Queen are to release a 40th anniversary celebration of two gigs at London’s Rainbow Theatre later this year, across a multitude of audio and video formats.
Recorded by Roy Thomas Baker, the band’s 31 March 1974 show at the Rainbow was so good, it was touted as a live follow-up to Queen II for a while, before this idea was eventually shelved and Sheer Heart Attack became the third album. When that record was a massive success (along with single Killer Queen) Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon and Roger Taylor returned to the venue in November 1974 for two further dates.
Apart from the single CD version (which contains the November show only) the forthcoming Live at the Rainbow ’74 releases contain (to varying degrees) both shows, newly restored, edited, mixed, and digitally remastered. A two CD digi-pack edition has the March show on one CD and a November show on the other, while a DVD (or SD Blu-ray) features the November show with four ‘bonus’ tracks from March. A double gatefold vinyl will include “an audio reproduction” of the March show (I don’t know what that means either) on one record with highlights from November on the other.
There will be two box sets; a 4LP vinyl box, with two records featuring the March show and two featuring the November show, and the inevitable super deluxe edition which eschews vinyl and consists of the two CDs, the DVD AND blu-ray, a 60-page hardback book along with reproductions of many memorabilia items (tickets, show programmes, badges, stickers etc.).
In addition to the above, North America exclusively gets a Blu-ray+CD combo box, which sounds like a decent alternative to the super deluxe edition.
The March show has never been officially released, while the November gig was released in part in 1992 on VHS. In total 15 songs from both shows haven’t been issued on any Queen live album.

Amazon Canada has the Super Deluxe Edition listed for under $55 Canadian. I was not going to get it, but I doubt I can purchase the CDs and the Blu-ray individually for that, so I have pre-ordered it. A good option for those who want to save a little money.
I had excepts on a Laserdisc of Queen Rare Live and always wanted the entire show. This is awesome!
Most of the individual items have just dropped in price by around a fiver on amazon.co.uk – so the Blu-Ray is currently £9.99 for example – apart from the super deluxe box which has gone up to £112.99.
Looks like the single CD may have been cancelled?
I have the VHS which I transferred to DVD years ago. The Novembershow is a real killer. Nice to see this finally released properly.

Steve hope all is well, i am in Melbourne. In regards to US edition blurays
unless they’re region free a US disc i hate to say will not play in our system. We are region code B and the US are code A. In a few weeks time as an example
the Allman Brothers Band huge box set 3 discs on bluray at this stage still no sign of UK/European release it’s seems to be only aimed at the American market, once again no chance of playing unless it’s region free
I asked Universal about this and was told that all the blu-rays and DVDs should be region free, so should play everywhere. Hope that helps.
As a long time fan, I recall an interview with Brian May who stated he disliked the idea of region-discs. His feelings were that region-discs do little to curb piracy…people who want to buy it, will buy it, people who want to pirate it, will download.
I have all the Queen DVDs, every one is region-free. Coincidence?
Very much looking forward to this; heard the March gig on a bootleg in 1996 and sounded incredible even then.
Now if only Brian and Roger could devote some attention to re-releasing the BBC sessions or the 80s 12-inch mixes…

Fatoldbloke Unfortunately US bluray discs will not play on our system, you will have no problems if the bd’s are from the UK & Europe as they have the same region code. SD here we go, instead of high definition transfer you have a standard definition transfer, the reasons are the original content or show could have been filmed on a low budget in this
case standard def, what this means the original content cannot be presented in HD, standard format on bluray and dvd do not look the same.
The compression is far better on bd, as will naturally the encoding. Hope this helps
I’ve disagreed with certain format choices here in the past but I think the range of options for this release is spot on. Serious collectors can opt for the SDE with usual superfluous trinkets while those who just want the music/video are catered for. Nothing, apart from some ’74 repros, is exclusive to the box. Happy days! I bought “Box Of Tricks” in ’92. The Rainbow video only had about 20 minutes worth of footage but it was bloody good stuff. As a Queen fan I’ve been waiting for this for years. So, 2-CD and blu-ray for me, please. Nice surprise, seeing as I thought all we were getting this year was yet another compilation with a few “new” tracks thrown in!
@Paul: as it seems the blu ray doesn’t have both concerts on it and it doesn’t come with the cds. I think this was meant above. So you have to buy at least two things instead of one when the blu ray would also contain an audio only section with both both concerts in it.

Another stupid multi format release. How about giving us everything on the Bluray and be done with it. Why they don’t put it all on one disc at a reasonable price is beyond me. Head games with pricing are frustrating, they lost me on this one.
Er, they have given us just the blu-ray, or just the CDs, or just the DVD, or blu-ray+CD, or 2LP or 4LP or SDE box. What exactly are you unhappy about? The Amazon prices will come down by at least 35%, so I would ignore that for the time being. If you want *everything* on one blu-ray disc for £20 then that is rather unrealistic. They are running a business and need to make a profit. That is more likely to allow future releases on fans’ wish-lists to happen.

I feel your pain. When American Artists or movies have better covers, features and or price and they’re American; yet the rest of the world gets better than we do. I buy from the UK and Japan, when prices and or packaging/quality are better than in U. S. A.

My interpretation is that it will be a copy of the original live album made at the time before being shelved.

Will go for the double cd version but not for 40 euros. I suppose it will go down shortly and @ wowhd it’s then 15 euros or less. The super deluxe is definitely something for my best friends’ collection. He recently bought elvis and pink floyd. So I know where to get the blu ray then ;-) .
As a die hard Queen fan i have pre-ordered the super deluxe boxset. I have the march show from a reel master tape but it only contains 8 tracks. The quality though is stunning.
Pre order from the US and select expediated shipping and paid taxes and it works out at £65 all in to the UK now.
A nice looking box set, vastly over-priced again of course but that is to be expected.
At least the various discs are being offered separately, which is good because I for one do not like paying for both the Bluray and DVD in these box sets when they are trying to cover all bases and charging the consumer for their indecision or lack of alternatives.
A better option would be to offer both a CD/DVD and CD/Bluray version minus the memorabilia in all territories (not just N. America) at a decent price.

I think you have to take early Amazon UK prices with a large pinch of salt. I expect the box to come down to around £65 at some point (perhaps even more). The 4LP box is even more ludicrously priced at £105. That’s surely about double what it should be? As a general rule best advice is normally to get your pre-orders in and watch to see how things develop over the next 10 weeks.
