SDE’s 2021 Record Store Day video preview #1

Record Store Day returns on Saturday 12 June, which is one of two ‘drop days’ this year (down from three in 2020). The second date is 17 July.

Keeping with tradition, SDE is pleased to present a series of video previews this week of selected items. Today we focus on albums/artists from the 1960s and 1970s including Joni Mitchell, The Doors, Grateful Dead and more.

Remember the rules are relaxed again this year, so if you can’t make it to your local record shop (if you have one!) then online orders are permitted from 6pm on the day. Good luck and let’s here what your most desired items are – leave a comment!

  1. Managed to get both Steely Dan albums from Vinyl Tap in Huddersfield, well happy to get both of these as i’m a big fan of The Dan and saw them on the Everything Must Go Tour over in the USA. Very happy to have both of these as both were going for £100’s of ££ on the original incredibly limited German Pressings.

  3. The Sabbath Master Of Reality is listed as Drop 2 (July 17th) on the RSD site – at least for the UK. This doesn’t seem to be available in the US as they have Drop 1 picture discs of Mob Rules and Heaven and Hell instead.

  4. On a similar vein, HMV have announced exclusive vinyl for their 100 year anniversary July 24th. All seem to be limited press coloured vinyl. First come first served

  5. Really happy with the titles this year. Hope to pick up Prince, Elton John, Tears For Fears, The Police two live sets, Rage Against The Machine and more more more I want. Don’t judge but I saw an unboxing video of the Lady Gaga album and it looks fantastic – this is how a RSD release should be done.

  6. It’ ll be Tears for Fears Live at Massey Hall and Elton John’ s Sgt. Zippo for me… If I manage to get them.

    Underwhelming list indeed, but makes little difference for me actually with respect to all RSDs: in Italy we almost never get any copies of the good stuff, and if some do arrive they cost double the outrageous prices that are asked in pounds… (Just confront Paul’ s Amazon comparison price lists here on the site…)
    My only possibility, come to think of it, is if anybody is interested in a specific Italian release and cannot find it I may try to look for it and am willing to exchange it for Love Spit Love’ s “Trysome Eatone” LP (!)

  7. Of special interest to me is the Hawkwind’s Greasy Truckers party reissue on vinyl. And in the USA only (sigh), a special edition of the complete recorded output of cult hardcore band Neon Christ.

  8. Not an RSD release but a limited edition (250 copies) of Ennio Morricone & Bruno Nicolai Dimensioni Sonore Deluxe Box Set – 10LP Red vinyl, 10CD, Book, Poster -has just been announced. It looks incredible. Available now from Soundohm (€250).

  9. So I haven’t bothered with Vinyl in 35 years, but I actually exclaimed “Wow!” when I saw the etching on the Dead Paris LP. I’ve never seen a vinyl etching before. It seems pretty cool, but I could see where record companies could be extending the number of LPs in a set with some etching to drive the price point higher.

I’ll be looking for the Mansun EP reissue, Suede – Love and Poison, The Jaded Hearts live LP, Jasper Mall soundtrack, Mogwai’s ZeroZeroZero soundtrack and the Matt Bellamy solo compilation (I believe that’s in the July drop though…). I do look forward to RSD, on the Isle of Man we have a great guy called Jack who runs Sound Records and is always up for a natter on what interests you.

  12. I was really interested in the Sabbath Master of Reality but the price is scandalous. Over £40 for a single album?
    I can buy an original 70s copy for less.
    Over £15 for a 7″ single is too much.
    The prices are all over the place for stuff. Some double Lps around £30, others well over £50. Makes no sense.
    Record companies really milking the prices.

      1. I thought the same, £22 on my local store’s site. Previous year’s have been around £15/16. Everything seems way more expensive this year!

    2. Rsd releases are pressed specifically for that day. They are limited runs 500/700/1000 etc. So, that makes them more expensive to produce. The fancier the product the more costly it will be to produce it.
      As a consumer,you have have to ask yourself, if it’s worth it to you (you’re buying it after all).
      Being the owner of a rare record or a one that still for sale on shelves for £20 or £10 in repeated promotional sales.
      Rsd is all about getting people into and supporting their local store. So the releases aimed at doing so, are not your bog standard items. So neither is some of the pricing, I’m afraid.

      1. I get the point of RSD, although wouldn’t it be better to release these items over the year in larger quantities, rather than just everyone converging on a single frenzied day? Do stores really just want loads of customers (some getting upset) on one day of the year, rather than a regular trickle of customers throughout the year? Just a question…I’m not a store/shop

  13. Thanks Paul I always enjoy your unboxing videos. With regard to Steely Dan’s Two Against Nature, you might be interested to know that I’ve had a copy on vinyl for a number of years. I’m certain it’s one of a handful of official copies which got out at the time, although the late great Walt Becker was adamant they never existed. Anyway I was happy to pay £149 for my copy which sounds and plays like a dream on my Linn Axis and will be hoping to get my hands on new copies of both SD re-releases on Saturday from my local store David’s, Letchworth.

      1. Paul, I have copies of both Two Against Nature and Everything Must Go on vinyl – I bought them both when they respoectively came out, from Diverse Vinyl, IIRC. I think they were about £12 each. Two fetches daft money these days. The Two is a single LP. They both sound splendid (on a Linn LP12 anyway).

        The new RSD pressings were cut by Chris Bellman and are said to sound very good.

      2. The Two Against Nature vinyl from 2000 is a pirate pressing, but somehow got into the legitimate supply chain (not unusual). The cheap packaging and lack of proper credits is the giveaway, plus putting an hour of music on a single disc to boot. Scott Hull has confirmed that his vinyl master hasn’t been used prior to this upcoming issue, so it’s basically a CD pressed into vinyl.

  14. Re: Steely Dan options post-RSD. I’m hoping for a complete vinyl collection a la Fagen’s ‘Cheap Xmas’ from a few years ago. That was a superbly mastered and pressed set of records. That would be one way of selling those two albums twice-over…..

This year does feel a bit underwhelming compared to previous years …my wish list struggled to make 10 items ..normally it’s 20plus ..the Sabbath Master of Reality looks good, Suede and Bernard Butler are solid …and U2 win the most unimaginative release award ..one of their worst singles rereleased as an awful looking picture disc
