  1. I got everything I wanted at Bristol Rough Trade, despite arriving at 1pm. No queue, all done in 15 minutes. No more early starts for me.

Interestingly, on arrival at 1:30pm in 2023, the queue outside RT was still 50+ strong. Perhaps a sign of declining interest with the silly prices?

  2. Shopped on line yesterday evening. The on-line seems to have reduced the eBayers. Similar to last year. Overall RSD vinyl price is a bit of a joke.
Purchased 3 vinyls I wanted and they came to £125 including postage
Generally didn’t think the RSD offerings were great this year.
Interesting that lots of RSD regulars such as the Charlatans didn’t have albums this time round. Others such as Durruti came up with the same album within a small window

The least I have spent and didn’t miss going in-store

  3. My enthusiasm for RSD is at an all time low. I think there are too many releases and many are overpriced. Don’t like to be negative but RSD has lost much of its allure in my opinion.

  4. Our tiny record shop here in Miami, Yesterday & Today, had decent stock when I went in the afternoon. I had the Ian Hunter in my hands, it was the last copy, but decided to put it back. An older gentleman right behind me in the line immediately picked it up. We chatted while we were in line and apparently he’s a huge MtH fan and really wanted the record – was happy that it went to someone who really, really wanted it.

Picked up The Other Two EP, EBTG, and The Who compilation for nostalgic reasons, in memory of my brother, as they were his favorite band and he never got a copy of the original since it was an import.

Had the John Lennon “Mind Games” glow in the dark EP in my hands too, but at $38 seemed like a bridge too far cost wise. I echo everyone here who wishes the noble CD got a little more RSD love.

  5. Banquet records has so much stuff online. Just got Queen Cool Cat and they still had 20+ left (along with lots of stuff sold out elsewhere). I am not sure how this tiny shop in Kingston always seems to get a significant share of the UK RSD allocation :)

  6. Has anyone started slabbing their records yet? Saw it on you tube! This is the new trend where people put their records in plastic covers like valuable baseball cards/ comics ect!!

    1. Haven’t people been doing that for like years? I mean not me personally I always found them a bit annoying but you see photos of people’s record collections and it just looks like loads of plastic covers on a shelf.

  7. I did my shopping online while walking the dog: Oh Wonder double vinyl from Denmark, Propaganda 1000 Eyes of Dr. Mabuse from Portugal (both were not part of USA RSD). Steven Wilson Remix, Linda Ronstadt Asylum Years Vinyl Box Set and Nancy Sinatra How does that grab you from sellers in the US. No need to stand in line. No I am playing the Waiting Game….

    1. I stopped waiting in line when I was able to get the Taylor Swift Long Pond Sessions online. After that, I just wait. Seems like months after RSD, retailers start offering them for 40%-50% off. This year I got the Olivia Rodrigo, but I wasn’t quick enough to get the South Park.

  8. Noticed that the Ultravox SW mixes EP states that two tracks are previously unreleased i.e. two tracks were released previously. Does this mean that the Lament SDE was supposed to be released before this record? Maybe it’s getting an Atmos mix belatedly added (and presumably an upgrade from DVD to Blu-ray)?

    1. Here’s an official explanation from Dermot James from Chrysalis Records as to why this release came out before the box set:

I had a rough target date in my head to try and meet a 5th April release date, which would be as near as 40 years since the original release of 6th April. Timing with manufacturing is tricky towards the end of a year and the beginning of the next, competing with all labels manufacturing for Christmas and April’s RSD stock. The slipcases for the two box sets were made back in November and the remainder coming earlier this year.

The printing on one of the booklets wasn’t great, so I took the decision to forget about an April release date and get it reprinted and looking right. By this stage, the RSD 12”s were made and on their way to North America, Australia and Europe and the release was too late to be pulled from the event. Hence some details on the labels being slightly off with ‘previously unreleased’ listed on two of the four tracks. No major crime though?

The box will come this year, but out of respect to Chris’ family and friends, I thought best to pause on it for now.

  9. Bristol Rough Trade lots of stock of many titles still on Sunday, I picked up very nicely packaged Fields of The Nephilim , Bowie and Olivia Rodrigo single cos my daughter was with me lol. Lots of the Kate Bush there for those here that I know are fans. Have fun

  10. I popped into Banquet Records in Kingston this morning, well stocked , just Blur missing for me, I went for the Doors Stockholm triple, I was very pleased they had a cd copy which saved me a few quid, & I got the Bowie, I found the prices a bit out of my range as others have said, luckily I live close by but frustrating if you have to rely on eBay

      1. I knew that in advance from watching the 4 advance RSD unboxing videos from this fantastic huge PA store called Spin Me Round…that store got over 3000 copies of RSD titles, yikes!! What did not sell yesterday went up on their site this morning…and saw on their video of what was left & they had a TON of those Doors CDs…I may buy some stuff this week of what was left…

        1. I was able to get the Doors Stockholm CD on their own official web site. I bought the Bakersfield CD from the Black Friday 2023 RSD from their site as well, last November. But they do sell out quickly, so if anyone is thinking about this, act fast.

    1. I got the Bowie too…bummer that it’s black vinyl, not coloured, splattered or picdisc Zoetrope…I’m always a bit let down if it’s black…it’s why I turned down the Siouxsie…said on a rear sticker that it’s black vinyl…

    2. Banquet was doing a roaring trade today. got the Propaganda minialbum which was the ONLY thing I really wanted this year. Also got the instrumental Bauhaus Staircase which I already have on Digital Download, but it’s not on vinyl, so had to get it. Apart from that I found this year’s list to be a bit ho hum.

  11. Nice RSD! Nice to see the age of participants markedly drop in the last few years. Must be the Taylor Swift effect. Managed to find my desired items (Pulp, Keane, Lost in Translation) but was shocked by some of the prices. €28 for a Morrissey 12”. Really?

    1. Well the new Taylor Swift came out Friday and many different versions & variants…expensive for many… those people prob all bought just the Olivia Rodrigo & Noah Kahan…and maybe Paramore, but saw tons of those…

  12. I was late (around 10.00 am) because of the bad weather, but had a 100% score at my shop: Ultravox, Midge Ure, Propaganda (though I was in doubt because of the steep price), Steven Wilson and Prefab Sprout. There was a time that there was a code for a digital download included with most vinyl, but I have not seen any this year. Unfortunately.

    1. That used to be the one redeeming (no pun intended) feature of buying vinyl. Sure it was nice to play them on the record player, but you know, we’ve moved on a bit, so it was also nice to just be able to download them and put them on my laptop/phone/etc. But those days seem to be long gone. Another reason for not buying it. Although DM still put them in their 12″ collection box sets. Phew! Maybe there are some others but it is a rarity these days. Maybe they just expect everyone to stream the stuff…or have to pay again for a CD/Download :|

      1. I read somewhere that even thoug people want there to be a download card, very few actually bother to download. Maybe because of streaming? THis made it not really worth the expense of nmaintaining a download facility and support for indefinite time.

      1. Hope you got what you wanted. I agonised all morning over whether to go back in for the Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous, (£47 is not cheap for a double album) then thought what the hell and got that too!

    1. I don’t think that’s correct. iMusic had all the RSD titles listed on their website ready to order but you couldn’t order them until RSD was finished. I got an email from them Sunday morning 8.00am AWST stating titles are now available to order (which would have been midnight Saturday Denmark time). Remember the time difference.

      1. Disgraceful was meant tongue-in-cheek, as I thought nothing was meant to be available to buy online till 8pm on Monday! Unless that’s only in the UK?
I too got the email on Sunday morning, and was surprised to be able to place an order there and then for Mike Oldfield and Thin Lizzy later in the day.
The Mike Oldfield disc has already been dispatched so I’m well pleased with iMusic!
The only downside being if there’s a problem, I have to return it to Denmark at my own expense!!!

  13. One thing I wish my record store of choice (Bending Sound, Bangor, Co. Down) would do, is to take lists from the first, say, 20 people in the queue, and have them waiting at the checkout. There’s nothing worse than to have your eye on something special, only for someone behind you in the queue, to push past you and pick the last copy up. Grrrr!

I was there at 4.30am this year (the earliest I’ve ever been is 3am), and already quite a few people in front of me. And by the 8am opening, there was a huge queue. The biggest I’ve seen in all my years taking part (this was my 9th year).

There’s always a happy mood among the early arrives, which tend to be mostly the same people every year. The store owners provided tea and coffee, with biccies and Tunnick’s Teacakes, this year. Which was nice.

I’m already looking forward to Black Friday.

    1. Windows in Newcastle do exactly what you’re asking for. They hand out the list of releases to people in the queue an hour ahead of opening, and then they are ready to collect and pay for, to speed the whole process up. The bacon roll, hot drink and competition they do is highly appreciated. All in all it makes it a worthwhile event to partake in.

Even though I’d seen a video of the printing of the Kate Bush 10″ single, I’d not appreciated that it wasn’t a regular picture disc, and it is cool to have a white vinyl on one side and the printed image on the other.

      1. Windows of Newcastle – the place where Mark Knopfler bought his first guitars – has always been my go-to venue as a Geordie and it has always done a good job of the coffee and sarnies. However, they messed up this year and a lot of people were going away disillusioned, me included. I queued from 6.30ish (in the first couple of dozen of the queue) for Bill Evans, Anne Briggs, Blur, Kirsty MacColl, Alex Chilton, and Television, and they only had the last of these. Went round the corner to the excellent RPM Records and they had all of the other five a few hours later.

As one or two others are suggesting, the price of some double vinyl albums has become silly in recent times and unless the demand is high (like Taylor Swift’s Folklore re-recording for the 2023 RSD, now fetching £300-400), they’ll be going unsold and then discounted. For example, the 2LP special edition of The Proclaimer’s Sunshine on Leith – excellent as it was – was never going to sell for its RRP of around £50 and it can now be had easily for quite a bit less.

        1. Windows seems like a cool store…I’m from NY & never been to the northeast of England but love many Geordie artists…besides Mark Knopfler & Brian Johnson, love the Wildhearts, Ginger’s daughter Jazmin Bean & um, Cheryl from Girls Aloud…if ever I get to Geordie-land, I’ll check out Windows…

  14. Although prices this year are scandalous, I picked up quite a few titles. The most prolific among them are Thin Lizzy, Bowie, Rocky Horror Show, Joe Strummer, Queen, Sparks & Noël, Ultravox, Fun Boy 3, and Kate Bush. I passed on The Who, as £55 for a double lp is, quite simply, taking the p*ss.

  15. I must say this was the best RSD in a long while…a couple of wants I did not get…the Dwight Yoakam CD box (neither store I went to got it in) & that Kim Wilde, Newbury Comics wanted $53US…er no…I wonder if those mixes are in either KW’s RAK CD box or “Pop Don’t Stop” boxset?? Also that Lordi, Mr Cheapo’s wanted like $55US for it, nope too high…Anyhoo, I snagged 7 titles for just over $300, not as bad as I thought…all at Mr Cheapo’s in Mineola…I may get that Mark Knopfler if those songs are in the expensive boxset as that piece is expensive, and they are not on the SDE BluRay… anyhoo, what I snagged were the Bowie, Elton, Dead or Alive, Ramones, Golden Earring, and 2 titles not on my essentials list but read cool things & looked too good to pass up…the Parliament & Sparks/Noel…also got the Target Taylor Swift TTPD clear vinyl… others I passed up today but want later were the Blur, Sisters of Mercy, Bebe Rexha, Tinted Windows, Def Leppard, More Dazed & Confused, 4 Seasons, Sonic Youth, don’t want the Siouxsie cuz black vinyl not coloured, the Cure picdisc, want the Fleetwood Mac Rumours picdisc but didn’t see it, Keane, HIM, Neil/Horse cuz ton of copies left…it was a good day & able to budget myself accordingly…

  16. First time I’ve managed to visit an actual bricks and mortar record store in the UK. I had planned to get there for opening time, but after a hard week at work, I slept in. Got to the shop mid morning and nothing in of interest, no copies of the Yes album left, absolutely all of his copies of Kate Bush gone, so went to the shop across the road. Picked up their last copy of Yes, Hawkwind Live 79 and London Grammar remixes, (a somewhat lame attempt at appeasing my wife!). They too had sold out of Kate Bush singles. Now, as that 10″ was on sale for around £20/£25, copies are now on ebay for anything from £35 to £200+! As it’s not new music on this disc, I’m not too bothered. If a copy come up at a sensible price, I may purchase it, but some people are greedy and some are stupid, (actually paying these silly prices). I was tempted by the Talking Heads and forgot to look for the Mike Oldfield, but again, I’m not to bothered. I spent more than enough so that’ll do. On the plus side, they do play well, with no major pressing issues so that’s a bonus! Those few who were in the shops were pretty much of the same opinion, that rsd isn’t about celebrating the physical shops, but who gains the most profit from the releases!

  17. Here in my part of the States, wasnt too much of an ordeal…..was about #25 in line….got what I wanted the Bowie “Waiting In the Sky” and the Siouxsie and the Banshees Nocturne 40th remaster….luckily a lot of people in line were there for the Olivia Rodrigo and Noah Kahan releases…..

  18. Here in Dallas, TX I luckily managed to avoid getting soaked by a heavy rain/thunderstorm right before getting into Josey Records. They had an excellent RSD inventory (including a handful of RSD UK titles) and attracted a massive crowd. I picked up the Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds’ 7″, the Everything but the Girl e.p., the Death Cab for Cutie LP, and the Keane LP. I passed on Bowie, Ultravox, Chris Isaak, and the Talking Heads.

I had my hopes up for the OMD Bauhaus Staircase instrumentals LP and the Propaganda 12″ when I heard that Josey had some UK titles, but didn’t see those when I was browing through the bins.

It was good to see a few RSD CD releases and I’d cast a vote for more of those in the future.

    1. I saw all those, and I’m in Long Island, NY, even both of the OMDs, the Steven Wilson & ton of copies of the Kate Bush for the ridiculous price of $33US…for a 3-track picdisc 10″?? Get outta here!!

  19. Thanks for another really helpful video Paul. Ended up in a store in Harrogate called P&C Music which is new to me as we are away. Lovely chap, Peter running it. He said the mark up for his store is 10% or less to make the prices palatable and there is a lot of up front cost to get the stock then the risk of being left with the less popular items that don’t sell. A lot of people show interest in advance then don’t show up on the day. Happily came away with Ultravox, Keane and London Grammar releases. Do agree with the pre-order point. I think it would help the record stores too. Glad it exists, always something interesting.

  20. looking to pick a few things up tomorrow before everything goes online Monday night. Last year’s “day after” netted me everything I wanted. However, there’s barely anything of interest this year :(

  21. This is the first time in years that I haven’t participated in RSD. Instead I’ve treated myself to the half speed master of ABBA’s Ring Ring in the great 50% off HMV sale. A bargain at £22, plus free in-store collection.

  22. I managed to get The Story of The Who and Replacements here in Chicago. Missed out on the Faces/BBC Live however. I did see someone ahead of me in line with it.

      1. I gave the Story of the Who records a spin. The sound is very good for vinyl (I admit I prefer CD’s). The packaging is nice as well.

      1. I have the Tim 2008 Expanded Edition Rhino CD from 2008, so I really was not motivated to get that box last year. However I think 1984-1986 is the high point era for the Mats, so when I saw this release for RSD for a show from the legendary Cabaret Metro in my hometown of Chicago, I could not pass it up. I was lucky to get it as several people in line in front of me grabbed a copy. I got the second to last one.

  23. I’ve just looked at the Zappa RSD 1 1/2 x LPs on eBay (£40) which states “more than 10 available”. This from a non-bricks and mortar seller… How does this happen? Bah!

  24. Really hoped to get the Ultravox 12″ but I’ve been waiting in for a boiler engineer all morning. The effing thing is only a week old. Grrr!

        1. That is very kind, I don’t really know what to say. I suppose I should pop back to the shop tomorrow morning just in case they kept any back for the second wave first, though.

Can I ask why you’d not want to keep it for yourself? And how much you want for it? And another and, are you in the UK?

          1. Hi Simon,

Your desire to want it sounds greater than my need to keep it.
There’s no cost, and yes I’m in the UK.

I bought six records yesterday. Kate Bush got me out of bed early and I love anything Field Music do. I bought the Steven Wilson remixes album and that was part of the motivation in buying the Ultravox 12″. I was delighted to get Mark Knopfler’s 4 track 12″ – his new album is really enjoyable. I love Prefab Sprout, but when I bought it (a tick on a list) it was the one item that I didn’t need to spend £20 on.

            Regards,

          2. I didn’t realise I sounded that desperate. :-D

I did pop back to the record shop this morning right when they opened. No one in there except me and no restocks. Trouble with living in rural Wiltshire, not many record shops. Not even any in my two nearest cities either…

          3. Quante, that is very generous of you. With all the issues going on in the world, it’s nice to see people being considerate and helping others out.

  25. At those prices again, no way Jose! I’ll do what I always do, wait it out and get the ones I want in about 6 months time, and cheaper..

    1. Asking for a friend…how do you know for the ones that you want that a) there will be copies available and b) that they will be cheaper in 6 months time..?

  26. Oceansize are ace…I highly recommend their third album, “Frames.” Wish that would get an RSD release since vinyl copies are expensive and hard to come by. Dramatic, emotional music with a bit of a prog leaning and lots of twists and turns.

  27. On those tri-fold LPs: I fold the first or third panel all the way back to get the middle LP out. More wear on the spine but at least you are less likely to rip the sleeve.

  28. I’ll be looking for Grateful Dead, Jerry Garcia Band, the Doors, and Enslaved – “Vikingligr Veldi.” Which one does not fit with the others? I do love Enslaved, though.

  29. A bit underwhelmed by RSD this year. Of course, having said that, I’ll still be up and out early to buy the Steven Wilson, Young Fathers, English Teacher, Bowie and the Stones.

But it’s a 7″ single I’m looking forward to the most. Jane Weaver is releasing two outtakes from the sessions of her new John Parish produced album. The LP is fantastic and I’m sure the 7″ will be too.

  30. I think there’s more albums appearing on the list every year that can be bought already! (I can pick up Ian Hunter on CD for an awful lot less). Only something unusual will appeal tomorrow and that includes Steven Wilson, Mark Knopfler and Public Service Broadcasting. But having said all that there could be a few tempters like Thin Lizzy and Black Sabbath. Prices as usual will dictate what I can get away with!

  31. The only thing on my list is the Queen single, but frankly it brasses me off that in order to have half a chance of getting it, I have to be at my local store before 6am as I learned a long time ago that if I’m not in the first 10 in the queue, there’s little chance of getting what little I want.
The first two people in the queue EVERY year, turn up around 10am the night before and the shop always allows them to buy one copy of EVERYTHING. Hmmmm. Making a mint on Ebay I suspect.
And that’s my gripe. RSD has become little more than a money making opportunity (and who can blame folks I suppose) and too many folks are faced with extortionate prices on ebay.

Frankly it’s time we did what other countries did and allowed pre-orders instead of all this queuing in all weathers nonsense.
Or just press more damn copies.

One thing for sure tomorrow is that unlike the title of the Queen single, I’m not likely to be a “cool cat”…

  32. Alas, no Miles, but equally welcome, Sonny Rollins, ‘Freedom Weaver: The 1959 European Tour Recording’, a 4 lp set with the usual phenomenal book that Resonance issues with such editions.

  33. There are some interesting releases, here and there : Ramones demos, Captain Beefheart’s Deluxe Spotlight kid, Neil Young’s F###in’ UP, Yusef Lateef, etc.

  34. I had quite a long list until I saw the prices of a lot of them – like the Garbage EP I liked and the Fat Boy Slim EP, and then the list got shorter very quickly.
    I think now it’s the U2 10″ and the Josh Wink 12″

  35. Looking through the list previously I didn’t see anything I wanted (or don’t have already). The only thing was the Ultravox one, but that’s simply because it has 2 mixes on it that won’t be on the forthcoming box set apparently. Which I find a bit annoying TBH. There’s always plenty of space left on those discs!
I was just yesterday contemplating the U2 one since I’ve been picking up all the previous RSD issues relating to past singles. Most of which have been quite nice, apart from the Fire picture disc which was utter s**t! So I might pick that up, but I was kind of expecting an Unforgettable Fire related single, mmm Pride maybe?? Atomic City doesn’t quite give me goosebumps :)
Given that those two are about the cheapest on offer, but will still cost £30 between them for a handful of songs is it really worth it?
Your unboxing video really makes the case for how nice vinyl can look and that’s the big draw, but not wanting to sound like a broken record (ha ha), the prices just kill it for me.

  36. I have a much shorter list than usual this year, but the Ramones and Talking Heads are definitely on it.

Was hoping to see what the zoetrope George Harrison discs look like spinning on a turntable in this video – maybe next time!

Would it have killed U2 to put both “Atomic City” remixes on this release? The David Guetta one, predictable-sounding as it is, is definitely the better of the two, and they’re both short enough to fit on one side of a 10”. Ah well.

    1. I’m in the US. The store I went to didn’t get any of the Orb record, so I’m going to have to find another source for that. Also noticed that there are an unusually high number of UK-only RSD releases (English Teacher, FSOL and Kristin Hersh “Clear Pond Road Sessions”) that I want this year, so I skipped a couple of things I was on the fence about (Byrne/Paramore split, Donna Summer, Gorillaz) to save money, because the UK releases are going to cost me dearly, if I can even find them. Otherwise successful – looking forward to spinning that Ramones record later today!

Hope everyone else got what they wanted!

      1. Got a good portion plus 2 I did not expect to buy but did…surprises like that are usually par for the course…the rest I will acquire over time & look at pricedrops…it was a really good RSD if you ask me…another I had my eye on but didn’t buy cuz of too high price was the Gorillaz…like $55US…but I may get the Wilco box cuz price not that bad really, saw it for $79…

  37. My (very) short list this time:

    1. DAVID BOWIE – Waiting in the Sky (Before The Starman Came To Earth)

    2. MARK KNOPFLER – The Boy EP

    3. ENNIO MORRICONE – Storie di Vita e Malavita (Colonna Sonora Originale Del Film)

    4. TALKING HEADS – Live at WCOZ 77

I might end buying more but those are musts for me.

  38. Darn it. I was hoping you were gonna show us Midge Ure’s “The Gift (Early Versions)” so I could find out which song is the track that’s exclusive to the RSD release. If anyone knows, feel free to add in comments.

    1. This is the track listing of the album if that helps at all

      1. If I was (Early Version)
      2. When The Wind Blows (Early Version)
      3. Living In The Past (Early Version)
      4. That Certain Smile (Instrumental – Early Version)
      5. The Gift (Early Version)
      6. Wastelands(Early Version Two)
      7. Edo (Early Version)
      8. The Chieftan (Early Version)
      9. She Cried (Instrumental – Early Version)
      10. Call Of The Wild (Early Version)
      1. Ah, so it’s “Call of the Wild.” That’s devastating since it’s one of my all time favorite MU songs. But I already own every other song on this RSD vinyl because they are on the deluxe CD of “The Gift” that came out last year, so I can’t imagine paying all that money just to get one song on a format that I don’t prefer. Damn.

        1. This annoys me as well. RSD releases seem to predominantly be reissues of pre-released music on variant formats: picture disc, colored vinyl, die-cut sleeve, whatever. At least in Ure’s case (the very least) you get an additional track.

And good luck if you’re like Sam and trying to find out what the extra track is. I did a couple of searches, and couldn’t find a tracklisting anywhere for this issue. It’s not even listed on the RSD site. At least I did find confirmation that this is pressed on “Eco-Jazz Recycled Vinyl,” whatever that is.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say this again, and in case any powers that be are reading, I’ll highlight this in bold: I collect music, not records.

  39. I’ve got two each by the Yardbirds and the Hives on my radar, plus Blur and Pulp.

Wow, it wasn’t that long ago I could snag eight records for under $200CDN on RSD. This lot is approaching $300 for two less. Bloody inflation!

    1. I think if you apply the official rate of inflation you will find the increase comes nowhere near $300. It’s greed pure and simple.
I’ve been guilty in the past of being a completist for my favourite artists but there are so many variants of most new releases nowadays (easily costs £250 in many cases to get them all) that I’m picking and choosing which variant(s) to get. Not like the old days when it was one CD and one LP only for each new release. And unlike the past when a new LP or CD was released they would all be roughly the same price, there is such a huge variation in new prices nowadays. Some retail for more than £10 than others. On the same label so it can’t be production costs – it’s pure greed to see what they get away with with certain artists. I’ve mentioned it before but RSD has been the catalyst for those price increases. Record companies have noticed they can get away with massive price increases. People will pay them for RSD releases and now “normal” releases.
When I studied economics one of the rules of economies of scale was that it brought production costs down as production increased. As vinyl production increases the prices being charged are going up and up.

  40. This is my short list for this year but I’m sure I’ll be getting more titles :
100 Gecs, Snake Eyes 10 » – 59€ (insanely expensive but my son is a super fan)
Blue Aeroplanes, Beatsongs LP – 41€
    Celeste, Every Day 7inch – 18€
Chris Isaak, Beyond the Sun 2LP – 45€ (sold that one a few years ago for a lot more than that)
David Bowie, Waiting in the Sky LP – 29€
Dolores O’Riordan, Are you Listening? LP – 33€

  41. Hi Paul
Steven Wilson Harmonic Divergence is on my list and i’ll try to get it tomorrow ! Thank you for this presentation , the UK list is bigger and wider than the french one .

  42. When I took a look at the RSD release sheets some weeks ago there did not seem to be anything of great interest. This video shows how wrong I was! I’ll take the Faces and Mike Oldfield. Can’t get out tomorrow due to a lunch date, but hopefully there will be some stuff left over….

  43. Still waiting for CD Store Day. About time there was some love for the old black sheep of the family. You know the shiny disk you can spread jam on

    1. Apart from Tomorrow’s World presenters has anyone ever actually done this?
Unless you want to ruin your CD player you’d have to clean it off before playing the disc anyway.

I’m quite happy for CDs not to have a special day. Massive price rises and ever more reissues.
I’m hoping to get a couple of records tomorrow or Sunday, but they are only reissues of stuff I already have.

      1. Yeah, they’d start releasing etched CDs… Vinyl Collectors Day is a more appropriate name. There is one CD release tomorrow I’m interested in.

    2. I agree, if this whole thing is to tempt me into a record store, it ain’t happening. Love the video because I have no desire to purchase vinyl*
*I have just treated myself to The Duran Duran Medazzaland Neon Pink set which, on Amazon, was £12. I bought it as a work of art rather than to play!

      1. I bought that at a bargain price for the same reason. I own the Japanese CD version, but loved the look of that (bargain) LP. I do however own a record player, so I’ll play it once at least – then go back to the CD.

    3. I’d be happy if CD versions were released for those of us who, for better or worse, have moved on from vinyl.

The only item that catches my eye this year is a 12″ of “Steven Wilson Extended Remixes” of four tracks from Ultravox’s Lament, two of which will not appear on the forthcoming deluxe edition. Why not a CD single variant? I’d buy that in a minute.

      1. Same for me. I’d even go for digital downloads. I don’t do vinyl (not since 1983) and at my age am not going to start. The only RSD purchases I’ve made have been the Steven Wilson Ultravox instrumental CD sets and those have been after RSD and on-line. Last year I actually went to a local store to find the Quartet 2CD, but they only had vinyl.

        1. Same here. The Ultravox instrumentals and Crowded House’s Intriguer: Start to Finish are the only RSD buys I’ve made, and never on the day.

      2. Just to echo the feelings here, I’ve money in my pocket, ready and willing to spend it in independent music stores, but because I prefer to listen to my music digitally I am excluded from this event.

      3. For better or for worse, I suspect the answer to that is that they can’t charge enough mark-up on a CD single for many shops to be interested. Indeed there’s a significant proportion of independent shops that don’t sell CDs at all, or only secondhand ones.

Of course, a lot of what comes out on vinyl for RSD is music already widely available on CD (or trailers for forthcoming releases etc) so most of the CDs you do see are boxed sets or live albums.

Meanwhile, PiL seem to have released some cassettes.

  44. I don’t suppose it would float your boat, Paul, but the most exciting release for me is Topic’s (eponymous) Anne Briggs 1971 LP, newly mastered from original tapes (though it will never be an audio buff experience), with a companion EP of four newly discovered songs from the session. That’s the big deal – ‘new’ old from Anne Briggs is a very rare commodity. Annoyingly, a new vinyl store near where I live was turned down for RSD – not enough months trading apparently. I suppose I’ll pick it up after the day somewhere…

  45. I’ve given up on RSD these days. Not many tempting items and if I waver I just have to look at the ridiculous prices to make my mind up. The Morrissey/Siouxsie gold vinyl 12 inch is £28 on Rough Trade. £28 for a 12 inch single? Forget it. I’ll stick with my original from 30 years ago which cost me £2.99. By the way Paul do you that the Doors triple live LP you featured is £75 on Rough Trade!
The original point of RSD was to get people into record shops and to encourage them to make more purchases. Some stores don’t even let you browse as they keep stock behind the counter. You complete a form and tick the releases you want and if they have any left dig them out for you. Kind of defeats the object doesn’t it? Might as well be all mail order, which of course they can’t do for another 2 days. Utter nonsense.

    1. I have to agree, RSD does seem to be getting away from it’s roots. Yes, some stores are not having open browsing, some pre-order before the day, so queuing is pointless. The price for individual items is getting very expensive. I appreciate they are rare and will hold and increase value. Times are hard for many and it is becoming a jolly day out for those with cash or scalpers, rather than attracting the community into it’s decreasing record stores. So, i do have mixed views about RSD now. It’s not just RSD, many vinyl issues are made in many differing versions to maximize sales, i appreciate it’s a business like everything else, but RSD is becoming increasingly out of reach for many music fans.

    2. I’m more annoyed by the record store doing the check list thing than with the high prices. Browsing is the main reason for me to go to a record shop rather than ordering online so no point for me of ordering from a list.

Also the prices are so random. 16 for the Ultravox 12 inch is not that bad. But it will probably be 40 for a sisters of mercy 12 inch again.

    3. I can understand why the stores do this though when you’ve got a large number of people stood outside waiting in the (usually crappy) April weather for hours. Get em in, take their money, get em out. But yeah it’s probably not what the original essence of the day was supposed to be about and all rather faceless…bit like shopping online really :)

    4. Couldn’t agree more! The last time I went to an RSD, maybe 5 years ago, in Newcastle, the record shops there kept all the items behind the desk. Like ordering in Argos!! The original idea behind RSD has long since been lost.

  46. Kind of annoying how the Keane live at the Paradiso is deliberately omitted from the cd expanded edition of Hopes and Fears soon to be released. Labels are cynically always doing this i.e. holding back material fans might want from their expanded deluxe editions so that fans never get the proper definitive all included expanded edition that they usually seek to own.

      1. If you ask the same question over and over again, maybe the answer will change.
Which is like the man who bet on the chariot race in the Ben Hur film, always on the one that lost a wheel, in the belief that the odds would mean that sooner or later it was bound to win…

  47. Perfect timing for RSD, HMV have a 50% sale on some of their items using the code DEAL50. Plenty of vinyl on sale plus
Nirvana in Utero 30th Box Set £90 and various Rolling Stones SHM-CD’s.

    1. They have a decent selection in their 3 for £55 collection as well. As for RSD i echo what others have said prices have shot up and it certainly appears there are some cynical tactics employed for the labels holding back content for limited release, so its out of reach for me this year anyway sadly.
