Elvis / That’s The Way It Is deluxe
Sony will release a massive ten-disc box set in August celebrating Elvis Presley‘s 1970 album and documentary That’s The Way It Is.
The original album contained 12 tracks (eight studio recordings and four live songs) whereas this lavish deluxe set houses 156 tracks of audio, with 21 unreleased live recordings.
The documentary film (directed by Denis Sanders) showed Elvis on and off-stage with plenty of behind-the-scenes footage and this is included here twice, once in the original 1970 theatrical cut, and again in 2001 special edition guise (re-edited and extended).
The reason for the eight CDs is because this set includes six complete shows (two of them released for the first time in their entirety) from The King’s Summer of ’70 Las Vegas season, as well as a disc of rehearsal highlights. This is on top of the first disc which contains the original album expanded with four singles from the period and a selection of outtakes.
This an 80-page booklet full of photos and recording information and all the content resides in a outer slipcase.
That’s The Way It Is (deluxe edition) is released on 5 August 2014.

Am I correct in saying that the bluray of ‘That’s The Way It Is’ is being released the same day but is NOT included with this set? That makes no sense. Please tell me I’m wrong.
John you are not alone in your thinking. Of course this is overpriced but record companies only exist by getting us to buy the same material over and over again at inflated prices. The millions of cd’s that clog up the cheap racks of second hand music sellers show that the majority of “new music” just doesn’t sell. No doubt Presley fanatics will grab this set on release, but how often will it be played? We have had re-issue upon re-issue of the Presley back catalogue and still it comes!
The current vogue for vinyl shows how little respect companies have for there customers. Was it only twenty years ago that we were being told that vinyl was dead. So after trying to get us to buy DAT, Mini Disc and every other new format they’ve come up with vinyl as a way of extracting more money from gullible buyers.
I totally agree.
If Paul wanted to do a feature and can get any info on how the retail price is arrived at on the more expensive box sets I would be interested to know.
What makes one box £50, one box £90 and another £130 when the actual content does not warrant such price disparity in most cases. Are we paying more for sets because they are related to more iconic names, because of the people involved, a random decision by the record company? Why is someone paying for vinyl or conversely high -res digital that neither buyer wants bundled together?
Are the record company offices really full of deluded decision makers who think they are giving us the absolute best product they can or are they a group of cynical businessmen trying to squeeze every last penny out of us while laughing, shouting suckers and giving us the V sign?
I think record companies need to understand that people who enjoy music enjoy a variety of bands and artists and will be interested in plenty of reissues/anniversary editions/deluxe editions but with the £100+ prices they are forcibly excluding people.
I would happily buy five £50 super deluxe sets knowing I am paying a fair price but I will not buy two £125 ones where I know I am being shafted.
