The Lover Speaks / deluxe reissue

loverspeaks

The Lover Speaks – British duo David Freeman and Joseph Hughes – only released one eponymous album in 1986 – and then all but disappeared. That album, which features the original version of No More I Love You’s – famously covered by Annie Lennox – will be reissued in June as an expanded deluxe edition.

The Jimmy Iovine produced record has been remastered with eight bonus tracks added to the 10-track album, including remixes of singles Every Lover’s Sign, Tremble Dancing and I Close My Eyes and Count To Ten (the Dusty Springfield classic). Six of these bonus tracks have never appeared on CD before.

The 16-page booklet not only contains sleeve notes and photos but also includes track annotations from Freeman (vocals) and Hughes (guitars, keyboards).

The Lover Speaks will be released on 22 June 2015.

  1. It is so great. I sold this CD many years ago and was so sad about it, because it was so expensive to rebuy. Now i can buy it with a big amount of bonus tracks. Thank you Paul for the information.

  2. Dont worry mr vero, i preordered the cd the moment i knew! As Chairman of the Release the Dubs Foundation, your scandalous omission of the dont tell me lies dub on Breathe’s Megaopus 11/1o reissue is remembered :). I Was waiting for someone to shoot me on that comment given all dubs are present, correct and edited so in this case you are granted the honorary post of President of the foundation. PS Surely though there was a Samba Dub of Julia’s Genius ;)

You’ll be glad to know that the loudness wars do not exist in my sonic universe. :) Any projects I produce are remastered by an excellent engineer who shares the same listening aesthetic as I do. Then I personally QC the master before it goes to manufacture. So far, we’ve had great feedback regarding the sound quality. I understand your desire to have the best sound possible.

    1. Thanks, Stevo! I like lurk in dark corners. LOL! The least I could do is thank everyone for their support. I appreciate it greatly. It allows me to continue doing the work I love.

  4. I see the Halo James album is being issued also :) eightiestastic …cherry pop need to get their licensing onto parlaphone for shades of liberty by silent running, that album deserves the reissue treatment

  5. i loved this album when it came out, that 4aD feel, no more i love you’s is a great song….not a fan of the Annie Lennox version, it’s totally inferior but i hope it made some money for the lover speaks, i think this might be getting purchased :)

  6. Jumping on this one, great price too.
I think most people knew NMILY was a cover version given that it was on an album of cover versions…still prefer the original of course.

  7. I got this album on casette from the Our Price bargain bin, not long after they’d supported Eurythmics on their UK Revenge tour. I enjoyed TLS more than Eurythmics themselves, which was quite a surprise. Of course, they left off the amazing Dusty cover from the album itself, so this reissue immediately becomes an essential purchase for that alone.

And I second the praise for Sleep Like Breathing…the biggest flop single of Alison Moyet’s early solo career, for some unfathomable reason. If the Cocteaus had done the track, everyone would have been falling over themselves….

  8. I will definitely be purchasing this CD album release. I never got to buy the original back in 1986 as I did not realise the band had an album at the time, although I did buy the 7inch vinyl of “No More I Love Yous” which I thought, and still do, was a brilliant record that should have got so much higher in the singles chart than it did. Although I do like the Annie Leonnox version, of which I also have, I still think the original by The Lover Speaks is the better of the two. Maybe the radio stations just did not plug it enough because it is beyond me how people could not have liked it. I only wish there was an extended version.

  9. Just one of the greatest albums of all time. Not buying though till VV says that was all that was in the tape cabinet, i know he has an aversion to dub mixes….

Seriously long overdue and everyone should buy it.

    1. Excuse me, Mr. Mike! :) I do not have an aversion to dub mixes. Although, my doctor says I should try to avoid them when possible. A bit like fried foods. LOL! In fact, the dub mixes of “Every Lover’s Sign” are included on this expanded edition. Everything that was in the vaults has been lovingly transferred to disc. Nothing left in the cabinet except sawdust. As for not including dub mixes? I only do that if I have time constraints. Would you rather have the extended 12″ and the original 7″ or a dub? If there are no issues with timing, then I’ll put everything on a reissue including all dubs and instrumentals. I’m working on two such projects right now. Watch this space!

  10. “No More I Love Yous” is one of the great lost singles of the 80s. I remember seeing it on The Chart Show and buying it on 7″ the next day. Also worth checking out David Freeman’s excellent duet with Alison Moyet, “Sleep Like Breathing”.

  11. Paul not quite right. The band recorded a second album “the big lie” the record company refused to release. It could be found for download but I doubt that it is allowed to post here where…

  12. I’ve got it on vinyl and put it on from time to time. I look forward to this reissue. I hope that they don’t partake of the loudness wars.

I thought I read somewhere that a second album was actually recorded but never issued. Maybe not. Maybe lost to the ravages of time.

    Thanks for the update!

As for the second album, “The Big Lie”, it was recorded and the label decided not to release it. Because of that, it sits in limbo unable to be licensed due to restrictions.

  13. i don’t rate this album among my favorites, but it is certainly worth owning. i’ll be happily trading-in my original for this deluxe edition.

  14. OMG! Fantastic news! One of my top ten albums of all time. Yes, I’m sure most people have never heard of this band, but it must have struck a note at that time in my life. I can bet more than a few folks thought “No More I love You’s” was an Annie Lennox track.

    1. I knew “No More I Love Yous” was by The Lover Speaks as I bought the 7inch vinyl single when it came out back in 1986. It deserved to get higher in the singles chart but as usual, with a great song, the general public did not buy it.
