EMI has announced the release of a 40th anniversary edition of Thick As A Brick, the hugely successful 1972 album by Jethro Tull.

The two-disc (CD+DVD)  reissue will feature a new 2012 stereo mix, (mixed by Steven Wilson), plus a DVD containing DTS & Dolby Digital 5.1 surround mixes and a high resolution stereo (96/24) version of the new mix, alongside a hi-res flat transfer of the original 1972 mix. The only bonus track is a 1972 radio ad. A hi-res surround mix is notable by its absence.

This set comes with a small (7 ½”x 5 ½”) 104 page hardback book, which includes the original newspaper over 40 pages, an article about the album and rare photos.

A two-LP set will also be available combining the original Thick As A Brick 2012 mix, and Ian Anderson’s recent Thick As A Brick 2, both as 180gm audiophile pressings and available for the first time in vinyl . The package also has a 72-page 12 x 12″ book all held in a hard card slipcase.

Both formats due out on 5 November 2012.

  1. Not good, just received notification form Ian Anderson, Emi, Steve Wilson that there are 3 glitches on the 5.1 surround sound dvd, both from the UK & The States, Drebbus, this is what Ian has said. “We Have been alerted to the fact that there are 3 small audio glitches on the 5.1 surround sound streams. We are working on resolving the issue asap. Any new stock going into the stores will be amended for the fans who have already purchased the set, and we will be making available a replacement dvd, this occurred in the very final stages of mastering prior to the manufacture of the commercial run and was not noticed until attentive early purchases spotted the error, with our apologies.
So hopefully we will be fine soon.

  2. From a reviewer at the Amazon website, and I have heard these as well, “there is a production defect with the 5.1 DVD. At times 2:32, 2:48 & 3:03 of “Side 1″ there is audio defect.” Is anyone else hearing these weird glitches as well?

  3. After buying the huge out of this world “Aqualung” box set, can’t wait for this special edition, although i have the 25th Anniversary set, this one will sound awesome, if there is a minor complaint would love to have had a choice similar to “Aqualung” dvd/bd. I know this would have been rare, a live version of T.A.A.B would have been the ultimate “extra”. A fan actually wrote in and asked Ian about a supposedly 1 hour version, and with Ian’s sense of humour we could imagine his reply hmmmm, I’ll take it though.

  4. This is going to be sensational. I cannot wait to see what SW has done with the 5.1 mix of this. Blu-ray would be good too, but it’s consistent with the TAAB2 CD/DVD release.
