Sony Music has collaborated with SuperDeluxeEdition on Tomb of Memories: The CBS Years 1982-1994, a new Paul Young four-CD collection set for release in August.

Compiled by SDE Editor Paul Sinclair (with input from Young), this new collection spans Paul’s entire tenure with CBS/Sony and is awash with rarities, taking in many new-to-CD cuts, demos, previously unreleased alternate mixes of album tracks (and hit singles) along with unheard songs recorded during the sessions for The Secret of Association, Other Voices and The Crossing.

Highlights from this 64-track collection are numerous. They include the original seven-inch version of Paul’s first CBS single Iron Out The Rough Spots, a remarkable demo version of No Parlez album track Tender Trap, the 1982 seven-inch mix of Love of the Common People (which failed to chart!), the original 4.59 LP version of Come Back and Stay – which despite many issues of Paul’s debut, has never appeared on CD – and the inclusion of the five-track Japan-only live album The Live Edition. And all that’s just on the first disc!!

The second CD focuses on Paul Young’s 1985 album The Secret of Association (celebrating its 30th anniversary this year). This kicks off with Find One Voice, a song completed for the album but then dropped. Written by Anthony Moore (who penned No Parlez’s title track) Find One Voice is a funky, quirky delight that stylistically sits between the ‘anything goes’ fun of No Parlez and the more mature offerings of The Secret of Association. Amazingly, this was never selected as a B-side to any single and has remained in the archive unheard for over 30 years! In addition, this second disc offers previously unreleased alternate versions of hit singles Everything Must Change and Tomb of Memories, plus some rare B-side variations unique to the vinyl singles of that era (such as the early mix of evocative album track This Means Anything). Also included is the full length extended version of US number one Every Time You Go Away.

Between Two Fires (1986) and Other Voices (1990) saw Paul’s commercial fortune’s take a bit of a dip, although he still chalked up three top 30 UK hit singles during this period and delivered another US top ten hit with his fine Chi-Lites cover Oh Girl. That track is included on CD 3 (unreleased mix) along with alternate versions of the 45s Softly Whispering I Love You and How Does A Man Have to Be Strong. Another unheard song called Coralie – from the Other Voices sessions – ends disc three. Written again by Anthony Moore (Paul describes the song as “brilliant”), Coralie was mixed from the multi-track tapes especially for this collection.

1991 saw Paul Young back at the top of the UK charts with his best selling From Time to Time: The Singles Collection greatest hits set. Tomb of Memories: The CBS Years features an unreleased ‘solo’ version of the Crowded House cover Don’t Dream It’s Over(Paul Carrack sang on the original) and two fine collaborations: Senza Una Donna (Without a Woman), Paul’s popular duet with Zucchero, and Come On In, a track performed with Masayuki Suzuki and until now, exclusive to the Japanese version of From Time to Time.

The final long-player for CBS was 1993’s The Crossing. Ripe for rediscovery, this fine sophisticated pop album was mostly produced by Don Was and features the top 20 hit Now I Know What Made Otis Blue, which is included in this set along with a sprinkling of album tracks, an alternative mix of The Heart is a Lonely Hunter and a choice selection of some fine B-sides from this prolific period. A third and final unheard track is pulled from the archives for the last disc. Souls Unknown is a Steve Bolton composition (he wrote No Parlez highlight Ku Ku Kurama). According to Paul Young  the song was “the greatest fun to record” but was “a little too ‘out there’ for the record company!” That’s a bit of a shame because it’s an amazing track, if a little hard to describe – perhaps psychedelic heavy rock meets ‘Dragnet’ soundtrack..!

The CBS Years… finishes with some acoustic sessions recorded in 1994 at Abbey Road most of which found their way onto the CD singles of Paul’s last 45 for CBS Records, It Will Be You. Six tracks were recorded at that time, with five being issued. The acoustic rendition of The Crossing album track Love Has No Pride is released here for the first time. The ‘unplugged’ version of Paul’s 1983 number one Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home) is particularly splendid and completes the circle of The CBS Years by closing this four CD set.

Music has been remastered from original tapes

All the music here has been remastered (carefully) from the original tapes with the exception of the extended versions of Every Time You Go Away and I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down which use the 2013 remasters that featured on the Remixes and Rarities set. As is probably apparent, this set has been created with the involvement and enthusiasm of Paul Young himself and he provides a foreword for the collection which is packaged as a ‘bookset’. Music writer Daryl Easlea contributes an essay on Paul’s career and achievements.

  6. Hi Paul, just got this set as part of a holiday gift from my family, and it’s really well done…that and the Tears For Fears “The Hurting” box. Only 2 quibbles though. Not the packaging, I like the clip style, just have to be careful not to snap the clips off. First, what’s the deal with not having on “What Becomes Of The Brokenhearted”?? Licensing?? It did come out in 1992 (the Columbia/Sony era) on a US soundtrack and was a US hit single, so it would have been nice on this box. The other thing is the details on the tracklisting at the end of the booklet. Nothing, except writers credits, and that most were 2015 productions/remasters, some years were shown when a particular track was recorded. That could have been MUCH better, such as the original album & year the song was from (some people do not have the catalogue) or recorded for, or what single the song is a B-side of, but nothing. Every track detail could have read something instead like…

    About the TFF box, no videos on the DVD?? Why?? The “Songs From The Big Chair” box does, and in order to get the “Hurting” videos, you now have to buy a separate videos DVD, when the 3 clips could have easily been included on the concert DVD in the set, otherwise, great box.

I was originally going to contribute track-by-track annotations (a bit like I did for Songs From The Big Chair bonus tracks) but if I remember correctly, Sony were a bit up against it trying to meet a tight deadline and so unfortunately it didn’t happen :(

      The Hurting probably should have had the videos… can’t really remember why they weren’t included, but at least they’re on ‘Songs’!

    The box set reflects that the “Love of the Common People [1982 7” Mix] was used. However the UK CBS Records PY1 track is 3:18 long as opposed to the version you used which is 3:35. to make matters worse the 1982 EU Single CBS ‎3036 shows a time 3:43. Would you be able to help shed some light on this?

  9. Great value box set, brilliant choice of tracks and excellent sound quality. Always wondered if the chorus on the version of Why Does A Man Have To Be Strong included in the set was re-recorded or just a repeat of the final chorus. Also there are still a number of versions that need the remastering treatment: Playhouse (original 7″), Standing On The Edge (slightly longer cassette/album version), Some People (Video Remix) plus ‘proper’ re masters of Between Two Fires, Secret Of Association and The Crossing. Finally, any reason why the last part of Oh Women (live) and the piano intro of Wasting My Time was chopped?

    1. “Wasting My Time” was like that on the tape we found, so the piano must have been a later addition… PY took the decision to edit Oh Women when he sat in one of the remastering sessions. I wasn’t too happy about that but more information on this particular subject (and a lot more) on the ‘behind the scenes’ feature on putting this set together which should be published on Monday 24th.

        1. It was released yesterday! Mondays are no longer new release day. Still getting my head round that after 20+ years of visiting a record shop on most Mondays!

          Anyway, picked up the box set today. £20 in HMV. Looks good. I don’t yet have ‘Remixes and Rarities’. I haven’t done a detailed track comparison, but does that have stuff on it that this doesn’t?

    2. The last part of Oh Women (Live) is chopped because that’s how it was released on ‘The Live Edition’ & the double 7″ pack of Love Of The Common People, would be nice to hear the full version though.

    3. and don’t forget the original 7″ version of ‘Tender Trap’ on the b-side to the ’82 single release of ‘Love Of The Common People’.

  15. Officially tempted as this ticks multiple boxes when it comes to such sets. I like that it does not have just one goal in mind and the tracklisting is so adventurous. I’m in the minority, but somehow I managed to whiff on most of Paul Young’s career even though I grew up in the 80’s like many of us. The only songs I can name/recognize offhand are “Wherever I Lay My Hat” & “Playhouse”. Feel guilty for having been one of the underappreciaters of the underappreciated artist. I’ve apparently missed out on so much but this set appears to be the ideal antidote. At least a great start. Thanks Paul S & Sony. Not an instant order, I confess, but this high-quality collection is on list for sure.

  16. Only one track on here that I would love to have in CD quality, as I only have it on 12inch vinyl, and that is “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down” (Remixed US Dance Floor Smash). All the other tracks I can happily do without as the Deluxe Editions cover all the singles I needed to update from records. Nice though the boxset is, I do not think I will be bothering with it.

    1. That mix is also on “Remixes and Rarities” which was the other Paul Young set I compiled. You could probably pick that up for £8 or £9 somewhere.

      1. “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down” (Remixed US Dance Floor Smash) is also on the “Remixes and Rarities” release but most of the remixes on that compilation are on the deluxe albums which I already have, so I will stick to the vinyl for this particular mix.

    2. It’s been available in CD quality for 25 years first appearing on the CD single of Oh Girl. You couldn’t have been that desperate to have it or you would have known that and the deluxe editions were a mess especially The Secret Of Association where they put the 7″ Version of Everytime You Go Away instead of the 12″ Mix.

      1. I was SO disappointed with that mistake on Every Time You Go Away. That’s one of the reasons I put the extended version on “The CBS Years” because it’s rare-ish on CD, despite the fact it was on Remixes and Rarities.

        1. It was a bonus track on a Japanese release of The Secret Of Association released in 2009 but it was far too expensive so i was over the moon when you put it on Remixes and Rarities. It’s just a pity that you couldn’t be involved in reissuing all of his albums again as i for one would buy them again after the excellent job of Remixes and Rarities or could you ?

          1. Indeed. Remixes and Rarities was the first time on CD outside Japan. Don’t know if anyone has the appetite to reissue the albums again to be honest, but I suppose stranger things have happened!

    To Darren: this is my first “complaint” EVER (yes I used capitals just for you!), so you are 100% wrong…I didn’t even complain after I bought the Belinda cd with wrong tracks, Simple Minds box with errors, etc….you probably don’t even really like Paul’s music, so you should stay out of the conversation….

    I don’t think it’s a matter of “positive” or “negative”… more about sharing information which we fans are rarely privy to. We’re usually asked to buy-buy-buy, possibly without asking too many questions… But many of us are extremely interested in the remastering process for the items we buy. For the case in question, there’s been much speculation in the past about the actual existence of the No Parlez master tapes, and since you’ve compiled this great set, it might be as good a time as any to set the record straight.
    Keep up the good work!

    @Paul Sinclair, it would be interesting if you could tell us more about some of the questions raised above: why a different master (and not the original master) has been used for Come back and stay, and accordingly which master has been used for other album tracks from No parlez such as Oh women, Ku ku kurama …

    1. Hi Harry – thanks. Might go into some more detail in the coming weeks. Part of me is reluctant because when you offer up some detailed information there is always someone that wants to turn a positive into a negative, which is extremely tiresome.

Thanks, Kiefer2, for the help on the Hopeless Latham mix, but that also isn’t still it…..After reading the comments, I noticed quite a lot missing from this “completists” box set….I don’t usually bitch (seriously, NEVER!), but not including Easy (like Sunday morning) from that Sunday British newspaper compilation and some other REALLY rare stuff (which I think is some of Paul’s best!) is a shame if you are going to “milk” his catalog over and over….Paul, I love you and the website, & support you, but I’m just really over some of this continual re-releasing with just a few extra things added to bilk consumers once AGAIN….(The new Belinda box set a good example…)

  25. This looks wonderful. The cover photo is ace as does the tracklist. This and the recent ‘Remixes & Rarities’ set have reignited my interest in his work. Hopefully a new album one day.

    And I’ll add my name to the very long list of people hoping for the same treatment for Alison Moyet (which would be incredible).

  26. The Secret Of Association was seriously over produced back in the day, the songs were great but way over produced. I was always hopeful of a Remixed version that had less of the 80s production.

    1. How exactly could an album have been recorded in the 80s without it sounding like the 80s unless you want him to time travel and record in it another decade.

  27. The inclusion of the original No Parlez vinyl LP, still unreleased on CD, would have made this really interesting. It’s what PY fans have been waiting for decades. Still are.
    I don’t know if the original masters are actually lost, but if they’re not, it’s a bit puzzling to read that “Come Back And Stay (Full Length LP Version)” was not taken from the actual master, but “from some other tape” (why? So, is it actually the LP version? Is there something else we should know about the sources used for this box?)

    And the absence of “Love Will Tear Us Apart”, in any form, on a Paul Young box, is weird to say the least.

    The tracklist (some very interesting rare/unreleased tracks, some not-so-rare tracks, and many tracks fans already own) seems the typical tracklist designed to infuriate the hardcore fans, while probably not really appealing the casual fans.

    But on one thing you really can’t fail this box, and it’s the price, which I guess can make this worth purchasing for the rarities even if you already own many/most of the tracks.

    Still waiting for a proper No Parlez release though. If the tape are actually available, I don’t think it would be rocket science to put together a CD release with both the LP and cassette version.

  28. I just ordered mine! Thank you Paul S. for your efforts in al these reissues/boxsets! Is this the last one of Paul Young? I kept/keep buying! Spent lots of money already on Paul Young the recent couple of years! Everytime there’s something new (a few unreleased/hard to find/furst time on CD tracks)! Of course unless it’s the volume 2 of Rarities & Remixes! Then I will buy that!

  30. Thank goodness the original version of Love of the Common People (credited to Paul Young and the Family) is on here! At last!

    It’s basically the same track as on No Parlez except it’s before it was remixed and cut up.

    I bought this at the time and played it a lot and was amazed it tanked.

    I’ve always preferred the unmolested version but it seems to have become a rarity!

    I’d be interested to hear what others think of this version.

  31. I keep hoping to find the original 7″ version of “Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home)”, which Discogs says was 4:52. It never seems to be that version on any CD. It seems odd for a number one hit to not be available in its original 7″ mix.

    1. The so-called Extended Club Mix to me is really just a full length version, and a very good one at that. The shorter version(s) just never really do it for me because the outro section of the 12″/original CD mix is so good.

      1. I agree, but I already have that on “Remixes & Rarities”. I’d like to know if the 7″ version has ever been on CD… if you or anyone else knows?

Hiya Darren, like you I hope to find the original 7 inch version of Wherever I Lay My Hat (That’s My Home) (4.52), but alas that version was re-recorded soon after, as Paul Young was never happy with his vocal performance on it. That ended up as the 4.11 version so often found on countless 80s compilation. You can listen to the original version if you go to Youtube and enter Paul Young and the title in the search box. I don’t know if the master tape exists or was destroyed under Paul’s request?

  34. Why does Both Sides Now keep getting ignored on his compilations as it only appears on From Time To Time (The Singles Collection) and it would be nice to hear a remastered version.

      * the 1982 7″ version that will be on the new box
      * a similar mix that’s in my link, but a bit longer in duration
      * the 1983 album version (very rare on CD, only on a US copy of No Parlez)

      * the 4.00 version that appeared on the 25th anniversary edition of No Parlez

  36. Paul, can you be more specific on which US No Parlez release I can find the original album version of Love Of The Common People? By the way: I must say that I already own the original 7″ version of the song on CD. It appeared on numerous various artistst 80s hit compilations, specific on Dutch releases.

    1. It’s not the standard 7″ that is on this set. That is the 1983 version you are referring to. This is the 1982 version which hasn’t been on ANY CD. Trust me. You need CK 38976 for the US CD.

  40. Very happy to have this in my collection at such a reasonable price. I ordered a signed copy and to deliver it to Australia its just $48 all up including postage. Great value.
    I will second the calls for George Michael & Wham! and also Alison Moyet and Sade. Remasters and expanded editions of those catalogues is long overdue. Would love 25th Anniversary remasters of Listen Without Prejudice etc. Would love expanded editions of Alf and Raindancing in particular. Diamond Life should be remastered and expanded too. So many great albums and singles and extended mixes etc in the Sony ctalogue for us to drool and dream over!!

  43. Haven’t most of these tracks already been on the Paul Young Deluxe Editions and the Rarities and Remixes compilation? A lot of money just to get a few more different versions and SOME unreleased tracks when they could have been added to the Deluxe Editions. I suppose it is a good way for the greedy record companies to put a bit more money in their bank accounts.

  45. Look like a great set- a lot of people mentioned Sade which i agree with but putting this type of set out is the artist decision or the music company’s decision- I’m guessing music company? If so do they need permission from the artist?

    It is not that obvious to invest 18 months of work and to put the effort of releasing this and hiring the best man in the business for this. Paul, is there a way to continue the momentum with other artists (Wham! that was my guess…). I think you have the power and the contacts to do more amazing projects like this.

  58. Great. Will be ordering mine. Disappointed on the no show DVD. I have a VHS of his Greatest Hits, and some great promos (especially the ‘Other Voices’ era). Also feel ‘Other Voices’ a bit overlooked here, what with ‘Calling You’ & ‘Stop on By’ amongst his best tracks, but they are obviously available elsewhere.
    You had a few George Michael fans in a flurry . . . they were expecting a LWP (vols 1&2!) 25th anniversary announcement!

  59. Paul, a fantastic set, looking foreward to this, just two questions.
    1. is the Tender Trap (demo) the version that was on the original Love Of The Common People 7″ b-side?, or will this still be unreleased to CD?
    2. is the alternate version of Why Does A Man Have To Be Strong? the released 7″ Version, which is radically different to the Album Version?
    oh and just noticed I Need Somebody (b-side to Don’t Dream It’s Over) is missing, not a great song but a shock to hear Paul swearing.

    1. No, Tender Trap is a completely unreleased demo which has some big differences to any released version. Why Does A Man Have to Be Strong is the ‘video version’ will Paul singing ‘full voice’ on the choruses. I Need Somebody was on here but PY didn’t really want to include it, so it got axed!

    1. No, it’s different. It’s the original seven-inch mix which is around 3.40. This was later remixed for the ‘hit’ seven-inch version and the album.

  64. I’m confused about the version of Oh Girl on CD3, It’s marked as 7″ Mix, yet described as an “unreleased version” in Paul’s text.

    I would also like a reply to the earlier poster’s query about Wonderland.

    Like Oh Girl, I always thought both tracks were simply the album versions. Is this not the case?

    1. Oh Girl is the 7″ mix that *should* have been released, but wasn’t (probably in error). It ‘ends’ rather than fades out. Wonderland is the normal seven-inch mix, which I don’t think is radically different.

  65. With all of the live radio shows he did around the time of ‘No Parlez’, is there any chance we may ever get a much needed, good sounding, live album from PY? I had one [show] on tape for years…Paul with the “Fabulous Wealthy Tarts”…it was just phenomenal. Best thing I ever recorded from radio.

    1. If this proves successful, would love do some some kind of live anthology. The performances on “The Tube” were also excellent.

    And judging from the other comments – it will be quite a reasonable price even for us Aussies. Double hurrah! (I’m not with Amazon but hopefully some Oz sites will be listing it soon – there are a couple that have really good deals, even with imports.)

  68. Paul, I loved most of tracklisting on this but was disappointed that the single remix of “Hope in a Hopeless World” was not added. The remix was radically different than the album version (different vocals and sounds) and all the cd singles were misprinted at the time, saying they included the single remix. I’ve been looking all over for the full remix for years so was hoping this box would have it…:-)….Great job on the compilation, otherwise!

    2. I’ve just listened to the UK seven-inch of Hope in a Hopeless World and it doesn’t sound ‘radically different’ to me. In fact it sounds identical to the version on this compilation. I’d be interested in understanding further what version you are referring to…?

    I don’t think they are lost, no. The 4.59 version of Come Back And Stay wasn’t actually taken from the LP master tapes though, it was on some other tape. I’m sure No Parlez could be recreated with ‘proper’ versions, but I’m not sure whether that is likely to happen. And of course people that bought the original cassette of No Parlez think ‘their’ version is the ‘proper’ one!

  74. Has Sony “lost” the master tapes to the original ‘No Parlez’ LP? I recall something from when they re-released it on CD several years back and it appeared to contain extended versions/remixes rather than the original track versions and somebody from Sony saying that the original master tape had been lost or misplaced.

    Clearly while compiling this box set you’ve located the 4:59 version of ‘Come Back and Stay’ – does this mean that other original versions have been located and a ‘proper’ CD release of ‘No Parlez’ can be released at some stage?

Excellent work, Paul – great to see a box set that assumes hardcore fans already own the albums and concentrates on giving them things they don’t have, rather than selling them another copy of stuff they already own with one or two extras. Other labels could learn a lot from the way this is presented as a highly desirable 4 CD set, not an expensive 8 disk one with duplicates of the albums, or a series of 4 2CD issues where sales would drop off after the first two. Well done!

Alison Moyet is definitely one of those 80’s acts that is in great need of rare material being released. I got all her 12″ versions in my iTunes from various (dubious) sources. A proper release would go a long way. I saw her in concert last year here in NYC and her voice is still amazing as ever.

    Its a good price as well. If sets like this are priced at the right amount to begin with, more people are likely to buy them at the time of release, rather than waiting for them to drop in price. Sometimes the prices of these sets are excessive in relation to the amount of content, eg. the Lloyd Cole box set, it is more than double the price of this. Even accounting for the DVD it shouldn’t be more than £30. Who makes the decision on the initial price?

    1. Good question about pricing… Sony do seem to put out some very competitive sets (Michael Jackson’s Bad25, Manic Street Preachers 3-disc reissues etc.) and I’m not just saying that because I’m been working with them on this Paul Young collection :)

  98. Wow. This is how all the best 80s acts should be treated.

    The only downside is that the pack shot suggests it’s one of those sets where the discs are placed on top of each other with a springed clip holding and releasing them. The Elvis boxsets, and Scared To Get Happy, were the same and proved an absolute nightmare!

    Is it too late to change that design?

    1. Thanks Eric. Yes, too late because these are already being manufactured! I agree it can sometimes be fiddly, although designs do vary a bit. Overall though I really like these kinds of booksets that Sony put out, they do have a ‘quality’ feel to them.

      1. Ah well! Yes sometimes you do get lucky; I picked up the “Dolly” 4CD set in this style not long ago – first copy shattered inside and discs marked, second copy was fine and the mechanism wasn’t too fiddly. I am a fan of this book style in all other aspects, they feel sturdy and look better on the shelf!

  101. WOW is all I can say. Very very impressed, Paul!! Okay, I won’t be among the buyers – I have all the Paul Young I want, including the brilliant Remixes and Rarities set.

    But it’s just rare to see a compilation so expertly done, with so much love and care. Makes me wish you got access to a whole lot more vaults. Tina Turner perhaps? The remixes from her “Break Every Rule” album are mostly unreleased and mostly exquisite. But I don’t think she was on Sony. o_O

    On another note, “The Crossing” is a criminally overlooked gem.

    Noticed that the cover of Joy Division album track is not listed.
    Q1. Can you confirm that there are two versions available, album version and single edit?
    Q2. The reason for the exclusion as I feel Love Will Tear Us Apart is a key track in No Parlez.

    1. The ‘long’ version was on Remixes and Rarities (5.01 off the top of my head). The shorter version 4.23, I think, has been on most recent CD versions of No Parlez. Can’t include everything :)

    2. Yes Paul, within a year you can bug SONY for a Sade compilation similar to the Tomb of Memories, because it will seeeeeelllllllll.
