artifact

Cherry Red will issue Artifact: The Dawn of Creation Records 1983-1985 in September, a new five-CD box set that charts the early years of the legendary UK independent record label.

The 124-track ‘various artists’ collection includes songs by bands such as The Jesus and Mary Chain, Primal Scream, The Jasmine Minks, and The X-Men and comprises two discs of early A and B-sides, a third CD of rarities and album tracks, a further disc of previously unissued demos and finally a fifth CD of rare BBC sessions.

Artifact is packaged as a ‘bookset’ with a 12,000-word essay from Neil Taylor, rare photos and personal reminiscences.

Artifact: The Dawn of Creation Records 1983-1985 will be released on 25 September 2015.

Saad

This is before they blotted their copybook with derivative unoriginal bands and put a nail in the coffin with Emperors New Clothes bombast of Oasis and Cool Brittania with Tony Blair!

Padraig

Yes you can…MVB, Ride and Slowdive make a compelling case.

Diable

Can I argue ’89 – ’92?

Gary

I wonder if Cherry Red will ever turn their attention to Sarah Records?

Albais

Totally agree with Gary, saw part of the documentary about the label and they we’re some very intersting artists to discover like The Waken.

So let’s hope so…

Charles Hodgson

Disagree – this WAS the best era for the label IMO. Before the term / scene known as C86 was coined. WELL before the dreaded Oasis / Boo Radleys era.
Bodines radio session and Meat Whiplash radio session and demos / rarities look particularly interesting. The Loft and Jasmine Minks were no slouches either.

Paul English

Think the 1986 – 1989 era was best.

Paul English

The singles were compiled on the five CD Creation Soup in 1991. The vinyl versions of these sounded quite poor.

It’s a nice -looking package but not the best period for the label.
