Queued up at my local music store (Seattle, WA) around 7:45am (~50th in line), they passed out lists to mark what you want, collected them around 7:55am and processed the orders. I was able to sit in my car until they called my cell around 9:10am to say my order was ready. Went in and paid. Was able to get everything from my list. The manager said they were starting to sell out of items from peoples lists at that time. Like this process much better than the pre-COVID free-for-all. Much less stress and seems fairer to those that queue up sooner. Picked up the Dee Gees, Sisters of Mercy (only $23 USD vs what I am seeing in the comments below), Ramones, Sinead O’Connor and the Ultravox and John Prine CD sets. Wish more RSD exclusive releases were on CD. Ultravox was listed as RSD exclusive and ltd to 1,500 copies (assume for USA) yet I see in the comments here that it has been re-released in the EU after drop 1 so who knows. Would have liked to get the Clash interview release but the cost was outrageous. Need to track down the Jerry Dammers demos release as it didn’t come out in the US (thanks Paul for the video as I wasn’t aware of that one). Now waiting for the live Tears for Fears release from drop 1 to get a wide CD release (September?).
I managed to get everything I wanted from drop 2:
The Cure – Wild Mood Swings
The Cranberries – Stars
Sisters of Mercy – BBC Sessions
I was surprised that Wild Mood Swings sounds fantastic considering it’s a picture disc, I’m so pleased to finally own this album on vinyl.
I’m in the UK and have just bought the UK issued Rory Gallagher, Complex and USA issued Allman Brothers, Gun Club albums, all readily available at what seem extremely close to normal shop prices. This is different to previous pre Covid RSD’s where inflated prices have featured. I wonder why?
Because normal shop prices have caught up with RSD prices? Record companies have realised consumers will stomach high prices for RSD releases so why not for “normal” releases?
It’s probably because you are not collecting the Sisters of Mercy ;) £44 for a double album…
I think the prices are a bit all over the place. Both for RSD and normal issues. I also see a trend of some CDs being more expensive for no reason.
I only wanted Donna Summer, though I could live without it as I have the VMP version which appears to be more sought-after. Crazy prices online, as always.
I did get the Björk “Cosmogony” picture disc because like someone said already, it’s beautiful.
I bought what I wanted online like for Drop 1. Most wanted is the Dee Gees/Foo Fighters LP, had to pay € 60 which was by far the lowest price online. Also the Matt Bellamy picture disc LP was hard to get as all the copies were sold by US sellers. But at the end I think I got almost everything I was searching for. I purchased the War box set this morning after watching Paul’s video.
Matt Bellamy’s rsd has been delayed. So some store’s didn’t receive their consignments on time. So keep an eye out this week.
There was nothing for me in drop 1, but drop 2 had a couple of real gems, both of which I was able to grab early yesterday morning. Firstly the Clash-If Music Could Talk promo interview double album; that should make really interesting listening – always good to hear what bands themselves think of the albums they make instead of just so-called ‘critics’, and secondly the War album collection box set (thanx for including that in your unboxing video Paul!), which I feared would be well out of my price range, but when I paid a (on-line) visit to my local indie store there is was for just £85! Apparently it arrived slightly damaged, with splits occurring on either the top or side of three of the five albums, but as I’ve got a lot of albums with splits in them (occurring either at time of purchase or later), I decided that I could quite happily live with that. So very happy with my purchases, although gawd knows where I’m gonna store them, having long since run out of space for any more vinyl!
I wish there was a RSD in my country. Record stores are almost all gone (in the capital city you can count them with your hands and in other large cities they’re nonexistent) and they sell almost exclusively vinyl records. I have to import almost everything. RSD may be flawed but it’s better than nothing, so value it while it lasts.
what country do you live in?
Chile
Went online after six and looked around on several store websites for the best deal on what I was interested in – prices varied for individual items by as much as £6 or £8 so it was/is worth putting the effort in and looking. My tastes being eclectic, I bought vinyl from Bobbie Gentry and from the Radiophonic Workshop. No store website had the Sweet vinyl remaining, a source of irritation for myself and some Glam friends of mine on Twitter. Considerable more irritation to be felt today when looking on eBay as lo and behold! copies of the Sweet RSD21 release abounding, double or treble yesterday’s price. And a lot apparently on sale from the USA!!
The Record Shop in Amersham had a few copies of the Sweet LP, might be worth giving them a call to see if they have any left.
I’m glad this time there don’t seem to be any vinyl that I’ve seen selling for high prices on eBay…maybe people have lost a little interest in the hiked prices and Sikkim colour vinyls.
I don’t mind RSD but as long as you’re fussy and stick to what you want. I managed to get the four I wanted online after the event no stress.
I only wish these new releases, this new ‘expanded box set generation’ would stop doing so many colour vinyl…I hate them!!
Also the ridiculous ‘Limited to 20,000 copies (Dèjà vu) this year…I’ll repeat that…’Limited to 20,000 copies’.
Most vinyl runs of the 70’s were about 5-10k. Why is that limited? Surely then everything ever made is limited?
Great that Supergrass have finally released their best album on vinyl…but not as a black vinyl or stand sling single vinyl? Shame as their large box set last year contained all vinyls as picture discs…even worse!
Anyway, glad vinyls back in action and I at least have the choice not to buy stuff!
K
Have to agree with you on the coloured vinyl thing. Even though the quality of ‘coloured’ (i.e. non-black) vinyl has improved since the early days, I still feel that standard vinyl is generally better. I have found that a lot of the coloured vinyl I have purchased (basically because I have not had the option of a black-variant) as turned out to be noisier than I would like.
It really does make me think twice if something is only available as coloured vinyl (or even worse picture disc). A recent example being The Cure’s Wild Mood Swings which I would love to have on vinyl but certainly not as a picture disc.
I’ve always wondered: where did the phrase “And what have you done with my body, God?” originate? Is it from some Bible parable, or is it the punchline to a joke, or just something Paul Morley came up with?
Splurged on the two drops online. For drop 1 I had some trouble because Newbury Comics online had some kind of glitch where you went through the whole order process and then when you clicked “submit” it said “Newbury Comics does not ship to NY.” Since when? Left a lot of NY online customers angry. They never apologized but fixed it because I was able to order from them yesterday. Wound up with Pearl Jam Alive vinyl & cassette, The Cure Wild Mood Swings, Queen + Adam Lambert Live Around the World EP with the bonus Freddie Mercury 7”, and Hall & Oates Voices. Had Sisters of Mercy in my cart but took it out since I was showing my wallet no mercy, but may still see if it’s available if it haunts me.
I don’t have record player anymore, does the Harold and Maude (or any other RSD releases) usually come with DL codes? Thank you.
judging from past purchases, some do, some do not. The Harold and Maude LP indeed does include a download code.
Good to know that there’s a code included. Also, if anyone wants to see the film the music was for, then you can pick a dvd copy up on Amazon go about £4. It will be a German copy (Harold und Maude) but just select “English audio” option and away you go! I bought a copy a few weeks back as I was curious after buying (and loving) the two SDE box sets. The track If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out seemed quite twee until I saw it in its context within the film, after which it has become a total earworm!
My orange colored version arrived yesterday and there is no DL code to be seen.
Booked a slot at my local store for this drop and got what I wanted plus a couple more;
Cat Stevens (yellow vinyl)
Donna Summer
The Selecter
Sinead O’Connor EP
Bee Gees Three Kisses
Ramones live (It’s RSD!)
Millie 7” EP
Passed on the Dee Gees as I’m not a Foo Fighters fan, but ordered the Dylan 12” and Freddie 7” online at 6pm once I’d taken stock of the fiscal impact of the first visit!
I agree with a lot of readers that some of the prices were a bit rich, especially Hot Rocks. I was also put off by some of the £35-£40 doubles although the Donna Summer was a must!
It will be good to get back to a single day next year in April as before. This year hasn’t been too bad compared to 2020, where there was some ‘special’ event every month from August to November once you added in HMV, National Album Day and Black Friday (not forgetting Love Record Stores in June!!). There was also a lot more dross last year as they tried to pad out the release schedules to a decent looking amount
Completely forgot about this second drop, but managed to get Tangerine Dream from a seller at a good price. Would like the Art of Noise, but that will have to wait!
Wasn’t able to get to a store, but got the Matt Bellamy Cryosleep LP online from a local store in Devon…although apparently French customs problems prevented the vinyls arriving in store yesterday. Also grabbed the Possum OST by the Radiophonic Workshop on green vinyl.
Not enough this time to get me motivated enough to visit a shop in person. I found the items I wanted easy enough online post 6pm. Purchased Rory Gallagher, Hawkwind Greasy Truckers, Jerry Dammers, and Queen (which I thought might be difficult but seems to be easy – not sure I believe the published production numbers on that one). I would have got the Dee Gees for a bit of fun but that is stupid money everywhere. I’m sure this material will get a further release so I’m happy to wait on that…
I like the two-drop approach and items can be sold on-line by the retailer. The key for me is that as the retailer can sell stock on-line after the store closes is a huge win-win. This approach is starting to hit the eBay flippers as they cannot buy everything as they jump out of bed and queue to make a $ and destroy the ethos of RSD.
Drop Two this year only wanted Purple Disco Machine and Durutti Column. No problems both purchased for the “standard price” plus postage from two different store on-line after 6pm. Both items were going for Between £75.00 and £50.00 on eBay from 9am in the UK!
Durutti compared to other years explains my view. RSD Short Stories Pauline still at silly prices but the next re-issue is a better pressing IMO and still available for £20.00 where the RSD is over £40.00, and both are a “limited” release of 500 copies.
Drop One, this year i went into “town” on a booked appointment (after 11:00am) and purchased a couple more than planned as getting RSD issues for OSC, Belle and Seb and others has become a habit rather than must have buys.
The only real must haves in Drop One for me were The Thrills (although the pressing is poor), Steely Dan not previously on vinyl releases (pressings are excellent). To be honest must of these went to one side as Ian McNabb – Utopian vinyl arrived the same day, so RSD releases went to the back of the listening queue. Although Steely Dan remain turntable regulars and does Utopian.
Hot Rocks sums up what RSD has become, nothing new, no updated mix, release like the 2013 US clear vinyl issue and twice the price for an Obi and a different set of pics, not value for $ for me. Each to their own.
Happy record store day and long may it continue. Hopefully in a similar approach and not the cold early morning queue and madness we have seen pre COVID.
Utopian is a tremendous album.
Here’s hoping that it generates a bit of media interest for Ian, bring him back in to the spotlight where he should be.
I would highly recommend this (and his last couple of releases but everything really) to SDE.
There’s a vinyl release of his 1994 Crazy Horse collaboration ‘Head Like A Rock’ due some time soon. Never released on vinyl and it looks like Ian is releasing a limited run of this (with extras if he can find the tapes :) )
I totally agree, Utopian is an outstanding piece of work.
For an Artist to more or less do everything himself & put out his stuff on vinyl, which he doesn’t make money on, is a rarity these days. Yes he does cd’s as well (they come out first).
He has a loyal fanbase to which he sells his music to & doesn’t get the publicity his art & craft deserves.
Well worth checking out.
Not much l wanted this year. Got Jerry Dammers 10″ Demos yesterday. That was it.
I think that both drops have been a bit of a disappointment on the whole for me personally. I got Ultravox Vienna on vinyl on the last one and the Art of Noise on this one so at least I got one from each. There is also very little of interest in HMVs upcoming 1921 exclusives. I was thinking maybe the Gary Numan LP but not at that price and it’s not one of my favourites anyway. I have the two John Foxx LPs on preorder (The Garden and Church) so looking forward to them. Let’s hope there’s some big box set announcements over the next month or two from the likes of the Human League (Dare), Ultravox (Rage In Eden) and Soft Cell (Cabaret) and possibly some others from 40 years ago.
Thanks for the preview. I got pretty much all the items I wanted. I would have gotten the WAR box if there had been a bigger book/booklet, but the price was too high for me without one.
I read that they changed the track order on the Who’s Afraid Of The Art Of Noise? reissue. Is that true? If so, why on earth would you change a perfectly sequenced album like that? Lunacy.
Adam- the tracklist running order for art of noise is as per the original release. The album cover has them listed incorrectly. The labels on the vinyl are correct though. Just listened to my copy. Brought back memories of my youth when I had it on cassette!
My first attempt at RSD… sort of. Only thing that interested me was the Vienna 2 CD with instrumental versions. No huge loss if I couldn’t snag a copy, but thought it would be interesting to have. Tried checking the websites of my local shops and found the available information to be quite lacking. Ended up ordering from Rough Trade in NY for about $17 including shipping.
That was from Drop 1 thought right. I got the box set which had all the content I needed. Can’t really see the point in instrumentals, just feels like a bunch of B-Sides to me.
Drop 1 in the UK, Drop 2 in the US.
Here in the US it was released yesterday. I too have the box set, but it was a “what the hell” purchase. Like I said, only $17 delivered, so not too bad.
The Vienna 2cd is available on banquet records for £10. Ships worldwide.
The Vienna CD was released in the first drop last month as an ‘RSD exclusive’ (but was only exclusive in that it was an early release) & was then (re)released normally on 2nd July (Same packaging/track listing, just without the RSD sticker & cheaper at £11 compared to the £15 most retailers were selling it for during RSD!)

Did anyone get the Elastica singles box in Drop Day 1 last month ? Tempted by it but its pricey for the content.
I did. It was pricey at £50, but if you think that 1 7″ goes for £10+ these days, it wasn’t overly priced…that’s how i rationalised it anyway. It is quite a nice box, but I just haven’t had chance to listen to it yet. Apparently a couple of the singles have their labels switched, see discogs reviews.
That and the TFF vinyl, which I only got as the shop had run out of CDs, ran to £80, which is pretty ridiculous really :/
Wanted to get three volumes of The Monkees’ Missing Links but fifty quid EACH was ludicrous. Considering Mike Nesmith is selling signed (and dedicated) albums for half that on his site, I can’t believe that they approved of that price point.
Got everything I wanted again – Stones, Sisters, Love, Lou Reed, Richmond Fontaine’s Post to Wire (one of the greatest Americana albums of the this century) Dave Davies’ Bug (never heard this before but listened in the queue and was sold – lots of good Kinks -like songs and lovely pink and yellow vinyl).
Price for Stones and Sisters was steep, especially Sisters at £42 quid with no inserts, booklets or whatever – just the two vinyls.
Noticeably thin on the ground in terms of people queuing and the shop had everything left to buy online at 6pm so could’ve had a lay in. I think the multiple drop days are wearing a bit thin from talking to people, so let’s go back to one day next year – preferably June/ July when it’s nice and warm.
The cheapest RSD in many years. Nothing I wanted during the first drop and happy with just the Pearl Jam – Alive 12″ and cassette [although € 20 for a cassette is ridiculous….].
Happy to get the Squid 12″ which was the only one I really wanted from this drop.
Due to illness, unable to travel to a store this year, but managed to get Wildhearts, Dylan, Magnum, Dio, Squid, Black Sabbath, Hawkwind, Pvris and Tangerine Dream online…!
For the first time I could get my hands on ALL the RSD titles I wanted. :)
Starting with the most important release, imho: the re-creation of the original UK packaging for Black Sabbath’s “Master of reality”.
This album was released not in a normal sleeve but in a fragile box of thin cardboard, with the lettering embossed on the front and the name of the album being black on black.
It also had a poster.
It is absolutely impossible to get one original 1970 copy today in Mint condition. And with the poster.
Thanks to this RSD, you can now get the next best thing: a faithfull reproduction. Brand new.
I also got my hands on :
-Bjork Cosmogony: beautiful picture 12” in a beautiful illustrated heavy plastic sleeve.
-CSN&Y – Déjà vu alternates
-Magma: Simples. A 10” giving us all the titles from their very rare 45s from the early 70s.
–
And also from the previous batch:
-The Kinks Percy (complete with textured cover)
-Joe Strummer 12” pic disc from Dark Horse Records
-Genesis 12” from Knebworth
-Prince – The truth
-Black Francis – Abbabubba
A good year for RSD.
(But Yikes how the prices are sometimes quite scandalous !)
Master Of Reality was released in the summer of 1971. So the copy from 1970 is REALLY hard to find!
How does the Kinks sound? I was tempted but the fact that it’s picture disc put me off at that price – to quote Paul “everyone knows that picture discs sound like sh*t” lol
Nice preview, but I wasn’t tempted to rush out for anything today … though I may look on-line later!
Just to add to the “what’s coming” … there’s an interview with Ronnie Wood in The Times today where he mentions “Me and Mick have done nine new tracks for the 40th anniversary re-release of Tattoo You.” and also that he’s been recording some new Faces music with Rod Stewart and Kenney Jones.
I just hate these anniversary releases of the Rolling Stones. Who wants to hear tracks, that was originally recorded in the 70’s and then the overdubs were done in this century? And to me it’s not the Faces without Ian McLagan and Ronnie Lane!
Wasn’t a lot I wanted. Not enough to queue. Ended up in my local record store around 12 and the only thing I might be interested in, The Stones ‘Hot Rocks’ was there! At €60 for a double vinyl though, I had to pass after the Amazon Germany sale a few weeks ago.
Agree, 1 drop next year would be better. Got what I wanted – the Happy Mondays Hallelujah 12”, no queue, bonus!
Got the Sisters of Mercy and the March Violets, that was all I needed. But the prices are ridiculous. Glad no Bowie this year, the day was expensive enough.
Thanks for the video. I got everything I wanted, without needing to queue;
Beastie Boys – Aglio E Olio this is on clear vinyl, although the hype sticker, and RSD listing, don’t mention this.
This Is Ann Peebles violet colour vinyl
Millie – My Boy Lollipop EP
I would have liked Stones – Hot Rocks, but not at £45.
Got the ones I was after, The Dee Gees, Aretha Live, Miles Davis Jack Johnson Outtakes & the Black Sabbath. Joined the queue at 6:10 & was back home by 9am & that was with a 30 mile round trip in the car. R-e-s-u-l-t!
Only really fancied the Sisters Of Mercy sessions LP, but at £42 for a double they can keep it. Why is it so expensive compared to other similar items. Hopefully it will come out on CD in the future…
it’s on smoky vinyl & limited to 4,000
And? Compare with TFF from Drop 1. Double LP, limited to 3,500 copies on black vinyl for £30. So are you suggesting the smokey grey vinyl runs at an extra £10 or so? Nah! And you even got a download with the TFF one. This just smacks of taking advantage of RSD and it’s starting to grate a little. Don’t get me wrong, I love buying a bit of vinyl, but it’s pricing itself out of my budget.
I wouldnt get overly excited bout TFF download its in crummy 320 MP3, and in this day and age LOL
Well I bought it and am very happy with the music, but EUR 49,00…ouch
And yes, it is smokey vinyl, but not even a gatefold or printed inner sleeves.
Hope we go back to just ONE drop next year? But lets keep it in June/July as it’s much nicer queuing outside when it’s warm and sunny!
Nice video, Paul. That John Prine looks mighty nice. This morning i went for and managed to get the Cat Stevens (in Orange), the Keane Dirt EP, the Gorillaz box set and the Foo Fighters’ Dee Gees. Considered buying the Cure picture discs of Wild Mood Swings but decided to wait for the inevitable release on black or coloured vinyl. And keep patiently waiting for a Wish vinyl reissue :)
I was tempted by Gorillaz as I don’t have anything of theirs on vinyl, but then realised it’s an ‘RSD first’ release , so it will be getting rereleased again soon (almost certainly with some price drops). I had the same with the Ultravox cd in the last drop – the exact same set was released again 2 weeks after the ‘RSD exclusive’ release !
Ouch, i had not seen that. Must check better next time.
Hi RSD early birds, great atmosphere in queue and well organised at Slide Records in Bedford. Managed to get Mike Oldfield, Queen and Freddie Mercury. The Dee Gees sold out very quickly. Hope you all get what you are searching for.
I was second in the Q at my local shop. Got the Stones & the March violets. Done !!!
This year’s RSD has been pretty disappointing. The second batch especially. To use a cricket analogy. For me, “nothing to trouble the scorers” this drop.
Great video as always Paul. Thank you. I thought the Art Of Noise was supposed to be on coloured vinyl?
