Happy Christmas to SDE readers
As we approach Christmas Day I’d like to say thank you for your company in 2023. It has been a very interesting year, even if it was perhaps not a classic in terms of album reissues and box sets.
To be honest, there have been some trends that I have not particularly enjoyed, namely the concept of producing multiple coloured vinyl editions of new albums in order to increase sales figures. Labels know that some fans will have deep enough pockets and not be able to resist collecting them and it has started happening with CDs as well, with artists like Taylor Swift offering different artwork editions of one album.
The other trend I have not enjoyed, which really does ride roughshod over loyal fans, is the special ‘digital deluxe edition‘ which normally gets offered on the Monday after release date. Physical editions get shipped the week before and suddenly a digital deluxe appears with exclusive bonus tracks that could have been included on the vinyl or CD versions (that fans have pre-ordered months before) but have been ‘saved’ for digital marketing purposes. These digital deluxe editions are priced competitively, the idea being that fans who’ve ordered the physical sets will also order the digital deluxe to get the otherwise unavailable bonus audio. The album therefore enjoys one more sale and this helps the release achieve a higher ‘week one’ chart position, in the UK.
On a more positive note I have enjoyed bringing you more SDE exclusives this year than on any other previous 12 month period. We announced 11 titles in the SDE Surround Series of blu-ray audios in 2023 compared to seven last year and I hope to at least match that number in 2024. Thanks for embracing the concept and allowing this to continue. Don’t forget to get your order in for Paul Young!
To everyone who has read a post on SDE, left a comment, ordered something from the SDE shop, engaged with SDE on social media or watched a video or subscribed to our YouTube channel – thank you! SDE has always been about a community of likeminded people coming together and sharing and exchanging views in a friendly and respectful way. This site has grown in terms of readership and influence over time, but it hasn’t fundamentally changed that much, which I’m quite pleased about. It’s not perfect, but it is still totally independent, not ruined by a proliferation of advertising and has retained its focus. Best of all, it’s still here after all this time! Long may it continue…
One last thing…For the first time since I started this site in 2011, I’m going to take a proper break during the festive period and have the next week off. That means, barring any dramatic news (let’s hope not), there will be no new posts and no comments published between Christmas Day and New Years Eve. After recharging my batteries I will be back soon and you will be able to enjoy the traditional SDE Preview for the coming year early in January!

Thanks Paul for a superb site, formed part of my daily routine for years now. As already mentioned a disappointing year for reissues but still excited for 2023 review. My two personal favourite SDE’s from the last 12 months being Teardrop Explodes – Culture Bunker & Kirsty MacColl – See That Girl sets both beautiful examples of keeping the physical format alive. Hope everyone had a great Christmas & may 2024 bring you all the SDE’s you’ve been hoping for.
Me too regarding Kirsty & will now def buy that Teardrop Explodes set…question to you regarding the Kirsty set, if you had any trouble with it?? Read some did, and so did I…in mine, discs 3 & 6 kept getting stuck with no scratches or cracks on either disc, so it had to be manufacturing errors…I did an exchange with Amazon, with the replacement arriving tomorrow…regardless, despite some omissions & odd choice to have the unreleased 2nd Stiff single “You Caught Me Out”/”Boys” NOT included on the CDs but a companion 7″ vinyl, it’s an amazing set & really dig the “Real” album, yet also omitting the full-length “Berlin” & B-side “Rhythm of the Real Thing” but included on the digital “Real” was also strange & all…I had to reorder “From Croydon To Cuba”!!
No trouble for me Re: Kirsty discs & agree the “Real” tracks are a revelation. Hope you enjoy Teardrop box.

Merry Xmas Paul & everyone at SDE, enjoy your deserved break…yes 2023 was an interesting year, the SDE BluRay series was a highlight…and I have to admit, 2023 was possibly the first year I lost touch with a lot of new music, don’t know if I should be upset about it or not, but maybe I should instead focus on a select number of artists in music, as we only have limited time in life to devote to music at all, so I figure, focus on a certain number of artists & things and it will be better… here’s to an interesting 2024…

Paul, to be honest, you and Anne have totally outdone yourselves in 2023! We got more and more exclusives which became better and better, point in case the ABC, Soft Cell and Paul Young exclusives. Especially the Paul Young Blu-ray is stuffed with extras. Anne’s customer service blows everyone else’s out of the water. Also, for being informative, fair and critical. I agree with your concerns regarding recent trends. They are not good for the industry and have have a detrimental effect on collectors. I have stopped playing the multi-issue game unless it has a genuine purpose. Expanded box sets, yes. Ridiculous standard editions with alternatively coloured vinyl and/or covers, no! Get it right time and stop taking your audience for a ride. It is also better for the environment not to have multiple slabs of the same vinyl cluttering up the planet.

Thanks for keeping vinyl releases interesting. I did fall into the colour vinyl trap with Paul Wellers Fat pop. But sold them and learned a lesson. One copy will do regardless of the colour. Let’s see if I can resist when his next album comes out.

Seconded! (or more likely 175th-ed by now). The SDE Blu-Ray audio series has been the single best thing about 2023. The physical reissue and deluxe market (and the trends now favoured by record labels and even acts themselves) has been quite depressing this year, but the SDE series consistently gives fantastic sound at realistic (and sometimes ridiculously generous) prices.

I’m not a collector. So I am not about to buy 4 different vinyl covers for whomever. Not that I buy much vinyl.
I refuse to buy another copy of the Rolling Bones’ latest album, this after releasing the “Live Edition” something like 6 weeks after the original release. I don’t think live tracks would push me to buy another release. Adding Living In A Ghost Town wouldn’t of tempted me either since I have the CD “Single” already.

FYI ‘Living in a Ghost Town’ was added as a bonus track to the Japan cd of ‘Hackney Diamonds’. That’s the only reason I bought the Japan version. It’s the only version of the album I bought. And the best.

I’ve no problema whatsoever with multiple colours editions. You just pick the colour you like, and if you can afford more than one, good for you. Not being able to buy my preferred colour isn’t nice though.
I do have a problem with exclusives I don’t have access to.

Since your influence in the music industry is growing, maybe you could really make a difference in the ways of the music industry by pointing out what you don’t like as you did in your statement. My suggestion would be that you write a pamflet with all your observations and suggestions and actually send it to all the big music companies. Maybe, just maybe they will listen! They should.

Sounds like the Jerry Maguire approach to me. Not to be cynical on Christmas Day, but unfortunately power and influence within the industry is focused on a small group of executives and artists whose primary goal is shareholder returns and profits (no question for the former and increasingly for the latter).
