Blur / new album The Magic Whip

I came across the vinyl yesterday, and at $70 Australian dollars…. not a chance in Hades. I don’t care what colour it is.

It’s a Fopp/HMV exclusive (on red one-sided vinyl) and limited to 3,000 copies. HMV have said that it’ll sell out today and they won’t be getting any more in stock.

Y’All Doomed is a bonus track on the Japanese issue of the album. Definitely a different beast to the rest of the album (which is excellent).

There’s a limited edition 7″ in HMV available, £4.99 but you get the CD of the album for £7.99 if you buy it. One track (instrumental) called Y’all Doomed. There was a “one copy per customer” sticker on it, so I presume it’s an HMV exclusive.

Got it this morning and the vinyl is a really nice package, in keeping with the album reissues, gatefold, decent inlays, poster/booklet thing.

I really hope this is good. Not going to listen (anywhere) until the lp arrives

I like the track here. A cross between Gorillaz and Think Tank era Blur. That said, would this album be coming out if the last Gorillaz album and even more so, the Damon solo album, not (think) tanked!

A world with Blur in it, making new music is a better world. Hard to believe Leisure is over 25 years old! They’ve been one of my favorite bands since I first heard “There’s No Other Way.” Who cares if “Go Out” sounds like a Parklife b-side? Blur sounds like Blur, and no other band can take that away. The best musicians are the ones who make music that they want to make, and not try to cater to those who care if it will be a “hit”.
I welcome THE MAGIC WHIP. I can’t wait.

I would rather see a new Bowie tour than a new Bowie album anyday

Well to paraphrase something a critic once wrote, possibly about either Bowie’s Low or one of Eno’s 70’s ambient albums:
“One man’s noise is another man’s nirvana” :-)

I think the original quote may have been from Lester Bangs and was something like:
“One man’s nirvana is another man’s nap”.

Seriously though – I can’t say that the time it takes to make a video should be a judge of its quality or merit – otherwise Wild Boys by Duran Duran, which took ages and cost loads, should be one of the greatest videos ever made – and it really isn’t!

However if you mean that this particular video does not bear repeated viewing then I can’t disagree (whether it took 5 minutes or 5 days).

I read an interview a while ago with William Orbit, he was really peed off because he had done a whole load of work for a new Blur album. In the end Damon decided to scrap it and William says he was never paid.

Since I am in the U.S. and cannot use the tickets or pre-sale access to the Hyde Park show, do you know of any pre-order bonuses through any online shop that is different than the Warners album art litho print? I hate pre-ordering and then having to cancel because there was a better pre-order elsewhere… Thanks.

albarn may be a very quick worker and it shows.
The new song is not even a song, it’s just some disarticulated noise.
And it must have taken them no more than 5 minutes to make the video.

I’m a huge Blur fan but if ‘Go Out’ is indicative of the rest of the album I’ll pass. Bloody awful.

Superdeluxe/bonus track-wise, I doubt there will be much if anything besides the 12 album tracks. Sounds like its a bit of a cut and paste job by Coxon and Street from restricted recording time. Not saying that doesn’t bode well for the album, Albarn is an incredibly prolific and quick worker and their last track, The Puritan, was ace, but I can’t imagine they spent enough time on this project to leave a generous helping of demos and potential b-sides lying around.

I thought the Lloyd Cole and the Commotions boxed set was going to be the highlight of this year for me but this tops that!

What next… a new Bowie album…?

I was only saying last night that I would love to see a new Blur album being released, but that it probably would never happen. Then this is announced today. I feel that I am responsible somehow!!!!
