  1. Some sellers have a 20% off deal happening the moment on eBay (usual suspects in the offer – Chalkys, Music Magpie etc) – I picked up the new Dodgy box set for £43.

I also noted that you can get the great big new Black Francis CD box for £53 and the Matt Berry Gather Up CD box set for £21.

Deal ends on Thursday, discount code is BAG20. Worth having a look if you’re in the market for something at the moment.

    1. Good tip Matt. I am keen to get a number of the Grapefruit (label) compilations, but they work out the same as Amazon even after the 20%, at least on Music Magpie.

However, there are a lot of genuinely good deals so worth searching.

      1. Thanks Joel, I missed it, bummer BUT, thanks to you I ordered the new Robert Fripp box for only $172. I also ordered the new Grandmaster Flash box for $36. For anyone interested the 10% discount code is CD69FV852. So if you order the U2 Achtung Baby Uber box, the price now would be $390. That’s a no brainer if you have the money.

        1. Glad you saw that Robert Fripp deal! So many temptations. Would love the U2, but even at that price, and considering space in my collection I think I will just go for the recent 30th double vinyl. My priority at the moment is the David Bowie Brilliant Adventure vinyl box.

  2. on a separate note if anyone else ordered the lana del ray banisters package which included a signed art card UM have just very casually mentioned that the art card is no longer available and is cancelled. how they can get away with conning people into buying a package and then removing the unique item i will never know.

    1. Its even worse that it initially seems The LDR store had already despatched the unsigned elements of the bundle and charged the full price to cards at time of release.
In order to compensate for the lack of signed print, they are now refunding purchasers £5.
So Lane Del Rey’ store value her signature at a measly £5!!

      1. It’s the natural follow-up to Lorde’s cd without a cd – a signed photo that you have to imagine is so much better for the planet!

Or maybe because she’s written so many albums lately her pen just ran out of ink?

    2. Hi have raised a complaint with paypal, UM are useless at following through and addressing paypal claims, i expect to get a full refund without having to send back the two coloured vinyl albums that were dispatched at the time. They technically are in breach of accepting paypal payments because their contact number is not working.

  3. My £27 Goats Head Soup-er deluxe arrived from rarewaves, and even though it was fairly well packed in cardboard it still has minor dings on the corners. I think I’m done with them now. An item arriving in imperfect condition takes the shine off even the best bargains.

  4. The Stones’ Goat’s Head Soup 3CD/Blu-Ray box set is cheap again on Amazon UK at just over £38.
However cheapest current deal is probably from MusicMagpie via ebay – under £31, or about £26 if you can use the Nectar Card code NECT15OFF (which I think expires on 15th March).

  5. I know it’s not a physical release and it’s been released to game the charts a bit, but the Boo Radleys have a digital edition of their new album for £4.99 on their official store (Google ‘Boo Radleys Store’) that includes a 10 track live album recorded in 2021 that’s available only until Thursday (available to download as FLAC, so decent quality).

(Fairly content that across the 2CD edition that I have with its 9 studio recordings bonus track CD and the additional 10 track digital live album, it’s a decent new release for £16 BUT I do wish they’d simply put out a 3CD version with all the tracks on it in the first place.)

    1. Thanks for the tip – I’m happy with the 2CD so I’m not going to jump for this but it’s an interesting entry in the ever-growing canon of extra formats, price cuts etc in release week.

  6. A handful of deals on Amazon UK

Black Sabbath – Sabotage Super Deluxe CD box is £27

Ian Dury – Do It Yourself Super Deluxe is £34

Robert Plant – Digging Deep vinyl singles box is £60

And Chalkys are selling Joni Mitchell’s Archives Vol 1 for £38.

    1. Regarding the Robert Plant vinyl box, it says on the main page it’s £58 but when you try to buy it, the lowest price is actually £86. I have seen this many times on Amazon. You see the low price and think “wow that’s a great price, let me click on it”, and then the low price is not among the prices that are listed.

        1. Ok so this is good, we are getting closer to solving the mystery. It must be a geo thing. If you are in the UK, you get it for £60.74. When I pull it up from the USA it shows the £60.74 but when I click on it, the lowest price is £86. The other geo thing is when I don’t even see the £60.74 but that’s not the case here. Anyway, now I understand the mystery of seeing a price and then never being able to actually buy it for that price.

  7. Wow, just managed to snag Franz Ferdinand 2LP Hits To The Head for £11.99 off Amazon. Back up to £27.99 a minute or so after I placed the order. Not sure what’s going on there.

    1. Thanks Paul – duly purchased and delivered by Amazon today.
A first for me re Amazon in that there was no packaging whatsoever other than the cellaphone wrap!
Record was fortunately fine but can imagine if this is the method to be used going forward there
will be a lot of complaints/returned items due to damage to the sleeve edges etc.

  8. The Bluetones’ 6CD Superior Quality Recordings (Signed Edition) box set has a couple of £££ off, down to £34 on Amazon UK.

Also Music Magpie are selling the Rolling Stones Goats Head Soup Super Deluxe 3CD/BR box set for £30 on eBay (£33 with an 8% discount code)

        1. Got it eventually, thank you chaps, I misread it and couldn’t understand why it wasn’t accepting the code on Music Magpie’s main website and then read it again and saw it was indeed through their eBay store. Doh! Thanks again though!

  9. Funkadelic ‘Maggot Brain’ 50th Anniversary edition, 2 X vinyl, is available to pre-order on Ace Records website. £23.79 with free UK delivery. Thought it was a good price.

    1. I got it on CD for around £80, couldn’t justify the price of the vinyl version, the CD version is a good plan B as it’s far cheaper and the packaging is very good as the CDs are in plastic dust sleeves which stops them getting scratched when you pull them out of the wallets. Worth considering is all I’m saying.

      1. Thanks Stevie, It dropped down to £287 so I succumbed, my bruv got the CDs so they’re in my iTunes, I got all the other boxes on vinyl so want to complete the set, £287 on the high side but can’t see it going any lower

        1. Its £248 now in Amazon France! Use the SDE link on Paul’s original post to get there. When it was
launched, Amazon.Fr was clearly cheaper than anywhere else, and seems to have stayed the lowest.
After a week or two I bit at their original low price of £280-ish when everywhere else was still over £300. If you’re happy to buy from abroad (and I am) then £248 seems a pretty good price!

    2. In my experience these Bowie boxes don’t come down much in price. You have to take advantage of a 3 for 2 promotion that Amazon Germany has every year or something alike to really get a deal. I bought my cd box for $93 (£71) through Importcds.com when they had a 10% off promo late last year. The vinyl boxes come down a little more simply because they are so expensive to begin with but overall there is very little wiggle room with these Bowie box prices. One thing I learnt over the years; patience, patience, patience.

  10. Re Caught Beneath the Landslide I bought this when originally released as was at university when a lot of this music first came out and went to see a lot of these bands at the time.

I would proceed with caution before buying this as while some good stuff on here there is an awful lot that hasn’t stood the test of time.

Menswear, Powder, Heavy Stereo, Northern Uproar for example. Pretty awful at the time to be fair and not gotten any better.

Some poor remixes – Dust Brothers remix of Jailbird for example. Awful cover versions – Cardigans doing Thin Lizzy.

The best stuff is generally from bands who have stood the test of time – Pulp, Radiohead, New Order.

I would listen to the set before buying as can’t see me returning to this set that often.

      1. It wasn’t really a warning. I just think you can get swept up by nostalgia sometimes as I think I did when buying this and stuff you may have listened to at the time hasn’t necessarily aged that well.

A lot of thee bands were riding the indie wave of the 90’s and there is an awful lot of plodding stuff on here.

There are some great bands on here and some perhaps slightly less well known great bands like The Auteurs but there are far better ways to explore 90’s indie music than through this compilation.

      2. TBF to Dylan68, I think they have a point here. They’re clearly a genre fan (‘went to see a lot of these bands’) and I’m always inclined to listen to fans like Dylan68 when a compilation like this comes up.

There will always be a tension, when curating and issuing these genre-based 4CD packages, between trotting out the familiar (a ‘Best of Britpop’) and compiling the obscure. Eddie Piller does the latter to superb effect for the genres he loves.

However, the risk in curating the obscure is that too many of the items included are ‘barrel scrapers’ – songs that are obscure for the good reason that they’re not actually very good. So, thank you Dylan68. I will approach this compilation with due caution and maybe listen out for some of these pothole moments you’ve identified.

Feedback like Dylan68’s is vital to the success of a site like SDE. If we buy everything on spec because the package looks good at face value then we are the fools from whose money we are all easily parted.

        1. It was £16 for a nicely put together 4CD compilation of stuff that represents the era quite well through material that (mostly) isn’t the bog standard fare you usually get with “Best Of Britpop” type records.

As a teenager right through Britpop, I really like the compilation, even though I don’t like every single song on it.

Don’t buy it if you don’t like the majority of the music on it. I’m really confused as to why that’s a difficult concept or why it needs further explanation.

      3. I think it’s a great compilation and the remixes are great in particular the Dust Brothers mix of Primal Scream’s Jailbird which I bought the CD single of and remains one of my bargain buys of the day at the time as it was 99p for 38 mins worth of music due to the 5 mixes including the original of the song in question. Also included was the classic Portishead mix of Paul Weller’s Wild Wood which I have on a 7″ that came with the NME at the time, what’s not to like?

    1. I think it’s a very good point. It’s the same with many of these Cherry Red compliations too. They seem really great, but when getting into the details, the choice of tracks turns out to be below average (either because of licensing reasons, or trying to find more obscure material). It’s ok to have obscure tracks in this type of compilations, as long as they are at least as good as the non-obscure ones. So while agreeing with the general point, I must say that I do like menswear :)

      1. Consider what happened with the 60s garage/psych/beat reissue comps: way back when they first started emerging in the late 70s, they were a mix of hits and obscurities. Eventually, the market split, so that for the past 25 years or so you get either collections of classics aimed at novices or the nostalgia market, or sets of rarities aimed at obsessive cultists (erm … like me).

I expect that if (God willing) physical media continues to be produced, eventually we’ll see the same sort of thing happen to 80s and 90s comps.

    2. I almost bought this in advance back whenever, then I thought to myself – I lived through this, most of it was fine at the time but either it doesn’t work as nostalgia or I don’t.

Then it came down to £16 or whatever, price of a book! Ach, go on then.

A couple of the artists on this are currently helping Alice (my daughter) with her BIMM course – it’s a bizarre thing.

  11. Re: Caught In A Landslide….

Just to clarify, it is the Brendan Lynch mix of Champagne Supenova, not his Lynchmob Beat Mix which I suspect is what everyone was hoping for.

    1. Yeah I thought it was the Lynchmob Beat mix which I have on a promo 12″ that was on that compilation but was glad it was a different mix which I didn’t know he’d done as I thought he’d only done the Beat Mix as I hadn’t got the mix that was included tho’ I have a feeling it might be on the remastered Morning Glory album as a CD bonus track.

      1. Nah it’s the same version as on this Landslide box. I have the promo 12″ too, so happy to keep it’s value up, but I would love the track on CD. I reckon a minion at Sony f*cked up. They really need people involved who know what they’re doing and know the tracks.

    2. It still claims to be unavailable when I try to purchase. Has anyone actually managed to order this via the deal.
When I add to basket it says 15 left in stock (as of 13.30) but when I proceed to checkout I get an error message saying it’s not currently available.

  12. Probably banged on about this enough on here but the Caught Beneath The Landslide: The Other Side of Britpop and the ‘90s 4CD box set (with signed print from Kevin Cummins) has carried on dropping to a really fantastic £16. It’s a really nice tracklist of not-the-usual suspect singles, b-sides or non album versions (e.g. the Oasis track is Champagne Supernova, but it’s the Brendan Lynch single mix rather than the normal album version).

    https://amzn.to/3IP6lJ1

    1. A bit of an odd one. I noticed this about a week ago on Amazon but it never appeared to be actually available, hence why I didn’t post on here. The price kept on going lower and lower but every time I added it to my basket, over the course of several days, and tried to checkout it became unavailable. Now officially not available. The version without the signed print is about £23 still which is about £12 cheaper than high street chain store

  13. Not a ruse that appeals to me but, Amazon used to do this all the time but then they seemed to close the loophole. Similar to the recent Garbage listing here, buy the standard version of the CD and get an autorip of the deluxe edition. Here’s a couple I found:

    Lemonheads – It’s a Shame About Ray

    https://amzn.to/3sMY6r9

The Velevet Underground eponymous third album

    https://amzn.to/3CrCgN5

Obviously it’s MP3 for the autorip and probably wise to download as soon as.

    1. Just looked at that and it would appear you’re correct though one point of note is that the standard CD is a “manufactured CD-R” according to the Amazon listing for the Lemonheads one. I’m sure that’d be ok and I have like that of James’ Wah Wah album before it was reissued in the box set with Laid but it’s something potential purchasers of the James album should be aware of.

  14. Price drop: PULSE (Restored & Re-Edited) blu ray at 45U$ Amazon.com (17 % off), Jethro Tull Benefit Box set at 37 $cad (29 % off) (Amazon.ca). Jamiroquai Travelling Without Moving (25th Anniversary Edition) 2 yellow vinyls set at 45 $cad (30 % off)…Black SabbathSabotage (Super Deluxe Edition CDs at 48 $ cad…Rush Clockwork Angels Tour (5 LPs Vinyl box) at 122 $cad (28 % off)…

  15. Just saw, on Amazon US, they are selling that Bluetones “Superior Quality Recordings” 6CD SIGNED box for $54.99US…great deal, jumped on it cuz there were, like, 4 left…looks like it’s designed just like that amazing Dodgy box, with the sturdy square design, inner drawer, CD wallets with 2 discs in each, inside, one on the left & right, signed pic & clear bag of buttons…I guess Brits call em badges…hopped on this cuz last year, tried ordering it twice, once on importCDs, and it either got cancelled or lost in the post, now’s my chance to finally get it, signed too…I may get the RSD vinyl, great band…

  16. Not necessarily a deal, although it may be. I just got a David Bowie email saying that the Brilliant Live Adventures will be available again in the fall. The “whole series” it said.

      1. The message was very vague – “We are HOPING the whole series will become available in the Autumn” – not even a definite commitment at this stage.
They say they will email again with pre-order info when they have details.
It’s a holding email basically. I’m not expecting anything anytime soon.

      2. That’s what I was wondering. It must be each one separately because so many were complaining about missing one or two and that’s what they wanted to remedy if I remember correctly.

    1. I got the same message and whilst I’m not holding my breath as to when or if that will happen it’s interesting news as I don’t have any of them but would like to get them.

  17. There’s a really random offer on at Amazon DE which seems to be knocking up to 5% off a few bits and pieces. There doesn’t seem to be a pattern to what’s on offer but an example is Dylan’s 4CD Another Self Portrait has £2.65 off, which puts it down to £50 (great price).

Worth having a look if there’s something you’re in the market for.

      1. I bought that Motown box a year or two ago, price was cheap like that, or so I thought…the shipping cost was like $30, so it brought the price back up to the non-sale price…ah I’ll live, I thought…it’s a cool box with the replica house/studio, front/top lifts off, discs (yes with the bonus 11th disc) & booklet nicely coloured & organized, all in a clean, clear plastic case/outer box…dunno what I would call it cuz without the house inside, it’s kinda flimsy…

  18. Depeche Mode Ultra | The 12″ Singles (Vinyl box set) at 92U$ (Amazon.com) or 120 $ cad (Amazon.ca). (as of March 3).Amy Winehouse At The BBC (3LP) for 56 $ cad (Amazon.ca).
    Good day all.

    1. I dunno, I have it and mine is ok, I bought mine for slightly more than the discounted price at £24 and whilst yes it has the additional surface noise that one associates with a picture disc given that it is a piece of paper surrounded by 2 bits of plastic as that is how picture discs are made and why they are a little bit more noisy than a standard LP but with that being said for a picture disc pressing it’s fine.

      1. Well, pal, now we know why not to buy them. But why buy them then ? Do you sit in your comfy chair someday and look admiringly at one side for the duration of side 1, then turn them around …? Or, is it for investment, in the hope that, later, you find a sucker who will beg for them and cough up. That is something that very seldom works for non-professionals, certainly if you take inflation and the funds’ unavailability into consideration. What is it ? … Looking forward to finally, after decades, understand the value of picture discs !

        1. Mi-Trav: Salud! Your post caught my eye, even though I’m not at all weighing the purchase of the Bowie Pic-disc (or any other). I’m with you. All respect, but I don’t understand. Decades ago, I saw a record store clerk show a picture disc to an interested customer and explain that it would not sound good, but “that’s the trade for having a picture on a record.” Wait… What? If you want a picture of Bowie, buy a picture of Bowie. If the cover of Hunky Dory trips your trigger, put the record sleeve on the wall. At least you won’t have grooves running through Dave’s face and a spindle hole in the middle of his soon-to-be-coke-fried nose. I’ve never understood why you’d pay for a record made to sound bad, especially when that record is as killer as Hunky Dory. But hey, that cow left the pressing plant barn a long time ago. Obviously there are enthusiasts aplenty for these things. Hey, enjoy. There are weirder fetishes. But riddle me this: WHY do picture discs sound bad? And do they have to? Apparently not. A friend brought an ELP picture disc over one night – I think it was the first one – raving about the sound. The pressing was immaculate. It was as good as any other record, frankly better than many. So, while I don’t think I am going to suddenly become a pic disc guy, I’d love to know why some of these things actually do what they are supposed to do, and others just look pretty. Kind of. Maybe. Sorta.

          1. Today’s picture discs use an inferior manufacturing process (virtually made in a shed – Google it) compared to those from the 1970’s/80’s and those earlier discs are very playable by comparison.

          2. Do they really? Google has the answers to everything, doesn’t it. It is a search engine that links results based on key words.
I have p.i.l.- album & yello – point. Both picture discs, both really good sound quality, Better than some Black vinyl I own. Sure there is surface noise on the intro until the actual track starts, but that’s it….the yello pic disc is stunning audio quality. Crisp, clean.
A lot of comments towards audio quality also depends upon the system it is played on. Is it well balanced/matched. Have you just added a turntable to an existing set up without a phono stage, or still using a built in/ line only. Lots of permutations that can influence a sound path. You can’t expect a disc to deliver something your system is capable of delivering in first place.

          3.  My first picture disc – ‘Run to the Hills ‘ – Iron Maiden, 1981 ? and i still have it, sounds not too bad

          4. Back on the 80s I used to have pic discs of Bon Jovi “Slippery When Wet” & Cinderella “Night Songs”…both sounded fine & was kinda neat watching the album covers spin with the arm moving across it…don’t have those anymore but still like those 2 albums…

      2. I’ll buy the occasional pic disc…bought the Prince “Sign O The Times” RSD pic disc (more like design discs), and it sounds fine, if a drop noisier…a friend buys all the Beatles pic discs & they sound fine to him…me, I won’t buy that Bowie…have it on CD in that “Five Years” era box…

        1. The first thing you see in my hallway is my first picture disc, Madness House of Fun, little me loved going into WH Smith Slough and looking for picture discs, I bought the Hunky Dory for nostalgia reasons, and mainly because it was £20 lol, I don’t think I’ve ever played a picture disc, but in our hobby without logic, why would you?

          1. It is not a hobby without logic it is a collecting disease which makes you do illogical things. I have done this a lot in the past and still do it sometimes now and it is a disease. Who here hasn’t bought something to finish a set with no intention of either listening or reading it. Who hasn’t bought an expensive box set and the best bit is the unboxing not the music. This is not a hobby with a future and not just because the record companies want us to just buy downloads but because it is not good for us or our families (must get to the postman first so no one sees what I’ve just bought “what that box set I’ve had it years”)
We should all listen to more and buy much, much less. Its cheaper, more rewarding and can remind you why you loved music to begin with. I have to say we don’t need the music in our hands, sorry.
I clearly need a happy pill and should never post again. Again sorry.

          2. You make good sense. It is some form of mental illness I suspect. Exaggerated fear of missing out. Does anybody really need 12 different colours of Paul McCartney 3 vinyl?
It’s arguable that you don’t need any if you have the CD.
Unfortunately, I have far too many vinyls still sealed in shrink wrap.
For many, I think its about collecting as much as the music.

          3. @Tim J.
Truth. The most avid collectors, including record collectors, usually have OCD. However, as manifestations of mental illness go, the harm is comparatively manageable.

          4. Holy crap, please let me have one piece of my life that I enjoy and look forward to without feeling guilty about it!

And I should mention that I’ve listened to all of the music on my ~8000 CDs and ~500 records in the last three years.

          5. Totally get what you are saying…the fear of missing out & not finishing what you started…me, now, I’m over that fear, I got rid of the buying randomly part of music buying…I only buy artists I know I want to collect whole catalogues…if I only like some songs, I buy a hits collection or anthology…and I only buy 1 variant unless each variant has something exclusive, like the new TFF, I bought the SDE CD with the 3 bonus tracks, the BluRay Audio & only 1 colour of the vinyl…the Target exclusive sky blue with the bonus 7″ (which is black btw)…no I will not buy diff colours, only stick with 1…debating whether I should get the Target Prince “Sign O The Times” which is clear/white swirl when I have the RSD pic disc, or the Target Olivia Rodrigo “SOUR” with the exclusive cover & vinyl colour of translucent dark blue when I have the exclusive CD or the Target Ariana Grande “Positions” with the 3 posters & glow in the dark green vinyl when I have the Target CD with only 1 of the covers…oh the predicament!!! Haha…

        2. For me picture discs are merchandising that you can play on a turntable, if you don´t mind the loss of quality you can enjoy the music the same. For many many years Ozzy´s Mr. Crowley Live 12″ was only available on picture disc, I enjoyed it a lot even if the surface noise was very loud, still do because I’m used to it.

    2. If I buy a picture disc I’d expect to play it. The Pin Ups RSD picture disc plays well and has good reviews on Discogs – it’s just that sometimes the quality control on vinyl (not just picture discs) is just naff.
