Did anyone notice that on CD 20 (Thru The Years), track #12, which is supposed to be “Suspicions (Part 1)” is actually “Gasoline Blues”, which was released 3 years after “Thru The Years”?

What a great video. Thank you Paul. It looks like a super [deluxe] box set – so well put together. Having watched the unboxing, had to go straight to Blues from Laurel Canyon. Brilliant album with astonishing guitar from (I think) a 19 year old who did pretty well in The Rolling Stones.

I’ve read a number of posts regarding the cost of this but to possibly put it in some perspective, some years ago,I think it was Island records, released a Sandy Denny box set of 19 CDs with the usual array of associated ephemera. Initial quantities also came with an additional print. At the time £190 or thereabouts if memory serves me correctly, seemed like a lot of money – it was and still is – but you won’t pick up a second hand copy for less than about £600! Just a thought…..
I bought Sandy’s box set in spring 2020. It was in NM condition without additional print. It cost me €900 (£720)!

I’ve finally taken the plunge with this ‘monster’ after seeing your magnificent unboxing video. Although I have much of the music already (the ‘unreleased’ stuff, certainly for the Clapton era, is already out there in bootleg form), I’ve justified it to myself based on the remastering and the book content. I think this may be my single most expensive outlay for any official release in over 50 years of collecting – John Mayall – who’d have thought it?. I’m just hoping that it doesn’t get subjected to any damage in transit given it’s weightiness!

Firstly, thanks to Madfish for taking on these projects. As a community I think we take for granted the value of the boxes from an archival/preservation perspective. If not for many of these projects, there is a risk some important music would be lost to time. We should remember to be grateful to Madfish and several other labels like Esoteric, Cherry Red, Light in the Attic, Numero, Omnivore, Rubellan for their efforts. Supporting niche reissues today means more music tomorrow.
Personally, I can’t wait for a release from Madfish by an artist I love so that I can offer financial support to the cause in return for a beautiful box and music to treasure.
Secondly, and not to rehash the NY Archives Volume II debacle again but 3000 copies worldwide in November for that limited run when Madfish is pressing 5000 for John Mayall. No disrespect whatsoever intended to John Mayall, but did anyone except Reprise Records really think demand for a Neil Young box of his 1972-76 era would be 60% of that for an early era John Mayall box? Don’t mean to harp on this, but I really hope the launch of Archives Volume III is more transparent so I feel less like the mark in a fixed card game.
Great box set and yes, you might think it is expensive but compare this to Neil Young Archives Vol II. Neil´s has only 10 CDs, a far less interesting book and it is only 25 pounds cheapear. John´s box is impressive, massive and my onl regard is with the sound quality. Can anyone talk about it? HAve anyone listen to the CDs? Have you Paul?
there should of been two box sets. 65 t0 68 and 69 to 74. the live shows are audience tapes. universal should consider releasing the bbc as a seperate 2 cd set.
Sadly, these days, most SDE’s are beyond my reach.

What a well put together set! Low on trinkets, very high on printed info and musical content. I really like the die cut sleeves for the singles and also that they weren’t put in the box in vinyl form. A proper deluxe set.
When I first saw this set I was ecstatic. Love Mayall and all of his music. I have since I was 7 years old listening at my hippie sisters vinyl in early 70’s. But when I saw the large number of CD’s I was just disappointed. Yes the cost is alot but I know it would be worth it. I just really like my vinyl! So as I peruse the records I’ll watch for the few I don’t have. I love you John, but this poor farm girl in Iowa just can’t do it. I’m sure I will regret my decision but onward we go. Peace everyone and John… Loved you over 50 years and it’s still growing.✌️
I’m also only mildly interested… to me there is too much stuff smashed together, and as has been pointed out on the previous thread & the Hoffman forums, it’s not totally complete either.
I think I can probably live well with simply getting the rest of the Decca remasters from 2007.
Have always been a huge John Matall fan & have most of the albums/CDs/vinyls including some of the live sets. It’s an amazing, dedicated project getting all albums & releases into one vast package but quite pricey. Maybe grab one later on when I’ve saved up enough dosh.r
A John Mayal fan since 1970 as a young boy and have a few of these albums , some changed my life and took me on to Jazz but too pricey for me . Maybe it could be packaged in smaller numbers!!
This is a deeply impressive collection…and a fantastic video, as always! High temptation quotient until the price ($500 Canadian, not including shipping). Definitely one to wait for a good deal, somewhere down the road.
Though as it’s limited to 5000 worldwide there is always the worry that it will sell out long before any such deals are able to materialise down the line

As the name suggests this covers ‘1965 – 1974’ not ‘The indispensable edited highlights of 1969 – 1974’ so inevitably not everything will be ‘indispensable’. Even without the books etc this works out at £7.86 per CD which doesn’t exactly seem exorbitant!
A little sharp and if you divide anything it will always come out cheaper . If I can pay 7.65 in instalments over 35 cd ‘s . I’m in . Thanks
As J Douglas mentions above, these are archival/preservation projects that are meant to preserve the historical record of the work over that period – not a pick & mix of indispensable tracks that Mayall fans think are the best. In a world were a paperback book now costs over £9.99 & a hardback around £28, £275 for a 35cd set with 2 books & a signed pic still doesn’t seem exorbitant.
I thought the King Crimson boxes were the high level of box_set contents but this one is on top of all. And the dedicated picture is a must the cherry on the cake. The only weak point is the price. Under 200 euros could have decide people like me (not huge fan but british blues amateur) to buy it and have hours of music to listen to. Thank you for the présentation Paul.
If the set was under 200 euros & factoring the cost of the books etc that would price the cds themselves at about 2-3 euros each which will be why the set isn’t priced at under 200 euros. Currently each cd works out at around £4-5 each if you take out the cost of the books/posters/box etc – which doesn’t seem exorbitant.
I confess I watched the video on double speed, but that looks like a very nicely packaged set. If I were a fan, and had large quantities of excess cash burning a hole in my pocket, I’d certainly pick one up.
