David Bowie‘s reissued Sound + Vision box is out this week. As expected the four CDs reside in a ‘fatbox’ double CD case which comes with an outer card slipcase.
The 60-page booklet represents the 2003 Kurt Loder notes and includes the expected archive photos (not always the best quality). All in all you can’t really go wrong with this set at the current retail price of well under £20.

I got the original Rykodisc CD box when it came out (the person who got it for me got the vinyl version, but I wanted the extra tracks), this is an excellent set. I always loved the demo of’ “Space Oddity” and the B-Side version of “The Wild-Eyed Boy From Freecloud” is the definitive studio version. I never picked up any of the many reissues of it…
This collection made sense in 1989 as a sampler for the upcoming Rykodisc reissues. Today it seems like a rather pointless reissue to me, except for collectors who missed the previous editions. It is NOT a “best of” or “greatest hits” package. It is worth getting for the rarities. Casual buyers looking for a good Bowie compilation should check out “The Platinum Collection”, which includes the three CDs from the “Best of David Bowie” series in a nice package.
Though I haven’t seen the real thing yet, I have to admit I prefer this packaging to the original Ryko – slots nicely next to the rest of my collection without this odd LP-sized box that doesn’t seem to fit anywhere (well, maybe next to my LP’s…)
The 2003 version of ‘Sound & Vision’ isn’t “a little bit less lavish”at all – in fact it certainly trumps the packaging of the Ryko version with all those different paper stocks, silk-screened clear plastic slots, fold-out poster, individual pockets and “mirrored” typefaces.
Got this through the post earlier this week. Hell of a bargain!
Mine arrived on Monday and I like the compact packaging. I only have the Ryko box 3CD set with the CD Video EP as the fourth disc. So I felt the different packaging and additional disc was worth it for the price. I know plenty of people who will not bother but as a career retrospective from 69-93 you can’t go far wrong with it. Looking forward to the forthcoming Nothing Has Changed and doing an amalgam version losing any duplication and putting the whole thing in chronological order.
Similar situation for me. Just have the Ryko original. Spending £40+ in 2003 for the update didn’t seem worth it, but this is definitely worth getting at this price and I prefer the design to 2003.
The music is the thing, so this is an outright winner.
Having said that, it’s got “cheap and cheerful” written all over it.
Still, essential for Bowie fans who don’t already own the set (which I do).
They’ve done ‘lavish’ (original S+V) – then they did a bit less ‘lavish’ (2003)… what’s left to do but ‘cheap and cheerful’ :)
