
There’s already been a career spanning box so I wonder what the new one will include?
That must be Fad Gadget by Frank Tovey by Fad Gadget by … which is “only” a best of. So let’s hope for a box with all albums of FG & FT, all b-sides, all mixes, live stuff, new remixes … and add some extra! What about a can of shaving foam? A pop-up fireside?
The 2cd version released years ago was awful sounding, very loud and several vinyl rips. A proper cd or digital version would be a warm welcome too.
ordered. thank you
What, no Swallow It or Plain Clothes?! Pass. Maybe the box set coming out will be more complete.
Yup, Bridge. The real catch here seems to be that upcoming retro box. Collections mostly way too calculated in their picks.
Great Mute, thanks for NOTHING.
Limited Edition on shitty colored vinyl. What about those of us who want plain old non-gimmicky black vinyl??
all vinyl is coloured….they have to add the black
Looks absolutely great. And will hopefully sound great as well. Looking forward to listen to formerly seven inch only classics like ‘Back to Nature’ and ‘Ricky’s Hand’ for the first time on vinyl without any crackles ..
And it gets better: Mute website says “This release is the first stage of Mute’s celebration of Frank Tovey’s work, to be followed by a career-spanning box set in early 2020 marking the 40th anniversary of his first album Fireside Favourites.”
Another classic rerelease to come on Mute: Pop Group’s “Y” remastered!
For the record: There was a ‘Fad Gadget Singles’ vinyl in 1986. So “first time without crackles” isn’t accurate .. which by no means makes this new release less charming.
Loved Fad since discovering him on a Flexipop flexidisc, coupled with a Depeche Mode track. I’ll be getting this to go with the Mute 40 of Fads first LP, and the Silicon Teens LP which I Ickes up for a tenner at Rough Trade East today!
