Bryan Adams / “Reckless” four-disc super deluxe edition box set

bryan_super2

We reported earlier this year Bryan Adams‘ classic 1984 album Reckless was to be reissued this autumn and the details have now emerged and we can now confirm that the album will be reissued across a number of formats including the pictured four-disc super deluxe edition box set.

The super deluxe set features seven previously unreleased tracks (including the song Reckless) appended to the main album on disc one, while disc two features an April 1985 BBC In Concert live recording from Hammersmith Odeon. A DVD with promo videos is included, with the icing on this super deluxe cake being the inclusion of a pure audio blu-ray audio disc which features a hi-res version of the new remastered Reckless and 5.1 mix of the entire album! A hardcover book features never-before-seen historical photos from the studio, and a conversation piece between Bryan and his co-writer Jim Vallance, a technical interview with mastering engineer Bob Ludwig and more.

The two-CD deluxe limits itself to discs one and two from the super deluxe, and if you are only interested in hi-res and 5.1 the blu-ray audio is also available separately.

A two-LP vinyl edition will include the bonus tracks and “live tracks” – suggesting most (0r all) of the Hammersmith tracks will be on the record.

Reckless will be reissued on 3 November 2014.

  1. Another excellent SDE. Blu-ray audio disc sounds fantastic!! Book is very interesting with unique perspectives on how the album was developed. It was neat to hear the actual song Reckless that the album was named after. Only disappointment was that the live CD didn’t include One Night Love Affair.

  2. Already ordered the box set, can’t wait! Getting the vinyl edition too. Wish the bonus tracks were included in the 5.1 mix but it’s a minor omission in my view.

    1. I don’t think the bonus tracks would honestly sound that great in 5.1. The bonus tracks (not the Live stuff) are unfinished demos. The only demo that sounds like a finished song is the track ‘Reckless’. It still has a rough sound to it, but still sounds better to my ears than the other bonus songs.

  3. Hi folks, latest update. I received this this morning, but am rather disappointed to find that the Blu-Ray doesn’t play on my BD-ROM Drive :( Anybody had any experience of these new fangled BD Audio discs yet?

  4. I will never forget when i first heard the single and watched the video to go with it, it still chills “Run To You” and now a 4 box set super deluxe edition to me a legendary album and the extras to boot, cannot get any better than this a few weeks before Christmas the last few weeks have been amazing for similar albums, the recent Queen box set, Tull’s
“A Passion Play” and now on the cards are Yes’s Relayer, and another pretty soon “Warchild” box set, and Pink Floyd’s “Endless Wire” better start saving

  5. The limited Japanese 2012 A&M Records/Universal Music SHM-CD remaster of ‘Reckless’ (UICY-94822) is the only remastered album release which has the ‘Diana’ and the 2 Christmas tracks, but this release is long out of print. For those who want to track down a new or used copy at any price, be aware that it doesn’t seem to be really remastered. It’s very low in volume and lacks that remastered sonic punch. Conclusion: there’s no real difference to the original CD release. And for the ‘remastered’ 3 bonus tracks: if you already have the US or Japanese 1989 ‘Run To You’ CD single (with ‘Diana’ as track 2) and if you already have the Japanese 1994 ‘Christmas Time’ CD single reissue (with ‘Reggae Christmas’ as track 2), you really don’t need this reissue either. But of course, that’s my opinion.

  6. The three songs missing Diana etc. Can be found on the japanese remaster(?) Cd from 2012 where 8 albums or so have been reissued in these small vinyl replicas.

  7. Seem to remember BA saying in an interview that there were numerous different versions of Summer of ’69 recorded before they hit on the familiar and wonderful released arrangement. Would be nice to hear some of the versions that didn’t pass muster. Never a huge fan of the song Diana but should be there given it was from these sessions and there is plenty of room. Otherwise looks good package. Love to see the same treatment for Into The Fire with official release given to the 1987 Live bootleg including the wonderful Native Son.

  8. One of my favorite guilty please albums, but can only echo it’s wrong not to include Diana – despite tragedy, this is one of the better songs from the sessions and belongs here – can hardly be considered a cash-in or in bad taste as he officially released it years before she passed and the day when anyone would assume he was capitalizing on her passing is long gone.

  9. Here’s hoping for a nice remaster job on this one.
Regarding the inclusion of single edits, i am wondering how much you could remove from those singles given their running times, and the album itself is so lean that each song seems cut for radio.
There is zero fat on those original 10 tracks too, with Somebody being the only single to stretch near 5 mins.
Those missing tracks can stay missing. Diana is a decent song and sounds like much of the album, but the others are terrible and do not sound like a part of the album. Remastering a megamix just seems like a waste of time anyway. Only a very few Christmas songs become an integral part of an artists catalogue, and these two are very forgettable. Seems like BA wants to forget too.
Completists will no doubt have all this stuff on other releases, including them here I think would spoil the overall package.

    1. Others are mentioning this Japanese reissue with the bonus tracks too but I cannot locate it on CD Japan or Discogs, the CD Japan one only lists 10 tracks but most other Japanese reissues have indeed bonus tracks.

    1. I don’t think that any edits or mixes of the singles exist. I could be wrong, however. I know that when “Run To You” was released as a single (prior to the release of the album), the version included on the single is listed as “Specially Remixed Version”. However, fans have noted that no difference can be heard between this “Specially Remixed Version” and the “LP Version”. Perhaps that is due to this “Specially Remixed Version” actually being the version pressed on the album. I’d be curious to hear the original mix of the song, if one even exists.

But, yes, the four tracks that you’ve mentioned above seem to be the only ones missing (aside from alternate videos on the DVD), unless someone else can confirm otherwise.

  10. Tracklisting for the live BBC show (disc 2) is incorrect… It’s 15 songs in all (not 14) track one is REMEMBER… the rest is as is… You can even see Remember as track one in the above picture….

  11. Since seeing this on Amazon I’ve had a look through my tape collection and can no longer find my tape of the In Concert broadcast. So I guess I now “need” the double CD. I don’t currently have a Blu Ray player, but that may change come the January sales. Not interested in the DVD unless it has a high res copy of the album, so whether I get the deluxe box may well be down to the packaging/book.

  12. Amazon.ca pulled the releases but my super deluxe order hasn’t been cancelled.
Also missing is an edit remixes and a remixes to Run To You and Summer of ’69. Theoretically could of thrown in It’s Only Love [with Tina Turner].

  13. Have been waiting for this since Bryan announced it on his website/Twitter. I find the $80 price tag a bit high for the Super Deluxe though which adds the DVD and Blu-Ray Audio. The 2CD edition is $30.

@Per Z: Was there a Reckless re-issue in Japan on SMH-CD that included Diana, Christmas Time and Reggae Christmas? I can only find a 10-track one.

But some B-sides form the era would have been nice:
Heaven (Live): could be from the BBC concert?
    Diana
Kids Wanna Rock (live): could be from the BBC concert?
    Christmas Time
    Reggae Christmas
    The Bryan Adamix

Let’s hope Draw The Line will also be included on CD2 of Super Deluxe currently only listed on Amazon UK for the 2CD version, making disc 1 17 tracks. Otherwise that track would be exclusive to the 2CD release.

I thought some music videos have several versions also, at least I saw different ones on VH1 Classic for Heaven, Somebody and would have been nice to get both.

  14. I agree with the above regarding “Diana” and “Christmas Time” not that I don’t already have those tracks on CD, but just that they’ve been lost away from the album for 30 years…. (agreed, BA “retired” the song from live performance after the passing of Lady Diana, perhaps that extends to here, and once down that road…) There was even a set of live recordings as b-sides (from the same source as this BBC recording?) and a BA megamix (just saying) that have been left off as well…..
    Still, I’m in on this!
Now, about extended versions of “Heat Of The Night” and others from INTO THE FIRE…..

  15. What Records have a tracklisting for the vinyl. Essentially it is disc one plus another unreleased track -“Draw the Line” plus 3 live tracks from disc two.
