So I got everything in this colour reissue set except The Kick Inside and Lionheart. According to Kate’s website, there are pressing delays for both. My order at Tower Japan has been cancelled (The Kick Inside; Lionheart is still on order). I have looked around elsewhere to find the colour editions of these two, and nobody seems to have them. Has anyone else run into this issue? The whole thing is starting to annoy me. I wouldn’t have bothered if not for my being a completist, and the ones I did get sound great. The pressings are good with virtually no surface noise. Will we see these first two, or am I stuck with an incomplete set?
I have all four of the vinyl box sets. Unfortunately they are mostly all noisy vinyl pressings. So many ticks and pops that I engage my Sugarcube processor when I listen to those albums which removes ticks and pops. I rarely have to do that with most of my records. I also had to return a couple of those box sets for replacement copies as the surface noise was so objectionable, and many of those discs had non-fill distortion (the crunchies) that was intolerable to me, and some were warped.
I’ve ordered all of these new colored vinyl releases because yes, they are beautiful, and because they were pressed by Record Industry and not by Optimal in Germany. Optimal has a worsening history of not keeping things clean during the pressing process with presents as excessive ticks and pops even though the records themselves usually look perfectly clean and shiny. They also warp a lot of their vinyl. People should care not only about how an artist’s premium product looks, but most importantly, how it sounds! Frankly, a poor quality vinyl pressing ruins any premium product.
This is tough because The Red Shoes is probably my least favorite album of hers but is the most beautiful of this collection (to my eyes). I have thus far resisted buying any vinyl I have no intention of ever playing, but damn, this one is tempting. My absolute love of Ariel has me considering it, too, if for no other reason than to hear how she broke up A Sky of Honey from one continuous piece of music for two sides of vinyl.
As you said, it’s all about the look. But I listen to music and am not a collector of new presentations unless there is new musical content or it sounds better. All I need from Kate now is for her to meet with Steven Wilson and start the journey to spatial mixes of her albums with deluxe editions of the albums with demos or even just with his-res stereo, 5.1, and Dolby Atmos mixes. Oh, and the Blu-ray of Before the Dawn.
Derek, there’s more chance of Kate flying to the moon. Yes, all that would be nice, but it’s never going to happen. If she proves me wrong, I’ll be delighted.
Well since my original post here must have gotten lost or something, I’ll try again…do I need these new coloured vinyl Kate Fish People reissues?? No, but do I WANT them?? I’m quite tempted, they do look stunning!! I have the 2 CD boxsets, so I would only buy the coloured vinyls here…all I say is thank goodness I did not buy the 4 vinyl boxsets, I would be quite upset if I did cuz these look way better!! The 2 CD boxsets are great and fine cuz #2 also includes “Before The Dawn” & that 4CD B-sides/12″s/rarities set, which were not reissued here…and being I’m in the US, I will just order the first 3 from her site or buy em at Newbury Comics…I was there today & they had “Never For Ever” which was on “Silver Bullet” vinyl, which looked cool…I like the other two as well, espesh “The Kick Inside” on a Mango colour…I may buy the others here, 1 at a time, based on how well you package for shipment…as for the HoL release, that clearly Prince-inspired colour is great, but the new art editions and boxes out Dec 1 are clearly bonkers high, and Baskerville is not even coloured just black?? Boo!! Just happy they are all not limited edition, so I can take my time with them…
The problem for me, aside from the price and that I don’t buy vinyl anymore, is the fact that two of these albums are altered from the originals – HOL and Aerial, so even if I did collect vinyl, that would spoil it for me.
They do look amazing though.
I got a copy of Siouxsie Sioux’s
reissued Mantaray on bespoke splatter vinyl this summer – each pressing of each album is totally individual. I think there were 1000 pressed.
So – are all these new coloured pressings of Kate’s catalogue exactly the same? Or are there slight variations?
I do understand some are ‘solid’ colours but what about the others?
Get a hold of as many different coloured bits of play dough as you can, roll them up into a ball and use your palm to squash them flat into discs onto the tabletop. Now make several thousand of them that each look exactly the same, you won’t be able to. Nobody could. So…Yes, there will be variations.
The albums look stunning, I would pick up some scratched buggered ones to display on the wall of my study music room!
This is great and all, but just re-releasing this on colored vinyl just seems like a money grab. Not so long ago for this price, one would expect to hear something that they had never heard before. I guess this is for the new fan that discovered Kate Bush last year, new to them. Now, releasing this on SDE series would be a different matter.
I would not call this a money grab at all…it’s for the new label distribution (Area 51??) & excuse to show off the new logo & packaging & why not some colours on the vinyl?? I’m just happy I did not buy the four 2018 vinyl boxsets, I’d have been upset cuz these look much prettier…I am happy I got the 2 CD boxsets though…as for the upcoming HoL artsets, those are priced bonkers high & the Baskerville one is not even coloured!! The 2 boxes Lost at Sea are only 1-sided vinyls, like huh??
You might as well say that all physical media is a ‘money grab’ when you can get almost every piece of music currently available for around £10 a month on a streaming service…
Great presentation of the vinyl Paul. Thank you and I look forward to receiving my copies ordered from SDE shop next week!
Thanks Dan. They’re on their way!
Just received my copies Paul and they do not disappoint. The attention to detail on these colored vinyl reissues is so satisfying. I was also very pleased to have received them so quickly! Thank you!
That was quick! Thanks Dan and please enjoy!
I’ve often wondered where Kate got this whole ‘fish people’ idea from and then this evening I was looking at the front cover of ‘Never For Ever’ and right there, riding on a dove, is clearly a ‘fish person’ (in a hooded cloak)! I’m probably very late to this party…
“Stunning” is the price, not the colour… :-(
The colour is stunning and the price is high. Both are correct.
I had decided not to buy any of these on vinyl, but after watching your Youtube video I thought “why not, they do look good” so I’ve ordered Hounds of Love from your shop.
50 words for snow is also very tempting…
Thanks Chris.
You’re not the only one, I was going to resolutely avoid these like the plague and then I watched the video…
Well HoL is the only one I ordered, I resisted so far. I don’t know if I ‘ll resist in the future. We shall see. But I know I didn’t buy the boxes years ago because I knew I would not get them in mint condition.
That waveform printed on the cover of Aerial – what sound does it represent? A sample from the album?
It’s the wave form of a blackbird singing. Quite probably the one featured on the track Aerial Tal.
I always thought it strange that an album called Aerial should feature a song about a washing machine.
Washing machines are a very underused subject in the lexicon of popular music.
Yes but is this new vinyl edition biological or non biological?
Thinking again, with all those birds flying around she might be safer using the tumble dryer than the clothes line…
I bought each of the excellent box sets for less than the price of each of these albums. These seem really overpriced for no additional content.
There’s no denying that the vinyl looks stunning but the the inconsistent approach to the labels is bonkers. The new bespoke labels look great, would it have hurt to knocked something up for The Dreaming and HOL?
Hounds of Love: The Blackcurrant Yogurt Edition?
It’s in the fridge, Its Muller…
And there’ll be two spoons on the table…
Or…
Muller light…
