SDE Reissue & Release Preview 2023
SDE looks ahead to the coming year

Welcome to the traditional SDE reissue preview for the year ahead! As usual we will start with the first three months of this year where we have confirmed releases and then move on to what we know/think/presume/hope will be reissued later in the year. Of course they’ll be plenty of things not covered, so please as well as offering your thoughts on reissues mentioned below, do chip in with forthcoming products you know about that SDE hasn’t mentioned! You can do this via the comments section.

January 2023
Perhaps due to manufacturing capacity issues last year, January 2023 has some fairly big reissues/releases that were likely originally planned for 2022 but just got bumped. These include Volume 17 of Bob Dylan’s Bootleg Series called Fragments: Time Out of Mind Sessions 1996-1997, the coloured vinyl box set reissue of The Rolling Stones in Mono and Elvis On Tour.
The Now That’s What I Call Music Yearbook activity continues with the ‘Extra’ 3CD version of 1985 and it is very likely that we will continue to get regular releases as the NOW team move into the later part of the 1980s and continue to issue ad hoc specials on vinyl and CD.
Reissues, box sets and albums of interest in January include:
- Tori Amos / Little Earthquakes (2LP vinyl)
- The Rolling Stones in Mono (coloured vinyl box)
- Now Yearbook ’85 – Extra
- Thin Lizzy / Live and Dangerous (box set)
- Elvis On Tour (6CD+blu-ray box)
- Tangerine Dream / Three O’Clock High (vinyl reissue)
- New Order / Low Life (box set)
- Bob Dylan / Fragments: Time Out of Mind Sessions 1996-1997
- Marvin Gaye / Greatest Hits Live in ’76 (vinyl and CD reissues)
- Blow Monkeys / Animal Magic (box set)
- Falco / Einzelhaft (deluxe reissue)

February 2023
February already looks very strong, with reissues from a diverse list of artists including The Auteurs, Robert Palmer, A Flock of Seagulls, Haircut 100, a-ha and Ocean Colour Scene. The two latest releases in the SDE Surround Series – Orbital’s new album, Optical Delusion, and the George Harrison tribute Concert For George – will also ship in February (more on the SDE Surround Series later).
There’s also some interesting compilations which are big multi-disc sets. These include Young Limbs Rise Again, a Goth-themed set which tells the story of the Bat Cave club nights in London in the early 1980s and one curated by Steven Wilson called Intrigue: Steven Wilson Presents: Progressive Sounds In UK Alternative Music 1979-89. There’s going to be a lot of Wilson-related activity in 2023, so more on that later!
Reissues, box sets and albums of interest in February include:
- Black Adder’s Historical Record (vinyl box)
- Steven Wilson presents… Intrigue (compilation)
- The Rolling Stones / GRRR Live!
- The Auteurs / People ‘Round Here Don’t Like To Talk About It (CD box)
- Orbital / Optical Delusion (new album + SDE Surround Series blu-ray)
- British Mod Sounds of the Sixties Volume 2 (compilation)
- Robert Palmer / The Island Records Years (9CD box)
- A Flock of Seagulls (deluxe reissue)
- David Bowie / Divine Symmetry (vinyl LP)
- Concert for George (SDE Surround Series Blu-ray Audio)
- Young Limbs Rise Again: The Story of the Bat Cave Night Club (compilation)
- Haircut 100 / Pelican West 40 (reissue)
- Ocean Colour Scene / Yesterday Today 1992 – 2018
- a-ha / Hunting High and Low (6LP vinyl box)
- The Alan Parsons Project / The Turn of a Friendly Card (box set)
- The Strokes / Singles Vol. 1 (7″ box set) – US pre-order link • UK pre-order link
March 2023 and Beyond
Looking deeper into the year there’s always certain artists where you just know you are going to get something, not matter what. Top of that list is The Fab Four from whom we’ve had a major box set every year since 2017 (except 2020, due to COVID).

The Beatles
The logical reissue to expect in 2023 is a super deluxe of 1965’s Rubber Soul, since that’s the one before Revolver and there is an expectation that Apple and UMC will start working ‘backwards’ with their box sets, moving from the mid-60s to the start of the Fab Four’s studio career. However, an alternative approach would be to start at the beginning, especially since 2023 marks the 60th anniversaries of both The Beatles’ debut Please Please Me and their second album With The Beatles. There’s also the unfinished business of the lack of Revolver blu-ray with the Atmos Mix in the box set. Will the label address this and put that out as a standalone product or have they already moved on from Revolver? We are still waiting for The Beatles Anthology on blu-ray and will Disney / Apple agree to Peter Jackson’s reasonably vocal requests to create an extended ‘Director’s Cut’ of The Beatles Get Back documentary? We’ll have to wait and see!

Paul McCartney
We’ve now had two years without any Paul McCartney’s Archive Collection reissues – a first – so I’m fairly confident that he will finally get his 12 year old reissue programme back on track in 2023. Clever money is on London Town and Back to the Egg, the two studio albums from the late 1970s and the only ones from that decade not reissued. If it happens, these will likely be re-released simultaneously, as a pair, (like Tug of War and Pipes of Peace were in 2015) and perhaps we’ll see the first Archive Collection since 2017’s Flowers in the Dirt to be reissued in the first half of the year. The advantage of that would be that it keeps the schedules clear for the second half of the 2023 for a possible Band on the Run box. Yes, the world’s favourite Paul McCartney/Wings album is 50 in December, so might we even see THREE reissues this year? Not impossible, although probably unlikely (it hasn’t happened before). Given that Band on the Run came out very late in 1973 and virtually all of its sales came during 1974, MPL might opt to schedule a possible 50th anniversary edition in the first half of 2024, or they may not bother with BOTR at all, of course, especially if there is genuinely nothing much to offer after the 2010 set. I predict we’ll get some more Dolby Atmos Mixes of previously reissued albums, although streaming-only. Paul is not interested in releasing these as standalone products but now that he has finally engaged with spatial audio, might we see surround sound included within an Archive Collection? Not likely, in SDE’s opinion. Finally, Paul is continuing to record new material and told readers of his website that he has been working with American producer Andrew Watt. Despite that, I doubt we’ll get a new album in 2023.

50th anniversaries
One way to predict reissue activity is to consult the ‘crystal ball’ of anniversaries. Band on the Run is of course not the only album celebrating 50 this year although that significant birthday doesn’t always guarantee a reissue. Pink Floyd’s classic The Dark Side of the Moon reaches its half-century although there will definitely be a physical box set, with a new Atmos Mix, for that particular title.
In the five years since Roxy Music’s 1972 debut was reissued we’ve had no further activity in terms of expanded studio albums. This year actually marks the 50th anniversaries of both For Your Pleasure and Stranded but as far as SDE can tell there’s been little progress and it’s neither is looking likely.
Elton John is another prolific artist who released two albums in 1973: Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player and Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. The later was reissued back in 2014, although the label didn’t exactly push the boat out and the 4CD+DVD package, with its disc of contemporary artists tackling songs from the album, wasn’t particularly well received. With Elton’s profile as high as ever, and with UMC now really committed to putting out high quality reissues for him these days, I could see them ‘having another go’ at this album, perhaps in the style of last year’s Madman Across The Water. If not, then Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player will be the likely candidate.
David Bowie also released a pair of albums in 1973 with Aladdin Sane and Pinups, however we are unlikely to see an expanded reissue of either since Warners have fallen slightly out of sync by delaying the Hunky Dory reissue (Divine Symmetry) until November last year. This means a reissue of The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars is now overdue (the album was actually 50 in June last year). This is obviously a big record for many people and having missed the anniversary anyway, the label will take their time and we may have to wait until the end of the year again. Let’s hope packaging and presentation keeps consistent with both Divine Symmetry and Conversation Piece. Those sets have the advantage of not requiring vinyl to be pressed and so lead times will be shorter.

The Who’s Quadrophenia is 50 in 2023 but it’s 1971’s Who’s Next that will be reissued this year (there was a super deluxe of Quadrophenia in 2011, of course). We know about the Who’s Next box because Pete Townshend told us even if the original plan was for a release last year. It It’s going to be a very big box and a very big deal; Steven Wilson has created a Dolby Atmos Mix which will be something to look forward to.
John Lennon’s Mind Games is also 50 this year and we should indeed get a significant deluxe edition of that album with the usual array of ‘Ultimate Mixes’. Some Time In New York City is basically done, but after initially being touted for 2022, it has been shelved for the time being.
In terms of George Harrison, as well as the SDE-exclusive blu-ray of Concert For George (which is shipping in late Feb) we may well get a reissue of Living in the Material World, Harrison’s 1973 follow-up to All Things Must Pass which features the hit single ‘Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)’.
Other notable albums that turn 50 this year include Stevie Wonder’s Innervisions, Lou Reed’s Berlin, Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells, Genesis’ Selling England By The Pound and ABBA’s Ring Ring.

Madonna
Madonna’s career-spanning partnership with Warner Music Group that promised a “multi-year catalog series”, was announced in August 2021 and last year the label delivered the first proper release with the Finally Enough Love compilation, which was a bit of a mixed bag. SDE is expecting the first album reissue in 2023 which will be Madonna’s self-titled debut album. This makes perfect sense, since it’s 40 years old in July. It will be very interesting indeed to see how comprehensive the package is and how Warners will choose to present it, because it will set the tone for the campaign for years to come. Madonna has a reputation for doing what she wants – not necessarily want fans want – and we were told that she is “personally” curating these sets, which does set a few alarm bells ringing, even if those kinds of statements can be taken with a pinch of salt (is Madge really sitting at her laptop checking Discogs listings in case she’s forgotten about the Peruvian radio edit of a certain single?).
Following on from the Antidepressant re-release in 2021, Lloyd Cole’s 2003 album Music in a Foreign Language will be reissued in 2023. It has been remastered and will include a 10-track bonus album of Lloyd’s rough mixes before other musicians were brought in. According to LC it’s “quite different” to the final version.
Duran Duran’s Medazzaland has only just been re/issued on CD and vinyl but an expanded deluxe edition will follow, possibly in the first half of 2023, which will come with bonus material and demos. We know that Depeche Mode will start their Memento Mori world tour in March and they will deliver a new album of the same name, presumably around the same time. Peter Gabriel is another artist who has announced a tour without offering details of the album, but, like Depeche Mode, if he wants to sell records off the back of the tour, his new album I/O will need to be available by May, when the gigs start in Poland.
The Lilac Time will deliver a new album which will be available “at the earliest” (according to Stephen Duffy) in August 2023. A triple-disc edition of the band’s 1991 album Astronauts will emerge around October time. Everything But The Girl are issuing their first new studio album in over 20 years this year and it’s almost exactly three years since the Pet Shop Boys last album Hotspot was released, so there’s a reasonable chance they’ll deliver some new material in the next 12 months. There is actually confirmation of some PSB archival activity already, since their 2023 edition of the book Annually will come with an exclusive four-track CD called ‘Lost’ which features 2015 demos of previously unreleased songs. Sadly, this seems to be available in the UK-only (link here).

40th anniversaries
Where there is a 50th anniversary, there will naturally be a 40th anniversary and 1983 was clearly a significant year with plenty of great albums released. Tears For Fears’ The Hurting comes to mind and while the box set from a decade ago (co-curated by yours truly) delivered virtually everything you could want, it didn’t include any spatial audio. We know that ABC’s Lexicon Of Love has had the Dolby Atmos treatment, because Martin Fry keeps going on about it but the box set (“a fully expanded release of The Lexicon of Love“) is not likely to appear until the summer, roughly a year late.
Eurythmics’ Sweet Dreams album was actually released 40 years ago tomorrow, but the lack of Eurythmics reissue activity has been one of the major disappointments in SDE’s lifetime. It has been almost 18 years since any Eurythmics album has been expanded which is simply not good enough. Even the admittedly decent vinyl reissues were nearly FIVE years ago. What’s going on? Dave Stewart has often complained that the Sony is simply not interested and the fact that there was zero release activity in the year they were finally inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame speaks volumes. When the band chatted to SDE back in 2018 Dave told us “I was just amazed that they [Sony] had woken up and realised that Eurythmics existed on their label!”. It seems they woke up but then fell asleep again.
The Thompson Twins rather brilliant Quick Step and Side Kicks album is 40 this year and, rather like the Eurythmics, the band have been neglected over the years. We’ve had the odd coloured vinyl reissue (from boutique label Vinyl 180), but it has been almost a decade since the SDE-curated ‘Remixes and Rarities’ 2CD set. I am hearing ‘noises’ about possible activity although whether anything will emerge in 2023 remains to be seen.
Heaven 17’s classic The Luxury Gap is 40 but any kind of reissue seems unlikely since Demon rather exhausted the archive with their 2019 Play to Win sets. Malcolm McLaren’s influential Duck Rock album is another album from 1983 that fans would love to see reissued and expanded, but despite being produced by Trevor Horn, this album was never a ZTT release and it seems as if there are rights issues.
1983 is the year of Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s Relax and we know that Universal Music bought ZTT a few years ago and have so far only dipped their toe into the commercially rich waters of Frankie, with a RSD release, the cheapo 3CD Essentials collection and a few ‘vanilla’ CD and vinyl album releases. Expect a deeper dive into said waters later this year and talking of Trevor Horn, the producer will be Reimagining the Eighties once again for another volume of of re-recordings with guest vocalists (including Toyah doing Relax, apparently!).
The Police’s Synchronicity reaches the 40 milestone, but sod that, where’s Regatta De Blanc? Nearly 18 months ago Andy Summers told SDE “a four-disc version of Regatta De Blanc is coming”. From what SDE can gather there’s a Sting-shaped blockage in the pipeline and until that can be addressed The Police reissue activity will focus on entrées and desserts (like documentaries and vinyl picture discs) and will skip the main course.
Paul Young’s No Parlez has earned a reputation as a charity shop staple, but when you sell a million copies of your debut album in the UK, that’s a lot of product floating around. The 2008 double-CD 25th anniversary of No Parlez was both flawed and lacking in ambition and since then, even more archive material has emerged via SDE-related projects including the 2012 Remixes and Rarities set (Cherry Red), the 4CD Tomb of Memories deluxe package (from Sony) and the CD singles box courtesy of Edsel. That’s not to say a great No Parlez box set couldn’t be put together and with it’s layered eighties production, it’s an album that is crying out for a Dolby Atmos Mix. Whether anything is in the planning is not clear but I can tell you that Paul Young will release a new album in 2023 called Behind The Lens. I’ve heard it and it’s excellent.
2023 is going to be a big year for Steven Wilson and his fans. With the Porcupine Tree revival almost at an end (a few festival appearances this summer are likely to be the band’s “final” shows) focus will move on to Wilson’s first studio album since 2020’s The Future Bites. The Harmony Codex features 10 tracks (including a song with regular collaborator Ninet Tayeb) and clocks in at 65 minutes. It is a move back to more conceptual waters with a number of very long, complex numbers. Actually there is more news on Porcupine Tree. The band’s 2005 album Deadwing is getting the full 3CD+blu-ray deluxe reissue treatment in book style like the In Absentia reissue of a few years ago. This is slated for release in March and can actually be pre-ordered already via Amazon in the USA. Finally, Storm Corrosion was Steven Wilson’s 2012 musical collaboration between Mikael Åkerfeldt of Swedish progressive metal band Opeth. Wilson has created a Dolby Atmos Mix of the album of the same name and there will be a physical reissue at some point in 2023.

SDE hopes we finally get a Prince reissue in 2023 although nothing appears certain at this moment in time. We know that a deluxe of Debbie Harry’s debut solo album Koo Koo is coming in April and a 5LP vinyl super deluxe edition version of The Flaming Lips’ Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots will be released the same month (you can pre-order from Amazon in the USA and Amazon in the UK right now).
Sony are working on a Wham! singles box set and after the Dolby Atmos of Terence Trent D’Arby’s 1987 album Introducing The Hardline was made available on streaming last year we can surely expect an actual physical box set to finally emerge this year. Like the streaming version, this will be issued under the name Sanada Maitreya.
Kate Bush is an artist SDE and its readers are always interested in. If 2023 comes and goes without another studio album then it will be a new record gap between long-players beating the 12 years between 1993’s The Red Shoes and 2005’s Aerial. A new record seems more likely than any kind of reissue activity although “more likely” still means “not very likely” in the world of Kate Bush. Her refusal to restore her excellent promo videos and release them on blu-ray continues to frustrate and her one and only ‘best of’, the now incorrectly titled The Whole Story, will be 37 years old this year. The dream project would be some kind of retrospective that brought today visuals, such as videos, TV appearances with an updated retrospective with singles and rarities. Her end-of-year message to fans in 2022 was sweet and compassionate as ever, but typically told us nothing about what she was up to, professionally.
SDE Surround Series
I’ll finish on a word about the SDE Surround Series. One of my highlights last year was this new initiative that saw SDE partner with labels to bring you exclusive Blu-ray Audios featuring spatial audio (Dolby Atmos and 5.1 mixes) of new and classic albums. We managed to announce seven products, which I’m very proud of. This will continue into 2023 and the goal is to attempt to bring you at least 12 releases this year. There’s potentially some very exciting titles that I can’t talk about yet, but rest assured I know what you like and will do my very best to deliver a diverse and interesting selection. Number seven in the series, but actually the eighth release (remember Concert for George was #6.5) should be announced in the next few weeks. Thanks once more for your enthusiasm for the SDE Surround!

The 50th anniversary for Red Rose Speedway is this year. McCartney has been putting out 1/2 speed masters of his post Beatles work on their 50th. Hope it continues, McCartney, Ram and Wings Wildlife sound real good.
Go on then, I’m playing :)
-Reissues on CD (or first time issues in some cases) for the first eleven volumes in the Hits Album compilation series, with the tracks restored to full length and without the mistakes that dragged down the Now reissues. If tracks can’t be licensed I’d rather Sony waited until such time as they can be, than put the releases out with songs missing.
-ITV to start repeating the Chart Show on one of their minor channels. Loads of info on tour dates and no idiot former presenters who’ve got it into their heads that they were bigger than the show.
-Some more CD single box sets would be nice. Wham! are a great example of an artist whose hits were all on the same record label and don’t need a box the size of a bus shelter to reissue them.
–personally curated by Madonna: this does sound like a line to sell these rereleases to the fans, but I do wonder what, if anything, has happened to change her mind on this. The song Gambler was never on any of her albums, hasn’t been included on any of the hits compilations either and hasn’t been sung live in all the time since Madonna wrote it, suggesting that she either doesn’t think much of the song or has just completely forgotten it. That’s one example but I think True Blue might have gone the same way if it wasn’t the title track to an album, and while I’ll happily be proved wrong I wonder if this reissue project might yet be a case of, keep circulating the tapes.
Some more albums that will be 50 this year:
Queen – debut album
Led Zeppelin – Houses of the Holy
Rolling Stones – Goats Head Soup
Steely Dan – Countdown to Ecstasy
Emerson, Lake & Palmer – Brain Salad Surgery
Electric Light Orchestra – ELO 2, On the Third Day
Yes – Tales from Topographic Oceans
King Crimson – Larks Tongues in Aspic
Many of them already got multi-disc super deluxe editions in recent years but some of them have not (Queen, Steely Dan, ELO). Maybe they will get a chance this time?
Something that I’m not sure has been mentioned so far is that Roger Waters’ Amused to Death is about to be reissued as a 4LP box set.
I think Buckingham Nicks might be out of copyright this year if it’s not reissued in some form. Maybe they will actually do it??
Good news for fans of ZTT-related releases, the following limited-edition* box set will be released on January 27:
ANDREW POPPY – Ark Hive of a Live, a 4xCD + 128pp book set, packaged in a 280mm x 173mm x 23mm hard case.
*500 copies according to the False Walls label.
This box set compiles unreleased material from the past four decades (80s, 90s, 00s and 10s), and although “Live” in the title refers to recordings from public performances, it is interesting to know that they have been processed in post-production.
Each disc is organized to sound like a ‘suite’, even though the tracks were recorded at different periods of time. The book includes track-by-track commentary, archival photographs and an introduction by Paul Morley.
I pre-ordered last year, and I already received my copy at the end of December (!); I’ve been listening to it ever since, and I can safely say that if you liked tracks like “Cadenza” from his first album on ZTT Records, or “45 Is” from his second, you certainly won’t be disappointed with this new release. Highly recommended!
Any chance you could do a physical release of the Atmos mix of Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach’s “Painted from Memory” that was announced today? As far as I can tell, there’s no release planned, so it must be a streaming only deal. Unless SDE steps up…?
I had the same thoughts myself. Unfortunately no one thinks to ask BEFORE this is announced…
Good news if you are a Gary Numan fan. Pure is reissued on double clear vinyl at the end of January (it’s £30 on Amazon UK at the moment) and his debut album as Tubeway Army is reissued in February. This will be available in either black or blue marbled vinyl. Both come in the black on white “face” sleeve.
Only if you are a vinyl fan. Numan and Ade Fenton have been working rerecordings of Sacrifice, Exile, and Pure for a while now. I hope we see those released this year.
Did I miss the explanation of the 6.5 blu-ray release?
It doesn’t have a slipcase so it’s 6.5 so that there’s no numbers ‘missing’ in the sequence when we announce #7 (later this month).
Not making any wishes or predictions for this year, I will just see how the year pans out. I did get a couple of nice surprises in 22 so hope this year will be the same. By the way, I really like Panopticom by Peter Gabriel so we will see if the rest of the tracks are just as good. Alright, there are 2 things I am hoping for this year ( I couldn’t hold it back). First is an sde of Quartet by Ultravox and the second is/are SDE exclusive Blu Ray audio reissues of some classic 80’s albums. Have a great year everyone.
Lots to look forward to this year if you’re a fan of Vivian Stanshall and the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. Boxsets and previously unreleased material for both are promised to coincide with the late Ginger Geezer’s 80th birthday (a tribute gig at London’s Union Chapel now confirmed for March, too). We do know what we want, and we want it NOW…
I’ve downloaded a couple of Viv Stanshall documentaries last year. Mainly as I wanted to see if there was anything about his time at The Manor and the night that lead to the original drunken Sailor’s Hornpipe on Tubular Bells. It didn’t, but it didn’t matter by the end as his life is so interesting I was hooked properly by the end. What a life it was and if there is a decent SDEto be had I will be up for that. Terry Keeps his Clips On became a bit of an earworm tbh.
The Honeydrippers album will suposedly get an expanded release this year.
I wonder if we will ever get a new Sade or Siouxsie album?
A new Kate Bush album would be great, but only if it’s better than the god awful 50 Words For Snow.
Adele should drop an album this year with no fuss and little promotion. She needs to get away from the tried and tested formula of the whinge fest albums. That whole thing has become tiresome and predictable.
I’m always down for a Synchronicity box set with the 12in singles reproduced. That release was groundbreaking with all of the different versions of the cover art. And the album was everything at that time.
One thing we’re still missing is the 40th anniversary releases for ABBA’s The Visitors, on half-speed double vinyl, picture disc singles, and coloured vinyl singles box set, as was done for Arrival, ABBA – The Album, Voulez-Vous, and Super Trouper. It would have been due in November 2021 but was pre-empted by the release of Voyage.
Kate Bush…as much as I would love a new album with new material, I would like to see the release of the Before the Dawn bluray. I was lucky to witness one of the shows in September 2014 but I still want the bluray. Thousands of Kate Bush fans who couldn’t get a ticket and all who could would be really grateful.
I’m reasonably sure that this is never going to happen, at least in Kate’s lifetime.
These 40 anniversary albums really make me feel old as I bought all these at the time and many of the related 12 inches.
Duck Rock is the only one I did not buy, although I do have 2 versions of Double Dutch on 12 Inch. Trevor Horn is mentioning Duck Rock at length in his Biography and I am now very interested in a re-release.
For what Prince is concerned, I am really hoping for SDE for Parade and Around the World in a Day as that period is neglected and has some of my favourite songs on them.
The status of McLaren’s catalog is the one that pains me the most.
My last contribution to this thread was forgotten, so I’ll try again:
My wishlist for 2023 is:
Madonna. Her first album turns 40 this summer, so a deluxe edition of that one would be nice. Demos, outtakes and period remixes. NOT new remixes! They age quicker and worse than milk.
(Remember when Cyndi Lauper did that on her She’s So Unusual 30th-anniversary? NOT popular. People here ripped her to shreds!)
Anyway. I also hope that the rumored surround mix will be included on a DVD.
Twisted Sister. They asked fans on social media if we were interested in a 40th-anniversary edition of their first album, Under The Blade. We all said “yes”.
Nothing happened then, so hopefully something nice will be released this year.
Prince. We have waited for Diamonds And Pearls to get the SDE treatment. Could this be the year it finally happens? The SDE:s for 1999 and Sign “O” The Times were wonderful, so we’re hoping…
Dolly Parton and Porter Wagoner‘s collected recordings were released in a lovely box set back in 2014. Wouldn’t it be lovely if they released a similar box with Dolly’s solo material from her RCA tears? Oh well, a guy can dream…
Lots of people here want a 50th-anniversary release of The Dark Side Of The Moon with Pink Floyd, but I’d be happy if they just re-released the picture disc for RSD or something. The Immersion box was quite big. How much more material is there in the vault?
I have that DSOTM pic disc. I think I bought it in the mid 80s. I wonder what it’s worth…
My TDSotM bluray from the Immersion box doesn’t work. Anybody can help with that, please? Thank you.
Hi Mon027,
there was an issue with virtually all of the blu-ray pressed by ‘optimal media’ in Germany to include in the European edition (also used for the Japanese edition) of the Immersion box release of DSOTM.
As the discs originally played fine and only went unplayable several years after the release i guess that many purchasers of that box aren’t aware of this problem.
The latest comments beneath Paul’s original post for the release of the box
https://superdeluxeedition.com/reviews/pink-floyd-the-dark-side-of-the-moon-immersion-box-set-review/#comments-2949
suggest that there has been a replacement program for this issue some years ago but i can’t say if this is still active.
You might try out the suggested mail adress given there though.
If this won’t work anymore i guess the best possible outcome would be that the same mixes (5.1 and Quadrophonic) will be included on a blu-ray in the soon to be announced 50th anniversary box, preferrably made available (as recently for ‘Animals’) as a stand alone br-release.
Other than that you could watch out for either a copy of the replacement disc or the US-release of the box where the discs are not affected via Discogs, eBay or the likes.
I used the replacement program ‘only’ a couple of years ago and got send a new working disc, so worth a shot.
This issue affects only European-pressed copies of the set. The U.S.A. edition was presseed in Mexico and isn’t affected.
I’m really hoping they finally get the Ramones End of The Century deluxe version out.
There’s a four disc Costello/Bacharach set coming according to one of the monthly magazines.
And in this second post, my dreams for 2023, with various levels of likelihood (written as if it will all happen!):
ART OF NOISE – Kiss in whatever form. Hinted at in the In Visible Silence 2017 reissue liner notes, where it is catalogued #3 in the Adventure Series, this compilation (?) will be released conjointly to the Below The Waste reissue.
BLANK & JONES – Beatless Edition 1. B&J launch a new series of albums, in the same style as the aforementioned Beatless EP.
BLANK & JONES / Various Artists – So80s Volumes 14 and 15 as 2xCD sets. Yes, licensing music is getting harder and harder. Still, B&J have managed in the last three years to hunt for goodies and get clearance for another two volumes.
BJORK – Debut Multiple CD + Blu-ray SDE. It includes all period mixes including the previously vinyl-only versions, as well as a previously unreleased concert, and a new Dolby Atmos mix next to the previously released 5.1 mix.
BOB MARLEY AND THE WAILERS – In Dub, Vol 2. Eleven years have passed since the release of the first volume. Volume 2 comes out this year!
BRONSKI BEAT – Hundred & Thousands: 2xCD and 2xLP Deluxe Edition reissues. Next to the Age Of Consent and both Communards recent reissues, this new 100s & 1000s reissue features as extras all 1984/5 B-sides (absent from the TAOC reissue) and a few additional era mixes.
BRONSKI BEAT – Truthdare Doubledare: 2xCD and 2xLP deluxe edition reissues. Steve Bronski passed away end 2021, and it is time to re-evaluate Bronski Beat’s output post Jimmy.
CABARET VOLTAIRE – #8792 Collected Works (1987-1992) multi CD/LP box set(s). The follow up to 2013’s #8385 Collected Works (1983-1985) will be at last released exactly ten years later. It includes the remainder of the original Virgin/EMI catalogue: the Code, Groovy Laidback & Nasty, and Technology albums all remastered; all mixes from associated singles; the GL&N Western Mixes EP expanded with more tracks; a disc of previously unreleased material; and clips and concerts on DVD/Blu-ray.
DAFT PUNK – Random Access Memories – Revisited for its 10th Anniversary: the classic album gets remixed by a selection of great artists from various genres, resulting in a release as varied as Daft Club.
DAVID BOWIE – The complete 80’s 12inches: After so many reissues from his 70s output, it is time to satisfy fans from his 80’s output. A comprehensive compilation gathers on 3xCD all 80s 12inch mixes, including instrumental and dub versions. Blank & Jones are put to the task by the Bowie estate.
ELECTRONIC – Expanded Album Reissue campaign. The band three albums get proper multi-CD reissue sets, and LP reissues with bonus tracks.
GRACE JONES – Living My Life 2xCD, 2xLP, and Blu-ray Audio Deluxe Editions. Finally released in 2023!
GRACE JONES – Slave To The Rhythm SDE. We all kept on asking year after year, relentlessly… In 2023, the wait will be over!
JEAN-MICHEL JARRE – Surround reissue campaign: the French man comes to reason, and starts remixing his entire back catalogue in Dolby Atmos. The SDE community are pleased that JMJ surround albums will be issued on Blu-ray audio discs.
MARSHEAUX – New Album. After having parted ways for too many years , Sophia and Marianthi finally realise that it is time to come back together and deliver us another synthpop masterpiece!
NENEH CHERRY – Homebrew 2xCD and 2xLP Deluxe Editions. Her 1992 trip-hop masterpiece missed its 30th anniversary last year. This will be corrected this year…
PAUL HARDCASTLE – Jazzmasters 8: While PH has continued to release albums in the “Hardcastle” series, he somehow paused the “Jazzmasters” series for 7 years. The long awaited new volume in the series will be released in 2023!
PET SHOP BOYS – Parlophone Years: The Remixes. The remix archive campaign PSB’s fans have long been dreaming of is at last starting in 2023.
PHIL COLLINS – Other Sides & Remixed Sides: at last released as a 4xCD box set. Packaged the same way than Plays Well With Others, so that it can nicely sit next to it. Ooh, and with an updated track listing now including the few missing tracks spotted by hardcore fans…
SIMPLE MINDS – Real Life 5xCD + Blu-ray SDE. Extras include all period mixes, a disc full or previously unreleased demos and alternate versions, the 13th August 1991 Glasgow Barrowland concert in its entirety, and an Atmos mix.
TEARS FOR FEARS – The Hurting 2xCD corrected and completed reissue. As second disc, I want the “B-Sides And Remixes” disc from the 2013 box set to add the missing B-side Saxophone As Opiates, and to replace the wrongly featured Broken Revisited track by the correct period B-side We Are Broken.
U2 – Rattle & Hum 2/3xCD + DVD/Blu-ray Deluxe Edition: Much wanted, and much overdue.
VANGELIS – Surround reissue campaign: if there is an artist whose music is begging for surround sound… Vangelis’ back catalogue gets the Atmos treatment, starting with the RCA years (Heaven & Hell, Albedo 0.39, Spiral, and Beaubourg).
I just got to repeat myself again:
Great vision of the future! Any chances? A good idea is always 50% in the way of existance…
In this first of two posts, my somehow realistic expectations:
AIR – Talkie Walkie 2xCD+Blu-ray Deluxe Edition. The 2003’s album should get the same treatment for its 20th anniversary than the band’s previous album. CD1: album remastered. CD2: alternative versions and demos. Blu-ray: Dolby Atmos version plus video clips.
ART OF NOISE – Below The Waste 2xCD and 2xLP Deluxe Editions (to be catalogued #4 in the “Adventure Series”, according to the Visible Silence 2017 reissue liner notes). Let’s cross fingers this anticipated follow-up to In No Sense Nonsense comes out in this year…
ART OF SILENCE – Best Of on LP or 2xLP. After many digital releases in 2022 of both previously released and previously unreleased material circa 1996-98 from J.J. Jeczalik under the alias Art Of Silence, I expect some kind of best of on vinyl. It was hinted at in the first half of 2022 on the artist’s FB page…
BEN LIEBRAND / Various Artists – Grand 12-Inches 20 4xCD compilation. The best 12” compilation series out there will certainly get another volume this year. DJ, producer and mastermixer Ben Liebrand is unstoppable!
BLANK & JONES – Beatless EP on colour 12”. Released end December 2022 only digitally, I suspect this will become available as colour or white vinyl sometime in the course of the year.
BLANCMANGE – Nil By Mouth VI on CD. I expect a 6th volume to Blancmange’s excellent series of instrumental albums.
ERASURE – Cowboy 2xCD Deluxe Edition. Next in line for a remastered reissue with B-sides, a selection of period mixes, new mixes and alternative takes.
FALCO – Junge Roemer: 2xCD and 2xLP Deluxe Editions.
FALCO – Falco 3: 3xCD+DVD and 4xLP Deluxe Editions. I expect the vinyl version to includes one LP per single: Rock Me Amadeus, Jeanny, Vienna Calling.
JIMMY SOMERVILLE – Read My Lips 2xCD and 2xLP Deluxe Editions. After the last Bronski Beat and Communards reissues on London Records, this would be a logical next set of releases (with a bonus CD single, of course!).
MASSIVE ATTACK – 100th Window 3xLP colour vinyl reissue. For its 20th anniversary, the long out of print triple LP gets repressed this year.
MIKE OLDFIELD – Islands 2xCD+Blu-ray Deluxe Edition plus LP reissue. Mike Oldfield finally decides to continue where he left off in 2017 with Deluxe Editions of Discovery and The Killing Fields. The Islands Deluxe Edition includes 7” and 12” versions of period album and non-album singles and their B-sides. The third disc is this time a Blu-ray disc rather than a DVD, and it contains a Dolby Atmos version of the album, as well as some of the extra tracks.
MOBY – New album, as hinted at in its latest Newsletter.
ORBITAL – Green Album SDE: After the semi-interesting Orbital 30, it is time for proper reissues with period extra tracks. As an Orbital vinyl collector, what I am expecting is everything to be released… on CD! I think/hope the first release will be the first/green album, in a multiple CD SDE format, including the original UK album including cassette and vinyl only tracks, all period 12inch mixes from both album and non-album singles, and of course all eight tracks from both Mutations 12”s.
PET SHOP BOYS / NEW ORDER – Unity Tour: in whatever form(s), I expect recordings from the collaboration tour to be released sometime in the year.
ROGER WATERS – The Lockdown Sessions LP and/or CD. Most likely, the digitally released mini-album from December 2022 should get a physical release this year.
UNDERWORLD – A Hundred Days Off Super Deluxe Edition. Much talked about, the follow up to 2018’s Beaucoup Fish SDE should hopefully be released in the course of 2023. Most likely a 4xCD affair, with an entire disc of previously unreleased material, and disc 3 and 4 including period remixes of the album singles – as well as the 2000 mixes from Cow Girl and the 2003 mixes from Born Slippy (Nuxx).
UNDERWORLD – Drift Series Part 2: The original Drift project got renamed Drift Series 1 at some point in time. So, it is obvious to expect a follow up; the Series 2 will start in the second half of 2023, one track per week. The archiving box set will be released the year after.
UNDERWORLD – Eight Ball: band web site exclusive 12inch. Since a new live version was recently sent as gift to Newsletter subscribers, I suspect it will be released next in the series of quality 12inches Underworld have been putting on the market in the last two years.
XPROPAGANDA – Live Album: CD+DVD/Blu-ray and 2xLP. I expect the band to release a live recording of their Heart Is Strange tour.
ZTT Records – Definition Series: after the well curated lossless digital reissues of all 808 State, Propaganda, Art Of Noise and Mc Tunes material in 2021 and 2022, we can certainly expect more to come this year. Act? FGTH? Anne Pigalle? The more obscure ZTT artists? Place your bets!
Apart from those reissues mentioned, there was talk about a deluxe edition of the superb Coverdale/Page album. I hope that this will show up for it’s 30th anniversary. The same goes for the debut album of Candlebox. The band has „announced an announcement“ about possible celebrations. 1983 also is the 40th birthday of U2’s War and the Bunnymen’s Porcupine. Another album to be celebrated could be The Jam’s Dig The New Breed but since Fire and Skill ist seems that it might not be. State Of Confusion by The Kinks also dates from 1983. So There’s some albums to re-release in 2023….. not to forget aboutt Van Halen!
Given that (other than with the exception of Paul’s excellent SDE series) the door appears largely to be closing on physical spatial audio releases, while it remains ajar I’d welcome surround discs from any of the following:-
Abba
ABC**
Big Country
ELO
Eurythmics
Genesis et al. (Collins, Gabriel, Hackett etc)
Go West
Heaven 17
Janis Ian
JELLYFISH
Jethro Tull**
Billy Joel
Elton John
Nik Kershaw
Paul Simon
Terence Trent Darby
XTC
Yes
Join me at the end of 2023 to see if ANY of these releases (other than those already announced**) actually come to fruition…. :)
We’re currently at the start of the 50th anniversary of Status Quo’s heyday period. So I expect precisely zero in terms of getting them back onto the vinyl racks to mark the string of upcoming occasions and introduce a whole new generation to the Frantic Four’s classics.
Last month saw the half-century of “Piledriver”. HMV had a blue vinyl pressing for their 2017 “Vinyl Week”, but it’s been unavailable since.
September will be the 50th anniversary of their first UK #1 album, “Hello!”. Music On Vinyl pressed a one-off reissue in 2012 but it’s been unavailable since.
Never mind marking their half-centuries – these should all be in the racks, all the time, as standard back catalogue. A hugely-expensive limited edition 11-LP box set from 2015 doesn’t count, where’s the affordable accessibility?
When all’s said and done, Quo’s management will become a case study in how not to do things.
Don’t be too harsh with their management.
I for one am quite satisfied with their 2cd and 3cd deluxe releases of all their albums from the 70s, 80s and 90s…
My dream list, both on vinyl:
Tom Waits – Rain Dogs
Pink Floyd – Is there anybody out there…
The Island Records catalog for Tom Waits is definitely due for reissues. Nothing since the original CDs, IIRC. Not sure about vinyl.
The Elektra/Asylum albums were snapped up by Anti- Records in the USA for simple single-disc reissues, with reasonably good remastering. Guessing that Island won’t play ball for any catalog transfers.
Someday soon, I would love to see deluxe multi-disc reissues for Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, and Bone Machine (at a minimum).
Am looking forward to more of the Marc Almond reissue programme from Cherry Red/Strike Force Entertainment. This week the slightly delayed ten cd live box has come out, amazing value for a huge amount of material. Next comes a three cd of Open All Night.
The releases are all very fairly priced and done carefully in my view. Pretty refreshing! They also reinforce what an amazing solo career Marc has had and continues to have.
Thanks to those involved.
Any chance they’re making the releases by ‘Marc And The Mambas’ available again in the foreseeable future?
Most of my favourite artists who are still alive just don’t release much very often.
Stevie Wonder had a quick burst of a couple of new songs on line two years ago and then nothing. A Time For Love was released in 2005 and Conversation Peace ten years earlier. He’s a lazy sod!
Paddy McAloon, Mr Prefab Sprout is also a lazy so and so. Crimson Red is ten years old this year – hurry up with the zillion songs you could release.
Kate Bush – she’s bone idle! All that talent going to waste, she’s probably forgotten how to play the piano. Fifty Words For Snow was out in 2011. I could think of a thousand words for frustration with the lack of new, or old, music releases these three artists could put out.
Fortunately you can rely on the Field Music gang to get new music out there. David Brewis has a new solo album, The Soft Struggles, out in February.
Rachel Unthank (The Unthanks) and Paul Smith (Maximo Park) have a folk album, Nowhere and Everywhere, out in February, under the name Unthank : Smith
GRACE JONES – LIVING MY LIFE.
Still waiting……….
Yes, yes, yes to many of the rumours and speculation mentioned here. I will add my requests here, just in case it helps someone, somewhere, push the button on a potential physical release.
ABC – I’ve seen nothing online except in the comments here on SDE, so hopefully the rumours are true for the LoL SDE.
Alan Parsons Project – stand-alone blu-ray spatial mixes of any albums that haven’t yet been released in that format would be welcome (including ToaFC outside of the recently announced deluxe box). Alan has released DVD-As with the last two solo efforts containing 5.1 mixes, so it seems he has an interest in surround formats.
Bowie – the final “era” vinyl box set to complete my collection.
Cure – potentially 3 new albums if what Robert Smith mentioned early last year is true.
Def Leppard – the fourth vinyl box set to complete that run (and perhaps a reprint of the first box set on vinyl as I came to the party late and only managed the CD box of that one).
ELO – SDEs of anything would be interesting, but I’m not sure how many non-album tracks Jeff Lynne would have squirreled away.
Kiss – I’m reluctant to put them here, as the prices for their SDEs are extravagant, and I have no use for all of the paper tat they include (stand-alone blu-ray spatial mixes from now on please). I paid top dollar for Destroyer, but have not been tempted by CotN. I have a soft spot for the Elder and think that would be awesome in surround.
Marillion – a continuation of their albums in SDE format continuing the recent run would be great.
OMD – if there is new music in the pipeline, yes please! Also, I would be in for SDEs of any of their albums (already have the 2-disc versions of, I think, the first 5 albums).
Prince – anything, everything, whatever I don’t already own (fan-club only releases and SDEs of any album would be awesome).
SuperDeluxeEdition.com blu-ray surround/spatial series – hopefully we’ll see more reissues in spatial audio (more Tears for Fears please, Paul).
Tears for Fears – a continuation of the box sets would be welcome. I’m hoping for Elemental next, but ELaHE would also be welcome.
Thompson Twins – I have the 2-disc releases of the first 5 albums, which are jam-packed, so I’m not sure what else they could release to make them SDEs, but if there is unreleased non-live content, I’m in.
The The / Matt Johnson – a new album, and any/all of the four unreleased ones, please.
Toyah – an SDE of Chameleon, similar to the Anthem set, would be appreciated.
On another note, I was expecting a “Best new albums of 2022” post from Paul, but that seems unlikely now that we are almost a week into the new year. I purchased very few new albums last year (I count 9), but the two that top my list are Forenzics “Shades and Echoes” and Tears for Fears “Tipping Point”.
Alan Parsons – I heard on a Life in Surround review of the coming year that a standalone Blu-ray of Alan Parson’s ToaFC will be out in May, two months after the boxed set is released.
ELO – Considering the limited amount of material dredged up for the ELO masters in 2001, that the albums are available in 96/24 and 192/24 from Qobuz, and Lynne is apparently not a fan of multi-channel (the Live at Wembley Blu-ray had only a stereo mix), I can’t imagine any more ELO releases. Some of the masters have been lost (including OOTB) so discrete multi-channel may not even be possible with current technology.
OMD – remasters have been 1 CD except for A&M (CD+DVD), and Junk Culture (2CD). A new album is coming out this year (Bauhaus Staircase) but am doubtful we’ll see much else like remasters of Crush and Pacific Age, as Paul H is dealing with a house move and parenting his baby daughter.
Derek,
I stand corrected on the OMD remasters – I am over 14,000km away from my physical collection for 18 months, so couldn’t have a quick check before posting that. I believe all 5 reissues contained bonus tracks and it would have been nice to continue that with later albums. Still, that is exciting news about a new album, and hopefully a follow-up CD of extended remixes of some tracks as they have done for the past 3 albums.
That is good news about the Alan Parsons Project, another spatial mix for my collection.
I expected nothing from Jeff Lynne re: ELO, so am not surprised. A few others had mentioned this, so I just added my thoughts.
A deluxe edition of David Mc Comb’s Love of Will would be nice.
Another educated guess for this year would be, following the format of last year’s Number of the Beast, that a 40th anniversary of Piece Of Mind will come out this year. My guess is a 3LP with the Dortmund ‘83 concert. Talking of Iron Maiden, they have just become the 5th ‘music group’ ever to be commemorated with a set of stamps, just behind such luminaries as The Beatles, The Stones, Queen and Pink Floyd.
XTC were supposed to be working on deluxe versions of the 2 Apple Venus albums but it has been a long time since Andy P gave an update. There may have been issues with either finding or remastering the original recordings? Any other hints out there?
Steven Wilson told the XTC podcast – “What Do You Call That Noise?” – that some parts are missing; the multitrack masters don’t contain everything that was on the album as things were overdubbed or flown in in the mix. He suggested this included at least one lead vocal track. So a surround mix is currently impossible unless all the bits can be found.
Disastrously the AV master recordings have been damaged. We will definitely be given the next instalment of the Blu Ray box set issues later this year with Steven Wilson’s mix of The Big Express album.
That would certainly be a contender for Reissue Of The Year 2023 for me as it was the album i discovered XTC with and it is still my favourite being played at Casa Klaus several times a year.
I dreaded that this was one of the albums where the multi track masters went AWOL so i’d really love to listen to a 5.1-mix by SW for this.
Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)” album is the perfect candidate for a super deluxe reissue now. Dave and Annie were at their most experimental during this time, and there is loads of bonus material: B-Sides, 12″ versions, BBC Sessions, and something else called “The Breakthrough Sessions”, their “Live At The Kibuki” concert in San Francisco in 1983 (an excellent recording from their tour that year), and not forgetting their amazing videos. There’s even a student film version of “The Walk”. Also, “Sweet Dreams – The Video Album”, featuring their performance at the Heaven nightclub.
As for Thompson Twins, I think their reissues need a proper “reboot”. The Edsel reissues years ago did a decent job, but the remastering quality on a lot of the bonus tracks was poor, unfortunately. If they can get the same people who put together “Remixes & Rarities” back in 2014, it would be ideal, since the remastering was excellent on that collections. Also, they deserve a proper “definitive” greatest hits compilation. Most of their best of collections have a “throw anything on it” selection of material on them. The only thing I liked about that was that a random previously unreleased gem would appear now and then. I picture similar approach like what was done with “ABBA Gold” – start the track list with the biggest hit, right off the bat, and carefully craft the order from there. I actually compiled a track list a few years ago out of curiosity to see how it played out, and I think something like this would work:
The Best Of Thompson Twins (idea for track list):
1. Hold Me Now 4:46
2. Doctor! Doctor! 4:39
3. Lay Your Hands On Me (U.S. Single Version) 3:44
3. King For A Day 5:20
4. Love On Your Side 4:25
5. Lies 3:15
6. In The Name Of Love 3:49
7. Sister Of Mercy (UK Single Version) 4:55
8. You Take Me Up 4:26
9. The Gap 4:43
10. We Are Detective (UK Single Version) 3:05
11. Watching (UK Single Version) 3:48
12. Don’t Mess With Doctor Dream 4:24
13. Revolution (UK Single Version) 3:23
14. Nothing In Common 3:30
15. Get That Love 4:03
16. Sugar Daddy 3:32
17. Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? 3:18
18. Come Inside 3:58
19. Play With Me (from the “Cool World” soundtrack) 4:06
I know it is all a matter of opinion and subjectivity when it comes to compiling any “best of” compilations but any “Best of Thompson Twins” must include the superb Make Believe (Lets Pretend)
Just found out a couple of exciting releases coming in June this year.
1. A new Swans album (a bit niche I know, but very exciting for me!)
2. PJ Harvey new album. I won’t take the sting out of the press release by giving title and exact date but can say it’s her first album since her debut to not be on Island! (which explains the timing for the demo albums and the pre-Xmas rarities / b-sides etc comp).
I’d love to see Blanket of Secrecy released as part of the SDE series. The 40th anniversary recently passed for ‘Ears Have Walls’. I would include their 2nd unreleased album called “2” as well.
No Simple Minds mentioned.
The band production during the last decade has been good. Many items released and new music as well.
1991 Real Life will be 33 next April but no 30th released has been mentioned yet….. would be a pity as it was well accepted by hard die fans and charts….
Many live versions sow the light during the years but demos and other stuff is are missing.
Duran Duran
There will be a tour in 2023 and maybe some live releases as well but we are still missing a real Arena super deluxe releases.
The Sing blue silver shows were recorded but not everything was used for the Arena, still many tracks missing and vinyl hasn’t been reissued since 1984……
Liberty….. and thebWedding album deserve a super deluxe treatment and a vinyl reissue as well
U2
Pop has been skipped by the band in their reissue campaign… but what about a complete Rattle and Hum ?
And where’s the Joshua tree 2017 tour dvd /blu ray ?
They have put the 2017 Joshua Tree tour concert film up on the web for free.
Doubtful there will ever be a physical release but if it happens maybe part of a Songs Of Surrender deluxe?
I can see a 33 and ⅓ anniversary release on vinyl coming up for SM’s ‘Real Life’ in August. ;-)
This week is the 50th anniversary of the release of the Mahavishnu Orchestra’s ‘Birds of Fire’ – the pinnacle of all rock, in my view. It’s also (Mahavishnu) John McLaughlin’s 81st birthday this week. There are several concert multi-tracks from 1972-73 in Sony/Columbia’s vault, plus Atlantic have the full Mar-Y-Sol Festival performance from 1972 (one track from which featured on the VA 2LP of the event), but who knows if they’ll ever see the light of day… For such a monumental band (1971-73 then 1974-75 in its Mk2 incarnation), only two discs of ‘posthumous’ material have ever appeared – ‘The Lost Trident Sessions’ in the late 90s and in the ‘Complete Columbia Albums’ box a disc of selected extras from the two Central Park concerts that were the basis of ‘Between Nothingness & Eternity (1973). Not even the promo single edits of ‘Open Country Joy’ or ‘Sister Andrea’ have ever made it on to CD. It’s not too late, Sony, to summon the will to address the previous obstacles and make a really meaningful set of unreleased Mahavishnu happen.
This post makes me think of something slightly different: a boxset of the 1975 Miles Davis japanese tour. The one that gave us Agharta and Pangea. This is for me the pinnacle of jazz, rock, whatever. Everything went downhill after that. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to Mahavishnu orchestra. Don’t they sound a bit like Weather Report or Return to Forever ?
The Mahavishnu Orchestra sound to my ears nothing like Weather Report or Return to Forever – neither of whom I care for at all! :-) I’ve written two books about John McLaughlin, each one stopping at 1975 with the end of the mighty Mahavishnu Orchestra. We all like what we like, of course, but McLaughlin’s star burned incredibly brightly in that early 70s period when he finally ‘found his voice’ after a 10-year pro career in Britain and 2 years in New York – and, amazingly, that totally pure artistic vision (instrumental music at lightning speed, in odd time signatures and at 130 dB) coincided for a couple of years with phenomenal popular and critical success. McLaughlin is so completely concerned with today and tomorrow that he can’t inhabit the same legacy curating space as, say, Robert Fripp (a McL fan) – and consequently, today, outside of jazz buff circles, the memory of Mahavishnu has faded. My books are in service to documenting that time and the journey towards it.
Birds Of Fire the pinnacle of all rock? I have tried to listen it several times and every time i have almost nervous breakdown. The other one that has the same kind of affect to me is Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. Nice incident that John McLaughlin also plays in it!
Just my opinion, Jarmo :-)
I look forward to (potentially) Rubber Soul, & eventually when enough has been remastered, the much loved two Beatles ‘balcony’ compilations perhaps.
Another album turning 40 that I’d love to see an SDE of (and almost certainly will not get one) would be Ministry’s With Sympathy. Quite a few remixes and stray tracks to go with it, plenty of which have never been reissued. Don’t necessarily think it needs a spatial mix, but wouldn’t turn it down, either. It stands out so much from either side of their career that having it all summarized in one place makes too much sense.
On a looking back to 30th years… I get nostalgic, as it was the first year of uni… how about some deluxe editions of some great albums, including debuts :
Suede – Suede
Radiohead – Pablo Honey
Nirvana – In Utero
Blur – Modern Life Is Rubbish
Bjork – Debut
Depeche Mode – Songs of Faith and Devotion
Pet Shop Boys – Very ( inc Relentless )
Cypress Hill – Black Sunday
Jamiroquai – Emergency on Planet Earth
The Cranberries – Everybody Else Is Doing It, So Why Can’t We ?
Terrorvision – Formaldehyde
Don’t encourage Suede. There have been two expanded editions already.
I’m intrigued as to whether they will repackage A New Morning (Again) or Bloodsports this year. Maybe both.
On the basis that we got another big expanded Nevermind 10 years after the last big expanded one, I fully expect to get another In Utero too (which is great if they don’t replicate stuff from the 2013 box).
I’d absolutely love some Bjork expansions as long as it’s not just a load of extraneous remixes.
PSB have an expanded version of Very in the Further Listening series although it doesn’t include Relentless of course. It’s pretty good though.
I would be really happy if Nathan Johnson’s Glass Onion ( and Knives Out ) scores were released on a physical CD, not just a crazy priced vinyl and streaming only options.
A wishlist, not necessarily based on reality, but let’s just hope:
*Prince: Diamonds and Pearls superdeluxe;
Parade Superdeluxe (wouldn’t be so rare to have 2 deluxes since 1 company has the right for the soundtracks and another one for the regular albums)
*Madonna: debut album done right (remastered+remixes+live audio+premadonna demos+dvd with videos and concert)
*U2 Zooropa superdeluxe
*Sade: deluxe editions of all her albums
*Eurythmics: deluxe editions of all albums
*Stevie Wonder: complete albums collections remastered
*Bruce Springsteen: another deluxe edition, could be Born in the USA or Tracks 2
*Elton John: whatever from the 70s
*Bob Dylan: new bootleg set at the end of the year
*Rolling Stones: deluxe album from the 90s (Bridges to Babylon?)
*Björk: deluxe Debut
You missed the biggest box set to be released in February Paul and that’s the twice rescheduled Horslips ‘More Than You Can Chew’ 30+ Disc set. Along with His Bobness’s 10LP ‘Fragments’ set, the Thin Lizzy ‘Live & Dangerous’ 8CD set and Ocean Colour Scenes ‘Yesterday and Today’ 15CD set I can’t think of what else I’m going to play in before Spring comes around.
Of course there’s the mysteriously numbered #6.5 George Harrison ‘Concert For George’ from the SDE Surround Series, hmm I wonder what’s going to be coupled to that?
Anyhow good luck Paul with the Surround Series and a Happy New Year to you and your helpers and anyone else reading this.
I was going to mention Horslips but somehow it got left off!
My wish list, with varying degrees of likelihood…
John Cale’s Paris 1919 is 50 years old this year – I’d love a SDE of that, even if it was just a more opulent vinyl edition of the Rhino reissue from a few years back. His new album is out in a few weeks, though, so I’d imagine the focus is probably on that (and fair enough).
Sticking with the Velvets connection, I’d hoped following the Lou Reed RCA/Arista box that we might get an upgraded version of the Sire recordings with the remasters for those albums in a lavish physical package, but after the New York SDE I wonder whether individual albums is now the preferred model.
Finally, echoing other comments, I’d be very keen for an expansive Scott Walker box, or even better boxes: the numbered albums, the wilderness years, the Tilt trilogy and a soundtracks collection. But I reckon this moves beyond wishful thinking into pure fantasy.
The 50th anniversary of the Red and Blue albums is this year. Will Giles and Sam do a remixed ‘1962-1966’ and ‘1967-1970’? Is that why ‘Hey Jude’ and ‘Revolution’ were left off the White Album deluxe, the clean version of ‘A Day In The Life’ left off Sgt Pepper and the ‘Get Back’ single not included on Let It Be? Just a thought….
As both ‘Boy’ and ‘October’ got the coloured vinyl treatment, a red vinyl of U2’s ‘War’ would be nice for its 40th…
A deluxe of The Smiths last, ‘Strangeways Here We Come’ has been rumoured for a couple of years now. Let’ hope it finally turns up.
I also hope Caiger gets his finger out with that Small Faces ‘Autumn Stone’ reissue (supposed to be ready in 2018).
And as 2023 is the 60th anniversary of their debut single, let us please hope for some deluxe reissues from the Rolling Stones. Us older fans are afraid we’ll be dead before the vaults are opened. Surely the Glimmers and ABKCO can reach some sort of agreement? Then again…..
Regarding the Strangeways Here We Come super deluxe I would think they might struggle for content due to a lack of live material to include. They didn’t tour in 1987 the year the album was released and the last tour was promoting The Queen is Dead. The live material from 1986 was used on Rank and The Queen is Dead super deluxe.
Veteran Australian pychedelic space rockers The Church (“Under The Milky Way”) are set to release their 26th studio album on 24th Feb 2023. It’s a proggy concept album (a first for them) titled “The Hypnogogue”.
This band has the record for more 4 star (or above) rated albums on All Music Guide than any other listed artist and are well worth a deep dive beyond any of their greatest hits packages.
Hello,,
Yes, I would really like to see a multi disc package of the Church. There were 2-cd versions of some of their albums released many years ago (for ex Priest-Aura and Starfish). Most of those records were on Arista records. Please compile a mullti cd – multi label overview. Their first album were released in 1981 , their last up till Hypnogogue in 2017. Best regards Hans
I love The Church, but their catalogue (apart from the often reissued Starfish) is a mess. Those 2 CD reissues are now hard to find (I’ve been searching for Gold Afternoon Fix for ages). The last comprehensive reissue campaign was by Second Motion Records over a decade ago, but even some of those are scarce now, and are unlikely to go back into print, at least if the Church have any say in it (Steve Kilbey told the press that the label ripped him off). It’s such a shame. I love their albums but became a fan very late, so tracking them all down on CD has been a challenge.
EMI Australia released 2-disc sets for all of The Church studio albums 1981-1994, plus an EPs compilation, between 2002 and 2005. No previously unreleased material on these sets, but some of the tracks may have been first time on CD.
Second Motion Records in the USA also released studio album reissues (same as above, minus Sometime Anywhere). Second Motion was set to continue with more material, but a dispute between the label owner and Steve Kilbey over royalty payments ended the project.
The most recent singles compilation is Deep in the Shallows (2-CD), released in Australia and again in the USA about 10 years ago. A few rare single mixes and one song previously unavailable on CD, but otherwise pretty standard.
Would be great to have multi-disc reissues of these albums, and/or a comprehensive box set, but seems unlikely at this point. I don’t think the economics would work (fan base for the band outside Australia is probably not big enough), and SK has a habit of not looking back. The band had some great live shows on bootlegs (especially Chicago 1990), but SK has been mostly against releasing live recordings.
Immersion records did an excellent reissue of Starfish, as documented in this blog last year (LP and single CD). The CD has a few bonus tracks. Best thing about this reissue: excellent remaster, good dynamic range and no excessive compression. The EMI Australia and Second Motion reissues are brickwalled, and far too loud.
A few not covered here…
Last Night From Glasgow are reissuing China Crisis starting with Difficult Shapes and Passive Rhythms in August. They’ve done a great job with the Trashcan Sinatras back catalogue with decent remasters and bonus tracks (especially A Happy Pocket which has just emerged)
Ian Prowse is bringing out a ‘third’ Pele album in January which dates from the mid 90s.
Of the mainstream stuff I’d love to see more XTC BluRay sets – Apple Venus Vol 1 seems closest from social media mentions. Of course, I’m waiting for London Town too.
And a simple reissue of the first three Men They Couldn’t Hang LPs is on my personal wish list. But there probably isn’t much of a market so doubt these will happen.
Beautiful South and Housemartins also seem big opportunities.
Looking forward in particular to the Lilac Time Astronauts package which is sure to be tremendous – Pete Paphides always does a great job.
I believe XTC Big Express is on the way….
aph1, thanks for the tip re the Trashcan Sinatras – A Happy Pocket reissues (2-CD set added to my wishlist).
I’ve always held the opinion that the best music to come off this planet came between 1965 and 1975, with 1973 being the sweet spot where everything that was released just seemed flawless. I’ve had many debates over it – and that’s understandable, as it’s all very subjective. But sweet spot ’73 is 50 this year, so I’ll weigh in on my wishes for 50th anniversary SDE’s of some favourite 1973 gems:
ALICE COOPER – Billion Dollar Babies & Muscle Of Love. A catalog criminally under-represented in this age of SDE’s – and these are two of their best.
AMERICA – Hat Trick. Their first three are their best. We never got SDE’s for the first two, so how about this one?
BLACK SABBATH – Sabbath Bloody Sabbath. This is my favourite album of theirs, and it’s odd they’ve passed it over thus far. The California Jam audio/video would be a nice addition to a SDE of this one.
DAVID BOWIE – Aladdin Sane & Pin-Ups. My two favourite Bowie LP’s. A Pin-Ups SDE could include the full audio & video of The 1980 Floor Show, plus it’s also never had a coloured vinyl release. And I do hope Aladdin gets the full SDE it deserves. It also needs a remix – if only to boost the bass and make the Watch That Man vocals audible!
BUCKINGHAM NICKS – Buckingham Nicks. I don’t need a SDE, just a CD and vinyl reissue. Finally. Please. It’s 50 years!
CHICAGO – Chicago VI. A 50th silver vinyl reissue is already planned, but we need a good Chicago SDE.
DEEP PURPLE – Who Do We Think We Are. The final MKII album for 11 years is a gem, and deserving of a 50th SDE.
THE DOOBIE BROTHERS – The Captain And Me. I don’t think there have been any Doobies SDE’s, and this is a great place to start.
FACES – Ooh La La. Much maligned because of Rod’s minimal input, but I think it’s their best album, and I hope it gets a SDE.
GLADYS KNIGHT & THE PIPS – Imagination. This ’73 gem desperately needs a remix, and I’m sure there’s more in the vault.
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD We’re An American Band. Another overlooked catalog. They need a SDE, and this may be their biggest album, so…
GEORGE HARRISON – Living In The Material World. Hari’s 1973 almost-as-good-as follow up to ATMP. I’d love a dive into the vault on this one.
JETHRO TULL – A Passion Play. My favourite Tull album. Already a superb SDE (as all of theirs are), so how about a coloured vinyl or picture disc to mark the 50th?
ELTON JOHN – Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player & Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. My two favourite Elton LP’s both came out in ’73. GYBR has been done to death, but I’m hoping Don’t Shoot Me… gets the SDE treatment this year.
LED ZEPPELIN – Houses Of The Holy. My favourite Zep album. Already a fine SDE, but it would make a beautiful picture disc.
JOHN LENNON – Mind Games. Not sure what happened to Sometime In NYC, but this one needs a 50th SDE.
PAUL McCARTNEY – Red Rose Speedway & Band On The Run have already been done quite nicely, so I’ll just hope for a London Town SDE…and maybe that red vinyl RRS album we never got.
MOTT THE HOOPLE – Mott. Yet another catalog overlooked at reissue time. This gem deserves a SDE.
PINK FLOYD – The Dark Side Of The Moon. Can they top the marbles box? Doubtful, but the 50th anniversary of this should be recognized in some way.
QUEEN – Queen. Not sure why the did The Miracle in ’22 (or at all), but the debut needs a 50th SDE.
THE ROLLING STONES – Goats Head Soup. The SDE remix is puzzling, and the CD’s are horribly brickwalled, but content-wise it’s a fantastic SDE. So for the 50th, I’ll happily grab a coloured vinyl or picture disc if they’re released (original mix please).
RINGO STARR – Ringo. If any one Ringo album should have a SDE, it’s this one.
STEVE MILLER BAND – The Joker. The one that began his string of 70’s commercial hits. Let’s have a SDE of this one.
STEVIE WONDER – Innervisions. It’s just too landmark and amazing NOT to get the deluxe treatment.
YES – Tales From Topographic Oceans. Like Tull, the YES SDE’s are exemplary – and the TFTO one is stellar. So instead, I’m gonna hope for a 40th anniversary SDE of 90125. The Rabin era needs some love…
Good choices. As a big Alice fan I agree we are long overdue some SDEs of any of his material. I have some old surround DVD-As of Billion, Muscle and Nightmare (which are great as they contain some alternative versions of tracks) but would welcome a reissue series. America’s first album is superb. There is a surround version out there if you want to part with £60+ for barely 35 mins of music so I’d agree with you on that. With you on your other suggestions too!
I had to disagree from several records, if not all:
ALICE COOPER – Their best albums are School’s Out and Billion Dollar Babies
DEEP PURPLE – Who Do We Think We Are is far from gem. Only gem i found is Woman From Tokyo
FACES – Their best album is A Nod’s As Good As A Wink…
GEORGE HARRISON – Living In The Material World has always sounded very boring
GRAND FUNK RAILROAD – All their records from 1969-73 are hit and miss and don’t deserve any kind of SDE
JETHRO TULL – Sounds like overblown joke by Ian Anderson
JOHN LENNON – Title track is classic, others so and so
STEVE MILLER – Apart of title track i almost fell sleep when i listen to it
And the best year for rock was 1971!
I believe work has already started on the Elton ‘Don’t Shoot Me’ deluxe set according to the Hoffman forum. However there are whispers that it might not even be a physical release – would be disappointing if true.
Also Brian May is currently working on the next edition of his ‘Gold Series’ (with the awful logo) of 1983’s ‘Star Fleet’ project with Eddie Van Halen. Apparently he is remixing the full thing and there will be a shed load of outtakes from the cutting room floor. Be interesting to see what materialises.
It’s also the 50th anniversary of Queen’s debut… I doubt there will be a box set of this album, but who knows. It was kind of covered with the 2CD version from 2011.
(PS how about a unboxing video review of ‘The Miracle’ box set from late last year?)
I think we might hear from Peter Gabriel this week about his new album. He tends to do announcements when it’s a full moon and it’s a full moon this Friday… new song dropping maybe?
I’d like to think we might also get the BBC box set from Genesis that producer Nick Davis said he had been working in a YouTube interview.
Hey Rob, great minds and all that – the Mad Hatter is my avatar on the Hoffman forum
I would be very surprised if Elton did not release Don’t shoot me as a physical release given his own preference for collecting LPs and other physical formats.
If you look at his latest stuff it has come out in brilliant box sets, picture discs, and he has himself mentioned they are producing a farewell tour film which I am sure will translate into a major box set.
Rory Gallagher’s estate has been releasing great anniversary sets for both his debut album as well as Deuce. Well curated sets of studio outtakes, alternates and live material.
In-between they also released some great live material as part of RSD and digital (Cleveland Calling ’72, San Diego ’74).
I hope they keep up with these as Live in Europe passed the 50th Anniversary last year and both Blueprint and Tattoo celebrate the 50 mark this year.
The Only Ones vinyl box set .
Or, a complete collection like the recent sets by Bob Mould and Ocean Colour scene. It can compromise 3-4 or more cds of studio material and a number of live recordings from 1977-80. Hopefully Peter Perrett will release a new record during 2023 , the last came I think in 2019. Best regards Hans
Hi Hans.
Humanworld was released in 2019, an excellent LP.
I’m old enough to have original vinyl versions I got with “pocket money” ( I was 13 in 1979) , but I’d love a vinyl box set of the 3 LPs and some extras on another LP.
And a CD box too, please Peter!
Love to see a decent vinyl reissue of Captain Beefheart’s ‘Strictly Personal’ with the original gatefold cover and with extras. His best album IMO.
Ultravox! – the COMPLETE Island recordings.
How did you miss this https://www.discogs.com/release/8637106-Ultravox-The-Island-Years ?
Why have AC/DC never released any SDEs?
I’ve always had the impression that AC/DC has very few studio outtakes that they’ve wanted to release; maybe they save their unused ideas for the next album.
It would be nice if they released their earliest recordings with singer Dave Evans (one single was released, and one concert has leaked). It’s definitely tamer than their classic material, but it has real historic value.
I’d LOVE to see more Bon Scott-era live recordings. I think AC/DC was one of the very best live acts of the 1970s. Many great shows are on bootleg, so maybe they don’t see any money in it. But I’d happily pay for proper, cleaned-up live shows, maybe as an expanded If You Want Blood You’ve Got It SDE?
the eternal question
I’d LOVE some RE AC/DC in 5.1+!
For e.g. “Back in Black” in 5.1.
Whew!
That album reminds me of “Uni” (College). My housemate would return from drinking and put on “BiB” @0200 (@“11”db) make Mac & Cheese and pass out! Sans water, the noodles on the stove would catch fire, set off the fire-alarm and wake me up.
Good times!
Lord forgive us (well him), as our downstairs neighbour was a single mom with 2-kids.
Still, what a great album (post Scott) and IMO deserving of RE SURROUND TREATMENT, even as “basic” as it is.
A Wham! singles box set would make my year! (If it’s complete, remastered, and on CD, I should say.)
By my count, there are around 60 or so tracks that would belong on a complete singles collection (not counting bootlegs, unreleased live tracks, or George Michael collaborations).
Francois Kevorkian did a fantastic job remixing “Enjoy What You Do (Wham Rap)” (the titles were reversed on this 12-inch): this definitely deserves a re-release. The three 1983 Mega-Mixes belong here, too, even though they were released by their label without the band’s permission.
If it includes the ultra-rare Extended Version of “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” (from a 1984 Philippines 12-inch) and the Instrumental Sound Shower Mix of “Careless Whisper” (from a rare Japanese radio station’s promo vinyl), that would be a huge bonus.
I too was thrilled to read about this project. Instant purchase for sure.
They should get you and Paul on this project in order to avoid another GM re-issue disaster.
Oh, not me – I’m just a music fan who happens to be a researcher. Leave it to Paul to do it right! :)
I’d love some Alison Moyet box sets, I know we got some 2-disc CD reissues but I’m sure there’s enough stuff for Alf at least, and maybe a remix of Raindancing as Alison was never happy with the American- friendly production.
That will never happen. Moyet was extremely reluctant even to do the 2CD sets and that project dragged on for literally years.. so long that Sony – who did most of the work – didn’t get the rewards and they ended up at BMG!
One band I would love to see get their career properly put together in a deluxe set would be The Wild Swans. I’m a big fan of Paul Simpson and I know he has a book coming out this year that I already pre-ordered, partly about his life in music (they were huge in the Philippines – who knew?). I’ve purchased music from his official site before and he has loads of interesting material in the vault. I heard rumblings of a new Wild Swans release too.
I know there was a documentary made about that era in Liverpool called “Revolutionary Spirit” https://www.imdb.com/title/tt14534832/
Has anyone seen it? It doesn’t seem to be commercially available. Not certain if it was officially released, but there are a few short excerpts on Vimeo. Anyway, it would be really cool to get some Wild Swans music/video out there.
”Revolutionary Spirit” is out in March. Grant McPhee, the director, is on Twitter if you want to keep up to date with news on the doc.
Nice to see some Paul Simpson love here. Always look forward to whatever he puts out. “Death Must Be Beautiful” was one of the highlights of last year.
Good coverage of potential 2023 releases Paul. Two main thoughts.
First, the much talked about releases of ‘London Town’ and ‘Back to the Egg’ will most likely have a limited edition like ‘Wings 71-73’ with exclusive live content to it.
This will be taken from the Wings final gig of their 1979 UK concert tour at Glasgow Apollo – much bootlegged and professionally recorded at the time by Macca for a potential live album which never happened. And the Wings set for ‘Concert for Kampuchea’ which only six numbers have been previously released from on the 1981 album of that name (which has never even had a CD reissue since then).
What with the endless delays of this product it would be great if Macca stepped up and gave us full value music wise and offered up full versions of both concert sets. Have heard it muted that a ‘Wings 78-79’ set might only include selections from both concerts. One argument for this is that previous Macca Archive sets have taken tracks specific to their issue from the 1979 Apollo gig (an example being ‘Every Night’, ‘Hot as Sun’ and ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ from the 1979 concert put as extras on the ‘McCartney’ Archive set). That is no reason to give us a small selection; and is certainly not the case for the ‘Kampuchea’ set.
Second, in all the talk of 50th anniversaries you forgot in the Beatles section the most cheery, uplifting Beatles related album which could be rereleased this year. Namely ‘Ringo’ which with John, Paul and George all on it, as well as Klaus Voormann and Billy Preston, is the nearest we ever got to a Beatles reunion – and should be seen in that light. And it has some great songs on it.
Good to see action on the Wham! Front as that has long been sadly neglected. Would be fantastic if it brought together not just singles but everything – considering Wham!’s entire catalogue is so small!
Happy new year to everyone who is part of the SDE community and keep up the great work Paul. It is really appreciated.
I looked at my collection and in honesty I think I’m actually happy with it and one thing I don’t want to do is re-buy what I already have. I’m seeing some comments about things like Luxury Gap. Seriously, great albums like this have already been re-released and were awesome. Plus H17 gave us a great box set few years back, even though massive cock up with pressings and replacement discs were eventually issued.
Only a TOP NOTCH compilation box set like John Hughes Film collection would make me part with my money now or better still Blank & Jones deliver some new instalments of So80s or So90s, they are so thoughtfully compiled.
Squeeze would be a welcome addition to any SDE release list as would Warren Zevon.
40th anniversary of The Style Council, hopefully the vaults start opening
1. Yes Close To The Edge has been long promised with Roger Dean seen creating new artwork on his YouTube channel months ago.
2. Jethro Tull should get those album ‘book sets’ re-released as there are lots of fans that missed out in the earlier releases, plus it will stop the eBay sharks making £100-£200 per set.
3. Peter Gabriel 1, 2, 3, 4 overdue box sets, why start with SO?, get his best albums the deluxe treatment! (ooh, controversial!)
4. The band time forgot – The Movies – well overdue reappraisal, The Movies, Double A, Bullets Through The Barrier, India, Motor Motor Motor could be a Cherry Red box set with outtakes and videos (there are loads)
5. Cyril Havermans, the forgotten Focus guitarist has two long forgotten solo albums well worth foisting on our ears again…
I believe work on R.E.M.’s Up 25th is well advanced. However for me the New Adventures was a disappointment in terms of extras, though the vinyl was spot on, really well done top marks.
Do you think Abba will do a half-speed of The Visitors?
There is Camille to come from Prince via Third Man Records, it’s unclear when or by what means it will come out. Fingers crossed this year, maybe it will be the next Vault edition.
Re Steven Wilson:
“The Future bites was a great album but released during Covid Lockdown it failed to chart and the tour was postponed and cancelled…”
Correct about the tour but the album charted at No 4 in the UK.
“What happened to?:
The Sisterhood – The Gift (Sisters of Mercy-related) that was to be reissued in late ’19/early ’20″
Due on Jan 20th.
Moonloop,
Any link to a pre-order? I signed up for notifications on this years ago, but have never heard anything.
I saw the link further down in this post – https://viveleshop.com/collections/the-sisterhood-gift/products/the-sisterhood-gift-cd . Ordered yesterday, shipped today!
I wondered about that too.
Thank for the info moonloop. Saw a used copy last month at a record store for $$$. Rare to find.
An Atmos mix of Dark Side of the Moon would be the third spatial audio mix of that album. From a historical, documentary point of view, it would be desirable to release the original quad mix from 1973 in an affordable format. AFAIK it was only available in the Immersion box so far (apart from the original quad LP), which was expensive and is out of print by now.
After what Guthrie has achieved with both “WYWH” and “Animals” in 5.1, a more discrete and immersive 5.1 of “Dark Side…” (more akin to the above two titles) is in order, imo.
Both a NEW 5.1 mix AND an ATMOS mix would, really, be an awesome treat for the 50e RE of the iconic “DSotM” album.
Looks like we’re (at least) getting SOMETHING new in SURROUND.
We’ll know shortly.
…and then there’s the status of “THE WALL” (original album) RE in 5.1 (sigh)…
All being well, 2023 will be a good year for Randy Newman aficionados (and on a number of fronts too).
Let’s hope the Madonna reissues start at the beginning, and do it right! Speaking of ‘if you’re gonna do it, do it right!’ – fingers crossed about the Wham! box set too!
What about a 50th Anniversary Half Speed Master of McCartney’s RRS following on from the first 3 albums?
Yes, that will undoubtedly happen.
My wish for 2023 (or any year!) is a reissue of Age Of Chance’s debut album 1000 Years Of Trouble. Hopefully this would be a much expanded version, with all the early releases on Crush Collision and Twilight World not on the LP – including the terrific B-sides and 12″ remixes of Kiss etc – plus the excellent Peel/BBC sessions, all on a CD box set.
This is surely an ideal candidate for Cherry Red. Despite being such a groundbreaking band in their use of hip-hop beats combined with punk, Northern Soul etc, fashion, vinyl cover art, they seem to be sadly neglected and due for a reappraisal.
Would love to see a super deluxe edition of The Icicle Works’ self-titled debut. I realize that they released an expanded edition back in 2006, but I would really appreciate an expansion with more bells and whistles. Their debut is one of my favorite albums of all time and it has held up extremely well nearly 40 years later.
It’s 3cds & 35 tracks so not sure what else there is other than demos perhaps. Agree a great album.
Another obscure 80’s band I’d like to see a collected boxed set of material is Fatal Charm. They were on the Carrere label I think.Summer Spies,King of Comedy and You Know I’ll Never Believe are fab tunes I’ve always loved that failed to make any chart impact.I bought the 12in of Summer Spies when it originally came out and I still own it and play it sometimes as I love the extended version of this tune. The band even performed Summer Spies on Channel 4’s The Tube I recall.Like B-Movie their career never took off but they have a lot of good tunes and a mass of material that has never been collected together.Sadly probably another too obscure a band for any career anthology ever to be released!
Though they are probably too obscure a band for most people’s tastes,I have always enjoyed B-Movie.They still exist and have had a very patchy stop/start kind of career with bad label/ publishing deals, abandoned lp’s and decent shelved songs left in demo form etc..In the end only a few lps and not that many singles have ever gotten a proper release.Such a meagre output for a band well over 40 yrs old.
So a boxed set assembly of everything they have done to also include anything not on their main releases would be my wish.Sadly I fear I am in a very small minority in wanting this,so will probably never happen. Also some Labels the band had dire dealings with probably have some of their shelved stuff hidden so deep in their vaults they have forgotten it even exists.
If you aint heard them then check out So Far away,Other People’s Lives, Repetition,Nowhere Girl, Remembrance Day,Letter from afar, for a short snapshot of what they are like.
I think that they are ripe for a rediscovery and become a cult band in the same way that DAF is.
I can see a lot of these comments being recycled in the biggest disappointments of 2023 thread!
yuhuuu my year is saved WHAM! and Sananda Maitreya…. my wish would be something from Calvin Russell a very underrated musician
Some 50th Anniversaries missed include Elton’s Honk Chateau, Deep Purple’s Machine Head (although I doubt there’s anything left in the can for this one), Steely Dan’s Can’t Buy A Thrill, Neil Diamond’s Hot August Night (again, probably nothing to add), Stevie Wonder’s Talking Book.
Hoping for Elton’s Don’t Shoot Me…. but I really, really, really hope they don’t bypass Honky Chateau. (No filler on that record)
Also on my wishlist for 2023 (which has been the same for quite a few years)
Bob Seger – sadly neglected catalogue. At least a career defining box set
Deep Purple – Made In Europe SDE (due out 2015 & still waiting)
Black Sabbath – Master of Reality SDE
Neil Diamond – properly remastered late 1960s – 1980 albums
Supertramp – anything is better than nothing – again as a bare minimum, a career defining box set
Free – long rumoured box set that never eventuated
Quadio – Sony to continue this series and release the Santana quad albums. (The first 3 albums have already been released in Japan)
Steely Dan – an updated box set
The list goes on…………..
Happy New year everyone.
I second the Bob Seger set.
Santana’s Quadraphonic mixes of “Santana”(Debut), “Abraxas”, “Santana(3rd album),”Caravanserai” , “Lotus” & “Carlos Santana & Buddy Miles Live” are available in deluxe packaged SACD’s in Japan.
also, Paul Rodgers vetoed the Free(19 disc). boxed set
New album by The The or the release of his “unreleased” albums would be great!
New single out in February and given the length of time since the comeback tour I fully expect a new album to materialise. That said, as an alternative get Pornography of Despair, Gun Sluts, Spirits and Karmic Gravity mastered and released as Matt did with See Without Being Seen.
It would be a little late, but I’d love to see a Friend or Foe 40th anniversary. Especially after the wonderful (no pun) job done on the Kings of the Wild Frontier 40th.
This has already been mentioned but to chip in too, Yes’ 90125 was released 40 years ago in late ’83; Accepting that, in terms of potential inclusions, Trevor Rabin’s 90124 is already out there, I would love to see a box set reissue of that amazing album to include a spatial audio mix. Failing that, a standalone spatial audio release of 90125 would be more than welcome!
Biggest disappointment of 1983: the awful 12″ mix of Owner of a Lonely Heart…
Not quite… The original remuxes of both Owner Of A Lonely Heart and Leave It, both singles from 90125, are IMHO the great forerunners of the most creative 12inches Trevor Horn & Co would produce from 1984 onwards for ZTT Records’ main artists in the 80s.
If you are a ZTT and ZTT-related fan, those 12’ers are most likely cherished objects in your collection.
Back then, if anything, I wished the 3rd single It Ca Happen got the same treatment…
Indeed. Must be one of the most awful 12 inches of the 80s.
I just want to put in a “yea” vote for this remix. I think it’s brilliant, unexpected for the time and very engrossing. Still recognizably the song ,while recontextualizing nearly everything about it, and still ending up with something pretty danceable and fun. One of my all-time favorites from that era, and not easy to come by on CD. Would absolutely welcome it as part of a 90125 reissue.
Yeah I like this remix too (one of my first Maxi Singles)
Agreed, I didn’t really like any of the remixed/extended material that came from 90125. I’m more than happy with the album cuts and those are what I’d love to hear in spatial audio.
Madonna’s reissue singles on Spotify over the last year brings a little hope she will do the right thing, as they contain all the mixes, including unreleased and hard to find mixes.
Also if there was a SDE of Faster Than The Speed Of Night by Bonnie Tyler, 40 this year, I would be very happy, though to be honest I don’t have much hope based on past releases.
I’d like the Pretenders reissue series to continue with Learning to Crawl & Get Close.
Here’s hoping Macca drops the Archive releases we’ve been waiting for – I have a feeling he’s going to package them together with some bonus content as he did with ’71-’73, perhaps with some bonus live material.
Hopefully, the Prince estate will see the goodwill they’ve developed with the fans and keep going with their releases. I’d much rather see “Around The World In A Day” although that was initially released in 1985 if they’re aiming for an anniversary release.
“Let’s Dance” deserves a SDE and they could include the “Serious Moonlight” concert filmed for HBO as a bonus.
The Police are a bit of a mess, and by most accounts, Sting is getting more difficult with age – hence the whole “…Nothing Like The Sun” digital-only fiasco. However, I would totally be intrigued by anything from their catalog.
Wham! has some interesting video in the vault – would love to see that get released.
Someone mentioned Sade and I’ve heard something about that too – here’s hoping.
Any truth to the Rolling Stones putting out a new album this year? Some say it’s finished and is the last thing Charlie Watts recorded. Seems like the right time for it.
Lastly, I might just be getting old, but I don’t get all the U2 apathy – they’ve been solid for most of their career and I believe they have one more great album in them. I’m excited to see all the activities they’ve got lined up for this year.
Bit of a cock up that U2’s ‘Surrender’ album didn’t come out with Bono’s book. And if Larry really is ill, will they dare go out on tour with another drummer?
Didn’t realize Larry was in such bad shape – drummers do take a pounding over the years.
Apparently, he does want to continue with the band (in the right circumstances), but needs time to heal up properly. I know Bono desperately wants to do some gig in Las Vegas later this year – that might be simple enough for Larry if everything else falls in line and they can plan for a 2024 tour with Larry healthy and ready to go.
Saint Etienne’s So Tough turns 30 in February, but an anniversary release has yet to be announced and it may be awhile anyhow after the limited edition releases of Fairfax High and The Character Of Saint Etienne in December and the forthcoming colour vinyl reissue of Good Humor next month. I’m hoping So Tough gets the boxset treatment that Foxbase Alpha and Tiger Bay received.
I’m (rather hopelessly in fact!) hoping for a massive Scott Walker box set (with the addition of so far unreleased tracks, of course!) of his entire solo output on Philips/Fontana/Mercury between 1967 and 1972…
Excellent idea ! There was a boxset called Five easy pieces, but that was a while ago.
A looooong time ago… and rather expensive (at the time) for what it included.
Looking forward to the Thin Lizzy and Porcupine Tree sets and hopefully we’ll see another Prince reissue this year. Also the Black Sabbath Tony Martin era albums are being prepared for a box set which according to Mr Iommi will be out at last in 2023.
Also Aerosmith celebrate the 50th anniversary of their debut album and are tallking of an extensive box set and reissue campaign starting in 2023 so let’s hope something becomes of that.
Looking forward to several releases mentioned above as well as these that are coming out soon:
The Selecter Celebrate the Bullet 3CD Jan 13 (US release date)
Bad Brains The Youth Are Getting Restless CD Jan 18
Dance Craze 3CD, 3LP Mar 24

Hoping we don’t get any more SDEs with CDs and vinyl together…
The Sisterhood’s Gift is coming later this month: https://viveleshop.com/blogs/news/the-sisterhood-gift
The Sisterhood re-issue cd is out Jan 27th with vinyl to follow later, should imagine we’ll get the Cowboy as a 2 disc casebound book, Soft Cell re-issues are currently in the pipeline for release later this year and also I think we’ll never see any PSB album released further than what we’ve already had (sadly)
I also would like to know what happend to Sinead O’Conner “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got” 30th Anniversary box set.
I think tragedies in Sinead’s personal life probably pushed reissues down her list of priorities.
Is Sinead O’Connor involved in these reissues? I didn’t know that …
Yes she is.
Another one.
Jimi Hendrix 3CD+Bluray Electric Lady Studios set.Not to be confused with Electric Ladyland album.
It is the 1970 sessions for the posthumous First Rays Of The New Rising Sun aka Cry Of Love album. It was scheduled for release in April 2022 but was pulled.Expect it second half of 2023.
I know I already posted this in the 2022 SDE Disappointments article, but here is my glass half full approach in hoping for some/any of these in 2023. You never know when an artist, the “right” label person, or reissue producer (e.g., Vinny Vero) might read your post and say “YES!”
Delighted to hear about new albums from Howard Jones, OMD, the Cure, U2, and Peter Gabriel (will believe that last one when I’m holding it in my hands). Very excited for the ABC and Lilac Time reissues as well.
Here then is my wish list for Deluxe/Expanded/SDE releases (on CD please)
Prefab Sprout – Steve McQueen, Jordan, From Langley Park, and Andromeda Heights are begging for Spatial Audio
Thomas Dolby – Golden Age of Wireless, The Flat Earth also in Spatial Audio
OMD – Crush
Nik Kershaw – Radio Musicola
Kraftwerk – Computer World
Mike Rutherford – Smallcreep’s Day (mirror Tony Banks solo reissues)
Bruce Springsteen – Born In the USA era box (it is disappointing to hear Bruce’s thoughts on this as posted by others)
Human League – Dare box set (I detailed this somewhere else in this article’s comments thread)
Scritti Politti – Cupid & Psyche ’85 (can’t even imagine how much cooler this would sound in Spatial Audio)
The Housemartins – The People Who Grinned Themselves To Death
Simple Minds – Real Life
Propaganda – 1234
Christians – Happy In Hell
Tears for Fears – Elemental (not sure I’m down for a big big box but definite yes for a 2CD/1BR expanded set)
INXS – the Swing, Listen Like Thieves, and Welcome to Wherever You Are
Nick Heyward – Postcards from Home, I Love You Avenue
Steve Winwood – Back In The High Life, Talking Back To The Night
XTC – English Settlement, Mummer, and Apple Venus CD/BR
Yes – Going For The One, Tormato, Drama, and 90125 CD/BR
Catalog Reissue Campaigns
Steely Dan – serious audiophile reissue campaign (Atmos/5.1/Quad Remasters) of Can’t Buy A Thrill through Gaucho
Beautiful South, Sting, The Police, The Psychedelic Furs (Columbia/CBS era), and Michael McDonald (WB/Reprise era) – please reference the XTC/Marillion/Deacon Blue/Jethro Tull reissue campaigns for consistently good content at respectable price points
Andromeda Heights in spatial audio would be superb. It’s such a wonderful album.
If I’m not mistaken there are some phasing effects on parts of the album that tend to throw the soundstage ‘outside’ the speakers, sort of like parts of Amused to Death by Roger Waters.
Great wish list! It’s criminal that Cupid & Psyche has yet to be remastered at all. I would add OMD’s The Pacific Age. Fantastic forgotten album.
Great list DiscoDave2000. Several years ago MOJO reported that there was to be a Psychedelic Furs box set. So many years have passed that I removed it from my post here this year…
Surprising they haven’t done anything with the Beautiful South albums (or the Housemartins second album). Get on it.
If the ‘right’ label person is reading this please get the INXS and Sting deluxe reissues out on CD…
Great list.
Thomas Dolby’s in spatial – Absolutely. Two of my favorite albums ever.
Tears for Fears Elemental – I’m down for the full big box, but a 2CD/BR would certainly be sufficient.
XTC – I’d add The Big Express, as that was my first intro to their genius and a highlight of my musical education.
The Police – I need it all, and all in spatial audio. Sad to hear in the SDE article that it appears Sting is blocking releases. I wonder why.
The Big Express and Mummer were remastered, repackaged and released last year and are available from Ape. English Settlement as a 5.1 is very unlikely as they’ve lost the tapes. They did find the original tapes for Big Express recently (as announced by Andy Partridge) so let’s hope Mr Wilson is nearing completion of that for a 5.1 2023 release as rumoured. I also heard Apple Venus 1&2 could be next.
Unfortunately, Acoustic Sounds, who are starting a Steely Dan SACD series, are oblivious to the fact that (in the day) Steely Dan’s “Can’t Buy a Thrill”, “Countdown to Ecstacy” & “Pretzel Logic” albums had quadraphonic mixes, and “Gaucho” had a 5.1 mix.
Should hear about Dark Side’s 50th anniversary any day, I would think. I don’t care how many times I’ve bought it before, I’m getting the 50th anniversary offering. It could have an old sock from Gilmour and a bluray disc and I’d buy it.
In all seriousness, while we got a live DSOTM set in the Immersion box, would be nice to have another live document.
or The Middle Years box
I believe the Immersion sets and the just released Animals package are viewed as the Middle Years. But I wouldn’t turn one down.
I’m looking forward to a 40th anniversary edition of Donna Summer’s ‘She Works Hard For The Money’ album, in the style Crimson Music/Demon Music did Donna Summer’s ‘Another Place And Time’ (1989), ‘The Wanderer’ (1980), ‘I’m A Rainbow’ (1981), ‘I’m A Rainbow’ (1981/1996), ‘A Hot Summer Night’ (1983) and ‘Donna Summer’ (1982) in media book form with bonus tracks (12″ versions, 7″ versions and a hot 2023 remix of the title track). Since the ‘She Works Hard For The Money’ album is part of the Universal catalogue, and a one off album she owed Casablanca/Universal, this is not part of Donna’s original Geffen/Atlantic catalogue and Driven By The Music/Crimson/Demon doesn’t own the rights to this one. Where Crimson/Demon Music is putting lots of efforts on re-issueing deluxe versions of Donna’s catalogue from 1980 – 1991, Universal is sleeping and doing nothing with Donna’s legendary Casablanca/Universal catalogue, which includes her most important body of work, which she did with Giorgio Moroder & Pete Belotte. It’s time Universal wakes up and gives Donna the credits she deserves, and keep her legacy alive.
“Her end-of-year message to fans in 2022 was sweet and compassionate as ever, but typically told us nothing about what she was up to, professionally.”
Not directly, but reading between the lines of what Kate wrote, I’m expecting a new album (another double) to be out later in the year, exploring the Pandora myth and finding hope in the wreckage of life inspired by the works of Emily Dickinson.
Good luck with that…
I’d be happier if Kate’s next album explored Emily and Bagpuss’s friendship.
Black Sabbath: Tony Iommi stated in a year-end video on Dec 31 that there will be a “box set” of the Tony Martin albums coming in ’23. HOWEVER, T. Martin was specific to state earlier last year that he offered recordings to fill the albums out but Iommi’s people responded that “no new material” (no bonus material, I gather) can be released as “Black Sabbath” unless it includes a particular lumbering oaf on it. This is precisely why “Heaven & Hell” toured and recorded under that name rather than “Black Sabbath” as $hozzy managed to crowbar their way into Sabbath name rights again.
BUT, Forbidden has allegedly been remixed by Mike Exeter (Sabbath, Priest).
TL;DR: A Tony Martin-era Black Sabbath box is coming in 2023, and while bonus material is doubtful, we can expect remasters and at least one fresh mix (Forbidden).
I really hope some of that Thompson Twins noise turns into some quality reissues. Releasing remastered versions of their old vhs concert videos would be nice, for one thing.
Looking forward to the SW mix of “Who’s Next.” It’s been a long time since that one was upgraded. The “Deadwing” box is also on my must buy. I didn’t notice any mention of J. Tull’s “Broadsword and the Beast” massive box, so probably a late 23 release. Finally, much as I love Steven Wilson and Opeth, one version of the Storm Corrosion album is enough for me as I found it extremely depressing and filed it away shortly after purchase.
I know where you are coming from Mike re Storm Corrosion but after sticking with it for a while, that album became an absolute revelation for me (especially in its surround sound guise). As you alluded to, it’s not one to ‘do the housework to’ but if you’re in the right frame of mind, it’s one to sit (or lie!) to and immerse yourself in. It’s very unusual (in a good way) and here’s not a bad track on there.
A few things I’m excited about which should see the light of day at some point in ‘23 (and haven’t been mentioned yet?)
– Win’s excellent debut finally getting a well-deserved reissue. Legals were close to complete last I heard (but not sure if it’s coming with any extras).
– Some sort of Laibach career-ranging set (dunno if just remasters or unreleased)
– 5LP In The Nursery cross-career set
– A brand new Eric Random album
– Severed Heads “Bad Mood Guy” deluxe reissue
– A book on the Some Bizzare label (check out the launch party at Rough Trade East on 28th Feb inc B-Movie…and Q+A with Stevo?!?!)
– A new The The single “$1 One Vote”
– New dEUS album
– New Dexys
– Phillip Glass reissue series
– Lots of Eels vinyl reissues (eWorks period)
– an interesting looking 3CD Industrial compilation on Cherry Red
– New stuff from These New Puritans
A sample of stuff I’d also like to see getting a release:
– Richard H Kirk (RIP) archive or posthumous releases (even just putting out the deleted InTone stuff in a box would be great!)
– A definitive Tackhead boxset which majors on the pre-Bernard Fowler stuff (keep hoping this will be the next archival set On-U Sound put out).
– A Big Audio Dynamite boxset focused on the original line-up (not BADII or Big Audio)
– New material from David Byrne
– More Coil and Residents enhanced reissues
– [PIAS] finally getting their act together and doing something properly with their old catalogue (SDE’s / box sets of A;Grumh, Front 242, Meat Beat Manifesto, Trisomie 21 etc etc)…not just the silly PIAS 40 12”s they currently have scheduled
– A reissue of the Colourbox boxset which I managed to miss years ago and is now too expensive
– A remastered anthology of The Wolfgang Press worthy of their memory
– New Nine Inch Nails (along with the completion of the definitive vinyl issues)
– Age of Chance anthology
– More Marc Almond SDE’s (Mother Fist, Stories of Johnny, Tenement Symphony…and the Mambas stuff too!
– More early Foetus vinyl (and / or a proper anthology)
– Shamen pre-One Little Indian catalogue given a rerelease (or box)
– New Neubauten stuff / next instalment of “Strategies Against Architecture”
-The long promised Test Dept catalogue reissues
Oh didn’t know about the Some Bizzare book. That’s one to get excited about. I expect there will be plenty more Coil reissues on Dais and ThighP’s label live reissues but probably not anything newly discovered.
So many items on my list that most probably will never get released but would love Brave New World by the Strawbs , Alchemy Dire Straits, Close to the Edge Yes, Out of the Blue ELO to name but Four.
Close to the Edge had a nice reissue a few years ago by Rhino/Atlantic (along with The Yes Album and Fragile), full of new stereo and surround high-resolution mixes, plus some demos and other bonus tracks. The Progeny live sets also covered the 1972 tours quite well. Not sure what else there is to (re-)release, except maybe an Atmos mix.
“…along with The Yes Album and Fragile…”
…and “Relayer” and “Tales Of Topographic Oceans”
Big YES fan, but I mean CTTE got the deluxe treatment in 2013 compete with Steven Wilson remixes. We got demos/America, 5.1 Mix, instrumentals, etc. Aside from an in concert video from that era, what else could we expect? Would rather have deluxe (including Atmos) of 90125 as mentioned below.
Bought my first Strawbs record when Deadlines was reissued back in 2021 (a weird first step into their catalogue, I know). I’d pick up other albums if they got the same treatment.
I would give anything for some ELO SDEs for every album from El Dorado onward.
I can reduce your count to three as there already is a deluxe edition of ‘Close To The Edge’ available including a cd and a br that contains Steven Wilsons new 5.1 and stereo mixes of the album plus the additional track ‘America’ (also mixed in 5.1) and another take on the title track of the album.
Packaging reminds in its understatement of the XTC-releases that also contain a cd and a br.
Sure don’t look spectacular but you can nevertheless spend hours with exploring all the content.
How about another year with a new Kinks boxset ? Chronogically, the new one could be Preversation act I and Preservation act 2 both combined in one boxset. Hope so.
Do you really think that the world needs a Preservation boxset ? I never really dared to listen to them, they were critically savaged.
yes, but everything after MH got a critical savaging… There are (cheap) remasters about – maybe you should give them a go and then decide if you need the box or not
That looks to be pretty certain as I have seen a mock-up of how the Preservation box will look – but I can’t remember where I saw it
I just want to say that the Cure has 5 different new songs performed live up on various YouTube accounts… one an in ear monitor compilation!!! … so the album should finally get issued this year… it would be EPIC for a SDE Blu-Ray. Don’t know how realistic that is, but it is my #1 desire for 2023!
New Sade would be brilliant (last I heard they were back in the studio).
She is amazing!
My predictions for 2023:
REM Up 25 box set
Wings 1977-1979 box set (will start saving)
U2 Songs Of Surrender (reworked U2 tracks)
Lennon Mind Games box set
Would be hopeful for a batch of McCartney vinyl reissues in the summer:
Memory Almost Full
Flowers In The Dirt
Run Devil Run
Off The Ground
I loved REM, but they just lost so much more than “the drummer” when Bill Berry left. I wonder what an Up SDE would be like… There are only two songs I go back to on this long player – At My Most Beautiful and Daysleeper.
Agreed. I remember when the news broke about Bill leaving, and hearing “UP” when it released. It just seemed spineless and airy, with no rock and roll foundation beneath any of it. I’d pass on an SDE of this one.
We never got the final Smiths box-set – for Strangeways Here We Come. It turned 35 in September gone. Johnny Marr was asked about it in 2021 and said “Yeah, there’s been some talk of a Strangewaysbox…particularly on that last album, what we were after sonically meant that the [work in progress] monitor mixes were a really good listen. They didn’t need a lot of bells and whistles. The rough mixes and demos from that period hold up really well. So, yeah, it’s be nice to see them all lovingly curated somewhere or other.”
I’m up for this one!
Re the next Beatles boxed set, will they ever go back to the songs that were missed between Sgt P and the White Album? The MMT songs and other stray stuff that was released on singles or on Yellow Sub. I’d be more interested in a mini box of that material than the early years songs which are best heard as originally released, in mono.
I’d love to see those “stray” tracks collected in every available mix: the old Purple Chick bootlegs had quite a few takes and versions that remain officially unreleased – even though it appears they helped convince the Beatles camp to start the remasters/reissues back in 2009.
(One thing those sets didn’t have, that *really* deserves a proper release, is the original mono long take of “It’s All Too Much”: a rare outtake that is superior to the final version!)
Agree. That material is some of my favourite Beatles stuff and the only era left I have any interest in. It should be attended to just as much as the albums as its own era.
“Duran Duran’s Medazzaland has only just been re/issued on CD and vinyl but an expanded deluxe edition will follow, possibly in the first half of 2023, which will come with bonus material and demos. “
I find that kind of release strategy a bit puzzling. Wouldn’t you want to have those close together, time-wise? Somebody who wanted to have the album on CD would’ve bought the simple edition and now would have to rebuy it to get bonus material and demos.
Look at how they did Future Past. Although technically the Japanese CD has the “Complete Edition“ track list, the rest of the world potentially had a frustrating experience with that release and only now can get the whole album on vinyl. I personally do not think I will bother with the new vinyl edition unless I get it on sale, since buying the initial deluxe hardback & (unadvertised) truncated green vinyl only to end up purchasing the Japanese CD has left me thinking I have given enough to that project -including the concert 2 states away!!!
i will agree. Future Past’s release was a complete mess. I understand the usual CD and then deluxe CD, and maybe the extra track in Japan, but to offer a horribly undertracked vinyl edition, only to then magically be able to restore all the lost tracks then some really left me feeling cold about jumping on the vinyl purchase bandwagon for this one. Not even a “sorry for the vinyl purchasers 10 months ago” comment. I could imagine this coming out as an anniversary edition, but so close to the horrible initial vinyl release? Real slap in the face stuff.
I know that there’s quite a few readers here regarding David Bowie’s output in the 1970s as The Ten Commandments Of Pop but am i really the first one here pointing out that ‘Let’s Dance’ has its 40th anniversary this year?
I can’t believe that i’m the only one who discovered Bowie with that album and then began to delve into his earlier records and believe that his estate and the record company could earn some decent money by upscaling it.
Agreed, though as much as we’ve seen a lot of Bowie releases, I would be surprised to see this.
Oh yes. Love that album. Absolute classic and I’ll take a boxed set without hesitation!!!
It should be a celebration of Let’s Dance. But does anything beyond the one demo and the Serious Moonlight concert exist to make a deluxe set of it?
Hopefully something significant from the Prince Estate. I know there are issues with finding some of the XTC masters, but another cd/blu ray release would be great.
Yes, something significant. Something actually unreleased unbootlegged and without inexcusable digital artifacts please!
Any chance we can convince Steven Wilson or Trevor Horn to do an Atmos mix for Yes – 90125?
Man – I couldn’t hand over my money fast enough if that came out in a physical format…
You ain’t kidding!
Oh my – I would be all over this kind of release too!
While we’re at it, can someone convince him to do surround mixes of 10CC?
Abso-bloody-lutely. At the very least someone should do a spatial audio Best Of for 10cc.
I’m Not in Love in ATMOS!?! The mind boggles………
Now, that hadn’t occurred to me before, but I completely agree that all the Mercury output is ripe for 5.1 or Atmos.
…a UNIQUE (separate), hirez 5.1 ALONG with an ATMOS mix should ALWAYS be offered, REGARDLESS of the title.
I think the story is that the YES SDEs stopped at Relayer because the masters could not be found for Going For the One, Tomato, and Drama. Surely the masters for 90125 couldn’t have gone missing too. Those Steve Wilson mixed Panegyric editions (circa 2013) are great.
My understanding was the Yes SDEs stopped because Wilson wasn’t a fan of the later albums.
But there are other remixers out there…..
Some more
-Porcupine Tree Live In Amsterdam from last years tour
-Joni Mitchell Archives Volume 3.Unreleased music in the period from For The Roses to The Hissing Of Summer Lawns
-Elvis Costello Painted From Memory.2 discs of expanded version plus live disc of songs from the album plus disc of Costello doing Bacharach classics. No faith that they won’t go the pretentious, elitist path that resulted in the fiasco of the vinyl only Armed Forces SDE.
-Neil Young. As we’ll as Archives Volume 3 we should get Crazy Horse Early Daze, the Rainbow and Ducks Official Bootleg Series,Ragged Glory 2 and Chrome Dreams.
-Bruce Springsteen. In recent interview he said there will never be a Born In The USA box.The next 2 archival releases are a box of 5 unreleased post 1990 albums and a Nebraska box.Maybe only the first one this year.
Bruce didn’t exactly say never on BINTUSA, but he did suggest that all the good stuff from that era was already on Tracks 1. I think he’s being coy and it wouldn’t make sense to put that out until ’24 anyway. That said, he’s going through his “rich man in a poor man’s shirt” phase again – he has always struggled with legacy of that album and the legendary status it provided him.
Although I’m sure Sony would love his support on the matter, they did give him a fortune for the rights to his catalog and publishing, and I’m fairly certain they are going to find ways to exploit it eventually. “Nebraska” is a year late, but that might happen, but word is he’s not too keen on releasing the electric versions.
His new covers album is meh at best according to almost everyone (fans and critics alike – the AllMusic review is fairly spot on), and his comments about the absurd ticket prices for the upcoming tour haven’t played well either. His music is part of the soundtrack of my life, and I’ll get Tracks 2 if that drops, but some of us have grown weary of him. His constant pursuit of authenticity rings a little hollow these days.
Bruce Springsteen’s new album isn’t ‘meh’ to me and I’ve been a fan for 50 years this year. The guy is 73 we aren’t going to get another ‘Born To Run’, ‘Darkness’, ‘Nebraska’ or ‘The Rising’ out of him. He’s going to make music he enjoys and I sure as hell enjoy ‘Only The Strong Survive’
OOAA but wrong.
I’m a big fan, not 50 years strong, but trust me, I’m a big fan. As a matter of fact, I would add Letter To You to your list – it was an amazing album (as was the film) so I know he still has some greatness in him for certain.
The beauty of music is that it is very subjective, and while I’m happy you like the new album, to these ears it’s mostly meh. Some songs work, others don’t, and the production sounds a little synthetic. I like that he still takes chances with his music, this one just feels like a bit of a misfire. Perhaps Volume 2 will be better.
Not sure what OOAA means – shrug.
I think it’s a type of battery
Bruce’s most recent($30 million) recording contract renewal requires the delivery of “Tracks 2” and expanded noxed sets of “Nebraska” & “Born in The U.S.A.”
And then there’s the rumblings about Elvis Costello’s SDE multi-disc boxset for Painted From Memory. And the eternal ‘new’ The Cure album!
Would love a Painted From Memory set. A top 10 favourite of all time here. If nothing else, I’d like the Session at West 45th ‘live in the studio’ film on Blu or DVD, having bought the VHS in NYC way back when (no longer have a VHS player, NTSC compatible or otherwise).
Agreed. Truly stunning album…
I know every year I bang on, as do many others to be fair, about the lack of any SDEs for Kate’s first 5 albums. However there is something even worse than that disappointment. The dangling carrot. It’s when we are told, by multiple, reliable, horse’s mouth sources that something is coming, sometimes with pictures, sometimes even with a tracklisting and then it’s bloody crickets.
No one in any of Kate’s inner or outer circles has *EVER* said anything about a potential SDE of any of her albums, oh it gets discussed, I’ve put tracklists up and potential 5 disc sets have been cleverly sequenced to bursting. But it’s only ever wishful thinking. So if there is no promise, the disappointment is mostly (entirely?) of our own making.
The album I want more than anything was first teased a good few years ago, I saw tracklists, I saw discussions. I saw interviews where it was said by the actual bloody, brilliant artist, not someone who did backing vocals 37 years ago and emigrated or played fiddle on a couple of tracks (no disrespect to any violinists – I love you all). Covid…yes, yes. I noticed. But the world has started turning again. I am not in the industry so I have no idea how arse-bendingly frustrating it must be to deal with lawyers and rights etc. But still. Say nothing. Don’t say you are definitely going to do something, raising 37 year old vintage hopes, and then fall by the wayside. How difficult is it to say nowt? Kate’s done it for 45 years, irritatingly well. Announce it when it is done. Eventually coming out and saying you couldn’t do it because of legal issues or whatever is no excuse and far, far worse. Say Nothing. Until it is done beyond reproach, beyond the point of no return. No take-backsies.
Because We Love You was a seminal, cruelly ignored, vital album of my youth. One of my Top 5. Ever. There is an SDE coming, it was promised. Fortunately I am too out of shape to hold my breath for too long.
That would make my day, my week, my month or even my vernal equinox. Please and thank-you very much.
The COVID excuse will rattle on for years no doubt, it’s annoying when the majority are expected back to work or to act as if it never happened yet labels and artists still milk it. It’s the front line workers or shop staff that never had a day off during the pandemic I feel sorry for.
I really do believe Kate is done in terms of reissuing. It was a big deal for her just to do the boxsets so a SDE of anything is a ship that has sailed I think. Aside from, like so, so many, hoping for an updated singles collection complete with remastered videos (which I sincerely doubt we’ll ever see), new material is the best we can hope for. But, the more I look at those 2 Remastered sets, the more it looks like a thank-you-and-farewell package. Just a crying shame for the fans it wasn’t done more creatively and more completely. Disappointed to this day at what she left out.
A Japanese Singles Collection [2?]CD/DVD for Kate Bush would be great
“Pink Floyd’s classic The Dark Side of the Moon reaches its half-century although there will definitely be a physical box set, with a new Atmos Mix, for that particular title.”
Is this definitely confirmed by the band and/or the record company?
No, it hasn’t been officially confirmed by either of those parties.
OK thanks. If DSOTM is reissued again, I would be fine with a stand-alone Blu-Ray disc with high-resolution mixes, similar to the Animals disc purchased from the SDE shop (thanks Paul). Don’t need another fancy box set at this point.
The Atmos mixes have been registered with ISRC codes, and the physical release has been mentioned in teasers for the official anniversary book. We can draw our conclusions.
Wow I just learned something new – ISRC. Thanks @JulesRules. Where does one go to find if some entity (artist or label) has applied for new codes for new songs/mixes?
I’m afraid I don’t know :D
The codes were posted by other fans on the Steve Hoffman music forum and QuadraphonicQuad. I think there’s a database or something?
According to this web site…”[The March] date will also see the launch of a luxury box set containing a re-release of the album together with numerous related music items.” Pink Floyd to Commemorate ‘Dark Side of the Moon’ 50th Anniversary With Various Titles | Best Classic Bands
DSoTM got a very nice CD reissue for its 20th anniversary, a SACD for its 30th anniversary, and the ‘Immersion’ edition was just before the 40th anniversary. So the smart money’s on some kind of release to commemorate the 50th… assuming that David and Roger don’t spend the next five years arguing over the sleeve notes :-)
I wonder if Waters and Gilmour stop arguing when their accountants show them how much they are likely to earn from the reissue?
Don’t think so. :))
I’m in if there’s hi-res marbles. Otherwise, no deal.
Plus, Roger “The Hat” Manifold’s disembodied dystopian laughter in “On the Run” at 1:54 could have the Alan Parsons EQ profile applied (Shure SM57 source), as opposed to the “bootleg” Peter James/Chris Thomas EQ profile so often used (Shure SM58 source). Whole different vibe.
SDE taught me everything I know; don’t hate the player, nor the game.
Similarly, I have a lot of wishes that have to roll another year: London Town/BTTE, Deep Purple-Made In Europe Box, Police- Regatta De Blanc Box, Fish- Vigil and Internal Exile deluxe sets and Queen- Live Killers. A definite release not mentioned is Madness- The Liberty of Norton Folgate. This is the first time the full thing has ever been on vinyl (there was a 1LP version before but this is 2 LP).
Some of my wishes ( and educated guesses) are Wailers-Paris Theatre 1973 and Catch A Fire (hopefully with the original Jamaican mix)(50th Ann), Dirty Harry full soundtrack on vinyl (it is coming on 4k for 100 yrs of WB), Billy Joel vinyl box (possibly a live set), Now Yearbook 78 and XTC- Go 2 (only album not on reissued vinyl), Alice Cooper- Billion Dollar Babies (50th).
Lastly, I am hoping for some box sets to finally come on vinyl that have only previous been on CD: AC/DC- Bonfire, Alice Cooper- The Life and Crimes Of, Thin Lizzy- Live And Dangerous expanded box.
Also, in the tradition of Live And Dangerous, other expanded live boxes would be welcome.
Arrrgh! Queen – Live Killers, yes! They’ve got those recordings they used to create the original album, and the CD versions over the years show they know what went wrong in the original LP mix. So do a proper remaster, slap the full concerts on some discs, make up an “alternate live killers” just for fun, and let’s have a grand old box set! Throw in a DVD with some radio interviews if it makes Roger happy!
Seconding that! I was hoping we’d get LK instead of ‘The Miracle’ but alas….
Re: Deep Purple’s Made In Europe box set. A live album always standing in the shadows of Made In Japan but gee, it was good.
The new mixes were done in 2015 & slated for release that same year. DP (Overseas) went into liquidation and legal issues followed from thereon. Surely these are now resolved.
Fish has confirmed Vigil and Internal Exile for this year probably direct from him only.
The Alice ‘Life and Crimes of’ is a nice set but well past it’s sell by imo. There are some very dodgy tracks on that plus he’s done so much more (really good) material since then. A reissue campaign with extra tracks would suit me rather than just another ‘best of’ package which misses out all the great stuff!
Well well well… I find myself remembering what I’ve written the last few years:
1, Wedding album SDE. 30 Years. We are collectors & we know what should be on it. Also the 40th Anniversary of “7 & the Ragged Tiger” if the band wants to remember that!!
2, U2 “Zooropa” is also 30 this year, I know this was tagged onto the “Achtung Baby” box a few years back but demo’s & an unseen concert audio & visual would be very welcome.
3, Simple Minds “Real life” should see life at some point.
4, Bryan Ferry: 80’s boxsets would be extremely welcome. I’m sure there is more chance of seeing Lord Lucan ride a Dodo than seeing this though, in my lifetime.
5, Depeche Mode: The CD / DVD with the great little docu’s on them would be amazing, brought up to date from “Playing with the Angel” onwards in exactly the same format as before, for us collectors. I have a feeling though that there will be individual boxsets of the size & expense of 101.
6, Goldfrapp “Felt Mountain” should hopefully get an SDE & include footage from the anniversary tour they did last year.
7, INXS “Welcome to wherever you are” a great album that deserves appropriate respect. Any news anyone??
Well that’s a few hundred quid I’m willing to spend my money on this year!!
Oh my you have nailed so many great ones I’d be interested in for sure! Take my paycheck LOL. I made someone a 3 disc wedding album for a past anniversary and Ragged Tiger was my first DD purchase so I love that one so much, although we do have a boxed version already
It’s 30 years since Depeche released “Songs Of Faith of Devotion Live” so I’d more than welcome a box set or at least a vinyl reissue. Ideally of the whole show this time.
Bowie’s biggest selling album ‘Let’s Dance’ looks slated for a reissue along with another Serious Moonlight concert on vinyl.
In some pointless colour variation, I presume
What are the chances of the Before the Dawn shows ever being released on bluray/dvd…would make an excellent SDE. Probably zero to none.
Makes me cry. Want to see the visuals so much!
I have a feeling we will have to wait for La Kate to pass on before that happens, unfortunately.
The third box of Joni Mitchell’s Archive series should be due this year (by the summer, hopefully). Not holding my breath for a Prince SDE but I’d love to be pleasantly surprised.
I hope that there will be a boxset for “Dark Side Of The Moon” by Pink Floyd. It would be awesome if the would include a 5.1 Dolby Atmos mix of this album. I have heard that the next Elton John release will be “Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player”.
I also would be interested in 40th Anniversary of ABC “The Lexicon Of Love” and Tears For Fears “The Hurting”. I know that there was a boxset for this album, but I would be very happy with a standalone Blu-ray audio with a 5.1 Dolby Atmos mix.
Speaking of albums that celebrate their 40th Anniversary :
David Bowie – “Let’s Dance”
Dire Straits – “Alchemy”
The Police – “Synchronicity”
U2 – “War” & “Under A Blood Red Sky”
Cyndi Lauper – “She’s So Unusual”
Lionel Richie – “Can’t Slow Down”
ZZ Top – “Eliminator”
Billy Joel – “An Innocent Man”
Culture Club – “Colour By Numbers”
Huey Lewis & The News – “Sports”
Eurythmics – “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This)”
Stevie Nicks – “The Wild Heart”
Paul Simon – “Hearts And Bones”
Men At Work – “Cargo”
Spandau Ballet – “True”
The Rolling Stones – “Undercover”
Heaven 17 – “The Luxury Gap”
I have a feeling that one of the next Blu-ray Audio from the SDE Surround Series will be Paul Young’s new album “Behind The Lens”.
I would really love to see a 50th Anniversary release (Albeit two years late) of The Concert For Bangladesh. I thought I read somewhere that Dhani Harrison was working on this project. Can anyone confirm this? Lets hope so! Its important history. ( And because I was there! :-)
Peter Jackson is supposedly making a new film from the footage.
We should have hopes for an 11-hr film, no?
How old were you then? I wasn’t there but i turned to 12 on 29.07. I bought my first music magazine about month before and my first vinyl record (Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones) in March 1972. I still have it!
Néapolis by Simple Minds is 25 and now their only album remaining unreleased on vinyl.
It could be expanded to include the Lorely gig, cyber theatre, Italian only tour, Proms appearances and / or those late 90’s extended remixes that got issued on 12″ promo only (plus the official edit releases included with Glitterball).
Plenty of material 1997-1998
Steven Wilson back to work is an excellent new . The Future bites was a great album but released during Covid Lockdown it failed to chart and the tour was postponed and cancelled . The Porcupine Tree revival was fantastic i am now waiting for his solo career to start again
“…is Madge really sitting at her laptop checking Discogs listings in case she’s forgotten about the Peruvian radio edit of a certain single?”
This quote gave me a big chuckle. Both sarcastic & supportive…and very true. Looking forward to Madonna’s first 5 or 6 albums getting a deluxe treatment. Anything after that will have to include a few very golden eggs.
In a perfect dreamworld, we’d get deluxe editions of:
Art of Noise – Below The Waste (now 4 years since the excellent deluxe reissue of In-No-Sense? Nonsense?, is this project dead now?)
The next edition of the Arthur Baker series (no news whatsoever on this?)
Yes – 90125 (They haven’t even released a version with all the period mixes yet, and since Trevor was involved, you KNOW there’s more interesting stuff in the vaults)
Prince – Around The World In A Day (this should be obvious, but you know how that goes with his estate)
Madonna – Madonna (this should be hard to screw up, but the more she is involved, the more dicey it gets)
Also 2023 is the 50th of led zeppelins Houses of the holy
which was released at the same time as Dark side.
Wont be holding my breath as a certain lead singer is not interested
in that band anymore and the lead guitarist is fed up with trying to persuade him(allegedly)
Seems Alan Rankine has died today, your deal alert on The Associates prompted this reply
They’ve been dropping like flies since Christmas…
I’d love to see Vinyl reissues/ SDEs of :
Strange Times by The Chameleons
Mind Bomb by The The
Raise The Pressure by Electronic
@TomWalsh
Not quite an SDE but “ Strange Times” cane out as a 2LP just before Xmas contains the extra “EP” tracks on the Geffen 2CD version
Strange Times [Black Smoke Edition] https://amzn.to/3jOAJvp
Brilliant, thanks for the heads up. Don’t know how I missed this!
There was a 2007 digital expanded version of Raise The Pressure, but it has a mistake .. it would be great to have it corrected and on vinyl
Yes, Vinyl version would be ace. Electronic’s SDEs have been really poor. They really need to get them sorted.
Hopefully 2023 will see the often mentioned but never confirmed re-produced versions of Numan’s “Sacrifice” and “Pure”.
Two great albums that could (in theory) benefit from an overhaul but time will tell…
@Trapdoor
“Pure” is rereleased this month. Nothing extra on it though:
https://amzn.to/3GF5xI1
The Pure you mention is a reissue rather than the re-recording that Gary and Co have been working on along with Exile and Sacrifice.
The packaging on those re-issues (Scarred is also being re-released) looks like a digibook which is nice for those that don’t already own them.
But as Mark mentions it’s the re-recordings that a lot of us are looking forward too.
I’d even forgotten about Exile which again could be superb with Ade’s production.
Just hope Gary makes these 3 releases a priority before another live package…
Anyone who knows me knows what massive a Beatles fan I am but I just don’t care anymore about further reissues It’s such a shame this programme has been turned into an elitist exercise with those lucky (or stupid) enough to buy the box at full price able to claim they are a bigger fan than everyone else…and don’t get me started on the blu-ray. This was never what the Beatles were about.
As for Macca, get The McCartney Legacy book by Allan Kozinn and Adrian Sinclair. Surprised Paul (Sinclair) hasn’t done a review.
What I am looking forward to is the box sets of both New Musik and Telex released in March. Neither contain any new material, in fact the New Musik box is still missing a couple or rare tracks but does have an interview in the booklet with Tony Mansfield, how recent it is still isn’t known.
1983 is the 40th anniversary of one of the most important albums in my life White Feathers by Kajagoogoo, sadly after reading the new interview with Nick Beggs in Classic Pop magazine he confirmed he has no love for the album so is unlikely to get behind any reisssue.
The Bowie estate can take their pick this year
1973, Ziggy Stardust/Aladdin Sane/Pin Ups
1983 Let’s Dance
1993 Black Tie, White Noise
2003 Reality
2013 The Next Day
I haven’t reviewed that Macca book because I’m still reading it – it’s massive.
Unfortunately unless announce, you can only wish [was it something you asked Santa for?]. We’ve already seen how incompetent some music labels or managers are. Overpriced Bowie releases, Revolver without BR audio, mish-mash of McCartney releases, major anniversaries came and went.
Woulds they want to release say another Goodbye Yellow Brick Road when there was one a number of years ago and plenty of other EJ albums that warrant a SDE? [If released, will fans get p?ssed off].
Genesis never had an album specific SDE. Will their label bother? [And no video release from their final tour?]
Plenty of videos that were released on VHS or DVD but never on BR. How great if there was an expanded Live Aid on BR?
2 of Cream’s albums were released. Not the others?
Final Marillion “box” re-issue with Season’s End this year but rumor has it that the band could re-issue other albums after the Warner/Parlophone releases are done.
Really looking forward to Season’s End, the first every Marillion tour I went to so an easy purchase providing the price is right of course…
The wait continues but it looks (I hope) that there will be two Alice Cooper early titles (Killer and School’s out?) will be released with bonus content. Long overdue but we keep waiting.
Two great albums. Would throw in Love It To Death as well.
Pink Floyd The Middle Years aka The Fleecing The Fans box set.
Prince – Dirty Mind/Controversy set.
Wham box set with shuttlecock.
Madonna 1st album box set with appropriate period mixes not something by the flavour of the month or some tik tok nerd.
Toyah – Changeling and Warrior Rock.
I would assume ABBA are gearing up for 50th next year of Waterloo. So nice remaster sets please.
McCartney to finish off Wings, before he repackages McCartney three albums in some wood box.
Lennon and Harrison SDEs.
Monkees Pisces, Aquarius and Jones Ltd SDE to finish the box sets from Rhino.
Bowie Ziggy will do nicely as well this year.
Prefer Beatles Rubber Soul than a 2 for 1 box set of PPM and WTB.
Would really like to see expanded Tropical Gangsters by Kid Creole. The first album I bought with my own money back in 82.
Ultravox Quartet box set
Big love for Thompson Twins, Human League sets
Japan Tin Drum or Gentlemen Take Polaroids box sets?
Spandau and Duran restarted campaigns with proper remasters or get Cherry Red to curate like a Level 42 type Box set.
Would love a Elastica 30th box set.
No hope of “Tin Drum” or “Gentlemen Take Polaroids” SDE’s but there should be an “Oil On Canvas” reissue at some point (vinyl remaster at very least).
No doubt bowie’s ziggy boxset will be announced this week.
6 weeks after the release of the Hunky Dory box?Hardly.
The next Bowie box will be at the end of the year and will either be Ziggy or Era box 6.
I wonder how many, if any, “Ziggy” outtakes actually exist. I was impressed they were able to unearth a few unreleased tracks on “Divine Symmetry,” as I figured that well had run dry by now too.
Wishful thinking lol
The Lemonheads’ Come On Feel is finally getting the deluxe treatment from Cherry Red after weirdly being omitted from the previous couple of series.
The early Green on Red albums are getting reissued with bonus material and we may even see the long promised American Music Club boxset too!
Was this announced? Would like a car button cloth as well that deluxe edition is no longer available.
Also, I think Lemonheads is Fire Records not Cherry Red.
An AMC boxset? Who would be putting that out? In the UK and US? This March is the 30th Anniversary of Mercury!
The AMC boxset will be on Decor Records who manage them, i’m actually working on it, its the early years of the band so 1982-89, after that we’ll be doing ones for the 90’s albums too. Plenty of great unreleased stuff.
This is awesome to hear I’m a huge fan. Hoping CD box in addition to the vinyl.
Great to read about Green on Red reissues. Well overdue. Where did you find the news on these? I cannot seem to find anything on these.
May is the 40th anniversary of Agnetha Faltskog’s “Wrap Your Arms Around Me” album. I’d love a proper SDE of this. As well as the five bonus tracks included on the 2005 reissue, possible inclusions could be Can’t Shake Loose (Special AOR Mix) and Wrap Your Arms Around Me (7″ Edit), a DVD with the making of the album from Swedish TV, all the videos and TV appearances from that period including Never Again.
There is a Bruce Springsteen Tracks 2 ready to go so I understand, perhaps we will see that this year. Looking forward to more info on the Wham singles box set. A rumour also reached me that Wendy James is trying to get a deluxe of her debut off the ground including all the original Costello demos…
Björk’s Debut, Autechre’s Incunabula, Polygon Window (Aphex Twin)’s Surfing On Sine Waves, One Dove’s Morning Dove White and Orbital’s mighty second album turn 30 this year. Would very much enjoy some SDE love for those.
I’d love to see a deluxe version of Morning Dove White. The album itself should sound great in surround, plus a comprehensive round up of ALL the remixes and stray tracks. Add in the second album demos and I’d be in heaven. An album thats been ignored and unloved by the masses for far too long. Its the Magical Mystery Tour to Screamadelica’s Sgt. Pepper!!
It’s the 30th anniversary of Paul Wellers Wild Wood, although im not sure it will warrant a special edition –
He has had a lot of live and rarity stuff out recently anyway
The 2007 deluxe edition was pretty comprehensive for recorded material anyway, plus he doesn’t seem overly bothered with SDEs of individual albums these days, so instead we get the B-sides albums, that massive BBC album (at least the 12.5hr digital version anyway) etc
Quite a few of my favourites are 40 this year, so if there’s additional quality material out there I would love super deluxe editions of –
Aztec Camera – High Land Hard Rain
Cabaret Voltaire – The Crackdown
Cocteau Twins – Head Over Heels
Echo And The Bunnymen – Porcupine
Fun Boy Three – Waiting
Van Morrison – Inarticulate Speech Of The Heart
Violent Femmes – Violent Femmes
Tom Waits – Swordfishtrombones
The Aztec Camera debut got the 2CD expanded treatment about a decade ago – not sure there’s much more in the vaults unless they supplement it with a live recording or (very unlikely) a surround mix.
Odds and sods of the Cabs Some Bizzare-period archive has surfaced over the years but not sure how much else there is to come out.
As long as they steer clear of churning out SDEs of the woeful EMI (Code aside) and 2nd Les Disques De Crepescule releases anything would be welcomed.
The 2008 remaster of Van’s Inarticulate Speech of the Heart is quite nice. The soundstage is really spread out on Van’s remasters This is a great album, but I feel like they are so many that would get SDE before it.
Completely agree about FB3’s Waiting. What a great album that is. I never get tried of listening to it. And what a great year 1983 was for music.
Of course no one knows, but in 2023, shouldn’t we be seeing something KLF related? One can hope.
Well, I think it’s the 30th anniversary of the “Let’s burn a million quid and live to regret it” stunt…
There was a Sky Arts film about that over Christmas…
Two releases coming from Edsel/demon that are flying under the radar is a Mull Historical Society box set of first three albums with loads of bonus tracks and b-sides. Underrated songwriter for those liking Britpop flavored creative indie.
They are also releasing a New Wave of New wave comprehensive box featuring all the recordings of These Animal Men and SMASH. Really cool they are releasing them together. Worth a look. Both out in Feb.
Ah, I was hoping the ‘new wave of new wave’ box set would get a wider release – it was originally a kickstarter only. Given that Demon just released all of SMASH and TAM on vinyl recently, this makes sense. Hopefully it includes the DVD and the bonus tracks from the kickstarter.
KISS’s first album is the next one to receive their Deluxe treatment for its 50th anniversary. Depeche will also likely release the Sounds of the Universe and Delta Machine 12 inch singles boxes.
Let’s hope not as alongside Exciter they are easily the worst DM albums hands down let alone the remixes were atrocious. To be fair to the remixers though it is difficult to polish the proverbial turd.
I wish they’d re-release the excellent X1 & X2 Japanese boxsets instead when remixes and b-sides were actually decent…
I like these albums. Their only turd to me was the demo-like production that was Playing the Angel. But you are correct in there are a lot of boring mixes we don’t need again. X1 & X2, though, were very flawed although beautiful boxes. Lots of tape issues, especially on X2, not present on the corresponding live tracks first released on French color sleeve EPs (to my knowledge anyway). Plus most of what was in there is readily available elsewhere.
Now looking forward to the new Lilac Time sets. One other set that got bumped from last year is producer Rupert Hine’s expanded set of the three albums he released between 1981-83. Well worth checking out for those who spotted his name on various albums of the 80s including those by Tina Turner, Howard Jones , Bob Geldof & Stevie Nicks.
Cherry Red are due to issue the set on January 13th
Very much looking forward to the Lilac Time’s Astronauts. This is a favorite along with & Love For All
2023 is also the 30th anniversary of Saint Etienne’s So Tough. They seemed to have glanced over that particular album when doing the boxsets, issuing one for 1991’s FoxBase Alpha and 1994’s Tiger Bay. Hopefully this oversight is corrected this year.
In the liner notes for Tiger Bay, they mentioned purposely skipping So Tough for box treatment as they felt it was too similar to Foxbase Alpha, and wanted instead to concentrate on the ‘new’ sound of Tiger Bay. I personally would love a So Tough boxset as well, you could include the I Love To Paint compilation as a bonus disc.
I hope we’ll get a vinyl reissue of Tears for Fears’ Everybody Loves a Happy Ending. With the recent critical success of Michael Head’s new LP, I’m pretty sure we’ll see at some point both albums by Shack on vinyl or on CD with extra tracks. And let’s hope for Prefab Sprout’s forthcoming album, “Femmes Mythologiques”, which was supposed to be released five years ago…
I admire your optimism on Prefab Sprout. Is it really five years ago when this release was going to happen? I remember Paddy allowing Radio 4 to broadcast a thirty second snippet of one of the tracks, which I think was when he was promoting the vinyl rereleases. It would be wonderful though for it to come out.
Speaking of Michael Head, I see that the two Pale Fountains albums are coming out on vinyl through Proper. I think they have a deal with Universal so they could potentially do the first Shack album as well.
But will we ever get the Michael Head & The Strands rarities album that was announced and then cancelled years ago?
A 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe of Big Country’s The Crossing would be nice.
Fingers crossed for a 40th Atmos of Big Country – The Crossing.
Now that would be something!
Great article and much to look forward to/save up for!
I’m assuming ABBA’s Ring Ring will get the Abbey Road Remaster treatment, which I’m not particularly interested in, but I AM interested in the same for The Visitors which was due out in 2021 (presumably delayed because of the release of Voyage). Paul, do you have any inside info. as to when this might finally appear? I can’t seem to find any information about it anywhere.
KISS released a super deluxe box set for their 1982 album Creatures of the night including a dolby atmos mix on blu ray as part of the box. This year will be the 40th anniversary of their first no make-up album ‘Lick it up’…. I expect a reissue of that on colored vinyl at least….
Great update, a few gems there. Amazed that Stevie Wonder does nothing with back catalogue, his run of albums from 1970-1976 are as good as anything ever released. Maybe it’s a Motown thing but I thought his contract signed at 21 gave him complete control?
I ask this question every year. Records as iconic as Stevie’s imperial period deserve amazing SDEs.
He never read the small print!
I assumed that was exactly it – he has such complete control nothing can come out without his approval and if he’s not interested it won’t happen.
There were some digital releases of single mixes, 12″ versions, soundtrack songs etc in 2019 but I don’t think he’s ever allowed any outtakes or expanded albums.
Would love to see Adam & the Ants’ Prince Charming given the same deluxe edition treatment as Kings of the Wild Frontier was given back in 2016. It’s not a particularly great follow-up to Kings, but it deserves a little more love than it gets.
Extremely unlikely since I’m not sure Prince Charming did that well and it probably cost Sony a fortune.
The last cd release, which is still available, had six bonus tracks on it, but you’ve probably got this?
Completely agree. Except Adam’s demos are truly horrid. He’s one artist from whom I hope to never again hear more demo tracks. And Adam & The Ants are one of my top favorite groups (not kidding).
But the Kings box was really wonderful (see what I did?) and I’d love some other Adam & The Ants boxes to sit beside it on my shelf. Isn’t that enough reason for them to produce more deluxe sets? <kidding>
Seriously, Dirk Wears White Sox might be more worthy of an SDE than Prince Charming. They could recycle all that pre-Dirk material (again). And the Do It Records singles. And throw in the Peel sessions.
I think (I know, I know, this is the internet age, I should go research the facts and not just spout hazy memories) I think that Prince Charming may have done better in the US. We kind of caught up to ant-mania late, and the videos landed on MTV in 1982, around the time of Prince Charming.
UFO’s No Heavy Petting gets an expanded deluxe remaster on 20 January
One of the items that I’m looking forward to doesn’t seem to have had a mention yet – Hawkwind Days Of The Underground – The Studio & Live Recordings 1977-1979 including Steven Wilson 5.1 SURROUND SOUND MIXES OF ‘QUARK, STRANGENESS AND CHARM’, ‘HAWKLORDS – 25 YEARS ON’ AND ‘P.X.R. 5’
I’m sure everyone has seen this by now, but physical reissues of De La Soul’s first album have been announced today with promise of the other albums up to 2001 to follow. Doesn’t sound like there’s any bonus material but I’m sure people will be glad to have them available at all.
I wonder whether R.E.M. will continue their 24th anniversary reissues (with Up) or the 40th anniversary ones (with Murmur) or both?
I’ve heard that UP should indeed be coming
De La Soul had a difficult few years with their former label Tommy Boy over their back catalogue but had a bit of a win last year. Their 12” singles were incredible value for money, packed with great remixes and non-album b-sides so their old albums definitely deserve deluxe edition treatment.
Now available for streaming.
There’s apparently an SDE of The Boo Radleys ‘Giant Steps’ coming in 2023. No intel on what it will include, but a roundup of all the associated b-sides and remixes (Saint Etienne remix of ‘Lazarus’ is sublime) along with a remastered version of the album would tick all of my boxes.
Adore this album but Cherry Red already did a comprehensive one a few years back. Had every b- side. The one album neglected was Everything’s Alright Forever
I heard about the Boo Radleys one too (in a recent issue of Mojo) but I can’t for the life of me figure out what they’ll include that wasn’t on the 3CD edition that was released a decade ago (that was remastered, had the b-sides and most of the Lazarus remixes). My guess is a proper vinyl release, possibly some live material as there is very little of that floating around.
I didn’t know there was a 3cd reissue previously, thanks both ! Will investigate.
Steg, there was also a 3CD of the Wake Up album as well. I’d like similar treatment for C’Mon Kids and Kingsize. I have the old compilation of their early EPs Learning To Walk, hopefully that can be reissued for those that don’t have it.
I highly recommend their album from last year Keep On With Falling, especially the 2CD deluxe version. Martin Carr is not in the band anymore but the rest of the group have really stepped up.
They did C’mon kids as well. Included a wealth of b-sides and all the remixes. Same format on Cherry Red. They did one for Kingsize but it was just one dics because there isn’t many besides.
tbf all the deluxe editions have fallen out of print now, so they are really hard to come by these days so a reprint would be welcome for those that missed them first time around.
The ones they missed were Everything’s Alright Forever, which has never been shown any love at all, and Ichabod & I, which has been inexplicably unavailable anywhere for 30+ years. It’s barely even mentioned in their discography.
Following the death of Terry Hall I can’t believe no one’s mentioned the 3CD/LP deluxe release of the ‘Dance Craze’ soundtrack (and accompanying dual-format blu-ray/DVD)! Releasing 24th March.
Me too. I’ve got my pre-orders in. I’ve never actually seen the film, so really looking forward to that! I do wish though, that BFI and 2Tone (or whoever owns the rights) could have joined forces and created a limited box set or something, with the film, the film soundtrack and DC album and chuck in a book while you’re at it, now that would have been awesome!
Bit annoying I got it again recently as part of the 2Tone box though!
There are some bundle offers on the 2 Tone website but they are for price discounts rather than limited editions.
Great news this is being remastered and reissued and with “new” content (i.e. the tracks from the film). Most of us had long given up hope.
Deluxe 3CD reissue of Green Day’s Nimrod is out at the end of January (27th), which is the same day as Dinosaur Jr have a 4CD Sire Years 1990-1997 compilation out and the 20th anniversary expanded edition of Eminem’s Eminem Show album is released.
Mogwai have vinyl remasters of Young Team and Come On Die Young in February
And in the unconfirmed but likely pile – Metallica should have their Load / Reload box out later this year too (they missed the 25 year anniversary of Reload a few weeks ago but the set should cover up to the end of the 1998 tour apparently, so 25 years since then I guess).
Paul – I’m surprised that of all people, you would overlook the fact that 2023 marks the 30th anniversary of Duran Duran’s album “Duran Duran (aka the Wedding Album). Given that the album really should have come out in 1992 since advance promo tapes of the album from 1992 exist, minus Femme Fatale and Come Undone which replaced – imho the better tracks of Stop Dead (which came after the song Shotgun) and Time For Temptation (which followed None of The Above), the album was finally released in 1993. It’s pretty much been crickets from the group. The 25th anniversary came and went and now we’re at the 30th.
Kudos, though, for mentioning the Thompson Twins QS&SK. As an ardent fan of the group, I hope something comes out this year for that album. The past reissues have been nice, but you would think that there are demos / rough versions of the songs from the album out there as well as some songs that didn’t make the cut.
Not sure Stop Dead or Time For Temptation are better than Come Undone?!
I think Nick rightly made the point that most of the official era stuff is available but there is no doubt that a SDE could be created.
As you say there are plenty of alternative mixes and demos out there plus I’m convinced the Shelter version on the promo tape was better than the one on the final album.
A 4 CD version would be possible with ease, perhaps coupled with unplugged?
Ordinary World is everywhere at the moment on tv ads and Adam Lambert etc so if they were ever going to do a box set now is the time!
I’m not convinced we will ever see a deluxe Medazzaland but I’d be more interested in that, the demos that circulate are superior to the album in my view. Like with Astronaut they polished all the good out of the tracks when mixing.
Stop Dead and Time For Temptation and Falling Angel are all better than their cover of Femme Fatale & UMF, in my opinion, but don’t necessarily fit the album. Should have kept that album “single vinyl length” with loads of b-sides!!!
Looking forward to a Thompson Twins release of a Quick Step & Side Kicks box set, perhaps with demos, and additional versions/remixes, and ESPECIALLY a bonus Blu-ray with Dolby Atmos and 5.1 mixes….
That would be nice.
Yes along with the Tour concert dvd, preferably on blu ray. It’s gratifying to know that I’m not the only TT fan, spent years in the wilderness with my liking for them and now in the past 3 months I’ve found 3 people who love them as much as me
Could definitely go for that but with the 2 CD set already I am not sure their label would see a market for an even bigger set. Would love to see discrete multichannel mixes for Side Kicks, Gap, and Future Days!
My wishes are the same year after year : a boxset of the complete Birthday Party recordings, with bonus material, but nobody seems to be interested.
Something I’ll never have : a boxset that gathers the first three Kraftwerk albums, + pre-Kraftwerk band Organisation, and maybe a live album.
If you’re a spiritual jazz fan, you probably are aware of the existence of Alice Coltrane. Her albums are difficult to find, especially the ones that she recorded in the 80’s in an ashram. That would be cool to put them back in print.
One last thing : the Black Sabbath reissue campaign stopped in 2021. I don’t know why, maybe because the overpriced Technical Ecstasy boxset did sell below commercial expectations. I really want to listen to a SDE of Master of reality.
Re. Sabbath, I couldn’t make out whether the two expanded Dio-Sabbath albums reissued at the end of the year were related to the reissue campaign. Both newly remastered etc but no SDE format so it wasn’t clear if it was part of the same campaign or just random (which would actually fit into this slightly shambolic set of releases, to be fair).
I believe those two Dio-era reissues were just an American release of the reissues we got a couple (?) of years ago as they didn’t get them at the time. Iommi has also said very recently that the Martin-era IRS albums will finally get a re-release in 2023…
https://blabbermouth.net/news/tony-iommi-confirms-that-tony-martin-era-black-sabbath-albums-will-be-reissued-in-2023
Sorry, yeah, they were 2021 remasters. On H&H it was an updated remaster, slightly different run times on four of the live tracks AND four extra live tracks that were taken from the Hammersmith live disc that was originally released on the 2010 Mob Rules set.
The last 2 tracks on disc 1 plus the 2nd disc on November’s Mob Rules set was completely different to the 2010 set.
I didn’t realise these were already released in the US in 2021 BUT that doesn’t not make them part of the same deluxe release strategy, primarily because it’s all so messy and unexplained. If I were to take a guess, these two albums WERE part of the reissue campaign BUT Ozzy’s team won’t allow them to be promoted as part of it, hence they quietly slip out into the public with close to no fanfare.
Should there be a Birthday Party box, I would hope the rarities/bonus tracks are released solo, so those of us who have all those albums (and EPs) multiple times will not be forced to buy the whole lot again.
Black Sabbath’s SDE’s have been pretty sloppy to be honest. I bought Paranoid in 2016 and the Vol. 4 when it was released 2 years ago. I wanted to buy the Sabotage and Technical Ecstasy ones but after seeing the contents on the former I was pretty much disappointed. The I read the stories of lossy recordings on both box sets which pulled me out completely. I guess I’m not the only one who dropped out after such poor QA. The lossless recordings have been circulating for years and can be found using a simple Google search.
That being said I do hope the debut, Masters of Reality and Sabbath Bloody Sabbath get the Paranoid treatment and have proper QA!
Hi all,
Love and Rockets started a reissue campaign on Beggars Arkive that included a 6-album colored vinyl box set limited to 1000 copies which released in December. The final 2 albums in the box ‘hot trip to heaven’ and ‘sweet f.a.’ both had a side-4 comprising of unreleased tracks/remixes. The individual albums will begin releasing this month, all on black vinyl only, with 2 ‘additional’ albums to round out the collection. I’m guessing a greatest hits/b-sides or live album, but only time will tell!
How did I miss that? Wonder what the retail cost was for that? Have ‘em all on LP rather cheaply as they were bought in the day. Still looks nice!
Manic Street Preachers don’t have an album anniversary this year, maybe we’ll finally see Nicky Wire’s solo album.
Teardrop Explodes “The Culture Bunker 1978-82” box has been confirmed, we’re just waiting for a release date and a tracklisting. The artwork looks like it’ll be a CD sized clamshell package, 6 or 7 discs depending on who you ask. It appears the 2 albums aren’t included – it’s their singles, the b-sides and a chunk of unreleased stuff.
Cherry Red are said to be working on the next box for The Fall; this will apparently cover the 2010s i.e. the period they were releasing their new material on the label. Outtakes and alternates are known to exist so here’s hoping it’s not just bootleg quality live tapes again. Meantime, they have a nice wee set of Dinosaur Jr’s major label years at the end of this month, 4CDs in a clamshell.
I can’t imagine the 30th anniversary of Nirvana’s In Utero will be passed up.
Also hoping The Wedding Present will compile and reissue the “24 Songs” from 2022’s 7″ releases in some way.
Onwards!
Re. Manics, it’s the 30th anniversary of Gold Against The Soul (I doubt there will be anything new after the 2020 reissue), it’s the 25th anniversary of This Is My Truth… (we got a fairly substantial 20th anniversary version so I doubt that will be marked either) and it’s the 10th birthday for Rewind The Film (but that was released in deluxe format at the time so I’m not sure it will get marked specifically like Send Away The Tigers was on its 10th anniversary).
Well, OK, there’s no *new* anniversary for the Manics. I can’t see them going back to RTF/Futurology that quickly and, like you say, all the demos were issued at the time, something they started doing with Journal For Plague Lovers. The only remaining albums for which something useful is really possible are Lifeblood and Postcards From A Young Man, both of which had a whole album’s worth of b-sides scattered around various places.
Agree completely with that (only pointed out the others due to the fact that they have been known to revisit their anniversary stuff – ie 10th and 20th versions of both EMG and HB) – I’d be amazed/disappointed if they don’t do something with Lifeblood next year for its 20th and I reckon they’ll do something with Postcards for its 15th the following year.
I’d still like a Manics BBC sessions set (there will be dozens of tracks lying around that haven’t had a release yet) and some proper live stuff. Maybe we can get hi-definition releases or CD/vinyl releases of some of the vast amounts of live material that’s out there.
I’ll take a 2010s Fall as long as it’s not all live recordings. Great period for MES.
Remind me again why Magical Mystery Tour can’t be released as a SDE? It has a couple of my personal favorite Beatles songs and sort of stands out in the late ’60’s era now as the one unreleased album.
They already issued a deluxe when the film was reissued in 2012 with a DVD, Blu-ray, book and the double 7″.
Also, the 6 songs couldn’t be expanded to a level that would justify the kind of product Apple/Universal want to release. They had a hard enough job squeezing one out of the 14-song “Revolver”.
It has been, so there’s that…
SDE it was, but not in the format of all the other recent SDEs. No mulitrack remixing (if I remember correctly. Or was the film remixed? The vinyl wasn’t) … In any case, there’s plenty of scope to build a really decent SDE from all the material recorded between Pepper and White. Combining MMT and 1967-recorded Yellow Submarine tracks might be one way, but not everyone might agree with that … I would.

Cherry Red seem to be gearing up towards a Changeling reissue with a 10” EP based around its first single due in March.
I’ll be interested to see if there’s anything more to come from the Howard Jones vault with them; conceivably they could do with the the Last World Dream show (in the Dream Into Action box set in 2018) what they did last year with Live in Japan (from the Human’s Lib SD box also from 2018) and turn it into a standalone DVD release with a Cd and separate coloured vinyl release. They could also issue Action Replay, or 12”ers vol 2 on vinyl. He has also said that he’ll have another all-new studio album ‘Global Citizen’ out in 2023.
The new Classic Pop issue says the new OMD studio album is due in the first half of the year and has the provisional title of ‘Bauhaus Staircase’. And Sparks have their new studio album out in Spring in time for the new tour (shows are in May in UK). Not expecting much new activity from Erasure this year as a duo, although I wouldn’t bet against their BMG expanded remaster series reaching 1997’s Cowboy maybe this autumn?
Howard Jones current new album “Dialogue” is very good. I have loved the last three studio albums from OMD (2.0). Glad to hear there may be a new one. Also how about a deluxe/expanded Crush though?
About Tears For Fears: Steven Wilson in a recent interview hinted at the fact that a 5.1/Atmos version of The Hurting might be in the plans. Also, as far as I know, the superdeluxe of Elemental should be released this year for the 30th anniversary.
I wrote the sleeve notes for a 2CD deluxe of Elemental that never came out! :)
Well that is disappointing.
Elemental is probably my mot played TFF album (I alternate between this and SFTBC as my favourite).
There were some really great B-Sides released at the time too.
I hope this release finally sees the light now that the Tipping Point promotion is largely over.
I think it will happen, but it’s just a question when.
Also more or less confirmed :
Neil Young – Archives Vol.3 (1976–198?), 13 cd’s plus (maybe?) a blu-ray
Little Feat – Sailin’ Shoes 50th Anniversary box set
Elton John – Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player box set (this is the one which is mentioned by record company people, not Goodbye Yellow Brick Road)
If Sir Elt is continuing his deluxe boxes I do hope he sticks to the Madman format.
When I contacted them directly in 2021 why there was no 4Oth anniversary release for “Dare” the League replied ‘because of covid’
A box set would be brilliant, with demos,b sides, the Loving and Dancing album…still one of the greatest albums ever.
I would love that!
In a post on FB last year, they responded that everything has been released so there’s no point, ignoring the demos that are out on YouTube and pirate CD, any possible live recordings if they exist, and a multi-channel mix. Instead all that was done was a Purple Disco Machine remix of DYWM. A paltry release to commemorate the 40th anniversary of this iconic album.
a true SDE for Dare would be great fun…
I’d buy the above if it ever came out.
I’m involved in a few things that will be released this year: Horslips’ ‘More Than You Can Chew’ 33CD/2DVD (Madfish), out in a couple of weeks, with superb books by Mark Cunningham and mastering from Cormac O’Kane; Lindisfarne ‘Live at the BBC 1971-90’ (Repertoire), another excellent booklet from 70s ‘Melody Maker’ ‘Farne champion Chris Charlesworth, mastering by Martin Stansbury, out probably around late Feb/March; ‘Martin Carthy at the BBC 1966-2020’, 20CD (Madfish) with books, ephemera, etc. – likely out in autumn; a definitive collection of Duffy Power’s 1972-73 sessions for producer Adrian Millar will appear on Talking Elephant (1CD or 2CD TBC) in the first half of the year, including some unreleased (mastering by Cormac O’Kane, booklet by me)… Cherry Red have, on paper, a second volume of Pentangle reunion material (1982 + 2007-11, much unreleased) that I prepared last year – I imagine that might happen. And my own periodic studio band the Legends of Tomorrow – a sort of sprawling supergroup of Northern Irish rock, folk, blues, jazz and trad musicians/singers – have a 25-year anthology ‘The Weather at World’s End: 1997-2022’ out in March via Talking Elephant.
If you’re interested in having a Q&A with the Horslips box mastering maestro Cormac O’Kane for SDE, Paul, just ask – I have one more or less prepared.
The Martin Carthy box set is the most exciting release’s I have seen in a long time. I absolutely cannot wait for that one.
I’m excited too! In the meantime, here is an hour of Martin & Eliza broadcast on Radio 3 on 31/12/22 – ‘At Home With the Carthys’: https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m001ghhk
I guess the final Bowie box from Heathen to Blackstar will probably be released towards the end of 2023. If only they would release the exclusive Recall LPs separately. Maybe the Ziggy 50 revisit will coincide with a Ken Scott 2003 mix release on vinyl. I have it on DVD from the 40th anniversary.
Assuming 3 of the 4 albums would be doubles, plus A Reality Tour, that’s 10 pieces of vinyl right there, plus Recall 5, maybe 2 more? I guess that would make for a full box set. I would like to see that just to finish up my Bowie boxes!
I think Heathen and Reality have only ever been single LPs? But they could put Lazarus in there I suppose.
A few others to add:
Jethro Tull – A (delayed) 40th anniversary edition of “Broadsword and the Beast” is due out this year featuring remixes from Steven Wilson.
Ultravox – I’m hoping for a deluxe box set of their 1982 album “Quartet” following on from the sets for “Rage in Eden” and “Vienna.”
Tears for Fears – The obvious release this year is a 30th anniversary box set for “Elemental”, complete with Steven Wilson 5.1 & Dolby Atmos Mixes of course
Gentle Giant – Steven Wilson has also been working on remixes for the Gentle Giant albums “Interview” and “The Missing Piece”. I hope at least the former is released in 2023, but I will take both!
Frank Zappa – after last year’s amazing Waka/Wazoo set, expectations are high for a set centered around “Over-nite sensation”, maybe paired with “Apostrophe” too
Marillion – The band are set to conclude their series of deluxe editions of their EMI albums this year with a deluxe edition of “Seasons End”.
RUSH – A (delayed) 40th anniversary box set of “Signals” is expected this year, probably with a new Dolby Atmos mix of the album.
REM – Their 25th anniversary reissue series should continue this year with a 25th anniversary edition of the 1998 album “UP”
Some on YouTube have speculated that Jethro Tull will re-issue the “Passion Play” SDE book/cd package for the “benefit” of those who missed it ten years ago. That’s would be tasty!
I’d be happy with them re-issuing those excellent box-sets – they deserve to reach a wider audience.
We can be sure the Zappa estate will have *plenty* for us. They’ve been firing out product at possibly too fast a clip for a few years now.
Though i must say that i prefer that approach over Kate Bush’s…
Waka/Wazoo was really well done. Small clamshell with a booklet and consistently excellent recordings.
…but the price!!!
I feel that I’m repeating my wish list from last year. Not just Who’s Next SDE but also Jethro Tull’s Broadsword & The Beast. (Surely Tull set the benchmark for how an SDE should be produced and costed!). I am beginning to give up any hope of seeing a Traffic box set of complete albums and rarities like Island have done in the past for Sandy Denny, John Martyn and others. And still waiting for a box set of Deep Purple Made In Europe.
And then there are:
SDE’s of Going For The One/Tormato/Drams/90125 by Yes,
SDE of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway by Genesis. There was a rumour not so long ago of a 5 disc Genesis at the BBC, what happened to that?
Bruce Springsteen Nebraska/ Born In The USA box set
Hopefully Neil Young will get round to releasing the full CSNY Fillmore concerts as well as Archives III,
The delayed Horslips box set More than You Can Chew looks interesting (c 35 discs?)
In the final analysis the record companies will release what they think is profitable and not necessarily what the fans what to see. Doesn’t stop us dreaming though, does it?
Steve has blocked Island from releasing a large Island Years box like the others you referred to.Royalties dispute apparently.
Springsteen said in a recent interview that there will never be a Born In The USA box.He said a Nebraska box is close to completion.Next archival release of his is a Tracks2 type set with 5 unreleased post 1990 albums.
Regarding Neil Young Archives 3 is coming this year.Other archival releases scheduled are Early Daze, the Rainbow and Ducks Official Bootleg Series titles,Ragged Glory 2 and possibly Chrome Dreams. That CSNY Fillmore set is pretty much completed and somewhere in the queue but not due in 2023.
Adding to the Steven Wilson 2023 list is live album from the Amsterdam show of the recent Porcupine Tree tour.Expect it at the end of the year.
I’d be surprised if Genesis released a Lamb box in 2023 given that the 50th is in 2024.
Would be curious to know though what might constitute a 5CD BBC set. I have an ‘unofficial’ set of all the surviving BBC sessions but it only runs to 2CDs.
Unless the remaining discs are Live in Concert recordings? But then it could comfortably run to 7 or 8 discs at least…..
Isn`t Neil Young also supposed to release a SDE of Mirrorball including a concert movie in 2023?
That one has been rumoured for years – at least the video. Would love to see that Dublin 1995 gig one! Maybe he’ll wait 2 more years for it’s 30th anniversary.
I confidently predict that Paul McCartney will confound/disappoint/outrage SDE readers more than he pleases them. He seems to be the lightning rod for many people’s (‘too many people’) ongoing, life frustrations.
One minor aside… still waiting for the Genesis at the BBC 5CD/3LP release which was touted for December but didn’t appear.
I wish genesis would re-issue the box’s they did with the surround sound mixes in, I only managed to get the red box USA one(1983-1998) before the prices went crazy, have to keep my region free blu ray player to listen to it.
Would love the 1907’s ones
Speaking of Genesis and 40th anniversaries…
I don’t mind if Martin Fry keeps going on about the Lexicon of Love SDE if, as the link suggests, we are actually getting a physical release of the Atmos mix.
Roxy Music’s FB page just posted that 50 years ago today, they entered the studio to start working on For Your Pleasure. Hope that is a hint of things to come!!!!
Yet again hoping for something on the Siouxsie and the Banshees front. If nothing more than the long, long rumoured Ever After collection complete with the promo videos. Hopefully since we got the All Souls comp this past fall and her return to the stage in July, something will happen!!! One can hope!!
Another album hitting the 50th mark this year is Queen’s debut. Would be nice if they did something with it, but doubt it.
I wish SATB would do something except coloured vinyl! What would be perfect would be a complete As and Bs collection – the shelved Ever After collection and a reissue of Downside Up in one go – 6CDs, a DVD/Blu-ray of the videos, pop it all in a box. That would fly out, I reckon.
The series feels like it’s flying under the radar, even though it’s apparently selling quite well, so I’ll note here that the U.S.-centric Olivia Newton-John reissue campaign is continuing in 2023, with a 2 LP/1 CD edition of Greatest Hits Vol. 2 arriving on January 6. It’s the fourth entry in the series and serves as a slightly delayed 40th Anniversary edition of the hits collection, featuring four additional tracks from the international edition of the album.
Last year, we received an (also slightly delayed) 50th Anniversary Edition of her debut album If Not For You, which featured extensive bonus content, and the 45th Anniversary Edition of Olivia Newton John’s Greatest Hits, which included eight additional tracks from international editions of the collection. The series began in 2021 with the 40th Anniversary Edition of Physical, which included over a dozen bonus tracks and a DVD.
Reportedly, the next reissue will be a new duets compilation that includes at least two new tracks: a duet on “Put Your Head On My Shoulder” with Paul Anka, which was released as a single before the project was delayed, likely due to her declining health; and the last thing she recorded, a duet with Dolly Parton on “Jolene,” which was a hit for Olivia in Japan and Australia back in the seventies.
Four albums have anniversaries in 2022, so if they keep with the spirit of the series so far, we could see any or all of the following, in order of likelihood:
Let Me Be There (50th Anniversary Edition)
A reissue of her first country album for MCA, which was technically a compilation of tracks from her first three international albums (If Not For You, Olivia, and Let Me Be There AUS/Music Makes My Day UK.) Likely bonus material: the missing tracks from Olivia and LMBT/MMMD that weren’t included on the U.S. LMBT or the 1974 US compilation If You Love Me, Let Me Know , as well as some assorted non LP b-sides from 1972-1973.
Totally Hot (45th Anniversary Edition)
This was her post-Grease studio album that remains her only platinum studio set in America besides Physical. Tons of potential bonus material here: tracks from Grease and Xanadu; her hit duets with Andy Gibb; single and dance mixes of singles from TH and both movies; and her 1978 tv special Olivia, featuring ABBA and Andy Gibb, which has only received a laserdisc release to date.
The Rumour (35th Anniversary Edition)
This one seems far less likely, but if they go for it, bonus material could include: b-side “Winter Angel” and Australia-only LP track “It’s Always Australia For Me”; hit AC duet with David Foster, “The Best of Me;” unreleased tracks from her Olivia Down Under HBO special, “Old Fashioned Man” and “Click Go the Shears;” single and dance mixes of “The Rumour;” and the HBO special on dvd, which has previously been released on VHS and Laserdisc.
Back With a Heart (25th Anniversary Edition)
This one seems like the biggest pipe dream, but her attempted country comeback album could include a lot of bonus material, including demos, single remixes, international bonus tracks, and various duets from the era with Cliff Richard, Raybon Bros., Vince Gill, and others. Seems easier to just collect those on the Duets set, though.
Anything by Olivia would be fantastic!
We have been blessed with ONJ re-releases in the past 12 months, thought very difficult to come by any of the coloured vinyl or picture discs here in Australia. Looking forward to them continuing and the challenge of adding them to my collection.
Totally Hot should surely have a big effort put into it, being a #1 fan favourite. This was one of her (very few) releases which had massive marketing including posters, standees, scarves, picture discs of the album and “Deeper Than the Night” single along with massive airplay at the time.
Olivia’s Hollywood Nights television special from 1980 featured a stunning video of her cover of The Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin'” along with a couple of never released tracks like “Hollywood Nights”, “Heartache Tonight” & her duet with Elton John: “Candle In the Wind”, these would be an appreciated and enviable bonus. There was also a concert recorded in Japan around this time that would be great to hear a good version of.
Hi Paul,
When Peter Jackon’s Get Back -film was announced we were also promised that a restored version of the original Let it Be film would be released as well. We are still waiting for that.
Tubular Bells IV by Mike Oldfield. To be released on the 50th Anniversary of the original 25th May, 1973-2023!
I hope that the Ramons’ “End Of The Century”-Box will finally released. As far as I understand the remmixes / remasters are finished.
Rhino posted on their FB last year good things would come to those who are patient. We’re almost two years patient on this one. It’s still on my wishlist (as would the remainder of the discography given the same treatment).
For anyone like myself interested, U2 are releasing the Songs Of Surrender album to accompany Bono’s book on March 17th with a Netflix special with David Letterman that was recorded a couple of weeks ago in a pub in Dublin to go out on the same date. They also have a new album after Songs of Surrender, whether or if it’ll be out after that I don’t know but I do know Songs Of Surrender will have 40 “reworked” songs to match the chapters in the book and will be out in box set form too though exact details I wouldn’t sure about. Their War album is also 40 this year so as they have been concentrating on anniversary releases I could see those coming out for either RSD in April or on Black Friday plus Zooropa is 30 this year and whilst it has been remastered in vinyl there hasn’t been a box set for it (yet) and I’d like to see it get a box set with some of the many hard to get mixes included like Oakenfold’s mixes of Daddy’s Gonna Pay For Your Crashed Car which samples the Clash’s Magnificent 7 as I have heard it and also The Orb’s mixes of Numb amongst others. I know there are many folk who don’t like them and I may encounter that with this post but just thought I’d make mention of it for anyone like myself who is interested.
Great link here to the U2 details: https://www.u2songs.com/discography/u2_songs_of_surrender_album
Not me. I’ve re-discovered U2 a bit in the last year or so. I was thinking this year would be interesting to see what War related stuff would come out. Possibly the usual RSD 12″ releases. But the other stuff you mention sounds interesting too.
I would LOVE a Zooropa SDE as that was the last album of theirs I fully adored (have enjoyed quite a few tracks since then, but that was the last of their albums to really “ping” my soul). I know they kind of piggy-backed it onto their Acting Baby SDE, but would be great if it had it’s own.
Nice, comprehensive summary! Definitely coming this year are Soft Cell expanded reissues of their three 80’s albums. This has been confirmed many times by their active social media manager. There have been murmurs that Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret will get special sonic treatment (i.e spatial audio) which would make sense as a unique selling point given the album has had a deluxe edition before plus their Keychains & Snowstorms collection also featured a lot of material from those days.
And what about albums that turn 30, 25 and 20 I wonder…. a superdeluxe of Bjork’s Debut from ’93 would be a great one. A vinyl re-issue of Pulp’s Intro record from that year is also way over-due as originals have been out of print for many years. Maybe their live reunion next summer will get Universal to piggy-back some archive releases. Their last album, We Love Life, has a wealth of unreleased material from the sessions they did before settling on Scott Walker as producer.
Fatboy Slim/Massive Attack/Neutral Milk Hotel all had landmark albums released in 1998 and I’m not sure if any of them have got the special reissue treatment up to now? Ditto Boards Of Canada and Belle & Sebastian’s most commercial (?) albums came out that year. 2003 albums that might be worth an educated guess on seeing re-assessments include Elephant by The White Stripes, Dizzee Rascal’s Boy In Da Corner debut and other debuts by The Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ (Fever To Tell) and The Darkness’ Permission To Land.
I think something from Pulp could be a good bet but can’t see an SDE from Boards of Canada being remotely likely given how they operate.
A White Stripes Elephant 20th Anniversary vinyl box set (Elephant XX) through the Third Man Records vault subscription is almost guaranteed (all other albums have had similar).
There was a Massive Attack Mezzanine 20th Anniversary version released but the vinyl box set was cancelled as they were unable to reproduce the planned heat reactive sleeve for it so they released the Mad Professor remixes as a standalone instead.
Fever To Tell had a (fairly expensive) SDE in 2017.
I was hoping for a Blunderbuss X release in 2022 through the TMR Vault subscription, maybe this year?
The remastered and expanded 30th anniversary edition of the Coverdale / Page album will be released this year.
That would be wonderful news. I’ll be in like a flash
The Pet Shop Boys Annually CD is available almost worldwide. I believe there are shipping limitations to places like Taiwan, but I am in Germany and have successfully pre-ordered without any difficulty (except for the fact that they’ve changed their fan shop and you have to create a new account). Postage and packing is extortionate, though.
They posted on twitter that it was UK only via their new Warner-powered shop.
They said: “Please note that “Annually”, the “Lost” CD and the “Annually” t-shirt are only available through the UK store.”
But you can order it from there for delivery to almost anywhere. I have an order confirmation for delivery to Berlin. €16, mind. Almost as steep as the product itself. The Brexit bonus.
Yes it is in the UK shop only but they ship to other countries. I ordered it after reading your post and they ship to NYC. Shipping cost is 22 Pounds, ugh!!
Okay, good to know. A somewhat confusing statement! Happy New Year Kauwgompie :)
