Deep Purple / “Made In Japan” reissue: boxes & formats explained

Universal Music will today officially announced the reissue of the Deep Purple live classic Made In Japan that we told you about last month.
This reissue of the 1972 album seems to have virtually all bases covered with TWO super deluxe box sets (one is a 4CD+DVD offering, the other a 9LP set), a two-CD deluxe edition, a 2LP version, a Pure Audio hi-res Blu-ray Audio, HD downloads and last but not least, the humble one-CD remaster!
Super Deluxe Edition box sets
Both boxes offer the full 1972 Japanese tour newly remixed (by Martin Pullan). The CD-based set includes the following:
- • 4 x CD
- • DVD
- • 7” promo single
- • Deluxe 60 Page Hardback book + memorabilia
- • MP3 and HD Download card
The first CD is the Osaka gig from 15th August, the second is Osaka again from 16th August, and the third disc is Tokyo from 17th August. All the encores from every night are gathered on a fourth and final CD. The DVD includes the documentary The Rise of Deep Purple Mk II as well as some other rare clips. Even better, this box comes with a high definition download of the original Made In Japan album; both the new 2013 remix and the original 1973 mix (remastered).

The VINYL super deluxe box set is a gargantuan 9LP box set which includes all the (remixed) audio on the CD box across nine heavyweight 180g vinyl records. Each gig takes up five sides of vinyl (four for the main set, and a fifth for the encores). The sixth side has no audio content and is in fact an etched disc. The vinyl set also includes a 60-page hardback book and again comes with the same HD download of both mixes of the original album release.
The two-CD deluxe edition offers the 2013 remix of the original album on disc one, with all the encores on CD 2 (i.e. the same as disc four from the CD box). The single CD version reverts back to the original 1972 mix, albeit a 2013 remaster of the original mix. Unlike both box sets this doesn’t contain remixed audio. This single disc is actually the only place amongst all the formats that you can get the original 1972 mix remastered on CD.
The 2LP vinyl version is also the 2013 remaster of the original 1972 mix across four sides of vinyl.
Finally the Pure Audio Blu-ray Audio will have both the 2013 remix and the original 1972 mix (remastered) in high resolution, but will not feature the full 1972 tour audio that is present in the big boxes.
Made In Japan will be reissued on 19 May 2014.

I still wonder how can I miss this in 2014…
Anyway’ I’m a client for the super deluxe 4 Cds + 1 DVD Boxset “at aresonable price”.
What to do?
I live in the south of France.
hello,
first of all please forgive me for my poor english…….
i just want the dvd of the “live Made In Japan”
how can i get it?
thank you
moshe
Well they did not quite cover all the bases on this one. Being a big fan of blu ray pure audio discs I was disappointed to see that they did not include all the tracks for us pure audio fans. Cannot claim lack of space on these discs. Note: Stones Grrr has 50 tracks on one disc.
Hi
How many 9lp boxes will be produced, how much limited it is?
Just give the straightfoward 4 disc set in a jewel case, or a 6 disc set with each show to two discs. No messing around with fancy boxes, books and DVDs. Too much to ask……..
Bought “Live In Japan” years ago.. the double CD is tempting because unlike this set it will have all the encores. Having said that, I think they picked the best tracks originally for the 1972 classic release. The alternative versions are still great but as I get older I look at my shelf space and bank balance more discriminately…..I too will be getting the blu-ray only, it’s a chance to hear the best at its best, and remixed too. Don’t know why the opportunity to do a 5.1 mix keeps going begging for these releases. And I wonder if the band recorded the ’73 tour of Japan? Setlist was much the same and by all accounts still a good show. What a deluxe release that could make…
The super deluxe box with 4 cd and 1 dvd has no hi-rez content? A 5.1 or 4.0 mix would have been nice. I think I will buy the blu-ray version.
Second that on the USA releases??? I have been holding off on buying the Live In Japan release because this was rumored to be in the works BUT as a six cd release with each date on two discs….not sure if I like the layout but I will take it!
I already have other issues from this short Japan Tour and only missing out one of the encores… so I will skip this release.
What about the USA? Any release dates?
This is awesome..cant wait !
Amazon pages have no information or even prices yet. Any idea how much these are lickly to be? I’d love the vinyl box but would have to get the floorboards strengthened!
I think the vinyl box is going to be £130+ but we’ll find out soon hopefully when it becomes available on Amazon.
Very tempted as only have the original album..Is anyone able to identify how the track times alter at each show – or how vastly different the arrangements/improvisations are e.g. will it be like hearing the Allmans or the Dead playing the same tune two nights in a row where it will be heaps different?
If not, I’m guessing it will be a little tedious -0 only the DVD will be of value
Thanks Paul – ps when is the store opening/
Is the book we can see in the 2-CD set picture the 60-pages hardcover one or a thinner softcover version? Thanks.
Has the (Pure Audio – Blu-ray Audio) release a 5.1 sound or is it basic 2.0 ?? Thanx for the response.
No, just 2.0. But you do get the remix and the original mix remastered.
Just ordered the super deluxe and pure audio versions , however it does somewhat annoy me that the super deluxe version doesn’t actually have the original album (remixed/remastered) as it was originally released with the tracks from the 3 shows
You do get it as a hi-res download, but not physical.
I reckon it’s a bit unfair that the DVD only comes with the 4 CD edition. This one us currently for sale for amost 80 pounds and to be honest only the DVD is interesting for me and for many other fans who already have the other special versions released in the 90s such as the “Live in Japan” with 3 CD’s and the remastered edition with 2 CDs.
Management is trying to force the fans to buy the 4CDs edition with the book and the DVD but I raise the question: Wouldn’t they raise even more money if that was included in one of the simpler editions or even as a stand alone DVD ?
