SDE reissue preview for 2020

For the sixth consecutive year, SDE takes the hand of the spirit of Reissues-Yet-To-Come for a peak into the future. We’ll examine what the next 12 months might offer for the discerning consumer we like to call ‘the SDE reader’. Album reissues, box sets, deluxe editions… you name it. 

What follows covers both confirmed releases for the early part of 2020 and then some good old fashioned speculation and conjecture – a look at what is likely to happen or what could happen later on. Enjoy!

If you look at the list below it’s not a bad start to the year. The really big box is the delayed Depeche Mode 18CD effort and Supergrass, which has had mixed feedback thus far mainly because not only does it mix CDs and vinyl (13 CDs + 6 vinyl LPs) but the vinyl records are picture discs, rendering them slightly useless if you want to play them for audio fidelity purposes. A new Pet Shop Boys album is always something to look forward to and it’s great to see Neneh Cherry‘s Raw Like Sushi being reissued, although it’s arguably overpriced (particularly the 3CD set).

We already know that Simple Minds Street Fighting Years box is happening, because the band have told us. The release date hasn’t been confirmed by it should be issued in February. George Michael‘s Symphonica vinyl reissue is not officially confirmed but seems legit and is the kind of thing the his estate would approve and is also a relatively easy thing for the label to reproduce. Expect some more Bruce Springsteen vinyl reissues in this month, and indeed you can already pre-order a 2LP version of The Rising on Amazon in the USA.

Good to see another Alan Parsons Project reissue which like previous sets includes a 5.1 surround mix on a blu-ray in the box.

APRIL 2019 & BEYOND

Roachford will release a new album Twice in a Lifetime (signed CDs available via Amazon UK) and The The will release their Tim Pope-directed ‘comeback’ concert which was filmed at the Royal Albert Hall in 2018 (I was there and you can read the SDE review).

The Manic Street Preachers look like they will finally reissue their second album Gold Against The Soul, judging by this instagram post from last December and Duran Duran will release a new album this year, five years after Paper Gods. They’ve been working with Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, so it could be interesting, although I admit my natural state with an impending DD album is fear rather than excitement. What this all but guarantees is that they’ll be no Duran reissues in 2020. There can’t get around to doing it when they have no new record out (the last four years) then how are they going to find the time when they are promoting a new long-player? I’m not normally one to say this, but you do wonder why they bother. Maybe they need to adopt the a-ha mentality of combining interesting touring formats (playing whole albums) and celebrating the past.

Let’s discuss the elephant in the room: Tears For Fears. We were hoping that the Seeds of Love reissue would come out last year, but sadly that wasn’t to be. We don’t know what the situation with the ‘new album’ is either, but I can tell you that there will definitely be ‘reissue activity’ in 2020. Patience should be rewarded, finally.

With 2019 being a non-Archive Collection release year for Paul McCartney, the series will continue this year. While most fans want either London Town and/or Back to the Egg reissued (which would neatly conclude the reissues of Paul’s 1970s/Wings era) it’s looking highly likely that Flaming Pie is next, with July touted as the release date. There’s an outside chance more could follow later in the year but it’s not probable. Paul has reissued two albums in a year on four separate occasions (McCartney I & II, Venus & Mars & At The Speed of Sound, Tug of War & Pipes of Peace and Wild Life & Red Rose Speedway) but on each occasion these were issued together. There has never been two separate reissue campaigns in one 12-month period. Having said that, we could well get some more coloured vinyl reissues of other albums.

The Beatles‘ Let It Be film is being reissued in 2020. Peter Jackson has been working on a new version for Apple (which in all likelihood won’t be called Let It Be) but the original will also be restored as part of this process. It seems all but an inevitability that Universal will want to re-release the album for its 50th anniversary, but unlike the last three reissues (Sgt. Pepper, The White Album & Abbey Road) Let It Be has already been reissued, when Let It Be Naked was released in 2003 (complete with Fly On The Wall bonus disc). Paul, Ringo, Olivia and Yoko may not be inclined to dig back into the archives again for this rather unhappy period, although perhaps they can be persuaded. Certainly a surround sound mix is highly likely, given that one will be created anyway, for the film.

Roger Waters said unequivocally in a radio interview in 2018 that Pink Floyd‘s Animals had been mixed for 5.1 for a reissue and even went into specifics of how Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell had new photos of Battersea Power Station for the cover. I think there’s a decent chance that this will see the light of day sometime in the next 12 months. In the meantime Analogue Productions are issuing an SACD version of The Dark Side of the Moon. This is this features the same surround mix as the one in the 2011 Immersion box set and will be packaged like the Wish You Were Here SACD (available via Acoustic Sounds).

Last year we enjoyed the excellent David Bowie Conversation Piece box set, with Parlophone taking a break from the ‘era’ multi-album box sets. I’d love them to continue with the Conversation Piece approach (perhaps cover The Man Who Sold The World/Hunky Dory years), but I think it’s more likely that we’ll be back to the big box sets. Clearly we are now ‘in’ the 1990s which saw Bowie return to a more creative (rather than commercial) mindset with excellent albums like The Buddha of Suburbia, Black Tie White Noise and Outside (to name but three). The question will be whether Tin Machine will be treated separately or not.

2019 was a great year for Prince fans with the wonderful 1999 reissue (which was SDE’s best box of the year). The reissue programme continues and another major album and sizeable box set should appear later this year.

Steven Wilson will issue his sixth studio album in 2020 with tour dates already in place in the autumn and Peter Gabriel‘s Rated PG album (issued as a vinyl picture disc for RSD 2019) is coming to CD this year, although what we really want is the Flotsam and Jetsam B-side/rarities collection issued physically.

The Doors‘ Morrison Hotel is 50 years old in February so there’s a decent chance Rhino will follow up preview reissues (like last year’s Soft Parade) with an anniversary edition of this album and I’d like to see Jethro Tull‘s Benefit (also 50 in 2020) reissued again in the ‘book’ format that has worked so well in recent years. Also if Sting has a quiet solo year and all parties can agreed, it would be nice to finally see a Police box set issued with unreleased material, and will Universal Music managed to actually issue the Blondie Complete Studio Recordings.

Howard Jones‘ reissue programme will definitely continue with Cherry Red planning on releasing a remastered and expanded version of his fourth album Cross That Line in June. It’s a great record, co-produced by the Tears For Fears’ ‘backroom boys’ Chris Hughes, Ross Cullum and Ian Stanley.

Kate Bush hasn’t issued a new studio album for eight years (the second longest gap in her career) so it would be great to see something new emerge in 2020, although only a fool would try and predict it. A new ‘best of’ is long overdue (just the 34 years since the last) but one imagines that Kate probably feels like she’s revisited the past more than enough in recent times with those welcome – but flawed – box sets of 2018. Hounds of Love is 35 this year and what would we give for a Marillion/Jethro Tull style five-disc reissue with a Steven Wilson 5.1 mix!!?

There were rumours of a Madonna Like A Prayer reissue late last year (with listings on some European websites to support it). We all know that Madonna has shunned reissues thus far and is busy touring her new album, so I’m not totally convinced, but it’s a fantastic album and I’d certainly love to see this expanded properly.

Eurythmics‘ Be Yourself Tonight is 35 years old in 2020 and if Sony, Dave and Annie could all get on the same page and sign off on it, this album wouldn’t be a bad place to start some expanded reissues, since it includes more UK top 20 hits than any of their other albums and of course it includes their only British number one (‘There Must Be An Angel (Playing with my Heart)’) as well as the US top five hit ‘Would I Lie To You?’

There will inevitably be plenty of releases that will come as if from nowhere, to surprise, delight (and maybe disappoint) us along the way. That’s part of the fun.   1. Well we’re nearly ten months into the year and no sign of new material from Kate Bush. Eight years will soon become nine since 50 Words For Snow, but you know what, the gap doesn’t feel anything like as long as the wait for Hounds Of Love after The Dreaming. Life flies by ten times quicker now than when I was a teenager. It’d still be a brilliant surprise to hear the news that a new album is about to be released. It’s good to dream.

  2. I dare to dream now but how about a super deluxe edition box with all the frills for fans of the goddess Ofra Haza, who unfortunately died too early?
    I know that with all the copyrights and blah blah it is not easy but somehow the Israeli record companies sleep but the interest of the fans is “still” there.
    I think it’s super sad that not even here in Germany anything moves in this regard. Teldec and Eastwest no longer exist and Hed-Arzi in Israel has vanished after all these years. “Shaday” her hit album was like a bomb in Europe and “Kirya” the third album was even nominated with a Grammy.
    It would be bad if this woman with a grandiose voice is no longer honored with a project and is forgotten.

  3. As a fan and collector, I am very enthusiastic about your expanded and remastered editions by Kylie Minogue and Kim Wilde. It would make many happy if one of your next projects were “Impossible Princess” and “Kylie Minogue ’94”. As far as I know, the first album mentioned above has never been released on LP. The “KM” from 94 as a double LP was a gift for us fans but what about both albums as deluxe boxes? With all the frills like posters, DVD, remixes … A big dream!!!

    The Now team will be doing those early “Now” 2CD reissues from the ’80s up to #10.

  8. Not an SDE as such but I notice that Amazon in Germany have listed a vinyl reissue of the 1985 ‘Sun City’ album (various artists), slated for March.

  9. Strong rumours of a retrospective U2 career box set in the pipeline U2X their current contract with Live nation finishes in March and they have apparently signed a new 10 year contract to cover tours, new releases and this box set which ties into their newly launched U2 channel on sirius.

  11. Look forward to ‘Flaming Pie’ as it’s one of Paul’s best. But yes would sooner have ‘Back to the Egg’ and ‘London Town’ or even ‘Press to Play’ and ‘Give My Regards to Broadstreet’
    The online rumour mill seems to indicate that further activity with Prefab Sprout CD reissues seems to have ground to a halt and all is quiet on the new Sprouts opus too. If the signs are true that these are all cancelled then it’s a big shame.

  12. Blank & Jones from So80s announced they are working on a deconstruction mix (as they did with Frankie Goes To Hollywood) of one of their favorite 80’s songs. The artist is involved as well but they won’t release the name yet. For now it seems to be just a song and not an entire album but who knows. If anyone has any details, pls share. Blank & Jones are top quality so this will be something to look forward to.

  14. Bought all Prince titles (albums and reissues) released after his death. Really loved Piano & A Microphone, Originals and 1999 Deluxe 10lp so I’m very curious what 2020 will bring.
    Can’t wait!

    40th anniversary boxes of Scary Monsters, Uprising and More Specials (with period live recordings as most official live stuff is from 1st album period)

    Singles Box sets from Adam and The Ants and Madness (both of which seem no brainers to me) and McCartney doing the same as the Who and reissuing his singles in several volumes.
    I would also echo calls for London Town/Back To The Egg and hope that a McCartney vol 1 vinyl box emerges that has been banded about previously.
    Similarly, a Beatles EP box set would be most welcome to accompany the LP and 7” box sets.

  16. I don’t think the next Bowie box will go as far as Outside, I’m thinking ‘89-‘94 (Tin Machine, Tin Machine II, Black Tie White Noise & Buddha of Suburbia) with Sound + Vision Tokyo thrown in.

    We’ll probably get unreleased 1970 recordings to satisfy copyright and 50th anniversary singles boxes, but they might wait with the Conversation Piece style CD box set and bundle it with early 1971 material in 2021. As there probably won’t be two large box sets in one year.

  17. There will definitely be some Jam, TSC or Weller action this summer apart from his new album. There’s going to be a massive exhibition in mods spiritual home of Brighton (in a marquee by the marina, apparently) in the summer months. Permission has been given by Brighton Council sometime ago.

    I’d love to see Paul Weller Classic Albums Vol.2, a deluxe Cafe Bleu?

    I’d also like to see a who sell out box, the scritti releases, a proper Dexy’s box set with rarities and dvd?

    I’d also like the beatles let it be anniversary and the new film to be handled separate, would be great if we did get a remastered cleaned up ‘let it be’ film and soundtrack? unlikely I know.

  18. As sure as eggs is eggs, R.E.M. will reissue New Adventures around November 2020. Work is underway as you would expect given that Monster and NAIHF are closely related.

It’s just that both entered UK Albums Chart at the beginning of 1970 so I listed them as the albums from 1970. Just correct me if I’m (a little) wrong, please. Thanks!

I would love to see the Chris Rea campaign continue with either the Early Years (1974-1984, first 6 albums) or Later Years (1992-2000, final albums for Magnet, up to 2000’s “King Of The Beach”)…5 tracks were missing from “New Light Through Old Windows”, and some live bonus tracks from “Auberge” were actually B-sides from singles from the follow-up, 1992’s “God’s Great Banana Skin”, so for me, it looks like a sign of what’s to come, as well as lots more extra material & B-sides out there to be properly organized…besides that, been writing down the ideas here & going over my collection to think of more…loving this topic…makes it fun discussing music really…but yes, please, bring on the “Seeds Of Love” box this year…please Universal??

  28. In 2020 I would like to see (hear) expanded and remastered editions of:

    The Cure “Wish” – with b-sides (they did some of their best in this era), lost wishes plus more.
    All About Eve – “Touched by Jesus” – their forgotten and underrated third album which included guest appearance by Dave Gilmour on some tracks. They did some great b-sides too, “All the rings round Saturn” etc.
    The House of Love – Their debut on Creation have been reissued two or maybe three times already but I would love to see all albums they did on Fontana label. The b-sidecollection “A Spy in the House of Love” is brilliant but out of print since a long time back. They did more songs that period which was spread on a lot of various formats, double cd-singles, different 7″ etc etc. Why not a big Box set – The House of Love “The Fontana Years” 1989-1993.
    Whats’s more? Maybe some remastered classics from SPK, Chris & Cosey…

    The last one is practically being given away by Amazon here in Australia.
    Yesterday the 11cd box reached a new low of AU$19.99 (about US$14) and the vinyl box got as low as AU$34.99 in early December.

  34. Query: does anyone know as to what reason(s) Pink Floyd’s The Wall has not been remixed/released in 5.1 surround? Got the immersion box set and it only contains hi fidelity stero mixes. And yet, as i understand from SDE, there will be a 5.1 version of Animals soon.
    Is there anybody out there?

    1. Hi Chaz, I’m sure that the hard core PF fans will wade in on this question but I believe that it’s all down to the condition and piecing together of the original multi-tracks. I’d really love to see this one come out too!

There is a standalone box set for ‘The Wall’ that didn’t include the 5.1, so the only other option when you consider that the last two releases from Pink Floyd have been huge era-spanning box sets, is for the 5.1 mix of both ‘Animals’, ‘The Wall’ and anything else to be collected from that era in a huge ‘Middle Years’ (or ‘Meddle’ Years) box set.

          The immersion sets were released a long time ago now and these huge box sets are what is being focused on. It also makes financial sense: the most popular period of Pink Floyd all collected together, so if you just want Animals 5.1, or The Wall 5.1, you will have to get the box, at least until they open them up like the Early Years sets.

  35. There is a new Morrissey album being released in March along with repackaging of some of his later albums.

    He also released a blue 7 inch single “It’s Over” just before Xmas. Appears to be like those recent Kate Bush 12 inch singles – only available via HMV in the UK. Didn’t know anything about it until yesterday. I’m on his mailing list and there was nothing from them about it. Not even available on HMV online. Was in HMV a few times recently and would have got one if I’d known about it. Seems to be sold out. It’s available to pre order from JPC so have pre ordered one from them.

  37. I imagine Roger Waters will release a Blu-ray/CD set of his “Us+Them” gig in the Netherlands that was screened around the world in cinemas last year.

  38. “ TFF re-issue activity” probably will mean a stand-alone release of the 5.1 version of Seeds (on blu-ray?) and a proper DVD release of the original LD of the California concert. Because the Seeds album lacked any 12” mixes like the former albums, there’s probably too little music to build a box. Maybe the band doesn’t want all demo and early versions out on the street whilst having little to do with the final album anyway. Time will tell.

      1. Although not necessarily part of the box sets, TFF live has been pretty under-represented on record so far. I burned my own CD version of “In My Mind’s Eye” (ripped from the DVD) and thankfully got a Laserdisc rip of “Going to California” from a friend – both are epic live albums! Add to that the stunning live bootlegs of the Curt-less 1996 tour…

        The only official live album “Secret World” from 2005 doesn’t even begin to do this band justice, believe me.

      2. Why not a completist box set around Tears for Fears’ entire output? This way, all the albums will be nicely represented, along with rare live material!

Those Julian Cope & Teardrop Explodes big box-sets that have been talked about for a few years now (9 x CDs for TX, 13 for JC solo IIRC) must be high on the list… he’s promoting a new-new album at the moment though, so if these happen at all I can’t see it happening until the latter half of the year…

  40. I’m really surprised to see no mention of Led Zeppelin in such a long list of interesting genre spanning comments! At least I didn’t see any.

    So I’ll mention them. Zeppelin fans didn’t receive what they had patiently waited and hoped for in 2019. It would be great to see that long-promised archival live release hit the streets. Jimmy Page did once consider a ‘How The East Was Won’ set but I believe that it was discounted due to it’s similarities to the 1972 ‘West’ set released in 2003. I think that Southampton ’73 was also considered at one point but Plant wasn’t in best of shapes at that gig. Jimmy gave an interview to Planet Rock magazine in 2018 and said that there was a multi-track recording that would be released. He said that it would be very different to all the other LZ live releases. He also stated that there were plans to continue releasing live Led Zeppelin material over a 10 year period. I wonder what’s blocking the pipe?

    I know that we’re a year late but I’d also like to see the release of a Queen ‘Live Killers’ box set this year (prioritised over The Miracle box set that has been rumoured recently!). Queen were at their hottest in ’79, as illustrated by their incredible Hammersmith ’79 show which has long deserved an official release.

    Also what happened to the scritti reissues, they were due to come out on vinyl? Would be nice for a set that includes all the mixes like the paul young etc sets?

  42. Clannad, who celebrate their 50th anniversary this year, have been in the studio with Trevor Horn to record a cover of Fairport Convention‘s ‘Who Knows Where The Time Goes’. The track is one of two new songs which will feature on their new In A Lifetime 2 CD/ 2 LP Deluxe Anthology, and there will also be a Deluxe Set (4CD + 2LP + LP + 7” Single + 1CD + Book + Postcards + Poster). The band will embark on their Farewell Tour starting in February 2020.

  43. I suppose if I have ONE wish regarding music re-releases in 2020, it’s that the BBC open the vaults and allow more of the gigs they have recorded over the years to see the light of day.

    They are sitting on (tens of?) thousands of hours or In Concert recordings going back *decades* and it is a travesty that theses are rarely (if ever) heard.

    There were a few concerts released on IIRC the Windsong label in the 90s, and I recall a select few being uploaded to iTunes a while back – but 99.99% of the recordings remain ‘in the can’.

    I think you should start a campaign, Paul, to get some more classic BBC recordings released!

  48. Madonna re-issues would be most welcome and I would love to see the Blondie box released.

    Looking forward to more Prince this year. I would also love to see the Diana Ross 1989-1999 albums reissued (there have been rumors about that). She also has a new album out this year. I hope there will be more deluxe editions of the Supremes albums along with Diana´s 1978 album. These have been talked about and are supposedly ready but have been delayed. Hopefully they won’t end up as some digital only releases.

    Janet Jackson deluxe CDs would be great, as well as Kim Wilde´s 90s album, Grace Jones Living My Life and Bananarama´s Ultra Violet. Further Roxette releases would be nice, following the recent deluxe version of Look Sharp.

    I would also jump on proper remasters of Sandra´s albums. I already have all the CD singles etc but deluxe editions would be great. Still I would be happy with just the original albums remastered. Same goes for Amanda Lear´s early catalog, with some of her albums completely unavailable on CD.

    Kyllie Minogue´s Impossible Princess, Body Language and X on vinyl would also be nice, as well as Ultimate Kylie. None of these have ever had a vinyl release.

    As mentioned, a definitive Kate Bush best of is also long overdue.

  49. One obvious one would of course be a deluxe & expanded 20th anniversary for Radiohead’s Kid A. The band spoke of working on it back around the time they released the Ok Not Ok box set. I would be very surprised if it didn’t come out this year.

    I have high hopes for the Prince release, while I’m reserved about whatever the Bowie estate releases next. And I hope a new The The release will inspire confidence to release even more material..

    1. I think it was either Thom Yorke or Nigel Godrich said last year that there is literally ten times more recorded stuff than all of the OKC boxset and the leaked MiniDiscs (and that stuff was compiled also, before getting whittled down for the OKC boxset Cassette) put together, so the Kid A/Amnesiac (same sessions) boxset should be pretty special.

  50. Again, I must hold out hope for an expanded box set around the Who’s A QUICK ONE…, similar to the MY GENERATION package, with mono and stereo versions and differences in the way the album was compiled in the U.K. and America, along with B-sides and rareties, even though the MAXIMUM A’s and B’s has already happened…or the same could be said of SELL OUT, with its many configurations from mono to stereo to stunning remix to “complete” “Rael”.

    In the “I can dream” department, I’d love to see a box set of all the Genesis albums, including live albums, clam-shelled with original mixes, e.p. and rare B-sides, etc., just so I can finally have quality on those recordings…and wouldn’t it be nice to have *ALL* the Rolling Stones’ ABCO albums given to us with mono and stereo mixes for everything, including the stuff that was never introduced in stereo? The Beatles got that treatment, so why not the Stones? I would love a reissue of XTC’s BIG EXPRESS, perhaps even in rounded container? If not that, at least as good as the previous deluxe sets…or, if ENGLISH SETTLEMENT is a bust because of missing sources for some of the tracks, just a very good remastered box of all the albums, clam-shelled in mini-LP sleeves, similar to the Japanese editions years ago but with original mixes and sound quality as good as can be expected from what still exists of good sources…I would say the same about a Traffic box set of all the original albums including LAST EXIT which, as far as I know, never saw reissue.

    And I’ll echo an earlier desire for a complete collection set around Humble Pie or the Bonzo Doodah Dog Band. The same goes for 10CC.

    And, although I see something new expected from guitarist Pat Metheny in February, I’d love to see his earlier work collected and even expanded if enough good material exists from sessions in a large box similar to the fantastic Billy Cobham set a while back. In fact there really should also be an ECM Records collection in the future, collecting some of the finest sides found on that label in those early years, like Gary Burton’s TIMES SQUARE or Eberhard Weber’s THE FOLLOWING MORNING, both of which have never found official CD releases.

    And, oh, would I enjoy an extensive Roches reissue campaign. Their body of work has too long been too hard to find these days. And I hope that the B52’s reissues continue, beginning with the very first two albums on up through WHAMMY. Perhaps there are great live shows from those early times?

    I liked the first clam-shelled set of Judy Collins albums; I hope that continues with the next seven or eight albums and on and on.

For any of the SDE readers who have a longing for some classic Yacht Rock reissues there is word that Christopher Cross will sometime soon announce a career-spanning box set to be released this year. Although 2020 is essentially the 40th anniversary of his Grammy-winning self-titled debut album (it was technically released in late December 1979) he supposedly is more interested in doing the box set rather than an anniversary edition of his most well-known and successful record.

  58. I would love to see super deluxe box sets of all of Tina Turner’s output in the year or future! This woman is a ICON and has been there and back and isn’t in the best of health, but hangs in there! That recent Private Dancer album rerelease was sad and God awful. Now we are upon the anniversary of Break Every Rule! The companies will do a zillion box sets on other artists like The Beatles, Bowie, Prince, etc, time and time again but overlook the obvious. What a joy it would to see a Tina Turner box set just like the recent brilliant Chris Cornell super deluxe box set which included all his cd’s, dvd, vinyl output. It was a massive hit. And two snaps to Soul Music website for the upcoming box set release of all of Dionne Warwicks output for Arista which will contain a few that have never been rereleased in any form. I’m so looking forward to that one. And will we ever see the light of day of any sort of release treatment for the group Tamara And The Seen’s 1985 self titled album and the follow up Blueberry Gossip? I look at some of the obscure groups and singers that Cherry Red will release for example and scratch my head but yet Tamara And The Seen get, year after year, forgotten! Time to rip open those vaults and explore all the bands Minneapolis associated!

    1. I think they need to take another run at Private Dancer. I agree, considering Turner’s unequalled stature and the explosive resurgence she achieved with that album (and the Mad Max singles and other collaborations which both chronologically and stylistically belong with it), that package needs to be done right sooner rather than later. That last one was now five years ago. Four discs, all the mixes.

    If there’s any power pop fans out there, I’d like to mention that, according to an interview I read on Magnet magazine web site, Cherry Red will reissue, this winter, in a box set and with the usual outtakes, demos, live cuts, etc., the three Elektra albums the Shoes released from 1979 to 1982 ( “Present Tense”, “Tongue Twister” & “Boomerang”). No precise date was mentionned, but it seems pretty official. After all, Cherry Red has already released the “Black Vinyl Shoes” box set in 2018.
    I respectfully disagree with you about “Let It Be”. “Let It Be… Naked” was a kind of standalone project (McCartney’s revenge on Phil Spector, if you want). In fact, it was more of an “alternative version” of the album than a straight reissue. The order of the songs was not the same. It included “Don’t Let Me Down” (different take than the one on the Let It Be single b-side). “Dig It” and “Maggie Mae” were skipped. Different takes of “Long and Winding Road” and “Across The Universe” were used, etc. So, in my humble opinion, it would only be logical to see it released as the next step in the Sgt Peppers/White Album/Abbey Road SDE series. I, for one, would love to hear the rooftop concert in its entirety, properly remastered and/or remixed.
    My dream reissues for 2020 would be Elliot Murphy’s “Aquashow” and the entire Sir Douglas Quintet/DougSahm catalogue. But I’m not crazy: I know there’s zero chance.

  63. It’s possible that Universal will issue some ZTT/Perfect Songs material now that the UK licence has reverted to Universal after a decade with BMG Rights.

    Most of the albums on streaming platforms are now standard editions with many former ‘deluxe edition’ tracks no longer available.

  64. There is a reissue on vinyl of Electronic’s (Sumner & Marr) debut coming out on the 24th of this month on heavyweight vinyl.

    I’ll chip in for greedily accepting another Prince resissue in the caliber of the recent 1999 boxset in either Parade or SOTT.

    A couple of people mentioned both The Divine Comedy and (the continuing of ) The Smashing Pumpkins reissues -Neil Hannon has been mentioning them for over a decade now, and I can remember reading that he had all the original artwork material etc from Setanta to do it, but it seems the stumbling block is Neil’s seemingly reluctance on them possibly not selling, but if it costs over £100 to score a 2nd hand vinyl copy of Fin De Siècle, I would happily pay £30+ for a deluxe version with b-sides and demos of just that album (already have the Promo with the original La Dolca Vita samples), doubly so for remastered versions of Liberation, Promenade, Casanova etc.

    As for the The Smashing Pumpkins reissues continuing, I can remember reading Billy Corgan saying that they had been put on hold due to the Aeroplane Flies High and Adore sets not selling very well compared to the previous ones, but I think he has been mentioning recently that they are back on the schedule -and i would happily snap up the long promised Machina/Machina II set -they really shoud’ve released Machina II properly at the time.

    1. Electronic’s debut album needs a proper reissue on CD with all original bonus material. The last 2 CD release had tracks from different albums, new custom edits etc.

  65. There is a ton of great discussion in the primary posting and from all of the comments. It is nice to hear updates and to see the “wish list”. Many of you mentioned albums that didn’t cross my mind, but are now on my list!

    I would personally love to see an expanded edition of Janet Jackson “Control”, but the issue with the master tapes may throw a wrench in that idea. Jody Watley’s self-titled release also is way overdue for a remaster and expanded edition. Many singles from that release were never released on CD. And finally, I wouldn’t hate to get a Paula Abdul “Forever Your Girl” release. A lot of singles from that release as well are hard to find on CD and the quality is not so hot..

  67. Some random thoughts & hopes from the rockier end of the spectrum…

    As Angus says, it would be interesting to see if Transistor can extend the UFO 3CD reissues beyond “Phenomenon”. The Chrysalis Years box sets of a few years ago had an amount of additional material with each album, so perhaps there’s not much more available?

    The Rush 40th anniversary reissues have been a spectacular miss for me despite them being my favourite band ever – I cannot think of anything I would less want to hear in a Rush reissue than another artist – ANY other artist – covering Rush. Rush are another band who didn’t really record anything more than they released, so I won’t be holding my breath for the “Permanent Waves” 40th anniversary reissue.

    It’s also the 40th anniversary this year of, perhaps, the best year of the New Wave Of British Heavy Metal – so many classic NWOBHM albums were released in 1980…

    Tony Iommi has been remixing Black Sabbath’s (least popular) album “Forbidden” for a couple of years now. Surely that must be ready for release in 2o20? And then perhaps they can look at the other Tony Martin-era Sabbath albums, as everything else except these was reissued as 2CD deluxe editions ten years ago now?

    And I’d love for the rest of the Rainbow albums to get the DE treatment – they did “Rising”, “Long Live Rock’n’Roll”, “On Stage” and “Down To Earth” a few years back, that just leaves “Ritchie Blackmore’s Rainbow” and the three Joe Lynn Turner-era albums to do.

    What can they possibly do to make anybody want to buy the first four Marillion abums yet again..?

    Finally, Saxon haven’t issued a box set for, ooh, several weeks now, must be time to re-release those first few albums again somehow, or the 90s albums that nobody bought at the time…

      That is one of my biggest reissue wishes as well. Cabaret Voltaire’s 1987 – 1991 Parlophone/EMI period should be reissued with audio and promo video footage in as the same way as it was the Virgin one back in 2013. Albums “Code” (1987) and “Groovy, Laidback And Nasty” (1990) deserved that.

      Also would like to see deluxe reissues of Kim Wilde’s “Love Moves” (1990) and “Love Is.” (1992) albums as well as a DVD with all the videos which is long overdue.
      The DVD was announced in one radio interview by Kim Wilde herself back in 2015 and nothing has happened since then.
      Speaking of Kim Wilde, a new “greatest hits” compilation has been announced for the end of this year. Hopefully it will be backed with a promo video DVD.

I disagree that we already sort of have a “Let It Be” box in “LIB Naked.” Naked was mostly a project to make Paul happy since he just can let it go that Phil Spector added the “wall of sound” to “The Long and Winding Road,” “Let it Be” and “Across the Universe.” I like having the Naked version, but the Spector version is most assuredly better. The rub, though, is that there isn’t much to it (the Naked set). So, yes, we need a LIB audio box since there is such a wealth of material to cull from……..

    Also, I wish Rhino would complete the Monkees box set and release “Headquarters”, “Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones”, and “Changes.”

Given that this year is the “official” 40th anniversary of the band Duran Duran, I’m holding out hope that we will actually see something this year – perhaps the most discussed super deluxe reissue of The Wedding Album. Yes, I know that they have a new album coming out this year, but who’s to say that they haven’t been going back and forth with someone who is working on the reissue?

  84. I would like to see:

    1, U2 “Pop” reissue. Really thought we would have had this in 2017 for the 20th anniversary, not “The Joshua Tree” AGAIN albeit with different content. They could do the different take on the album they hinted at, b-sides, remixes, a concert ( Edmonton or Rotterdam were recorded for sure – anything but Mexico City ) the National Geographic special on the logistics of the tour & that 1st of its kind at the time Popmart screen & a documentary on the whole period would be brilliant.
    2, Latter period Roxy & Mr Ferry’s 80’s & 90’s output inc the elusive “Horoscope” sessions / album. More chance of seeing Unicorn shit though in all reality.
    3, Duran Duran “Wedding album” boxset. Hilarious thought I know.
    4, Prince “Parade” box , same style as the 1999 set. Does anyone know the rhyme or reason to what gets chosen to be released next? Acres of potential content for this inc hopefully Audio & Visual of the London gigs from the summer of 1986.
    5, Goldfrapp “Felt Mountain”. A breathtaking album with hopefully live audio & visual of the forthcoming gigs & a documentary.
    6, At last, Simple Minds “Street fighting years”. If you’re gonna buy this “Let me see those hands…”

  86. A couple I forgot to mention, but others have reminded me of:

    Ramones. Despite reservations on pricing – once again because of the included Vinyl – I have found myself owning each of the last five sets. They’re really nice, albeit light in the booklet department. I’d like to say I’ll hold off buying a 6th due to the Vinyl and pricing, but as history shows, I’d be in. LOL

    Peter Gabriel. Sure would be nice to see something done with the first four albums. They were easily his best and most interesting period (IMO) and putting together a 2 or 3 disc version, including Surround, would be quite something.

    2020 needs a comprehensive audio retrospective of Clifford t ward.
    all the released vinyl plus any other stuff. (Not live stuff, do that separately, or at the very least keep it to a single separate cd)
    He spoke of English life, of Worcester, of love and of honest awful loss.
    It doesn’t seem right that “a day to myself” was almost absent from the ww1 centenary recognition.
    If anyone out there, i am confident there are loads, loves Clifford t ward and hasn’t caught up with Robinson stone band. Then do so as your pleasure.
    Family stuff prevented me from travelling to Birmingham to see their CTW tribute. It’s available online. They are very very good.

  88. Differing music tastes being what they are, that’s some thin gruel (80’s and 90’s pop isn’t my thing). There are speculative items of interest (Bowie, Tull, Animals from Floyd) but nothing concrete. You also didn’t mention the Be Bop Deluxe reissues from Cherry Red which are certain to continue in 2020, they have two studio and one live album to go before that series is complete (Axe Victim and Drastic Plastic from the studio, and Live in the Air Age as a live album). Sure would be amazing if they extended these to include Red Noise, but that’s a bit of a pipe dream.

    The Tull no-brainer is Benefit, since it’s already done, albeit in a digipac format. The real question is whether they’re going to extend the series. “A” should be up next, which isn’t a favorite, but after that there’s Broadsword and the Beast and Under Wraps, which would be amazing to see.

    Rumors are that Bowie’s Man Who Sold the World will get the Conversation Piece type release this year, and in fact they represent a series going through (and including) Aladdin Sane.

    Animals is a no brainer, but I’m hoping they go for a Immersion type format for it, in other words, give it the same treatment as their other core albums. That said, if we get an Immersion type release, that would surely put a nail in the coffin of a “Middle Years” box set – which wouldn’t be a bad thing, given the pricing on those……

    Finally I’ll mention the Alan Parsons release. Yes, it’s really good to see. However, it’s very odd they chose that one. Yes it had a “hit” on it, but surely I-Robot, Pyramid, or Turn of a Friendly Card would have better titles for the Deluxe treatment? It also begs the question – is Sony now licensing out the Parsons catalog? If so, what titles did they license? After all, the two previous Parsons boxes were put out by Sony, this new one (which sadly isn’t a great album, although tastes vary) is from Cherry Red. The newer set, now spread over two slabs of Vinyl within the set, is hitting a new high price point as well – £90 is a lot to pay for an iffy-album with Vinyl I’ll never have a use for, imo. They are selling the Blu-Ray from the set for a quarter of that price, but then of course you don’t get the box, the book, etc.

    -Homegrown.An acoustic album recorded after On The Beach but never released
    -Rust Bucket.Previously known as Catalyst this is a small venue Crazy Horse show done around the time of the release of Ragged Glory.Comes with film of show
    -Greendale 2020.Despite the name this is a recording/film of a 2003 show which featured 50 actors/singers/dancers on stage
    -Archives Volume 2.Covers up to 1976.Big box including things like Crazy Horse Live 76 album,Chrome Dreams and Time Fades Away 2.
    We might not get any of them but here’s hoping.

    Bruce Springsteen-Born In The USA/Nebraska box.The album box sets have all come out at 5 year intervals.The last one was 2015
    Bob Dylan-The 2 most likely Bootleg Series releases are The Villager-recordings from 61-63- or a Lanois themed box either just about Time Out Of Mind or also including Oh Mercy
    R.E.M.-At the announcement of the Monster box they said they were going to do a very big release for 2020 which is the 40th anniversary of the band’s formation.Physical version of those b sides/rarities box sets that were issued digitally?
    George Harrison-50th anniversary edition of All Things Must Pass using the Imagine box format would be wonderful but probably just wishful thinking.

  91. Yes, where is that long promised Siouxsie comp??….Steve Severin talked about it years ago. First it was gonna be a cd and video comp. Then I think it was just going to be a cd comp. Haven’t heard anything since. I think there was also talk of a Juju deluxe. Their catalog has long been neglected. Though the back catalog was remastered, they were average at best. And no complete 2 nights of the Nocturne shows!!!

    Another neglected artist has been the Alice Cooper Group’s 70’s output. Only Billion Dollar Babies had the deluxe treatment. How about Pretties For You/Easy Action/Love It To Death/Killer and School’s Out!!

  94. Apple/Universal will do a Let It Be deluxe. They know these reissues rake in the cash and I expect they will go into the Twickenham and Saville Row sessions. We may even get it in the original Angus McBean ‘Get Back’ cover art or the instrumentals of the Spector reworkings.

    Small Faces deluxe ‘Autumn Stone’ still hasn’t appeared. Let’s hope it finally does.

    And although it’s 30th was in 2018, let us hope U2 finally give attention to Rattle and Hum. Instead of milking the Joshua Tree for the umpteenth time.

    The Roses debut is another that has been done to death. A long overdue deluxe Second Coming would be better.

This would be the perfect opportunity for a 50th anniversary edition of JOHN LENNON / PLASTIC ONO BAND or a 40th anniversary of DOUBLE FANTASY, although we already have the Stripped Down version of Double Fantasy from the 70th birthday editions.

    I can’t see only IMAGINE getting the box set treatment, particularly when PLASTIC ONO BAND is arguably the better album.

  101. Bridge Over Troubled Water will celebrate it’s 50th anniversary this year. I would like a SDE for that album. The 40th anniversary had a live concert “live 1969” (which wasn’t something previously unreleased) and a dvd with two movies.

    Or Paul Simon will release finaly his promised Alternate Tunings album with unreleased material. A 6 song preview had the demo of Song For The Asking. His One Trick Pony album will be 40 years old. The SDE of that album would have a dvd or blu-ray with the film on it (in my dreams of course).

  103. I have heard rumours of a Ringo ‘Apple Years’ box since it is 50 years since his first solo record. There is a small market for this I am sure (I would buy it!) so if this did happen, expect remasters of Sentimental Journey, Beaucoups Of Blues, Ringo and Goodnight Vienna, plus non album singles and B-sides, unreleased stuff etc!

  107. Beyond the usual suspects (Prince, Bowie, Tull, TFF et.al.), I’d *really* like to see a 40th SDE of Peter Gabriel III (the one with Biko, Games Without Frontiers etc) – including a 5.1 surround mix of the album (blu-ray or SACD, I don’t really mind).

    Would be good also if Genesis could kick off a concert re-issue campaign, similar to what the Stones are doing. I mean they’ve got all those soundboard recordings going back decades, just sitting in storage at the Farm…….

Stuff with Ronnie Hawkins etc. This has been promised to be “almost done” so many times that I’ll believe it when I see it. But I sure would like to see it.

    The Moody Blues – was hoping for at least one of their two 1969 albums last year, but no sign. I suppose it’s possible there just isn’t enough material to expand on the bonus track versions currently available.
    Mike Oldfield – who has been silent all together in the last three years. I know he was in hospital at one point, which has worried some fans, but then his Tubular Bells IV website went offline and nothing has been heard since. Whether personal issues have stopped the campaign, whether it’s the recording of TB4 (the reissues slowed down dramatically once he started Return to Ommadawn), or if it’s just the double-header of the uninspiring Islands and Earth Moving that’s made it unappealing, it remains to be seen. But mostly I’d love a deluxe edition of his 1990 album Amarok, which he spoke enthusiastically about doing some years ago.
    And of course TB4 itself was promised to be an immersive/interactive album in itself, so that would make for a great deluxe edition should it ever surface.

    Happy that the Manics are doing GATS, which is widely believed to be the band’s least favourite, as it bodes well for Know Your Enemy in 2001 and possibly even Lifeblood after that (although my Japanese 2CD version of Lifeblood will more than suffice if the latter never happens).

    It’s 25 years since Idlewild have formed and they’re promising an anniversary tour and at least one release, quite likely to include a sizeable book. Whether it’ll contain music or not remains to be seen, but it’s a definite purchase for me either way.

    Martin Newell has announced a second Teatime Assortment set on Captive Tracks, which should cover favourite track from his last four self-released albums. Mostly just a curio to see which he’ll choose, for me, as I have those records, but it’ll nice for the material to reach a wider audience once again.

    Nurse With Wound’s Automating 5CD boxset was promised a couple of years ago and has yet to come together, which I’m excited about as it should contain a fair amount of unissued and out-of-print material from my favourite era of the band (ie pre-2004).

    On a similar note, Current 93’s remaster series seems to have stalled in 1987, and newly found master tapes have persuaded David Tibet to start doing some proper expanded reissues for the first time. This year will see deluxe versions of Horsey, Sleep Has His House, and I Have a Special Plan for This World.

    Orbital were due to release a 3CD box called 30 last year, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Chime being released, including an in-studio live recording of greatest hits and remixes by other artists, but nothing’s been heard since (the only news we’ve had has been Paul sample-collecting for new material), I’m wondering whether this year being the 30th anniversary of Chime being picked up by FFRR and charting in the UK will be celebrated in a similar manner.

    I’m still holding out for some reissues of the Lightning Seeds back catalogue, but last year’s vinyl-only repress of Jollification for the album’s 25th anniversary suggested that this might not be so likely. On the other hand, the long-promised new album should hopefully be out this year… only 11 years since the last (and 21 since what Ian Broudie considers the last ‘proper’ album).

    And I’d love a follow-up to James’s wonderful Laid / Wah-Wah box from the other year, although the complete lack of notable reissues other than that set suggests that maybe 2012’s The Gathering Sound box is the only thing we’ll get from them in general. But there are still plenty of b-sides to gather…

    I don’t see Underworld focusing on the A Hundred Days Off box until after they finish their Drift project, which is due to continue this year for a second series, so that’s unlikely.

    Still hoping in vain for some Divine Comedy releases, although Neil expressed doubt about it in an interview not so long ago, citing a lack of potential interest or notable material. Given that the Setanta albums have been out of print for a decade, just a remaster with a bonus disc of b-sides would be more than enough for the moment!

    And an even vainer hope for Wire’s ’80s & ’90s albums to get the same treatment as their ’70s ones.

    1. Agreed re James reissues. The Stutter/Stripmine double was nicely done & The Laid/Wah Wah boxset was excellent so surely the Gold Mother period needs something similar if only to finally get all that Rough Trade material out again!

  125. I just got SFY by Simple Minds and it is a beautifully produced album. I will be curious if they include real unreleased stuff like they did for NGD in the boxset. A blu ray audio disc should be nice for that also.

    My wishlist for 2020 on the reissue front:
    Duran Duran invest in their 40th anniversary year with quality reissues.
    Thompson Twins finally get quality remasters and reissue their catalogue on cd.
    Kraftwerk: either finally give a new album or release some real archival stuff, videos, unreleased stuff, the single mixes.

    The Visage cds coming out this month from Rubellan Remasters are something I know I have interest in, and the YMO Live 1981 blu ray in February from Sony Japan.

  126. The Beach Boys’ Sunflower/Surf’s Up set – currently said to be titled “Feel Flows” should be an absolute treasure trove. Potential for many wonderful vocals-only/instrumental tracks – things that have circulated among fans but in much better fidelity – as well as those elusive spatializer mixes overseen by engineer and studio genius Steve Desper (who maybe ought to get a co-producer credit on a lot of the material).

    This is the period when, building on the precedent of the 20/20 album, each member of the band blossomed and had the chance to shine with their own material.

    Mountains of unreleased and rare material from this period too.

    In particular I’m looking forward to getting insight into tracks such as Day In the Life of a Tree, Til I Die, and the (definitive) 1971 take on surf’s Up, the band’s (and possibly rock’s) defining high point.

    If Alan Boyd and Mark Linett are looking in, can I request stripped-back versions of Bruce Johnson’s contributions to the Sunflower album? Deirdre and Tears in the Morning would benefit from a little less strings and syrup! IMHO.

      Would love to see it boxed a la the Tull reissues with all the B-sides, remixes and a BBC concert or two (they were recorded by the Beeb at least twice when they were promoting the debut album) – a 5.1 Blu-ray would be the icing on the cake!

      I’ll happily suggest a track listing for the reissue (the self-compiled DLX on my iPod runs I think to 30 or 31 tracks) – anybody got Peter Cox’s e-mail?

  135. Long ago there were rumours of a Siouxsie and the Banshees’ definitive singles collection (“Ever After”), but it never materialized. I would also love a complete A-sides 2 or 3-cd set by Duran Duran, but if a new album is coming in 2020 we’d have to wait at least until 2021 for a compilation – something like OMD’s Souvenir or Simple Minds’ “Celebrate”.

    Marc Almond is coming back with a new album and some solo reissues would be welcome. I think of “Tenement Symphony” (Cherry Red now owns it, together with Twelve Years of Tears), a deluxe edition would include top-quality b-sides with some in-depth commentary from the artist himself.

    I bought a bare-bones Style Council box set with all the albums, including the house music “experiment” which was shelved by Polydor. I’d rather have a new b-sides and rarities collection since Here’s Some That Got Away is long out-of-print.

    No Prefab Sprout remasters on CD? What about all those b-sides and alternative versions?

    I would love Intervention Records to remaster and re-release “Night and Day” and “Body and Soul” on SACD and vinyl – the current Joe Jackson remasters leave a lot to be desired, especially B&S which is full of awful clicks and pops and it was never corrected.

    I’m in for Simple Minds’ “Street Fighting Years” and Tears For Fears’ “The Seeds of Love”.

    1. Alessandro, I have actually been in touch with the owner of Intervention Records about the potential reissue of Joe Jackson’s “Body And Soul”. His response from a few months ago was “I have amazing test pressings of that title and hope to get it out in 2019 and as for the format(s) “Vinyl only and who knows.“. Obviously 2019 has come and gone so hopefully this will get done for 2020.

  136. Hi Paul, great article as always, but I’m confused: In your Let It Be article back in Jan 2019, you quoted Peter Jackson:

    So I don’t understand why anyone would be concerned about them digging into this ‘unhappy period’ when Peter Jackson, who has reviewed all of the footage, has stated (and as quoted by yourself) that it wasn’t that unhappy after all… I have no doubt that the anniversay releases will continue with Let It Be and then beyond for 2021.

    1. I was referring more to the audio. In 2003 they went through all the tapes, de-Phil Spectored them, and issued Let It Be Naked. So the point is what is left to do with the audio that wasn’t done at the then?

      1. Isn’t ‘Let It Be… Naked’ just the same takes without the Phil Spector overdubs/edits etc?
        If so, they would only have to return to the final selected masters. I get what you’re saying, but 17 years later remastering has come a long way and they could surely be cleaned up. Anyway, the point is they wouldn’t be revisiting an unhappy period as it has been discovered to be not as bad as previously reported.

          1. Interesting. I don’t believe that they would have gone through the entire recordings for ‘Let It Be… Naked’ though. I can believe that Peter Jackson and his team would have for the film though. Remember, the documentary team will be going through the audio archives as well as the video archives for the best material. There will be so much audio for the Let It Be box – Way more than the Abbey Road sessions. The rooftop concert alone would yeild a full disc. I believe they’ll have the full concert as a bonus for the documentary.

            I have to say though, as a fan of the original release and of Phil Spector’s work in general, I hope they include some isolated orchestra recordings from the ’70s sessions. I love the score for The Long And Winding Road. He turned the recording into something sublime with that. The guy is a genius.

          2. Surely the point is that ‘Let It Be… Naked’ [anyone else hate that title?] was a stand-alone album, whereas the forthcoming set will be a ‘Super Deluxe’ item, presumably encompassing ‘Let It Be’, ‘LIB… Naked’, ‘Get Back’ and other vault material. Otherwise one might say that there was no need for the last three box sets as all that material was disseminated for ‘Anthology 2’ and ‘Anthology 3’.

          3. I’m sure it will be fine, but I was just making the point that they may not go to town quite as much. Let It Be has had ‘Naked’ and Anthology 3 so two things versus one.

  137. Not sure it counts as a reissue as it didn’t really come out first time but i’m hopeful we will finally get the third album by Its Immaterial this year, ‘House For Sale’. Have been waiting for it the last few years but Pledge Music going down the drain was the latest in a list of obstacles to it finally emerging. Fingers crossed for 2020.

  138. Japan’s Quiet Life was due in January as some sort of reissue according to the Electronic Sound magazine, which ran a feature a few months ago.
    Since then no further information has been forthcoming. Anyone know anything more?

Hopefully, the deluxe edition will be released shortly with an improved sound over the 2004 CD issue we trust……

  139. I’m hoping for further Alan Parsons Project reissues from Esoteric Recordings beyond “Ammonia Avenue”, like maybe “Turn of a Friendly Card” later in the year for the 40th anniversary or even a nice big box set for “I, Robot”.

    Another thing I want is a simpler CD/Blu-Ray reissue of “Gentle Giant” outside of the “Unburied Treasure” box set so I can hear Steven Wilson’s complete 5.1 mix of the album.

    Plus another XTC 5.1 release (also mixed by Steven Wilson) would always be welcome too!

    Rush have already confirmed a 40th anniversary box set for “Permanent Waves”. We just don’t know the release date yet.

    Another release to mention which still hasn’t materialized yet is a Quadio box set from the Doobie Brothers. It has been worked on though! Maybe with the possible Rock Hall induction and the 50th anniversary Rhino will see fit to finally release this collection!

    Finally I would also like the 50th anniversary reissue series from the Band to continue with “Stage Fright”. Those Bob Clearmountain 5.1 mixes have been amazing!

  140. It would be good if Cherry Red would curate a Birmingham “Second City” set. Producers such as Bob Lamb would be ideal to showcase and what came out of Brum 1978 onwards was every bit as interesting as any other UK city. Most of the big acts that thrived in Birmingham have a history that could be explored and pre-fame obscurities could be exhumed.

    So once they are done with Ulster punk maybe a Central Midlands (maybe including Coventry) 3CD retrospective could be in order.

  143. REALLY excited about the coming year, especially the Peter Jackson “Let It Be” project. Let’s hope Apple does this often unappreciated album proud! I’ve always been a fan of the “new phase Beatles album”! Wouldn’t it be great if they re-printed the sumptuous book that accompanied the first copies of the album (I have a slightly tatty second-hand copy bought in the 1980s).

    Speculating here of course but a nice re-issue of Howard Jones’ “Cross That Line” album would be much appreciated (as would a collection of live BBC tracks mooted by a commentator on another SDE discussion thread). Here’s hoping!

  144. Assuming there will also be a Bootleg Series Volume 16 from Bob Dylan in November too … lots of options, which will delight some and disappoint other. This year’s 1967-69 was limited to 3CDs (though perhaps the ultra-limited 2CD 50th Anniversary Collection 1969 ‘copyright’ collection should really be considered part of this release, albeit pretty much unobtainable by the vast majority of fans/collectors) so perhaps something a bit more ‘super’? How about the 1993 Supper Club shows in both audio and video (or a live show from a multi-night residency [NYC 2019 or Japan 2020])?

The planets are aligning for a 6CD box (and 2LP vinyl best-of from it) in the middle of 2020 of almost entirely unreleased material from a major British folk artist associated primarily with the 60s, but I can say no more at the moment. Also, Cherry Red are currently working on an Ulster punk 3CD set.

  147. Great news about the Manics GATS. There’s some outstanding b sides (it’ll be interesting if Patrick Batemen gets included) from that era plus they were incendiary live around that time too so no complaints about a live set being included. I’m looking forward to a Ramones End of the Century being issued continuing the SDE treatment, and obviously The Cure need to get their fingers out this year too. If I had one release on my wish list it would be for a formal reissue of the Cro-Mags Age of Quarrel. Long overdue.

  149. We should be seeing a physical box set of Beach Boys Sunflower and Surf’s Up goodies to be entitled ‘Feel Flows’. This was let out of the bag by Al Jardine and Bruce Johnston. Fingers crossed!!

  150. Things look really weird on the Queen front. The ‘Live Killers 40’ set everyone expected last year hasn’t materialised but for 2020, a ‘Miracle’ super deluxe issue has been announced (31st anniversary!). A ‘Game’ box really ought to be coming this year (40th anniversary!) but nothing has been confirmed AFAIK. A ‘Night at the Opera’ set (45th anniversary!) would be very welcome, too!

    1. Supposedly the Live Killers boxset is still in the works.. but, yes, they missed out on a great opportunity last year for its 40th. Especially with all the interest they generated last year with the movie!!!!

    The Distractions classic LP, Nobody’s Perfect, is getting issued on CD for the very first time in March. Been waiting a long time for this, so fingers crossed this will finally happen.

    1. The lost Manchester classic, Nobody’s Perfect, is indeed being reissued at last, as a 48-track 2CD set and on vinyl. The 2CD set includes the album in remastered and remixed forms, plus 20 bonus tracks. The vinyl is the remixed album. The small team behind this have been working on and off at getting it released for about a decade – just in time for the 40th anniversary!

  152. Great article Paul! Agreed on an expanded Like A Prayer.. would be amazing but I’m not holding my breath. So far for 2020 I’m most excited about the prospect of Goldfrapp’s “Felt Mountain” 20th anniversary reissue and box set in the fall!

  153. Somewhere in january there will be two remastered albums of Visage at cd. This by the small American label Rubellan Remasters which is focused on mostly new wave. That label will always keep the important dynamic range by using master tapes of the albums

    Last year Rubellan released allready Visage’s debut album (with extra tracks). This year there will be also their second album ‘The Anvil’ and their dance mix album which was in 1983 released as cassette only. This album will be for the first time at cd. Both with bonus tracks.

    2. I was underwhelmed by the remastering on their (Rubellan) version of the debut, but will still buy these releases. From what people were saying about it, I was expecting a massive improvement in the sound, but it wasn’t apparent to me.

      The dance mix album was issued on vinyl too back in the day.

  154. I would love to see big deluxe boxsets from Elton for Yellow Brick and and Captain Fantastic.
    Both of those albums would make great boxsets and he must have a wealth of material available.
    He could include a coloured vinyl LP , a hardback book ,cds, BLU rays and lots of memorabilia.
    I can only dream…………
    Also Out of the Blue by The Electric Light Orchestra in the same mould would be fantastic.
    Yet again I can only dream……..

    I reached out to Vinny Vero recently who confirmed the ABC “Abracadabra” reissue is still in the works, so hopefully this year as it was first mentioned in 2018.

    Where are the remaining Kirsty MacColl reissues? Demon did a great job with the vinyl of Kite and Electric Landlady in 2018. We still need Titanic Days, Tropical Brainstorm, and the Galore Singles Collection at least. One can only hope something is done to preserve her legacy 20 years after her untimely death.

  159. Given the 5.1 of Dark Side Of The Moon on the 2011 set says it’s the 2003 mix, what’s the difference between the new release and the original SACD?

    1. I asked Paul the same question re: Wish You Were Here back in the spring. His response was that there are very minor differences but that it’s basically a toss-up as to which sound better. More a matter of opinion vs. any specific technical aspects. However, for my money, the Blu-ray audio mixes of DSOTM and WYWH stand apart from the SACD mixes. I do have both versions of WYWH and they both sound great. But if you already have the Immersion set of DSOTM, I see no reason to double dip on the 5.1 mix.

  162. I’ve heard word that long, long, LONG overdue reissues are coming for pre-Mazzy Star band Opal, as well as expanded editions of the first two MS releases.

    2. Mark Powell said a few months ago that “Axe Victim” was the next Be-Bop Deluxe reissue, sometime in the Spring, which means that “Drastic Plastic” should follow later in the year. :)

      1. I was scanning this column and posts specifically for Be-Bop news… Three of the BBD releases (including Live In The Air Age) are still waiting for deluxification, plus Red Noise. You have to believe most fans would rather see Axe before Plastic, and certainly Air Age soon as can be. But mostly, let’s hope they just HIT THE GAS on this series. I understand release windows and all that, but who wants to see this drag on for 2 and 1/2 more years?

        Check out Bill Nelson’s latest (well, ‘recent’ since he releases something every three months, it seems) called Old Haunts. A good one, and a vocal record for a change.

    2. Ooooh, thanks for the heads up about the Ric Ocasek reissue. Not familiar with Rubellan, but really hoping they do a good job with the sound quality. I have the original and the ’97 reissue, and both are rather flat to these ears. Such a great album deserves a great mix.

      His catalog needs a proper reissue campaign, especially one that includes NEGATIVE THEATER album from ’93, which never saw an official release in the States. Would love that to be expanded with all 2CD worth of tracks and accompanying poetry book.

  166. We should also get an expanded edition of Art of Noise’s Below The Waste this year as well as a new Propaganda album with Claudia & Suzanne in collaboration with Stephen Lipson.

    1. I do not know if they can call it “Propaganda” (though each propaganda project had a different constellation of band members in and out). having Lipson involved givea me hope it will be a good sounding album.

  167. I’ve enjoyed Depeche Mode’s 12 inch box set releases so far, so do we think they will delay further releases of this due to the big 18 cd box set due later this month?
    The next 12 inch box set is the biggie most folk are looking towards, which is the Violator set.

  168. Depeche Mode‘s Violator will have its 30th anniversary on the 19. March 2020.
    This is a great opportunity to issue SDE which will finally include all demos, instrumentals, live tracks from violator tour in the US which are available in the Mute Vaults as there is an excellent bootleg from the tour already available since many years. Even to try to remaster this recording will be a great effort
    and finally make the fans happier than rather issuing the DM Box. Alternatively is to issue a DVD from the tour which was discovered some years ago on a VHS cassette and why not involve Steven Wilson for the 5.1 mixing. Please please Daniel Miller and DM please make us happy with a solid DM reissue again. For such a SDE Issue I will not even thing for a minute of I have to spend 150 Euros or even more as a long time DM Fan.
    Please release it!!!!!!

    Also a humble pie album box set on cd to reflect the vinyl version from a few years back, with bonus tracks.
    Hopefully we’ll finally see the small faces – autumn stone deluxe set, first mooted back in 2014.
    With regards let it be – October? for the film as book listed on amazon (usa and uk) as ‘get back’. Maybe the album re-issue of ‘let it be’ in May? We need to remember they’re not keen on calling the new film ‘let it be’ because it won’t be, it’s ‘new’ footage used from the 55 + hours being used

    1. Would love to see some Style Council reissues! “Cafe Bleu” deluxe is long overdue. There’s more than a complete album of non-LP singles and B-sides surrounding that album, all of them absolutely essential tracks. In fact, I’d love to see deluxe 2CD editions of the remaining three albums. I know Weller is still very busy making new music, all of it excellent, but I sense that his fans aren’t fetishizing the past at the expense of the present. I know I’m not!

  172. Any news ( maybe through Pete Paphides) about a release of Cocksure? The “Difficult” Stephen Duffy 1986 Second LP that originally saw the light as “Because We Love You” and sits as highly in my estimation of his work as any other album. It’s not ground-breaking like the eponymous “The Lilac Time” but consistently delivers the feel of a real album. The sum being better than it’s parts. If something along the lines of the wonderfully conceived re-release of “I Love My Friends” were to happen I (among many here – hopefully) would be delighted. For one, it’s associated b-sides are truly magnificent.

  173. Cherry Red are set to continue their reissue programmes for both The Fall and The Residents. No concrete news on what the next Rez release will be (several were trailed in the booklets for the last batch) but The Fall’s “Reformation Post TLC” is due in the first quarter. The Fall’s mid ’00s US label, Narnack, is also trailing a reissue of “Fall Heads Roll” for March.

    1. This is also the 30th Anniversary of Violator. Hard For me to imagine the occasion wouldn’t be marked in some way given the pivotal nature of this very excellent record. I was hoping for an anniversary tour but that doesn’t seem to be materializing. I hope they don’t skip over this in favor of commemorating the mediocre SOFAD period in a couple of years.

      1. They did stop the 12″ singles boxes with Music for the Masses, so maybe they pick back upwith Violator this year…. unless they just decided to stop that campaign.

  183. Let It Be should be a great release package and hopefully it wont be dumbed down at all. Kate Bush would be nice, but NO-ONE is holding their breath for that! I’ll take a look at Roachford and am excited about The Big Moons new album coming out this week.
