Thomas Dolby / Aliens Ate My Buick vinyl reissue

180g clear vinyl

Thomas Dolby’s 1988 album Aliens Ate My Buick will be reissued on ‘crystal clear’ vinyl early next year.

His third album album features the singles ‘Airhead’ (a US Dance hit), ‘Hot Sauce’ and ‘My Brain Is Like A Sieve’ and saw Dolby move in a more funk-based direction (George Clinton wrote ‘Hot Sauce’ and had been collaborating with Dolby in the fluid, studio-based project ‘Dolby’s Cube’).

The vinyl reissue features the original seven-track vinyl version of the album (‘May The Cube Be With You’ was a cassette/CD-only bonus song) and is pressed on 180g ‘crystal clear’ vinyl. It comes with an insert and is limited to 1000 units worldwide (with 350 allocated to the UK).

Aliens Ate My Buick will be released on 24 January 2025, via Music On Vinyl. You can pre-order it via the SDE shop using this link or the button below.

  1. It’s the only album of his I never owned, because I never liked it, at the time.
Over time, on live releases, I’ve come to appreciate most of those songs, but never in their original versions.
Wishing for some new material, his latest one, although unappreciated, and unnoticed, was magnificent.

  2. I’ve loved this MOV Thomas Dolby reissue series. ‘Aliens…’ is my personal least favourite album of his – and it’s still really great, especially Budapest by Blimp. He tends to be remembered for his wacky synth boffin image and quirky uptempo tracks like ‘She Blinded Me With Science’ and ‘Hyperactive’ but he’s actually brilliant at some really lovely ballads that are often very moving both lyrically and melodically – Clouburst at Shingle Street, The Flat Earth, Budapest, I Love You Goodbye, Beauty of a Dream, 17 Hills.. . I’ve just realised there wasn’t a vinyl release of Map of the Floating City so I’m really hoping MOV cap this run off with that.

  3. Thinking about it, it would be great if MOV release the Blinded By Science EP. She Blinded Me With Science and One Of Our Submarines don’t appear on The Golden Age Of Wireless so it would be great to get these two tracks in their 12″ versions along with extended versions of Wind power and Flying North.

    1. I have heard that Thomas is rather cold to the idea of surround sound mixes of his materials (which seems rather odd). Hopefully. he will have a change of heart at some point in the near future.

  4. I bought this first time round, thought it was terrible compared to The Golden Age Of Wireless and The Flat Earth (except for Budapest By Blimp) – seemed he was trying too hard to be wacky and it all sounds rather forced.

  5. This album and the next, Astronauts and Heretics, have never seen CD remasters, right? Any chance of special editions of those in the near future?

  6. Thanks Paul, a really great album, had it on cd when it came out, but switched to vinyl several years ago, great to have this, finally.

I used to make mixtapes from my cd’s, for my then girlfriend, and one of the tracks i used was “My Brain Is Like A Sieve”, got into a bit of trouble for that track selection, allthough it was 100 % true, god bless her !

  7. My favourite Dolby album. A close 2nd is Flat Earth. How this wasn’t a huge seller I’ll never understand. A true musical genius. Very pleased to be able to purchase this on vinyl.

  8. This is a great album and I will be purchasing it. Too bad they couldn’t tack on the CD bonus track. I hope one day a deluxe edition gets released. It’s begging for remastering.

  9. Excellent. Glad this one is coming out as well. It was just the first four albums I was hoping for and this is the last of those four. I already have The Flat Earth on blue vinyl and Astronauts & Heretics on gold vinyl, both numbered to 750. I had notification from MOV this morning that my grey/silver vinyl edition, numbered to 1000,of The Golden Age Of Wireless has shipped. Shortly after that, got a message about Aliens Ate My Buick and ordered direct straight away. (Sorry Paul). I don’t know if MOV will be releasing any more Thomas Dolby but anything else is a bonus.
