Universal Music pay tribute to the short but prolific musical life of enigmatic Glasgow blues-rocker Alex Harvey with the biggest-ever, career-spanning, cross-label collection of his work.

The Last Of The Teenage Idols is presented as a 10 x 10-inch box set with a heavy-duty slipcase. Fourteen CDs are complemented by a 60-page hardcover book featuring a new essay on Alex Harvey by Scottish scribe Tim Barr, many previously unseen personal photos, documents (such as Harvey’s appeal to be exempted from National Service on the grounds that he was a conscientious objector) and newspaper cutting supplied by his family. A total of 217 fully remastered tracks (with much of the material from the original master tapes) includes 21 that are previously unreleased, and a further 59 that are appearing officially on CD for the first time.

The music fest kicks off with the eponymous debut album of Alex Harvey And His Soul Band for the first time on CD. There are five bonus tracks on this disc – three previously unreleased songs from May 1964, plus two songs from Everything’s Alright With Iabella Bond, the live Decca album recorded at Hamburg’s Top Ten Club that same year.

Disc two delivers the first release 2nd Album, that, to Harvey’s displeasure, Polydor refused to release back in 1964. Three previously unreleased tracks from the same period are also included. The story goes that the acoustic solo long-player, The Blues, that followed, which featured Alex’s brother Les accompanying him on guitar, was something of a retaliatory strike against Polydor made mainly to fulfil his Polydor contract as quickly as possible. It sold few copies, but actually contains some delightful tracks and the original vinyl has latterly become a sought-after and expensive collectors’ item for Harvey devotees. The CD of this ‘lost album’ is bolstered here by two bonus tracks – the A- and B-side of his first single for the Fontana: a cover of Northern Soul classic Agent Double-O-Soul and his Harvey’s own Go Away Baby.

The fourth disc showcases Harvey’s second album Roman Wall Blues (1969), plus Fontana and Decca singles and a rare early demo of Harp which would later become a favourite of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band (or SAHB for short).

After sampling the varied flavours of Hair Rave Up (an offshoot from Harvey’s job as a member of the pit band on London musical Hair), Rock Workshop (Harvey’s work with the 13-piece band he formed with Ray Russell in 1970) and his 1972 solo album The Joker Is Wild on disc five, the SAHB years are covered on discs six to thirteen.

The Sensationals’ 1973 debut long-player Framed is supplemented by a final version of the aforementioned Harp and five Radio 1 In Concert live recordings from November 1971.

Each of the subsequent discs featuring SAHB albums are augmented with bonus live recordings, notably of their British Top 40 hits, Delilah on Old Grey Whistle Test in 1975 (disc ten) and Boston Tea Party on Top Of The Pops in 1976 (disc 12), introduced by none other than poptabulous DJ Noel ‘Tidy-Beard-Multicoloured-Swap-Shop-House-Party-Deal-Or-No-Deal’ Edmonds

Also look out for a rare 24-minute spoken word piece from Alex, from the extravagantly named promo-only album Alex Harvey Talks About Everything: An In Depth Session With Alex Harvey Of The Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

Disc thirteen features Rock Drill (1977), SAHB’s last album, and is expanded to include two extra tracks by the band, including rarity No Complaints Department, which was omitted from the original album at the last minute. To segue into Harvey’s post-SAHB career, three songs with his next band Quad, performed for Alan ‘Fluff’ Freeman’s Radio 1 Show in March 1978.

This comprehensive collection is completed with selected tracks from Harvey’s three post-SAHB albums, plus a sprinkling of non-album tracks ending with previously unreleased home demo of Billy Bolero.

Alex Harvey died in February 1982, after suffering two heart attacks on his way back from a gig in Belgium. He was just a day short of his 47th birthday, but as this extensive and lovingly packaged collection attests, his had been a richly productive musical life.

The Last of the Teenage Idols is released on 18 March.

Ah! I didn’t see Soul in Chains on Disc 9…… That looks like a full length version as I think Delilah b side was about 4 mins (?) …… That’s good enough for me. I’ll order this then.

Back in 1969 the musical Hair was running at London’s Shaftesbury Theatre. After the final curtain each night the audience were then treated to a performance from the pit band in a type of ‘anything goes’ scenario. Or rave up, if you prefer.

Alex Harvey was a member of house band and this outstanding LP, produced by Cyril Stapleton, manages to capture the after-party mood as a memorable and energetic jamboree.

Just two numbers from Hair are included – after all, the punters had been listening to them all evening so it was time for some other swinging treats. The album opens with a raucous version of the title track – one of the best I’ve heard – with Alex in fine vocal form. An extended workout of that old r’n’b chestnut El Pussy follows with a groovy Royal International Love-In up next. The latter is a joint Harvey and Steve Stevenson number and is a sweaty piece of beat-driven rhythm. Another Harvey track comes next; the hip’n’shakin’ Bond Street Baby. The first half concludes with the feedback squall of Hare Krishna. Wicked!

More goodies on the flip – an energetic and driving All Along The Watchtower segues nicely into the Fab Four’s Birthday. Sandwiched between this pair is a lighter Harvey track called Candy. The menacing mod sound of I Know Where You Are brings the curtain down in fine style.

hi paul. seen these guy s twice stoke /charlton 74/76 ? and a good few times locally in gigs around stoke . without alex . always entertainers never lacking . strange but some how they always sounded more energetic on their live albums ie live at the beeb cd incredible sonics . than in the studio ? just hope these reissues serve them well . great news thanks

SAHB were the first band I saw live (Trentham Gardens, 16/5/76) and followed him/them avidly until they were no more……
I’ve never been sufficiently tempted by the sixties material to investigate it – mainly due to its obscurity, and currently there is a gap in my SAHB collection in any event in the form of the Framed/Next double set ….so who knows? I may be tempted by this. How come Disc 10 doesn’t include the live b side to Delilah, Soul in Chains, which, so far as I know, hasn’t made it onto CD before?

I was wondering about that too. Maybe the live version from Hammersmith is the same recording? The live B-side being a “Live” outtake makes sense.

I believe a live version of Soul In Chains is on Disc 9. However, it may not be the version released as a B-Side.

Halloween night 1975 at the Uptown Theatre in Chicago. The advertisement read, ‘if this isn’t the most outrageous rock show you have ever seen then your money back!” For me Zal Cleminson was the center of attention. As Alex clearly states on the 12″ promotional album; Alex Harvey Talks About Everything, ‘I have the best guitarist in the world’. Yep, over the top, but that was Alex.
SAHB were backing up the Tubes that night in Chicago. Somebody got that line-up turned around. SAHB supporting the Tubes. Ridiculous.

A bit odd, this. Pleased as I am to see Alex Harvey finally being accorded a deluxe edition, it’s a pity that such a large box set can’t accommodate the full “Mafia Stole My Guitar” or “Soldier on The Wall” albums. I already have both (vinyl and CD respectively) and while they’re not his best work, their partial omission will irk completists.

By the way, some of those “First Official Release on CD” tracks have already been released on Universal Music’s “Considering the Situation” double CD. Or wasn’t that official?

… Having said that, it’s good that Universal has licensed at least the best of the “other label” material for inclusion here. It’s preferable to ignoring it completely.

The unreleased second Soul Band lp was released on CD by Bear Family some years back, which, i think, has a few tracks not included on the box. I agree, if you’re going to do a 14-disc box, why not make it 15 & include everything? That being said, I’m still delighted to see this and have voted with my wallet…

Yep, pre-ordered this last week, fab looking box. Until the 2 x CD sets of the SAHB some years back, Harvey’s back catalogue had been poorly served with cheapo ‘best of the SAHB’ CDs without much attention to what went on them. I had a needle drop CDR of Roman Wall Blues for years and managed to bag a copy of the ‘Sunday Song’ / ‘Horizons’ Decca 45 (actually Giant Moth, a Glasgow band Harvey fronted in 1967 but which Decca would not credit as they thought Harvey’s name would sell more copies – it didn’t!) on eBay for £30 some years back. the ‘Midnight Moses’ 45 was reissued for Record Store Day last year I think. I saw SAHB at the Reading Festival in I think 1977. They had the ‘brick wall’ banner back drop with ‘Vambo Rules’ graffitied on it, they were great live.

I also seem to recall that the ‘Soul Band’ Harvey used on at least one of those two Polydore LPs was actually ‘The Four Just Men / Just Four Men’ Merseybeat group (later to become Brit psych wonders Wimple Winch) who happened to be playing in Germany where Harvey was at the time, though I may be wrong on that.

Hats off to whoever put this all together, cross label licensing etc. It looks great and must be the career anthology Harvey has always deserved, saved from the baragain bins and elevated to where he belongs in a super deluxe box set!

Thanks Paul – This picked up my spirits a bit on such a dark day – saw SAHB at the Rainbow and then again when the Who were putting the boot in at Charlton and I was down the front in the rain of rain and flying bottles.

There was nothing like “Anthem” live….this set will require some “comparing” to other recordings (Cleveland)

I agree that Anthem live was truly awesome (even better than Framed when Alex played Adolph) and a terrible shame that a live version couldn’t be found for this box, especially as there wasn’t one on the BBC set.
