Bob Dylan’s ‘Time Out Of Mind’ is the next release in the SDE Surround Series

Exclusive Blu-ray Audio features Dolby Atmos Mix

SDE-exclusive Blu-ray Audio with Dolby Atmos Mix (quick buy link)

In collaboration with Sony Music, SDE is pleased to announce an exclusive physical release of the Dolby Atmos Mix of Bob Dylan’s acclaimed 1997 album Time Out Of Mind.

Dylan’s “mid-career masterpiece” turned 25 last year and amongst its 11 tracks are songs like ‘Love Sick’, ‘Cold Irons Bound’, ‘Can’t Wait’, ‘Not Dark Yet’ which became concert staples and fan favourites. One composition, ‘Make You Feel My Love’, found a place in the Great American Songbook, having been covered by artists such as Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, Neil Diamond, and Adele. Time Out Of Mind won three Grammys in 1998 including the coveted Album of the Year award. The Irish Times even ranked the album as Dylan’s best, in 2021!

Time Out Of Mind has recently been remixed and reissued on CD and vinyl as Fragments: Time Out Of Mind Sessions (1996-1997), Vol. 17 in Dylan’s long-running Bootleg Series. All formats feature the 2022 Remix of Time Out Of Mind by Michael Brauer, whose work on the Dylan catalog goes back two decades. The remix offers somewhat cleaner Dylan vocals (original producer Daniel Lanois had layered various effects on them), while still staying true to the signature sound of Time Out of Mind.

With Fernando Reyes, Brauer also created the Dolby Atmos Mix of the 2022 Remix – the first ever Atmos Mix for Dylan – for a full spatial audio immersive experience. Until now, has only been available on streaming. That changes in April with the release of this special limited edition Blu-ray audio version of Time Out Of Mind which is an SDE global exclusive and is therefore only available via theSDEshop.

Two audio streams will be available on this disc:

  • Time Out Of Mind (2022 Remix) – Dolby Atmos mix
  • Time Out Of Mind (2022 Remix) – 96/24 hi-res stereo
The 2022 Remix version of Not Dark Yet (stereo version)

This Bob Dylan Blu-ray Audio (another first) is #8 in the ongoing SDE Surround Series and will be packaged similarly to previous editions and ships with a free, collectible SDE Surround Series slipcase.

Here’s the now traditional reminder as to why this product is highly recommended:

  • It’s the only way to enjoy the Dolby Atmos mix of the album via a physical product
  • You don’t need to sign-up to a streaming service such as Tidal or Apple Music to hear the spatial audio mix
  • The Atmos Mix on the Blu-ray is not compressed due to streaming bandwidth restrictions
  • You own the product, you are not renting it from a digital service provider
  • The Blu-ray audio is an excellent format for music and you don’t want to see it die off
  • Supporting SDE with these initiatives leads to similar collaborations with labels/artists and we are keen to bring your more in the near future!

Be aware, this is a limited edition product. It will be available for 14 days only. The pre-order opportunity will close on 24 February. Do not miss out on this spatial audio mix of this classic album and secure your pre-order now by ordering at theSDEshop, either directly via this link or using the special SDE shop buy button (‘add to cart’) below. We ship worldwide (the tracked service to USA is £8, for example).

The Time Out Of Mind (2022 Remix) SDE-exclusive Blu-ray Audio will be released on 12 May 2023 (was 28 April) and is a collaboration between SDE and Sony Music.

TECHNICAL NOTES: This blu-ray audio requires a blu-ray player. Decoding the Dolby Atmos mix requires a Dolby Atmos-certified soundbar or a Dolby Atmos-compatible AV Receiver/Amp. The Dolby Atmos mix will ‘fold down’ to 5.1 or stereo if a Dolby Atmos decoder is not detected.
EU SHIPPING NOTES: If you are ordering from the EU please be aware that that goods may be subject to import VAT when they arrive from the UK. The prices the SDE shop charge you do not include VAT

  1. I Broke down and ordered today, missed out on couple of titles – so collection will not be complete. Had originally skipped due to lack of interest in the artists, now regret.

Titles / artists I would love to see in this series: Art In America (S/T), Klaatu (all their albums but especially 3:47 EST and Hope), Strange Advance – World’s Away; Saga (most of their early catalog), Kansas (most of early catalog). I could go on with my wish list, as love this format.

  2. Hi Paul,
Congratulations for this «coup», as many others have said. That sure will be a hard act to follow. ( Imperial Bedroom would be my personal choice, but that’s just daydreaming I guess…) I don’t even have the equipment to play the damn thing, but I love Fragments so much that I couldn’t resist, like if the box set would have seem incomplete without your BR. And maybe it will force me to stop procrastinating and to invest in a proper set-up. Well, anyway, thank you for your hard work.

  3. Congrats Paul! Dylan is quite the score! ENO, TFF & Propaganda sound incredible! Anxiously awaiting the arrival of orbital, ten years after, George & Bob. I’ll be making a special SDE shelf section in my music room this week as I will have 8 of the 9!!

  4. Hi. I’m a bit of a pleb when it comes to this format. I have a Marantz amp connected to a CD player, turntable etc. I do own a blu ray player and have checked and it has no digital audio output just a coaxial output so would I need to get a new blu ray player with a digital audio output and then connect this to my amps digital audio input in order to get the benefit of this format?

          1. Dylan68 –
Please let me know the make of your blu ray player – I just want to check if the coax is for video or audio

          2. The coax out on your Blu Ray player will down sample hi res audio to 48/16 (owing to copyright protocol). This is still better than CD quality – but not classified as hi res.
The only way to enjoy 192/24 or 96/24 hi res is through HDMI as Paul mentioned, but your Marantz amp has no HDMI input I’m afraid.
My advice is to buy the disc whilst its still available (as you appear to be a Dylan fan) and look to getting a ‘receiver’ amp when you decide to upgrade.

I would still like to know which Blu Ray player you have never the less – just to confirm my answer.
            Best
            Bunn

          3. Thanks for your help with this Bunn. I would also point out that it is very easy and cheap to upgrade your receiver/amp via ebay or similar because people are always upgrading and selling their old models.

          4. Ok many thanks both: I also have a Sonos Beam 2 sound bar which is connected to the tv via HDMI. Would this play the disc in hi-res?

          5. So far there is no way for you get above 16/48
            My advice is this.
Your amp has a great reputation. Smoothing is one of 6006’s accolades
Whatever res you end up with is going to sound better than most people hear anyways – particularly on those peach sounding speakers. Its gonna sound analogue.
            Im almost jealous.
Should you buy it? Yes. Its gonna be awesome however you do it – Maratnz 6006 natively supports 96/24 for future

          6. My advice for anyone looking to invest in a new receiver is to wait for the time being since it looks like a new range of receivers will be on the market this year.
I bought a Sony receiver a couple of years ago which could handle Dolby Atmos but then Sony decided to create their 360 spatial which it can’t handle.
In March, Sony is releasing a new range of receivers that can handle both Dolby Atmos and 360 spatial. I expect other companies will follow this year and hopefully, will bring the price down.

  5. Concert for George was a big one, but this is one step higher.
Now, maybe you could team up with Peter Gabriel (who seems to have rediscovered music in surround recently) and create the first ever Super Deluxe Edition’s boxset made of all his album in surround?
Don’t stop at the top as the saying goes..

  6. OK – I’m a vinyl afficionado and therefore a complete novice on this format. I’ve got a Blu-Ray player and a 5.1 system via a Denon amp. Is this the right set up to get the most out of this Dolby Atmos release?

  7. Congrats Paul – an amazing achievement. You have single handedly resurrected this format back from the dead with exclusive and imaginative content. No brainer buy (as all in this series). Many thanks for making collecting fun. Now you are like Pink Floyd after they released Dark Side of the Moon – how can you follow this ? I hope it will be Revolver but that is the holy grail of surround !

      1. I’m not sure if there will ever be another rerelease of Pink Floyd material that Roger Waters has written after the latest exchange of nice words between Polly Sampson and him.

        1. Samson, not Sampson.

And according to rontoon, several further projects are in the pipeline. Assuming they already signed off on those, I don’t assume they’re going to get stopped. But they probably won’t be any more interesting than the embarrassing DSOTM reissue either.

  8. Incredible accomplishment getting an artist of this stature – instant order! I’ll second (or third or whatever) that my fingers are crossed you could do navigate doing a physical release of the Atmos mix for Revolver.

  9. Congratulations Paul on getting this release from an artist with the stature of Bob Dylan! Ordered my copy today. Time Out of Mind was released when I was 26, and it was the first album I bought from Dylan and it then led me to explore his different periods.

      1. I eventually collected all of Dylan’s albums, but his best period is in my opinion is 1965-1966, which I know is a rather very common opinion to have. Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited, and Blonde On Blonde. All of his 1960’s output is essential. One of my personal favorites, however, is ‘Love and Theft’ from 2001.

  10. This is honestly such a simple idea – advertise a pre-order window for a remixed classic album, and just press as many as you receive payment for – that it’s amazing that the labels haven’t cottoned on and done it themselves. It seems like such an easy way to monetise something that they’ve already spent the money to create – so long as the QUALITY CONTROL is there….

Which tbh is probably one of the main reasons as to why they’ve partnered with SDE, becuase they’re confident the releases will be DONE RIGHT.

    Kudos to Paul :)

  11. Haven’t made a Blu-Ray suggestion before and I don’t think these exist anywhere but I would love to hear something from a mid or early era ELO revamped for a series like this. Eldorado, Face the Music, A New World Record and the Tour de Force that is Out of the Blue.

    1. I mentioned Out Of The Blue as an option some way down this thread a few days ago, alongside some other suggestions. Having been a fan of the Electric Light Orchestra since hearing Showdown as a child, I am always a bit mystified why someone with the musical genius of Jeff Lynne hasn’t got more involved with superior sounding releases. I have copies of all the vinyl variants on the highest grade which sound superb but a Blu-ray version of each would be worth hearing. I would personally put Discovery and Time in the pot also.

      1. Agreed, Discovery would certainly be a great album to do. I don’t know why, because it is a real change from the brilliant “method” Jeff had developed, but Discovery resonates with me. As a Brit I keep forgetting that Don’t Bring Me Down was a US number 1.

        1. What is incredible is that Face The Music didn’t even chart in the UK. Made the top 10 of the US Billboard top 200. To be honest, don’t get me started – they have always been my favourite band, ahead of a huge variety of others. Marvellous stuff !

      2. You can get 192/24 and 96/24 downloads of the ELO catalogue from Qobuz. That’s blu-ray quality though only stereo. Still they sound superb.

I would love to hear any ELO in surround but my preference would be the earlier material up to Out of the Blue. Discovery was a huge step into a more commercial sound and the success of Don’t Bring Me Down in the USA cemented the commercial element in the ELO sound. My least favourite tracks are his rockabilly efforts, Rock and Roll is King, Four Little Diamonds. Then there is Hello My Old Friend which is glorious.

  12. Wow! What a scoop!

Congratulations on such a timely and important release. Have been listening to the wonderful Fragments SDE since it arrived and this is a superb dessert.

    Keep up the good work.

Maybe a cheeky email to Apple to see if you can get Revolver out there. If you can get Dylan then surely anything is possible. I know we are talking Apple here and even respected film directors struggle. But if you don’t ask…

    Many thanks again.

  13. I keep hoping for a Grace Jones release in this series. “Slave to the rhythm” in a Dolby Atmos mix would be my ultimate dream release although ‘Hurricane’ and ‘Hurricane dub’ would sound brilliant in surround as well but my guess is that the “Slave to the rhythm” album would be the highest in demand.

I also have the “Hard on – Greatest hits” SACD of Frankie Goes to Hollywood but I’d buy a blu-ray audio re-issue immediately !

    1. Frankie’s debut in glorious 5.1 would do for me. Get Trevor Horn onto it. He’ll probably produce half-a-dozen different mixes! He could do 90125 and The Buggles debut while’s he’s at it…..

  14. OMG I am speechless Paul! Short of giving us a Beatles “Revolver” Blu Ray you have reached the peak of rock ‘n’ roll royalty in just 8 releases! Total respect to you for going from a website for music collecting geeks like me to visit every day (I do) to a label of such distinction, quality and range. I couldn’t hit the “quick buy link” fast enough. I do hope this opens the door to a few more future releases from similarly important artists. Just wow! :-)

  15. I spent the last year or so watching enviously as fans of other artists were treated to these blu-ray audio releases; it was great to see the physical hi-res format being supported and enthusiastically embraced by fans but, unfortunately for me, there was no release that had me reaching for the ‘buy’ button (for no other reason than none of my favourite artists had featured so far).

    Until yesterday…

When release #8 was trailed earlier in the week I would never have guessed that it would be Dylan or T.O.O.M. I’d been happily working my way through the Fragments box since release and really enjoying it, satisfied that this was a well curated thorough collection and at no point did I think that ‘something may be missing that may improve the box’, however this BR release is the cherry on top of Fragments. Huge kudos to SDE for not only securing a Dylan exclusive, but having a release that strikes while the iron is hot with respect to the recent Fragments release. Can’t wait to get this.

  16. Hi Paul. Not sure if it’s a problem on your end, but I’m having problems completing the order. The site will not allow me to the final review page; it gets stuck when calculating the shipping and keeps asking me to try again in a few minutes. Thanks for any help.

      1. Paul, would you mind contacting me at the email address connected with my SDE Shop account? My last attempt finally went through, but my credit card company just informed one of my earlier efforts also just popped up as pending. I don’t want to appear as if I’m a hoarder. Thanks for your troubles!

  17. Congrats Paul . This is only fantastic.
Perhaps Mr . Bob . will realise the significance of this occasion and give an interview to you , you know , casually like . Ordered . Thanks .

  18. Congratulations on another sensational addition to your Atmos portfolio, I have listened to the Joni Mitchell Atmos mixes on Tidal and it would be beyond mind blowing if Court & Spark could be added !!, if you can get Dylan than Joni should be a piece of cake!. Well done Paul!.

  19. Wow! Incredible! I didn’t expect this from you, Paul, a surround sound Blu-Ray of Bob Dylan, especially Time Out Of Mind that I ‘just’ have on vinyl… This LP sounds so good. I’ve got a lot of SACD from Bob Dylan bought in 2003 and all sound great. Sadly, Time Out Of Mind was not in the 15 ones that was reissued. I can’t wait to listen to Cold Irons Bound in 5.1 in all his glory. I hope that my Blu-Ray player will decode all well. Just bought it! Many thanks…

  20. Paul, I am thrilled that you brought this excellent mix which I have really enjoyed streaming this month to physical media. Time Out of Mind is one of my most loved albums from the 1990s. Another from that time which is a personal favorite of mine is Painted from Memory by Elvis Costello and the late great Burt Bacharach. Hoping that Atmos mix could see a physical release as part of the SDE Surround series later this year? :)

  21. Well done Paul what a great scoop!
Hopefully more of these big labels will support you moving forward. There is quite a number of Atmos mixes turning up on Apple Music with no physical product.
Even the forthcoming Elton John “ Honky Château” set has a great Atmos mix – online only!

    Peace and love✌

  22. Paul – I’m impressed. This is a big get. I’d love to see some of the Tom Petty Atmos mixes and the Elton John surround mixes released as part of the SDE Surround series. I suppose it’s too much to hope that the glaring omission of the Revolver Atmos mix from the Revolver SDE box can be rectified in this manner.

One request – if there are also vintage surround mixes (either quad or 5.1), please try to license those as well. You may also want to try licensing certain albums that were previously released on DTS CD, including McCartney’s Band on the Run and Venus and Mars. Even if these are vintage quad mixes rather than modern Atmos mixes, it would be great to have the opportunity to hear these mixes in the best possible sound quality.

  23. The e-mail announcing this popped up while I was driving – had to calm down and tell myself I would be able to order it once home and not miss it which proved to be the case. Safely ordered now – one for me and one for my completely Bob-headed colleague who got the 10 LP version on delivery day from bobdylan.com . He has no surround system and will now have to invest !

  24. Great news and quite an accomplishment Paul, congratulations! I just hope the mix retains Daniel Lanois’ special vibe and sound he goes after in his productions. Ordered! Now, let’s hope Revolver or The Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys comes next.

  25. Paul, you had me conditioned to the 14 day order window so I missed the order for the Ten Years After blu ray. I thought I had at the usual 10 days or two weeks (whatever it always was/is) to order and missed out on the whole thing. Why was it set up this way? First time I ever missed out on an SDE exclusive whether it was a booklet or a blu ray. I’m so disappointed!
Regardless, I learnt my lesson and immediately ordered the Bob Dylan Blu Ray. I own nothing by Bob Dylan (Hurricane is the only Dylan song I know and love) so I’m going to let myself be surprised. Thanks again for the exclusives. Love them all. Just got the shipping confirmation for Orbital. Can’t wait!! Keep ‘em coming!!

    1. You know only one song by Bob Dylan? How’s that possible if you’re at least 30? You have never heard Blowin’ In The Wind, The Times They Are A-Changin’, Subterranean Homesick Blues, Maggie’s Farm, Mr. Tambourine Man, Like A Rolling Stone, Lay Lady Lay, Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door etc.

      1. Growing up musically in the Netherlands in the 80’s and being a new wave & dance fan, Bob Dylan was just not someone you listened too. I think most of the songs you mentioned are from before that time? I know Lay Lady Lady from Duran Duran and Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door from Guns N Roses. I did hear Mr Tambourine Man. Didn’t know that was Dylan.

        1. I have never been able to get into Dylan. I just find is voice annoying and like you my musical epiphany was in the late 70 and 80s. Even though I have heard some of the songs Jarmo listed, they never make me want to explore more. And I am trying to be sensible with my choices and not buy albums just because they are in Atmos and so have now missed 4 of the 9 releases. I already have too many things I don’t listen to in my collection to keep adding more. Will save my dollars for something that does excite me. I am looking forward to the new Steven Wilson album, the PT Deadwing reissue, and the Tull Broadsword & the Beast set due later this year.

  26. Love it, love it, love it! First and foremost, congratulations on securing an artist of Bob Dylan’s stature! Immediate order!! I feel so fortunate, I found this site back in the day and check it out multiple times daily!! Cheers!!

  27. Just walked in from work and BANG Time Out Of Mind ATMOS i’ve never ordered something so fast. Your top table now Paul and you’ve earned it with such a fantastic site for all us lovers of the physical tune Well done you and may it grow and grow

  28. Hopefully if this is a success, which I have no doubt it will, Sony will hopefully have found a partner to release other streaming only surround mixes as part of the SDE series.

    Fingers crossed.

Great work behind the scenes Paul and SDE team.

  29. As the French say: Chapeau, Paul.

Hope you already secured several pairs of gloves for your daughters to prevent them from developing blisters while packaging 10.000+ items of this release…

  30. Excellent choice. Just listened to Fragments and need another listen. Love the 2nd and 3rd disc.

    Hey Paul
How about the next release in the series be Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, and Howe? Or maybe Yes – Going For The One if the masters are still around.

Oh – and will order after posting this comment.

    : )

  31. Great stuff – order placed.

I hope the mastering will preserve the dynamics of the original recording. I find Blu Ray audio releases to be a mixed bag, with some just reproducing the loud mastering of most modern CD releases.

Here’s hoping this will be a good one.

  32. Wow! Instant order.

Not only my favourite Dylan album but the first one I bought that wasn’t a greatest hits. I was in my mid-20s in 1997 and ‘Time Out Of Mind’ was an outlier for my listening tastes that year (Radiohead, The Verve, Erykah Badu, Supergrass, Finlay Quaye…) but it ended up being my gateway album into Dylan’s back catalogue.

Honestly Paul, I didn’t think I could be more excited about the Fragments bootleg than I already am, but I stand corrected!

  33. Fantastic. What with ‘Concert For George’, ‘A Space In Time’ and now this! …May I suggest Traffic’s – ‘Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys’ as a future release?

  34. Incredible work to get an artist of Dylan’s calibre onboard with SDE… amazing news, Paul. Sure, I prefer the Lanois mix and my set-up is only 5.1 rather than Atmos… but to have such a great album in surround sound is a no-brainer. ORDERED! And many congratulations on this fabulous coup!

  35. Two copies ordered. One for me (I’ve never heard the album before but the positive reviews in addition to this special release was all the incentive I needed to rectify that!) and one for a birthday gift.

Although I only have a passing interest in Dylan, this release is clearly a momentous occasion for you and this website. Congratulations, Paul.

  36. Outstanding achievement in landing Bob Dylan – well done Paul. This could be a massive seller – even with only a 14 day window. might need to be generous with a bonus for your fulfilment elves…..

  37. Just ordered this. My first ever Blu Ray Audio disc purchase. But I couldn’t resist it. Paul, maybe you’ll be able to do the full Dylan catalogue in Surround Sound? That will be one heck of a box set! Although not sure the first few solo albums would benefit greatly…

  38. Instant purchase! What perfect timing – why, just a couple of weeks ago, The Guardian had an article about “Make You Feel My Love” from Time Out Of Mind is now considered a classic in the Great American Songbook:

    https://www.theguardian.com/music/2023/jan/31/make-you-feel-my-love-bob-dylan

I’ll just add my congratulations for you being able to license from Sony’s catalogue – a real treasure trove, especially for older catalogue releases. What a coup! I have the 20-year old SACD Sony Dylan box, containing 15 classic albums, six of which have multichannel mixes. Can’t wait to hear this newly remixed version of Time Out Of Mind in spatial audio! I hope you sell truckloads!

  39. Absolutely salivating – absolutely blown away at you securing this Paul. Hopefully given this is Sony then Depeche Mode might let you release Momento Mori once physical vinyl and CDs have peaked. Such a shame they moved away from 5.1 when they left Mute for Mute / Columbia. Bring it on ….

  40. Good lord…Dylan! Whatever next …..an Atmos SDE of Hounds of Love? (Please God). Brilliant work Paul. What a result. Hope there isn’t a 1000 limit on this release, not that it’ll bother me as my order is in! Many thanks.

  41. Well done Paul, never expected to see Bob Dylan as one of your SDE surround release.

This is where things are so weird in relationship to listening to surround music in a room using a receiver and not headphones. As this is a Sony release, it’s only available on Tidal as a spatial 360 release. In order to listen to 360, you need a receiver that can decode the signal. Unfortunately, my Sony receiver, which is only a couple of years old can only handle Dolby Atmos.

The good news is Sony is bringing out a range of receivers in March that can handle both 360 and Dolby Atmos but the starting price is $900. If only someone could release a gadget that decodes the 360 signal and output via HDMI to a receiver.

    1. This isn’t to correct you but just to indicate another streaming option (at least until this exciting disc is released). There are too many personal considerations for me to call this a recommendation.

The ATMOS mix is also on Apple Music. You’d have to listen on an Apple TV 4K but you can get the 2021 model for as little as $80 or the new model for $150ish. Apple’s subscription has the benefit of being cheaper and, if you have Apple AirPods Pro or Max you can get (the not nearly ATMOS) spatial audio on an iOS device while on the go.

Yes, I understand it’s another subscription or would require migrating (and there are plenty of reasons not to), but there are third party options that can copy your library (and I believe playlists) from one service to another.

      1. Dear Mick,

i guess while cramming through all the old tapes in the attic looking for that great session at the Chelsea Hotel with The Thin White Duke that you did in early 1971 you must have missed out on the release of ‘Fugazi’ in 2021 as a 3cd/1bra SDE where a 5.1-mix for the album is included (alas only for the 2021 remix, not for the original).

Should i have misinterpreted your post and you haven’t meant the Marillion album but a full surround noise experience by the American punk rock band of the same name i can only offer you my sincerest apology.

  42. OMG! This is bucket list item for me. The only thing better would be getting a physical ATMOS release of Revolver by The Beatles! You have raised the bar very high with this release! Keep them coming! Thank you

  43. Hey Paul, great job and waiting forward to listening to it. I do have one question, I live in the States and I was wondering if there can be a way where a few of these releases can be shipped together that way cutting down on shipping costs. Thanks

  44. Having just saved $75 on the physical release of Time Out Of Mind thanks to SDE, I’m happy to pass on some of the savings. Ordered! First Concert for George and now this? Congrats! As others have said, this is a coup. Amazing job and happy to support!

  45. Testament to your continued dedication that major labels are partnering you in major releases Paul. It’s so nice to have watched this develop organically, starting with nothing else but one man’s passion for physical product.
