Kate Bush, Ultravox, Madonna, Peter Cox & Bob Dylan

Kate Bush inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Kate Bush is one of seven inductees in the 2023 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, in the performer category. Kate has been nominated before, a number of times, but this year ‘is through to the next round’ will be inducted, no doubt in part due to her higher profile in America thanks to the success of ‘Running Up That Hill’ in 2022.

In a comment Kate said that she was “completely shocked” at the news, adding “It’s something I just never thought would happen”.

We now wait to see if Kate will accept the invitation to perform at the ceremony later this year. It seems unlikely, given that she has never played live in the US, although she performed ‘The Man With The Child In His Eyes’ on Saturday Night Live way back in 1978. It will be interesting to see who inducts her, either way.

The other inductees are Sheryl Crow, Missy Elliott, George Michael, Willie Nelson, Rage Against the Machine and The Spinners.

Missing B-side confirmed as included on Quartet deluxe

A few of you noticed that ‘Monument’, the B-side to Ultravox’s 1982 single ‘Hymn’, appeared to be missing from the newly announced Quartet deluxe edition. The other three B-sides were listed as being remixed by Steven Wilson and he clearly noticed the comments on SDE since he emailed me to say he definitely did remix this song for both stereo and 5.1.

I checked with Chrysalis who confirmed that ‘Monument’ definitely is on CD 2 in stereo and on the DVD in hi-res stereo and 5.1. Great news, and the tracklisting on Thursday’s post has been updated to reflect this.

Madonna’s Immaculate Collection remixed for Dolby Atmos

While we wait for one of Madonna’s studio albums to be given the full reissue treatment, it’s clear that plenty of archival work is going on in the background and evidence of this is a new Dolby Atmos version of her 1990 compilation The Immaculate Collection which has just appeared on Apple Music.

Madonna’s first greatest hits is said to be the best-selling ‘best of’ ever, with sales reported at over 30m units worldwide. Upon release, it featured 15 previously released singles, some of them edited and remixed, plus the new single at the time, ‘Justify My Love’, and another new track ‘Rescue Me’.

Producer Mike Dean has overseen the new mix of The Immaculate Collection. He has also created the Atmos Mix for Christine and the Queens‘ forthcoming album Paranoïa, Angels, True Love which features Madonna on three tracks. How good or ‘immersive’ this mix actually will be debated. I’ve had one listen and I’m not particularly impressed.

Madonna starts her celebration tour in July and has just announced a special Rainbow Edition of the 6LP vinyl version of Finally Enough Love: 50 Number Ones.

  1. The Atmos mix of The Immaculate Collection is an interesting listen to say the least. A lot of the tracks are ‘fuller’ and some really benefit from that, particularly Like A Prayer and Live To Tell.

Rescue Me and Justify My Love sound superb. Vogue is a real disappointment, I would have thought that this of all tracks would benefit from the Atmos treatment.

Express Yourself is a let down; it feels like M’s vocals are swamped. Too low down in the mix?

Sounds like a different vocal take has been used for Cherish.

  2. I do find it amusing people saying kate ‘should’ release this or should be performing live. I think most people know by now that she does exactly what she wants to and I can’t imagine that is all of a sudden gonna change.

  3. Madonna’s “The Immaculate Collection” is the biggest selling greatest hits album by a solo artist. The latter part was missing from the claims. It’s still quite a feat, especially when you consider those groups are mostly made of men.

  4. I think its about time for a new Kate Bush compilation with the original version of Wuthering Heights instead of the re-recorded one from 1986. A good way also of cashing in on the success of Running Up That Hill.

  5. The Immaculate Collection sounds pretty great on my AirPods, Papa Don’t Preach even has new vocals at the end, Rescue Me really comes to life here.

  6. Madonna’s Immaculate Collection is one of two Q Sound mixes I can remember from back in the day. The other being Sting.

  7. I think Kate bush disappeared and was replaced by a look-alike some time in the early 1990s. Unfortunately we can’t all have such a talented and productive look-alike as Paul McCartney …
It’s amazing to see how much fandom can create high-profile momentum in complete absentia of the artist on almost all levels.
(That being said, that what she did while still ‘in the profession’ was utterly unique and special!)

  8. I made many an enemy / friend on the Kate Bush news Forum back in the day and it’s an argument that can never be won, only prolonged.

Whatever we think it won’t matter a jot or make the tiniest impression. If it did, things would have already happened, it’s been a while. It’s great that some artists see criticism and do something positive when those criticisms or observations are valid but I can’t imagine for one second that Kate takes any notice.

To be frank if Kate spends her days on the Chaise Longue munching choccy digestives till the cows come her that is her prerogative. Although I do agree with much of what Paul says below there is a lot that could be done that doesn’t rely on forward looking momentum. With one wave of the digestive wielding hand she could authorise any one of a dozen desired projects that wouldn’t need “new” material or the creative pain that the “new” can cause. So there has (?) to be some element of wilfulness in that department and that is a shame. We are well in to Red Shoes / Aerial territory now with a 12 year gap between new material.

There is of course the possibility that Kate will surprise us, I would class myself as a fairly long term fan and pretty much everything she has done comes as a surprise to me. So maybe the new album, SDEs of The Kick Inside / Lionheart, the blu-ray of Before the Dawn *AND* the dual disc CD / Blu-Ray of “The Full Story” are imminent. Maybe.

    1. You’re covering all the angles there Chris.

Only one persons opinion matters on what comes next. Kate’s the one with the talent and healthy bank balance to determine her destiny. No one can say Kate’s nothing but consistent in keeping her next moves to herself, until she’s ready to do what she wants.

The rest is just wishing and hoping.

  9. The version of Borderline in the new Atmos version is not mixed from the same version as on the original album. It has things all ‘in the wrong place’ – even the intro drum and sparkly synth are all wrong. It’s so annoying – this is not an Atmos mix. It’s an alternative version of the original album.

  10. Limited numbers of the first edition of “The Immaculate Collection” were released on an early surround sound format called Zucherelli Holophonic, which was supposed to “magically” throw sound in front of and behind the listener without additional equipment. It was about as “surround” as sticking your head and a transistor radio in a dustbin at the same time, however.

    I hope this is better.

    1. It was about as “surround” as sticking your head and a transistor radio in a dustbin”. Haha! I think that would be very effective indeed!

  11. I really don’t see why Kate Bush won’t perform Love And Anger/Running Up That Hill/Get Out Of My House live in the US…

  12. … And in other Dolby Atmos news; King Crimson are launching a DA series. In The Court Of The Crimson King has already had the treatment and can be found in the 1969 Complete Sessions box set, whilst In The Wake Of Poseidon, Lizard and Larks’ Tongues In Aspic will be released as 3CD+Blu Ray sets featuring Dolby Atmos, 5.1 and stereo mixes, whilst the BD will featured the entire sessions for each album in stereo. The first two are coming ‘soon’, with Larks’ Tongues due in the Autumn. Oddly no sign of Islands though (!)
Great news for Dead Or Alive fans; Cherry Red are to release Let Them Drag My Soul Away, a 3 CD set of the bands pre Epic label output. All singles (including the Nightmares On Wax 12″), plus demos, Peel Sessions, etc. This is set for release in July. A very welcome companion to the (long deleted) Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI set. And that’s the music news for today. Have a good w/end.

    1. @SimonF, I have the deluxe versions of their latter albums which offer a 5.1. Do you know if they/he will reissue the same boxes, this time to include DA or is this treatment reserved for the earlier work?

      1. I guess DGM will see how these albums sell before proceeding any further. But I can’t believe they won’t reissue the whole lot. Certainly the major 12×12 box sets are now complete. There will be no more. Odd though that the Islands album is missing from this first batch. I just got all this info off the back page of the Uncut King Crimson Curated Edition magazine which was published a couple of weeks ago and is highly recommended with all new interveiws and each band member (the seven headed beast line-up) choosing archive articles of favourite bands to be republished. A great companion to the Uncut King Crimson Ultimate Music guide magazine of 2019. Get yours today!!

  13. Yeah, I’m sure all the attention she got for “Running Up That Hill” on Stranger Things brought her name to the forefront. Tori Amos would be an obvious — maybe too obvious — person to induct her. BTW, on the Dec. 9, 1978 SNL, she also did “Them Heavy People.” Supposedly Loren Michaels hated her; I believe the one-hour VHS commercial tape of that episode doesn’t include either song, although she’s pictured on the cover.

The problem I have with Ms. Bush is her total disregard for her fans who have given her the reclusive lifestyle she leads in terms of a complete lack of video on disc. Where’s the Hammersmith show? The Whole Story video collection? The Red Shoes? These were all released presumably with her permission on VHS, but none have come out on DVD or Blu-ray. And of course, the major disappointment: no video of her 2014 Before the Dawn concerts, which sold out in 15 minutes. Great for the thousands who lived in the UK and got tickets but what about her fans in the US, Australia Japan etc.? Multiple shows were filmed, but all we got was an audio CD. The general rumor that has gone around is that she was unhappy with how she looked due to her weight gain. Hey, Kate: you’re not 20 anymore, and neither are your fans. We love your music. Believe me, as a musician myself, I understand an artist has a right to release what they want, but there is also the aspect of making the fans happy who made you a few wealthy and able to live your secluded life with no new releases announced. In an interview about the video not coming out, she said she want to move on to “new things.”

Okay, so nine years later, and the only new thing that’s happened is she’s gotten a lot richer due to the Stranger Things song usage of a song from 1985. Oh, and of course the two box sets that frustrated fans by the lack of a number of b-sides/rarities such as “Ken,” “The Empty Bullring” and the Castaway soundtrack version of “Be Kind To My Mistakes.” She must be exhausted with all the new projects she’s been working on for nine years. What does she do every day? Does she ever sit at the piano and write a new song? How many unheard demos are in her music vault? The mind boggles. No new music, no touring … and no disc release of ANY of her commercially released VHS videos. I’ll always be a fan since album #1 … but a frustrated fan.

    1. Umm.
A pal of mine thinks similarly to you. He thinks we have a right to expect regular new music from artists because we buy their music and therefore make them rich.
This is – of course – nonsense.
If ‘Ms. Bush’ never records another note in her lifetime then she is perfectly entitled to. If she chooses to spend her days just scratching her arse then she is perfectly entitled to. If she thinks she looks too fat in the ‘Before The Dawn’ recordings and doesn’t want the sight immortalised forever on film for everyone to see – then that’s her perogative.
I’m endlessly gagging for new music from her but what ‘Ms Bush’ has already given us is remarkable beyond belief – and we should all be grateful for it.
      I know I am.

      1. I do have some sympathy with Geof’s view. For example, cleaning up all your videos and issuing them on blu-ray isn’t that difficult to do. And it seems such a weird thing for Kate *not* to want to do. Presumably she’s really proud of her videos for songs like Army Dreamers, Hounds of Love, Experiment IV etc? And by not touring and taking a decade to make albums she has more time than most available. In short, it’s not an unreasonable expectation from your average fan and I get rather irritated when people become pious about this and say “she doesn’t owe you anything”. It’s not about ‘owing’ anything, it’s just about someone like Kate understanding the push and pull of the artist/fan dynamic and being willing to do things that are reasonable. So far example, if Kate doesn’t want to release the video to Before The Dawn because she doesn’t think it’s very good – for whatever reason – that is reasonable and it’s her artistic decision, however painful it may be for people who didn’t get to go to the show. But to keep all your great videos languishing on VHS/laserdisc is harder to defend. There’s not really a good reason to do that. No one is saying ‘she owes us’ but it’s disappointing when you feel like an artist doesn’t care about what their fans might want and you feel like there needs to be a spirit of give and take. Kate takes all the time she needs to make new records but during those long periods she could be authorising her representatives to ‘give’ things back to fans that aren’t really any drain on her creative resources.

        1. I can’t remember the last time I saw any artist put out a standalone retail compilation of promos – most music BR/DVD releases are Rockumentaries, and occasionally a live show. For most artists a promo video compilation, and releases of old live footage wouldn’t stack up except as part of an extra disc in a box set. There doesn’t seem to be as strong a market for ‘Holding the Music Video in your hands’ generally so I don’t think more video compilations are top of any record label board meeting agendas (even at Cherry Red never mind at Fish People or whatever it is). However, there’s a strong case for a revamped KB Singles collection to upgrade ‘The Whole Story’- with an SDE along the lines of the Beatles ‘1’ – CD and companion DVD/BR with either a promo clip or appropriate footage for each single, all nicely polished up. It won’t happen – (mind you, I “predicted” FGTH would never reform so…)

          1. Fair point, but Kate could have done it 25 years ago in 1998 when DVD was in its infancy. As you say, at this point in time some kind of deluxe singles collection with a blu-ray would be the most likely (aka very UNlikely) option.

          2. There is a bootleg 2xDVD collection of all Kate’s promo videos on ebay. I keep looking at it, wondering if not to take the plunge over the quality of it. Anyone out there have this and if so what’s it like?

        2. But her videos aren’t languishing – they’re viewed on YT more often on a weekly basis than they would have been throughout the 80s and 90s combined. While we’d love the blu-rays, the only market is for sad-sacks like us, who will inevitably complain that the second Babooshka video is missing or the whole thing should be in Atmos.

If anything, the RARHOF announcement may…and it’s a big may…lead to the long-awaited updated singles compilation on LP and CD. It would tie in well with the new distribution deal. Heck, who knows – we may get a Limited Edition version with the videos as well.

    2. Maybe she should have a word with ABBA. I can’t think of a witty Kate equivalent of an ABBAtar but I would have thought it perfect for her too.

        1. How about this….the Kate Bush hologram tour? She’s obviously still alive and well enough to help create/develop/approve the imagery, send it out on tour on her behalf, give her musicians some work and give fans a chance to at least here the music live, if not necessarily the vocals. No concerns about whether or not her voice has held up if they used original vocal tracks, unless of course she’d want to record new vocals to go with the image. Also no concerns about dancing & choreography since the hologram could do it for her, you could even have it do ‘new’ moves if desired. If a tour isn’t feasible due to technology certainly a residency could do well, and during its run have shows recorded/filmed for those who can’t make it in person. Maybe even a live Youtube stream, as annoying as ads would be maybe it would make enough money over time to make it worthwhile. There’s my thoughts to the universe for today…..

    3. What does she do every day? Maybe she live ordinary life like we all do. Eat, sleep, take a shower, wash the clothes, read the books, watch the tv. Or she’ll be exhausted by reading the comments from SDE for nine years!

    4. My favourite artists “please” me by pursuing by their own creative interests to “please” themselves. I want to be surprised and challenged, rather than be second-guessed by musicians who buckle to perceived market demand and offer me what they think I want, or who merely offer me product. I would lose a considerable chunk of respect for creators like Kate Bush, Paddy Mcaloon and in a previous age, Mark Hollis if they started playing the game predictably. With ABBA and “Voyage”, their message to their hires seems to have been: “This is what we’ve made, this is what we wanted to make – now find a way to sell it that causes us the least discomfort” – brilliant.

        1. Er…Not quite, because, presumably, that would be what she wanted to do, and it would almost certainly show.

You know very well they my point is that she doesn’t “owe” us a blu-Ray of 30 year old promo films, and it would show a lack of confidence and character on her part if she bent to every internet fan-boy whim.

        2. Paul, look at this way. You run a news service and boutique record label of-sorts in a way that’s carved out a unique market position. We love what you do, because you do what you want. Of course you have to sustain your position by maintaining a dialogue with artists and readers, but ultimately both like it because it reflects what you want to do – you don’t owe us anything but to keep being yourself. No-one else is going to delight and surprise me by publicising an unexpectedly enjoyable Dannii Minogue album I’d never even considered listening to until that point. DM and (I presume, from memory) Cherry Red will be delighted that I can, at the very least, push a bit of money their way that NME and Pitchfork would never be able to prise out of me.

    5. Actually I can think of one, Depeche Mode issued a massive promo video collection a few years ago though annoyingly it was a 3-DVD set and only in stereo even though all their albums at that point were issued in 5.1.

What I have been finding is some artists have been quietly upgrading their promo videos to HD and putting them on youtube. For instance, you can find U2’s Two Hearts Beat As One and Gloria which were left off their VHS collections. The Rolling Stones, Coldplay and some Madness videos have been upgraded. It may be the case that there’s less overhead costs to place the videos on youtube than to release them on blu-ray.

      1. That release was long before streaming was as popular as it is now. Sure YouTube existed as did other equivalents but it wasn’t affecting physical sales to the degree it is now. To hammer the point home take another medium; film/TV. Disney won’t even release shows on DVD/blu that fans would lap up of say the Star Wars or Marvel franchises as they don’t need too. Same with Netflix, outside of America you cannot physically buy any season of Stranger Things. Like it or loathe it the physical medium is on the decline. I’m just grateful for the most part music-wise I can still buy the majority of new releases and hold/peruse them.

  14. Nothing mentioned on here that the Canadian singer songwriter Gordon Lightfoot passed away aged 84 on Monday 1st this week, A highly respected artist who was without any doubt Canada’s greatest songwriter, his songs have been recorded by Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash to name a few…RIP Gord.

  15. You can also pre-order signed and unsigned copies of Go West’s albums ‘Futurenow’ and ‘3D’ on vinyl from their official store…..

  16. Cheers to Kate Bush and Sheryl Crow for this achievement. Well deserved.! Both ladies worked very hard to get where they are and made the most of their talents. Huzzah to them..!!
