Duran Duran / Rio reissue reissued

The 2009 Rio reissue (pictured) is being re-released as a digipack

Duran Duran‘s classic 1982 album Rio is being made available again this summer as a two-CD deluxe edition.

The 2009 double-disc reissue was packaged as a deluxe 60-page ‘casebound book’ with textured sleeve and featured a well-balanced selection of bonus tracks which included the US album mixes of five tracks, original demos, non-album singles and B-sides and the various 12-inch mixes of the era. The new version maintains the track listing but will dispense with the book-style packaging, instead making do with a digipack presentation.

It was noted by some at the time that it was rather crass to have the words ‘Limited Edition’ spoil the aesthetic of the front cover, but at least it does seem to have genuinely been limited since this set has been out-of-print for a while.

Rio will be reissued on 22 June 2015. A one-CD remaster will also be made available.

All of this reissue non-sense is useless Unless and Until a hi-Rez, surround format like the recent BR-A (5.1 & 7.1) / hybrid (multi) SACD combo pairing becomes the standard for ALL Super-Deluxe edition releases.

I’m considering going for the Vinyl remaster as my original is pretty badly worn. I’ve already got the 2009 2cd booklet which sounds good to me but what’s even better is that it contains the correct mixes as the original UK 1982 release. For years the cd version had different mixes (Lonely in your nightmare had louder drums, Hold Back The Rain had extra verses and a different middle eight, Save a prayer had a shorter outro), so I’m good with the 2009 remaster.

I got both versions of this new 2015 releases & are the same tracks as the 2009 version. If I did not collect their music I would have returned them. Funny they list shit that is not even on either version of these albums. Anyway, “Strange Behavior” has the Hold Back The Rain Alternate version to be on the Japanese & the instr “My Own Way” was easy to get, the X Mas message is easy to find as well. Just a shitty thing to false advertise the track listing to get people to buy these albums AGAIN.

Rob

Mine arrived today and can confirm the only difference between mine and the track listing above is, the 2015 release is missing 14. Simon’s Christmas Message 1982
Comes with a 24 page booklet

Svein

Still waiting for a Deluxe version of Medazzaland. I have a lot of the demos from that album and they are spectacular.

Mike the Fish

It did seem puzzling that the Carnival Mix of …Rain would be removed.

According to Classic Pop Mag the reissue won’t contain the Carnival Mix of Hold Back the Rain.

[…] SDE reported last week that Duran Duran‘s Rio was being reissued. For diehard fans this seemed a case of ‘nothing to see here’ since the track listing simply repeated the 2009 deluxe edition, but it has become apparent in the last few days that the 2015 Japanese edition of this reissue DOES appear have some exclusive bonus tracks! According to listings on both HMV and CDJapan, at the end of the second disc, the Japanese edition adds the following bonus tracks: […]

Bertielego

I just checked CDJapan…
…and indeed the Japanese reissue will include ‘My Own Way (instrumental version)’ and ‘Hold Back The Rain (Alternate Remix)’ as bonus tracks on the second disc!

The DD period that interests me most is the Nice/Montserrat / Sydney sessions era between Rio and Seven when things got messy for the band. I would love to hear some of the results of that mad period when the band were arguably under more pressure to come up with the goods than they ever had been before and more than they ever would be again. have also always wondered whether Faith In This Colour was written to order as a b-side for ITSISK or just the results of an experimental jam. I love their Roxy style instrumentals.

Loobop

they had a thing with digi pack reissues then they went to 2 cds with 1 dvd.

Even though i already have 2 cd versions of rio Theres some different tracks on this so may still buy it.

but like many others wish they’s make a wedding album reissue with dvd and the rest of the albums.

Eric

The digital version of the Arcadia deluxe is still under £4; yes, it’s mp3s and I feel guilty even mentioning them (haha), but at that price….at least until the physical edition ever gets reissued/repressed.

William

I recently bought the four 2CD & DVD box sets, Still chasing Arcadia and the 2009 ‘Rio’ the price of Rio is shocking in some places so I’m hoping this reissue is the sign that it’ll come down as I’ll buy the new version and this. I love Arcadia and just wish i had stumped up the cash when it came out. I actually got their debut,SATRT, Notorious & Big Thing for decent amounts al things considered, looking forward to the new album and any further deluxe re-issues

Friso Pas

Was it an interesting booklet in 2009? Or just a lot of pictures?
Quite pricey on discogs…

Mike the Fisher

Approx 56 pages. Lyrics, track listing with basic credits. Lots of pictures, an essay by Daryl Easlea, which is not massively long but does touch on the reason for the U.S. mixes.

Dav

And a very frustrating booklet for pedants like me who didn’t like the fact that there were photos in the booklet dating from the ITSISK era and later. For a reissue to be perfect in my mind no photos or material from any period after the release and promotion of the last single from the album should be included.

mike

i think its a good sign, the signing with Warners gets Rio reissued very quickly, suspect the others will be reissued bar the aberation that is the first LP remaster. Then hopefully Liberty, TWA, Thank You will follow deluxe with some full live sets (Rotterdam 87, Wembley 88 would be a good start, with Unplugged 93 next) and a new GH album – then they can get to work on issuing the archive including Dont Look Back, the original SATRT, A Matter of Fact, ITSISK Bob Clearmountain mix, the Liberty outtakes etc… Or I may be wrong… Rumours the Jap deluxe reissue Rio has the two digital additions from the remaster, My Own Way Instrumental and Hold Back the Rain Alternate Remix.

Mike the Fisher

They were download bonuses in the UK.

Si

All this talk about a reissue has made me take a listen to the Rio remasters.

To me the early remaster does sound bright especially when you hear crashing cymbals. The bass isn’t on the heavy side. Is this how it sounded in the studio or has some treble been added to the remaster?

I think the 2011 remaster is an attempt to give the album a bit more oomph compared to the earlier remaster. The sound has more bass and less treble, some people will say it’s been compressed too much but then I think the earlier version is too bright.

If you like a more bassier sound, go for the 2011 version. If you like a brighter treble sound, the earlier remaster is the one for you.

Cindy

Thanks for noting Simon’s Christmas message – I have the 2009 reissue and they didn’t note that on the track listing on the packaging. It’s attached to track 13, that’s probably why.

claudio

…once again: SEVEN & THE RAGGED TIGER 2CD+DVD and the 2nd SINGLES BOX SET!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and also LIBERTY AN WEDDING ALBUM deluxe!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nate

After all the hullabaloo about Duran signing with Warner Bros. and being reunited with their back catalog for the first time in many years…anticipation grew…What happened?

Nate

My comment was a general one, certainly not directed at you Mr. Sinclair! Almost every outlet that mentioned the new Duran / Warners partnership brought up the reunion with their catalog…even John Taylor makes note of it on the Duran Duran website.

Thanks for all you do SDE!!!!

omar

I think it’s pointless reissuing Rio. They should’ve done a deluxe of The Wedding Album.

Karen

I have a 2 disc version of the Wedding Album. It was called the “Tour Edition”. It was not in a jewel case. Not sure if it is still available now

paul marry me karen b

the night versions cd was incedible and there’s no ned to get more duran duran.

Don

I have this with the book packaging and I like the textured cover. It’s a pretty cool set. Didn’t realize it had the wrong version of Hold Back the Rain, though!

HOWEVER, as others have said, I wish they’d go ahead and release deluxe versions of the albums that haven’t been covered yet, especially The Wedding Album. That one seems like a no-brainer!

Mike the Fisher

It doesn’t. It was the first time it had the RIGHT version on CD!

dazzler

My copy of the 2009 deluxe edition has de single remix of Hold Back the Rain on it instead of the album version. The 2001 remaster has the correct version of that song. How ’bout this 2015 reissue. If it’s a repackage, it will have the same mistake, I guess.

Mike the Fisher

The original vinyl LP version of …Rain is what you hear on the 2009. Pesos CD versions were significantly different. The 2009 was the first time they got it right!

Mike the Fisher

Sorry, 2011 version!

Mike the Fisher

Oops, right the first time. The 2009 is correct.

Matthew North

Its a shame that some of these remasters were not very good, Severn reissue was awful compared to my original CD that sounds great.

Dean

Sadly, they compressed the sound on the newest remaster of Rio. The older CD has a DR (Dynamic Range – high numbers better on a scale of 1-15) of 13. The newer remaster has a DR value of 10.

I’m not a Duran Duran fan, but I checked, and they used compression on all the new remasters. The bottom line is – if you want the extras, go for the newer releases. But if you want the absolute better sound then you’re going to need to get the early releases. Everything after the early 2000’s but Duran Duran has been compressed……

Warwick James

Darren – knowing EMI, I’d say ABSOLUTELY!! $$$$

Darren

Paul, do you know if the intention is to re-release all the deluxe issues in this format?

nodisco

It’s a shame that the various Duran Duran’s deluxe reissue are completely different: the first album, Seven and the ragged tiger, Notorious and Big thing in 3-discs boxes, Rio in 2-disc casebound book, Arcadia in an old-style double cd case… was it so difficult to choose ONE format for them all?
