Would still have to be End of The World from Document 1st Album I heard
Fall On Me
My fave is “It’s the End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)”
It’s about time I won something – anything!!!
‘The One I Love’ – Stipe’s lyrics move on from the ambiguous to the downright dark. And don’t you love all those idiots who dedicate the song to their loved one without actually listening to the words?!!
Fall on me!!
One of my favorite songs is not truly one that they wrote, but a cover of one. DREAM (ALL I HAVE TO DO IS DREAM) One of the first songs I heard from them.
Shiny happy people <3
FALL ON ME!!!! Buy the sky and sell the sky
And tell the sky, and tell the sky!! GReat!
It’s the end of the world
Don’t Go Back To Rockville
The one I love, good memories ;-)
My pick is Fall On Me
I was in junior high when my friends and I first heard REM. First song, and still a go to, is Carnival of Sorts.
The one I love – could listen to that all day
Fall on me.
Sitting Still.
Talk About the Passion – coming from a French area, we all knew “combien”, but couldn’t tell if he was singing that, or “count me in”.
Superman, always my favourite.
Hard to choose really, but if I had to choose one: Fall on me
The One I Love!
Probably “Orange Crush”, first time I saw them live was on that tour!
Probably my favorite is the original Hiptone version of “Radio Free Europe” as it was the first time I had heard the band back in 1981 (if memory serves).
Superman! Love this track!
It’s the End of the World As We Know It – I used to live near Cleveland OH, and the local alternative rock station WENZ 107.9 started off by playing this non-stop for 24hrs. I’d moved back to the UK when the station was replaced by something less brilliant – apparently they signed off by playing it again, it really was The End….
Ages of You (b-side of Wendell Gee). Not very well known, but instrumentally and lyrically (where the musical/tonal quality of the words was more important than the straight denotations) the epitome of the I.R.S. years.
No contest – Fall on Me
Superman
“Can’t get there from here” … so true ….
“World Leader Pretend”, great lyrics, great cello
Pop Song ’89
Fall on me, amazing song :)
Fall On Me.
It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) – very catchy tune – gets in your head!
orange crush
One of the best bands of all times, IRS era simply superb
The Flowers of Guatemala.
P.S. Didn’t I alert you to this release? Does that count for anything? ;)
Favorite track of the I.R.S. era? That would be “Laughing” from _Murmur_ — the playing of Berry, Buck and Mills is so beautifully separated and each is so virtuosic. It sounds otherworldly but still also sounds like it could be played in your basement.
It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)…is an all time classic!
white tornado is my favourite in the era
Hard choice between two tunes I’m afraid.
It’ll be either Stumble (as the Chronic Town was my first introduction at the time) or She Just Wants To be (for more – very – private reasons. love that tune to bits…)
It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Orange Crush
Wendell Gee. Totally floored when I first heard this on (i’m sure) Janice Long’s evening show, and umpteen years later this track still does it for me.
That would be “The one I love”.
Perfect Circle

It’s been a bad day
“Driver 8″……this week anyway.
Oddfellows Local 151
Gardening At Night
My all-time fav: Nightswimming.
So many great tracks, but since I have to pick just one, I must go with “Driver 8,” since it’s the best.
Talk about the passion is my favourite
My favourite tune of REMs altogether is I Believe. Love the banjo opening to it and it’s so totally catchy. Of course REM is quite good at a catchy tune!
Disturbance at the Heron House is to me the perfect R.E.M. song, a good balance between their past and hinting at what was to come, a song on the cusp.
that’s a tough one: maybe “Everybody Hurts” today, may be another one tomorrow ;-)
sorry, it said IRS years: so maybe “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville” (because you always come back to your first love…)
The One I Love
Reminds me of being at University
The one I love

From this era probably Fall on Me is the track I remember most

I moved to the States in 1988. One record that was all over the local Boston station, WFNX was Finest Worksong. Will always be remembered as a song that helped me ‘adjust’ and hey I’m still here…..
The One I Love – what a way to be introduced to such a great band.
the one I love.
Wow! Very nice vinyl box set!
Fall On Me is my favorite. The harmonies are spiritual, and the chorus is hypnotic. Brings me close to tears on almost every listen. One of my all-time favorites by anyone!!!
Fall on Me
Has to be Fall on Me :)
Swan Swan H…
what noisy cats are we..
Fall On Me.
They were all great, but I submit Oddfellows Local 151. In a pre-wiki world, I could imagine they were singing about the Oddfellows’ fortress* of a building overlooking the Thames River (the one in Connecticut, rhymes with aims.) It was a senior citizens home, and therefore a potential source for pearls of wisdom.
* It may well have doubled as a fortress, as that entire stretch of river has been gearing up for Benedict Arnold’s Second Coming for the last two centuries.
I am Superman – love it!
Everybody Hurts – iconic…
Time after time etc. from Finest Worksong 12″.
Driver 8 for me!!
Finest Worksong

If I really have to choose, it’s “Fall On Me”. But please don’t make me choose.

The One I Love and its dark lyrics. What kind of ballad relishes in the use of “fire!”. Moody , broody and damn great.
Mine is “So Central Rain”. Never get tired of it
Orange Crush
The first R.E.M. song I ever heard was ‘Don’t Go Back To Rockville’ from “Reckoning”, so that’s the one.
File Under Water
This one goes out to the one I love
The One I Love is a classic.
Perfect Circle

IRS era best song ‘finest worksong’.
Definetly “End of the World As We Know It”.
The One I Love
Radio Free Europe – watching them live in Dublin in the mid 1980’s
The One I Love!!!
‘Cuyahoga’ from Lifes Rich Pageant is my favourite song by R.E.M.

I’m kind of in a ‘Harborcoat’ mood today.
So. Central Rain (I’m Sorry) is my favorite from the album “Reckoning” but Fall On Me from Life’s Rich Pageant is a close second.
I pick up The One I Love… and I’m keepin’ my fingers crossed :)
Too many to choose from but I will say Driver 8.
“The One I Love”
The end of the world as we know it
“Driver 8” is easily my favorite.
Don’t Go Back To Rockville is very hard to beat.
it has to be a tie between Driver 8 and The One I Love
‘The One I Love’ because of the girl I first heard this from and who I later married.

The ‘Time After Time/Red Rain/So. Central Rain’ acoustic medley from the Finest Worksong 12″. Was a fan before; with this track they became a favorite
Looks sweet!!
Orange Crush is the best for me!!
My 1st song that I heard from R.E.M. was South Central Rain and it is still my favorite
Of coure – The One I Love. Memories, memories ;-D
Hi, fave IRS era track (out of many) has to be “(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville”.
First I heard was the Chronic Town EP. Still partial to Murmur and Lifes Rich Pageant. Fall On Me is superb.
Got to be Don’t Go Back to Rockville – competition closes 2 days before my 50th birthday, what a lovely present this would be!!!!
Some awesome answers for this one. I’ve enjoyed just reading the stories.
I have to go with Begin the Begin off of Life’s Rich Pageant.
Out of Time was my first REM album (cassette, naturally), but LRP was the first IRS album I owned. My aunt gave it to me as a birthday gift and that opening riff and those drums just kicked my adolescent brain something fierce! It wins by a landslide because it kicked open the doors to their back catalog in a HUGE way.
The One I Love …..IT WAS FIIIIIIIIIIRE!!!!!
Rockville
They are all my favourites how can you choose.
So this is just a lucky dip. So. Central Rain.
Can’t Get There From Here
Wendell Gee!
I won the 7 inch single on a radio phone in competition back in the day. All the other singles I received where rubbish, except a 7 inch of Hangin On A String by Loose Ends.
So. Central Rain!
Fall On Me.
Fall On Me
It has to be Radio Free Europe.
It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine) for me – surreal stream-of-consciouness lyrics around a catchy chorus. Brilliant.
Simple: Gardening at Night
“Fall on Me”–excellent!
My fave was always Crazy – the Pylon cover. Michael’s voice in this is amazing!!
…never win …maybe now it’s time!!!
(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville is my fave
Their live version of King of Birds always blows me away. But favourite song that’s too tough. But for today let’s say it’s KoB.
This one goes out to “the one I love”…
Radio Free Europe for me too.
The One I Love!
Disturbance at the Heron House
Tough choice! Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars) is a special one for me though.
Perfect Circle from Murmur. Still takes my breath away.
Fall on me
It’a the end of the world aa we know it (and I feel fine)
Has to be Finest Worksong…
Losing my Religion
Driver 8
Exhuming McCarthy
I’m rare in that I mostly prefer REM after Bill left (‘Up’ is their best album for me) but the best track from the IRS years is ‘Perfect Circle’.
The One I love.
SUPERB SONG
Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars) is the one that hooked me and keeps me coming back.
It’s the End of the World as we know it… still very apt!
Fall on me
The one I love is… ;-)
Murmur was such an incredible album. When everyone else was listening to M.J’s Thriller, I was spreading the word about R.E.M.
Moral Kiosk would be in my top 25 songs of all time.
Many to choose from. Driver 8
The correct answer is “Cuyahoga”.

So. Central Rain for me
We didn’t start the fire by Billy jo….. oh hang on, i mean It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
I’ll have to choose It’s the End Of the World As We Know It … though the Time After Time Live medley is pretty good too!
Swan Swan H. Stupendous when they played it in Edinburgh on the “Green” tour.
Orange Crush!
For me now it is Orange Crush. I remember being at their Balloch gig down Loch Lomond and whilst playing the One I Love, somebody threw a pint on stage (good throw considering the distance!) and it landed right next to Scott McCaughey and he was furious!!! So much so he stopped playing and Stipe had to calm him down and request the crowd calm it or they might walk off…the crowd stopped but who knows if they would have walked off? Great gig though and REM were on top form. So that song has always been a favourite but that personal story from a gig I was at just compounds it, ha!
Edit : For me now it’s the One I Love.
Fall On Me
Catapult off Murmur
The

The one I love
So. Central Rain, I think.
Fall On ME!
Talk About The Passion – Love at first in the first listening !
Am I the only one that adores Welcome to the Occupation?
The whole of the Document album is a personal favourite, so for me, I choose Finest Worksong
The One I Love & Perfect Circle. Can’t really say which one is better
“Fall on Me” is THE track for me!!
I been in only one show during monster tour…it was bad…but this band changed my life….especially the mandoline years
No question. Superman.
It was the song that opened R.E.M. up to me after I borrowed the Pageant album from the local library on cassette!
I love Talk About The Passion
Losing my religion
Changes all the time, but for now: “Disturbance At The Heron House”.
Tough one but i’d go with ‘Gardening at night’
Need their songs as I need to breathe…
Driving 3 hours to Cologne in the early 90’s to see them live at a free outdoor concert, only to find out that the place was full when getting there. Eventually saw the concert on a big screen just outside the main square.
These Days
Feeling Gravitys Pull
(If I had to pick just ONE…
Can I change my mind yet?)
Got to be ‘ It’s The End Of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Brilliant and uplifting!!

Perfect Circle.
The one i love!
Begin the Begin…. But it’s so difficult to choose : )
Mmm. Superman, at least it is today.
Radio free Europe
Let’s say… “Driver 8”
Pretty Persuasion.
I have loved this band since Murmer and the first song I heard was `Radio Free Europe`, that`s still my favourite.
At the moment it’s got to be ‘These Days’ from Life’s Rich Pageant – that rush into the chorus is stupidly exciting!
FINEST WORKSONG always did it for me. Hope I win, it will give me an excuse to buy a turntable!!!
Fall on Me
It changes daily, but today I’ll say Harborcoat
Cuyahoga
Swan, Swan H
Fall On Me
It would have to be The One I Love.
the one i love. thanks in advance very nice it is too.
The One I Love!
I love It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)
Oh…and Fall On Me gets my vote.
The one I love would be my favourite.
Another competition I wont win…but its fun trying!
I’ve been a fan for sometime now. First I heard was So. Central Rain when Reckoning came out.
hard to pick one in such an extensive catalog.
It was between fall on me and talk about the passion, and finally I pick Fall on me. Such a beautiful melody and vocal harmonies, awesome tune.
Great band, great box..
“Talk About The Passion”
Fall on me
hmm.. maybe So. Central Rain
Fall On Me – great song.
it has to be – the one I love. I remember buying this cd single when it came out
Fall On Me, it had more passion and resonance than anything I had heard as a wee lad living in a decade where a song like We Built This City could top the charts. It never gets old.
Driver 8 has to be my favorite!
That’s a tough one. I feel like my favorite R.E.M. shifts back and forth between 5-6 songs depending on, well, who knows what. Last week it was “So. Central Rain” but I think right now it’s “Feeling Gravitys Pull”.
Wendel Gee
The One I Love. Pop masterpiece.
I love the “i am superman” era!
finest work song. ..though so me again next week and it could be Fall on me
So. Central Rain is my favorite.
Don’t Go Back to Rockville
So many great ones to choose from, but I must go with “Everybody Hurts”.
… pick another one if you want this set… songs from the IRS era. Everybody hurts is a Warner era song.
The cover of Strange on Document. Don’t know why, I normally don’t like remakes but this one hooked me.
These Days!
Got to be “Fall On Me”. Always loved it and was totally blown away by the unplugged version.
Favourite track – Driver 8 from “Fables..”
Finest Worksong.
It’s The End Of The World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine). First song of theirs I heard.
‘Orange Crush’ does it for me every time – it’s the template for a perfect REM track in guitar and vocal arrangements and just conjures images of 1970’s ‘gumshoe’ movies like The Long Goodbye………..
Wasnt this on Warner not IRS?
My first favourite R.E.M. single would have to be Driver 8
i have always loved Feeling Gravity’s Pull and Wendell Gee. so many great tracks to choose from.
Fall On Me
Finest Worksong.
The one I love.
Nice prize….I was a tad obsessed with R.E.M back in the 80’s (I’m better now – although I’d love to get my paws on this for old times sake).
Favourite IRS track??? Begin The Begin (a lost single if there ever was one)
This is tough. I’ll go with “Perfect Circle” from Murmur.
The first song by R.E.M. I heard as a young guy was So. Central Rain. Good memories.
ORANGE JUICE = NICE X
My alltime favorit is FALL ON ME.
Fall On Me.
(Don’t Go Back To) Rockville is my Fave
The One I Love
there are too many to choose from…ok, superman!
CUYAHOGA
