mov – cut from digital source ?
The album reissue is cool but the press pack is much more impressive
Paul am i not right in thinking that Waxwork records released the definitive double lp of this
soundtrack about 2 years ago using the original score in triple coloured vinyl?
What is the difference ? Is this more original ? Thanks
Yes, I have that Waxwork release. This reissue keeps to the original artwork and is basically true to the audio that everyone has listened to for the last 30/40 years. But the Waxwork release was the first to use Hermann’s actual score as used in the film (I think). And also has very impressive artwork. I’d say both are essential, to be honest.
I still don’t quite understand, is this version what you would have heard in the cinema in 1976 ? or as seems to be suggested re recorded at some later date ? Or is the waxwork version the original music from the film ,or is it the version Herrman wanted to use but couldn’t. You say both are essential would you (could you) see a real difference when listening ? Thanks in advance Paul
The version you would have heard in the cinema is the Waxwork version. This version is the soundtrack that was released at the time and was the only one available for 30 or 40 years. I listened to this version for decades not realising it was not the version in the film. I must admit I haven’t listened to the Waxwork one in full yet…
You can also easily get a CD version of the Taxi Driver soundtrack that includes both the original music, as heard in the film, and the inferior jazzy cover versions that were released as the soundtrack. All that and no surface noise.
Ha! Original TD press pack – how cool! I remember going to see the film in London (probably with you?) and it blew my mind. Funnily enough, when I first moved to LA, I wrote a lot of press notes for studios – the format hasn’t really changed – credits, notes, bios. (But sadly you don’t get the photos now…).
Thanks again Paul, much appreciated – I love Taxi Driver, some great stuff there!
So is there no inlay with the new vinyl? Thought it might contain some new writing.
And did we ever get to the bottom of whether this new release is the original / authentic tracks? (Must admit, I got confused by the comments on the other thread.)
I must admit I expected some kind of insert, but there isn’t one. The music on this soundtrack is as per originally released at the time, although ironically they are re-recordings, apparently. I think it was years/decades before the actual score was made available. I’m normally a purist, but I grew up with *this* version so I really like it, but of course people will have other views.
Out of curiosity, Paul, if you’re a self-described ‘purist’, where do you stand on remixes like those produced for The Beatles’ anniversary sets or the ‘Steven Wilson Remixes’ from Jethro Tull? Would be interesting to hear your take
