I know SDE dosnt claim to be a audiophile oriented product but I’m not too impressed with the stereo mixes on this release:( They’re pretty compressed and I’m guessing they’re based off the 1998 remaster . Really wished the original album portion for make it big used the excellent Japanese sacd master. Also it would of been awesome if the remastered last Christmas music video could of been included as a bonus. But other than that this is a neat feature loaded release
I don’t think they are compressed at all. Even the hard-to-please Mark Sinclair was raving about them!
In comparison to the old SACD they are less dynamic

Since when is a DR rating of 10 “pretty compressed”? There’s so much more to these products than the stereo mixes anyway. Where’s the 21 bonus tracks on the SACD? Oh yeah, there aren’t any…
I appreciate the supplemental package and atmos mixes on both albums a lot, this was first SDE purchase
Thanks!
I’m not a Wham fan (George Michael is a different matter), but the thought of Club Tropicana in Atmos was too difficult to resist. Cooooool!
These are such stellar releases. I’m not a HUGE Wham! fan, but given the quality of the audio and the cornucopia of material on it, I HAD to get them.
If only other bands did the same, I would buy their releases with as much enthusiasm. But, really, just the album (ATMOS and stereo) and no extra audio…?
I mean, given how much these cost, you’d want to give your fans as much as possible. Well… with the Wham! discs, we couldn’t possibly have asked for more.
Thanks Paul. These are brilliant! :):):)
Thank you! :)
I dont even have a set up to play this but im still buying these blu rays nonetheless.
Paul you should be very proud of these two releases. The bonus content and mixes are excellent and getting anything from the George Michael estate is like squeezing blood from a stone. I have listened to these two Blu-rays with great joy as the spatial mixes are quite good. I own quite a bit of 5.1 and Atmos mixes on DVDs, Blu-rays and super audio CDs and as far as I know, it’s the first time that I have a proper 12” mix in Atmos! So, well done!! My only complaint is that you can’t press a button to listen to the entire Blu-ray including bonus tracks. Maybe that is because some bonus tracks are in Atmos while others are not. It’s like having to turn over a record from A to B side. All in all, outstanding releases!! Can’t wait to get my Keane Blu-ray this week! The David Kosten spatial mix should be sensational.
Thanks Kauwgompie! It’s a tricky business delineating the content but glad you are enjoying the discs.
Thanks for a great film Paul and more so for your dedication and attention to detail on these releases. I always thought it sad that the albums didn’t get full remastering (to my knowledge) and have frequently felt let down by the official wham releases from the final onwards, with last years singles compilation doing little to correct that. As one of the greatest singles bands ever, it’s hard to argue against the 45s being whams pinnacle, but having ray of sunshine, come on, heartbeat and like a baby (to name but 4 ) afforded the same appreciation in remastered sound is, pardon the pun, fantastic. My only grizzle (which is long-standing) is, can the fantastic album not be restored to its original vinyl running order, digitally? Hearing the instrumentals break up side one and two was annoying on the original cd, but to have that since replicated on streaming and now this otherwise superb package is a bit of a head scratcher. This in no way should detract from two excellent pieces of curation and presentation and I’d urge any wham fan to snap these up before they go-go. Much appreciation.
No surprises that the Wham releases got fav reviews. I’ve been listening to the Dolby Atmos mix on Tidal so I knew they were good but they’re even better from disc. Paul did a great job securing all the extra stereo material. Also, nice inside cover on the Paul Young blu-ray, can’t remember if any other release has been like that.
The Keane blu-ray should be delivered today so looking forward to hearing that. This means we’re all up to date with the SDE releases, there must be an announcement for the next one soon?
I don’t even have Atmos gear but I got these for the comprehensive bonus tracks. This should be the benchmark for all Blu-ray audio releases.
I’m not in the market for these, but they really are spectacular issues. To all those involved, well done. I’m glad to see the fans enjoying them immensely.
You’ve every right to feel proud of these Paul! They sound the best they ever have and are brim-full of extra tracks… Well done!!
I’ve been confined to my recliner this week as I recover from foot surgery. These two blu-rays are helping to make the days go by! Chris Porter did a great job with the surround mixes. I only have a 5.1 system (no Atmos) but these downmix to 5.1 really well. Porter isn’t afraid to make some bold choices when spreading things around the surround field and I’m really loving his mixing style. Hope to see his name on some future surround titles. Can’t wait until I am back on my feet so I can bring these to a friend’s house who has an Atmos system.
As for the bonus content…. Well, George said “if you’re gonna do it, do it right”. And these have indeed been done right. Amazing job curating the bonus content Paul. With so much available space on blu-rays, it’s a shame more discs don’t have this kind of bonus content. And much of it in Atmos as well. It’s great to have these discs curated by a fan who knows what fans want! With these two discs you’ve made them big and they are indeed fantastic!
All of George’s solo albums are available in Atmos on the streaming services. Hopefully someday those could be part of the SDE series. The one that surprised me the most was Songs From the Last Century. It had been my least favorite of George’s albums, but the Atmos mix got me reappraising it. It really is a fine record and the Atmos mix is excellent. Would love to have it on a blu-ray someday.
With Hopes and Fears on its way to me, that means we’re all caught up. Can you give us any hints as to when we’ll hear about the next title in the series?
Completely agree with all the comments below, great content and great sound.
Love the fact that these are probably the original masters.
Of course sympathetic digital remastering to take advantage of the greater dynamic range of 16 bit or 24 bit digital versus vinyl is always welcome provided aggressive limiting is not used. I’d much rather the original master than a aggressively limited remaster.
I prefer Fantastic to Make It Big but both albums are still quality.
As others have stated, these releases are spot on perfection.
Most importatnt is the sound….and these deliver in Spades. Great separation and fantastic bottom end. Deon Estus must be smiling down at the way his fluid basslines sound on these. What a treat to hear these songs so clearly.
The amount of bonus tracks is just the icing on the cake. You can tell when releases are done from a fan’s perspective and Paul has really delivered the goods here….and I’m not even a huge Wham fan! But I am a giant fan of music and this is extremely well done pop music and it will never sound better.
Amazing job!!!
Thanks so much!
After watching the video, I cannot wait to pop these into my CD/DVD player. But what if I only have a 5.1 setup? Will these fold down nicely? Just kidding of course. You cover these points more than adequately. What a treat to have these as deluxe editions on one disc. Oh and thanks for answering my question as to why the Make It Big back cover is upside down.
Cheers!
DVD player? That won’t play them!
Honestly, the 14 years old me would never ever have thought, that I’d ever (ever! EVER!!) buy a Wham! album (or even …. TWO!) in my whole life! And honestly again, the 50+ version of me wouldn’t have thought, either. But anyway – I did! I still don’t think that it’s my music (ever!), but I promise, I’ll even listen to them next week or so ….
What people do to support a business that seems to be worth to support ;-) Keep up the good work!
Cheers!
Just did the same! And Wham is a bit of a Guilty Secret!
I will listen to these as soon as they arrive.
I wish other companies reached out to fan groups or websites like this to produce this type of product, perfect example would be Seals first album.
Two more into the SDE collection.
P.S. Even Deadpool loves Wham!
I love these and yes I was one of those suckers who thought it was a missprint (but I didn’t contact you lol). Love the eye for detail and all the extra tracks on it (that was an important one to make me buy this set).
Honestly, these two SDE exclusives are as good as it gets, and they are probably the highlight of the entire series given the number of bonus tracks that have been included on both discs. More importantly, the sound is amazing.
You could probably argue that they don’t include the complete instrumental versions of the entire album (such as ABC’s Lexicon of Love and TFF’s The Hurting) but I’m more than happy with what has been included.
Superb as always, Paul.
Many thanks! :)
Great video, Paul. As a big GM/Wham! fan I was waiting for you to get something wrong, but you really know your stuff. My Blu Rays arrived a couple of weeks ago and look great and sound amazing. Love that you’ve been entrusted with this project – you’ve curated this brilliantly. I’m hoping that having another big name project like this under your belt will attract even more big names, and that GME will let you loose on the GM back catalogue. Thanks again.
Thanks! Yes, these came out really well and Sony were great partners on this project!
I agree with @barnjarn about the curation. These SDE exclusives show much attention to detail and real love for the product. I’m curious about how you decided where in the album sequence to include the instrumentals of A Ray of Sunshine and Love Machine. I’d think they’d be further separated from the vocal versions, or even after the original album sequence.
Couldn’t find a discussion of that in the comments from the announcement post, so asking here.
The placement was the same as how they are on the CD (and cassette). I guess I could have moved them to being ‘bonus tracks’ as Geoff has suggested on this thread, but there is a historical precedent for the way it is now.
Thanks for the info, and pointing out Geoff’s comment about it. I read right past it…
