Bob Dylan / The Bootleg Series Vol. 11: The Basement Tapes complete

bob_bootleg

This November Sony/Legacy will issue volume 11 of Bob Dylan‘s enduring Bootleg Series, which in its deluxe box form is a 138 track ‘complete’ chronicle of the legendary Bob Dylan and The Band’s Basement Tapes recordings.

The music was recorded in 1967 as Dylan recovered from his motorcycle accident with Robbie Robertson, Rick Danko, Richard Manuel, Garth Hudson and, later, Levon Helm, in the basement of a small house, dubbed “Big Pink” by the group, in West Saugerties, New York. An official release was eventually issued in 1975 but although the musicians recorded over 100 songs, this featured only 16 tracks along with eight tracks from The Band without Dylan.

The Basement Tapes Complete is compiled from the original tapes (many found only recently, apparently) and features “every salvageable recording” from said tapes. Also, the performances are presented as close as possible to the way they were originally recorded in ’67 which presumably means they will lack the 1975 overdubs.

The deluxe edition is a six-CD set with the tracks running in mostly chronological order. This comes with a 120-page book with contains rare and unseen photos and memorabilia along with extensive liner notes.

As well as the 138-track Basement Tapes Complete deluxe edition, a cut down 38-track highlights set – The Basement Tapes Raw –  will be issued on two-CD and three-LP vinyl.

All formats are released on 3 November 2014 – as well as the links below everything can be pre-ordered from the Bob Dylan official store.

amazon.ca back to under $100

Ben

This is the holy grail! Bob Dylan sounds very relaxed on these recordings. Yes quite expensive, but the Raw edition isn’t enough for a real fan. They could have sold this as 6 individual discs. Lo-fi is only another style, and suits perfectly for old time country/archaic music like this, dealing with the roots of modern music. Bob Dylan at his best! He’s been dealing with the same themes on his newest records anyway, going back for the old music of his childhood. I look forward to listen to this. Lo-fi music is great for a great musician like him.

Andy

Great spot re: amazon.ca!!!

Cheers

ken

Yet again Amazon UK are charging a lot more for the de luxe edition than Amazon US. It works out at £90 in the US as against £110 in the UK. Even the 2 disc set is £7 cheaper in the US! Amazon are just greedy and alienating a lot of people.

ronnie

Great price on amazon.ca (CAD 93) for the deluxe set amounts to about £52!

C Feeney

Another thank you for the Canada price.

Martijn

Darn, too late. It seems to be back up to CAD $150 again. :(
Oh well, back to spot-the-deal again…

Fat Old Bloke

I’ll just get the 2CD set unless the deluxe set drops considerably in price.

C Feeney

This is a long awaited set and for me the only time a Dylan deluxe has been tempting – all the others I bought the two disc sets. Some of us will pre-order as a knee jerk reaction – as the pre-order price guarantee helps. But I agree that £110 or $150 is a bit much when you can get the 9 disc mono box for a lot less and that has the much more significant work. You could probably get the complete albums for a similar price still.

Realistically this set will be competing with the Beatles and Led Zeppelin for space under the Christmas tree, so I don’t expect the price to stand after release date.

Sean

Go to the Bob dylan site for better prices, Amazon once again trying to fleece customers !

Clarky (great white wonder)

It’s yet another joke from Dylan and Sony. It’s a very expensive box set that should be priced at around the £40 range. A lot of the tracks on this are very lo-fi as Dougie Adam has said.
This ‘Bootleg Series’ has been littered with over-priced releases, re: ‘Tell Tale Signs’ 3CD set for £122 on (of course) Amazon at the mo.
‘Another Self Portrait’ 4CD set for £74, and that’s cheap for it!
Thanks Mr Dylan, but you’ve made a mint over the years but you really don’t serve your fans well at all. We’ve bought all your stuff, and then you and your record company whack out a ‘complete albums’ box set last year that makes folks feel the need the buy the stuff all over again, and folks who’ve not really been into Dylan at all get ALL the albums in a nifty box for next to nowt on the scheme of things. Cheers.
Sorry for the rant!

Philip Cohen

Wait a few months and you’ll see the set being offered at a discount, though not by Amazon. Lately, the folks running Amazon.com have been trying to scorch the Baby Boomer market by trying to hang tough at (or sometimes above ) list price on CD & vinyl boxed sets. This is one of several reasons why I no longer buy CD’s or L.P.’s from Amazon.com

Without competitive pricing, there’s no reason to buy from Amazon. Incredibly, when first accepting preorders for The Beatles mono vinyl box, Amazon was trying to scorch people at $409.95…..$35 over list price. Fortunately, no consumer actually had to pay $409.95, but list price($374.95, what Amazon charges now) is no bargain either. Amazon’s shareholders want to see a bigger return on their investment, but alienating customers into going elsewhere is a misguided strategy. It’s easy to alienate the customers into walking away, but it won’t be easy to bring them back, after Amazon executives realize the error of their ways.

Barry Whiting

I guess this puts pay to speculation that a second volume of the ‘Complete Album Collection’ boxset focusing on the bootleg series might drop this year or next. Certainly on price point anyway…

Could be an expensive month if rumours re: a Springsteen box are true…

Dougie Adam

£110+ on Amazon UK for the 6 CD set. Sony, predictably, are having a laugh with the price. While I have no doubt the sound and packaging and number of tracks will surpass the old 5CD bootlegs from the 1990s, the fact remains these were recorded for fun on a 2 track reel to reel recorder and are not professionally made recordings. Lots of the songs were only performed once or twice and then forgotten because they were not serious songwriting efforts. To be charging almost £20 per disc for the complete package really is taking the rip out of fans – £50-60 would be a lot fairer even allowing for restoration work and packaging.

Mychael

re. ”…to be charging almost £20 per disc for the complete package really is taking the rip out of fans – £50-60 would be a lot fairer… “
Do you really think CD prices are calculated on the “artistic” worth of the music or if the tracks in question are “serious efforts”?

Tman

Get the Deluxe 6-CD set under $100, come on.

C Feeney

At last!

I shall have to ask my Doctor if salivating for two months will pose a health risk.

I shall spend the time re-reading Invisible Republic in readiness.

John Ireland

Been waiting on this since forever. The Bootleg Series has been a fascinating trawl so far.

Mike the Fish

I’m not even a Dylan or The Band fan, but this looks really good.
