Caravan / Who Do You Think We Are? 37-disc box set
Remastered albums on CD, unreleased concerts, Steven Wilson 5.1 mix & more

Limited to 2500 copies • Signed by surviving members of the band
Who Do You Think We Are?, a new career-spanning CD box set featuring Canterbury Band Caravan, will be released in August.
The 35CD+DVD+blu-ray box set features all the official Caravan albums, newly remastered – studio and live recordings among them – and are joined by 11 discs of previously unreleased live performances. A Blu-ray includes a Steven Wilson 5.1 surround sound mix of the classic In the Land of Grey and Pink album. In addition, a DVD includes vintage European TV performances from 1971 – 1981 (London Marquee, German TV’s ‘Swing In’, Bataclan, Paris & French TV show ‘Pop 2’).
The box set includes 144-page hardback coffee table book with rare Caravan photos and memorabilia, and a full discography. A second Fan Club book assembles historic press articles from across the band’s career, alongside a new interview with founder member Pye Hastings.
The box includes a photo signed by the three surviving members of the original Caravan line-up: Pye Hastings, Richard Sinclair and David Sinclair.
Finally, a selection of memorabilia includes a Caravan-centric map of Canterbury; a specially commissioned Caravan family tree poster, charting their long and circuitous progress and two replica 1970s gig posters.
Who Do You Think We Are? has been put together with the band’s full co-operation and is strictly limited to 2500 units worldwide. It is released by Madfish.
You can secure your copy by ordering via the SDE shop using this link or the button below. If you are in Europe, please remember that you may be charged VAT/import duty/clearance fees when your order arrives at your country.

A band I should definitely know more about, although this is clearly too much! I’m surprised that the BBC Sessions are not included, though?
Would you permit me to ask: Are the previously unreleased concert recordings professional, full fidelity recordings? I would note that all of the previously unreleased recordings in Madfish’s John Mayall box were sourced from bootlegs..
Hi Phil….in the earlier layout of SDE, if would always wait for your posts under the “get in touch” section…..your posts were extremely informative, interesting and accurate….In the new layout is there any place you are posting or can you direct me to the right place to find your posts?
Go to contact in the top navigation and then ‘SDE Postbox’ – this is the new replacement for the Get in touch page, although I haven’t officially mentioned this yet, but have been meaning to do so.
Perfect Paul….Indebted…..many comments to catch up with :)
I echo what you say Dibyaroop and have already mentioned to Paul in the SDE Postbox missing Phil’s posts. I look forward to the Postbox taking off again.
Hi Paul.
Just a small mistake: The track list has CD2 twice but no CD3…
I’ve ordered this from you Paul – I have been waiting since I saw the original notice on the band’s website which is why I didn’t order the 9 CD set from a couple of years back. Really looking forward to this !!!
Thanks very much Peter!
These Madfish box sets are going to be the my downfall………
Live at Shepherds Bush is shown as previously unreleased but I am sure that i have that on cd
At last! Originally due back in November 2020,then because of CoVid pushed back to March of this year and now finally this fab box to be released in August.
I bought the Decca/Deram years box as a stop-gap but this is the one I was waiting for.Roll on August and for once not because the new football season kicks off!
This seems to be targeting completists with very deep pockets.
I already have a box set of their early years, so this mammoth of a box set holds no value for me.
So Steven Wilson has created surrounds mixes for Crimson, Yes, Tull, Gentle Giant, Caravan….seems he’s happy to do 5.1 mixes for every prog band **except** Genesis. Sod’s Law that the one prog band he doesn’t like would happen to be my favourite!
Never mind – I wonder if he’s a fan of 10CC at all………
Has he said he doesn’t like Genesis? I’d imagine he’s had his hands full. He’s been doing Surround mixes for lots of people, plus writing, recording, and touring his own music. But lest we forget, it’s not as though he’s picking and choosing which titles he mixes, he has to be invited to do so. Perhaps Genesis simple haven’t asked, or agreed to fund the exercise?
He has said he’s not as big a fan of Genesis as of some other bands – however he did remix some of Steve Hackett’s solo albums!
Genesis had 5.1 surround sound mixes in their box sets. I guess they are ok with those versions.
As has been said, Genesis got Nick Davis to complete the stereo and 5.1 remixes back in 2007, the stereo remixes were not well received, and the band has shown absolutely no inclination to bend to the wishes of their fan-base, especially the fans of the pre-1980’s albums. Requests to release hi-res versions of the original stereo studio album masters and cleaned-up versions of the live-concert soundboard cassette tapes have fallen on deaf ears, or heard and dismissed. For this, they remain an enigma.
Wilson just remixed the Kiss Destroyer album. Maybe he’s going “un-prog”.
Interesting a band has released a 37CD set and I never heard of them. I thought my musical knowledge was better :)
Will have a listen (like I do with most music posted on this site).
I thought the same.
This is a monster size box that reminds me of the Gentle Giant one from a couple of years ago. Probably weighs enough to chock an aircraft tire. I don’t know where I would put it, but I want it.
Sound quality of the live recordings? Great band. Can’t wait for the vinyl version which will arrive on a wooden pallet inside a crate!
Burning Shed also have an edition that features a print signed by artist Bob Venables that is limited to 100 copies but it will set you back £350. Reminds me of a similar strategy that Island records used years back when they issued the Sandy Denny box set – copies of which will now set you back at least £600 or thereabouts, much more with the limited print!
I bought Sandy Denny’s box set year ago without the limited print. It cost me £770. So what, it’s only money!
It is now unavailable from Burning Shed.
9 cds for a fourth of the price of 37 cds is very similar value, I guess it comes down to how big a fan you are.
Sure, for devoted fans this must be a treasure trove and surely the set is mainly aimed for those. However for those with a more casual interest on the band, Canterbury sound or prog rock in general the other set has most of the essential stuff in good presentation. In general I would welcome that Madfish also presented “smaller” versions of some of the great sets they produce within an also reduced price frame, say 70-100 GBP. Believe there is also a market for that and they could still use some shortlisted materials from the big boxes without having to produce anything new.
Really torn on this, and not sure about the “value” for devoted fans. Seems like a better value for those who are new to the band and want one-stop shopping for the best available versions of everything. I’ve been a fan/collecting their stuff for years, including the expanded remasters from years ago as well as pretty much all of the official (and a few unofficial) live releases. Seems like there’s not enough new in this box to justify the outlay; wouldn’t fans have most of this stuff already (in well-mastered versions)? I love these beautifully made Madfish mega-sets, but in this case the existing releases cover pretty much most of what’s here.
Any place in the US selling it?
Thanks
Wayside Music offers it for $440 USD – a high price at first glance, however they charge only $3.50 for shipping within the US. Unfortunately for me, overseas purchases for items such as this have become cost prohibitive.
This will another wonderful set like all Madfish boxes are, but having got the earlier Decca/Deram Years collection plus the debut album on CD, and a rather battered vinyl copy (still playable) of Blind Dog… , plus lack of storage space means I will have to say no to this one. To those who do go for it, you are in for one hell of a treat. Enjoy!
Looks great though their recent Decca / Deram 9 cd set is still available for a fourth of the new set price. That set sound quality is quite good, good discs wallet reproductions and a nice booklet. Cheers
