Formel Eins / Long Versions

formeleins

Sony Music are releasing a new three-CD collection of 1980s extended mixes later this month.

Formel Eins: The Long Versions is primarily aimed at the Germany market, branded as it is after Germany’s popular music TV show which ran for seven years between 1983 and 1990. Blank and Jones released their own so80s Formel Eins set back in 2013.

The selection has the usual favourites including Wham!, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Thompson Twins, Nik Kershaw et al. If you think any mixes here are new-to-CD please leave a comment and let us know.

Formel Eins: The Long Versions is released on 13 March 2015.

@Kiefer2, got my copy & listened to the 2 mixes! Whitney’s okay (volume is a bit too loud like most CD’s now in my taste)! I’ve been told by a friend that MSM’s Bad Boy Dub Version was from vinyl on Japanese reissue of “Primitive Love”! This one sounds like sourcing from vinyl as well. Perhaps it was from that Japanese Mini-LP CD as well. How about the one on Dance Classics Pop Edition Vol. 5? Do you have that CD since you’ve previously mentioned it.

Matt Eastwood

I got curious about that Georgy Porgy remix, so I looked it up on Youtube. It’s virtually identical to the version I have on the “Past to Present” compilation from 1990, which is presumably the album version.

It’s just that some parts of it are repeated more often, adding 1 minute to the song.

If that was your reason to buy, I’d say don’t. Instead, import the K2HD version of the “Past to Present” album, which is still available and sounds amazing.

Griffin

BTW Paul, could you please check with Sony/BMG whether they’ll release more Whitney Houston Remastered/Expanded/Deluxe Edition with Bonus tracks? And perhaps also Gloria Estefan/Miami Sound Machine? Before I going through the trouble get my hands on those old releases (Whitney & Enrique Maxi CD & MSM 2009 Japanese Remastered Expanded Editions) then to find out (in the near future) a more complete expanded edition will be out soon. Then I would kill myself ;(

Boaz Halachmi

Why no one saying nothing about them copying B&J’s cover art? It seems they try to get a ride on their success and confuse people to believe this is a B&J release.

Boaz Halachmi

@Paul: Of course. But I was referring more to the layout. Label logo middle top, large logo in the middle, descriptive sentence at the bottom, plain background. Many B&J releases had black background.

lo

The good things are re-released anyway. Thankfully! Coz the worst thing here is to have totally crap with Blue System, Modern Talking, Hubert Kah, Rick Astley…. Sound for the landfill.

Dejan

… still I got most of them in better versions. I think I got tracks 12 inch versions of Dead or Alive that NEVER have been released on any compilation. However blame the repetitive compilations on record companies that screws up the track listings all the time. You will always get at least 2-3 tracks per CD you have seen many times before. Unless you are either Blank & Jones or Ben Liebrand.

Charles

Wow, this one is all over the map with regards to the selection! Looks pretty cool!

pinkfloyd

not so 80s is it?
with Toto (70s) & Sade (90s)…
shouldn’t the “long versions” be chosen from 83 – 90?

Kiefer2

Just once I would love to see the “Long Version” of Bonnie Tyler’s “Band of Gold” on cd. Remixed by Arthur Baker, it’s just great and was only on a murky vinyl.

Charlie Shine

Bonnie Tyler’s “Band of Gold – Long Version” is available on Bonnie Tyler’s CD ‘Collection Gold’ released by CBS Holland back in 1990. I ain’t sure whether it comes from the original master tapes but, at least the sound is on CD quality.

Kind regards!

Gary C

The Toto track was used a couple of years back on a Late Nite Tales compilation. Might have been one mixed by Groove Armada

Gary C

Oops, and it’s from 1978

Brian

No Ordinary Love by Sade isn’t 80’s. It’s 90’s.

Mike the Fish

Method of Modern Love is not the (full) 12″ mix.

Stefano

It’s just the full length album version Mike.

Griffin

I would get this for the following 2 mixes:
Love Will Save the Day – Jellybean & David Morales 1987 Classic Underground Mix (07:30)
Previously only digitally available on itunes (some vinyl before) I believe first time on CD officially (different mix than on her promo/CD singles)

Bad Boy – Dub Version (06:43)
i’ve never got this one from MSM/Gloria Estefan CD’s/CD Singles!

Kiefer2

The “Classic Underground Mix” was/is commercially available on the Whitney/Enrique Iglasis “Could I Have This Kiss Forever” Canadian cd single. Rare, yes, but not the first time on cd.

Kiefer2

The “Bad Boy Dub Version” is also available on “Dance Classics Pop Edition Vol. 5” 2 cd set as well as the previously mentioned Japanese reissue of “Primitive Love”

Griffin

@Kiefer2, many thanks again! I didn’t know about their/her Japanese Remastered + Bonus tracks! Perhaps I’ll get those instead!

Griffin

@Kiefer2, many thanks, first time on CD (in Europe then)! :P

Maybe I should get that CD Maxi instead!

Tom

Can they not find another Dead or Alive song to reissue 5,000 times over again?

I believe “Bad Boy” dub mix was reissued on the Japanese remaster of “Primitive Love” a few years back.

Francis

Yet a lot of the same 12inch mixes that have been released on numerous CDs at some point!

Francis

Most of the tracks featured have been on CD releases already, either on other compilations or artists deluxe editions. YAWN!

Lets have some artists 12inch versions that have never been on CD – Savage Progress, Private Lives, Jakko, Pete Shelley, Paul Haig, Matt Fretton, Fiat Lux, Animal Nightlife, Amazulu, Sylvester……etc, etc.

Bad Boy (Dub version) already released before on CD, Dance Classics – Pop Edition Vol. 5:

Dejan

Simply a great compilation.

Stefano

Toto’s disco version of Georgy Porgy has made a digital release more than once of different Sony compilations.

The Bad Boy dub version of the Miami Sound Machine is a debut as far as I know. Awkward choice, but very welcome.

The 12 inch English language version of Falco’s Jeanny (‘Girl Is Missing’) is kind of rare on CD. It has been released before on an Austrian GiG/BMG compilation in 2002, but to my knowledge that has been the only time.

Sade’s No Ordinary Love is 7:18 album version. Nothing new here.

This is not a bad compilation. It has a few hard to find gems. The disco mix of “Georgy Porgy” is first to cd as far as I know. It’s also a beautiful song.
“Bad Boy Dub version” is also first to cd. More and more dub versions are finding their way to cd, a great development.
“Celebrate the Youth” from Rick Springfield is not new to cd but very rare. It’s on a japanese import called “12 Inch Collection” by Rick Springfield and now out of print.
No idea what mix “no ordinary love” by Sade is. Paul it would he helpful to get the times for each song, that way we can determine what some of these mixes are.
Don’t know if “Magic Symphony” is new to cd but it’s rare although the Blue System and Modern Talking mixes are generally short and badly remixed. All and all not a bad compilation at all.

paul marry me karen b

just started collecting the original fe cds.i have 22 and can’t/won’t stop.
i hope the final artwork includes the cheeky dog.

Charlie Shine

The disco mix of “Georgy Porgy” was first available on ‘Club Columbia’ CD released in the U.S.
