Grace Jones / “Nightclubbing”: 2CD deluxe, blu-ray audio and 2LP

image002

Grace Jones‘ 1981 album Nightclubbing will be issued as a two-CD deluxe edition in April 2014.

The album was the second in Jones’ so-called Compass Point Trilogy, produced by Chris Blackwell and Alex Sadkin at Blackwell’s Bahamas recording studio.

Widely regarded as her best studio work, the record spawned many singles including Pull Up To The Bumper, Demolition Man and I’ve Seen That Face Before (Libertango). This deluxe reissue sees Nightclubbing remastered for the first time with the bonus CD bringing together a large number of remixes, as well as offering two previously unreleased tracks (including a cover of the Gary Numan/Tubeway Army track Me! I Disconnect From You.

Blu-ray Audio has the full 2CD deluxe content

No fewer than six versions of Pull Up To The Bumper can be found in this new double disc set including the 1985 remix, the rare 1981 ‘Party Version’, and Peanut Butter, an instrumental version of the song. Sadly, their is no place for the ‘Musclemix’ – a megamix which starts and ends with Pull Up To The Bumper and in between takes in some of Jones’ greatest hits, including three tracks from Nightclubbing.

A two-LP gatefold heavyweight vinyl record will also be issued, with the second LP including six remixes (as well as the two unreleased tracks).

The good news is that Universal appear to have ticked all the boxes with this release. The double LP comes with a digital download, and there will be a physical hi-res option with a Pure Audio blu-ray audio edition that contains all 22 tracks found on the two-CD deluxe version.

Nightclubbing is reissued on 28 April 2014.

  1. So the vinyl arrived today sadly it’s stratched.

As with the Frankie – Relax 12″ it’s factory damage as there’s a fair amount of “paper” dust in them.

    So that’s going back

Has anyone used the download voucher? is it the vinyl version or is it the 2CD version?

  4. I have noticed that it states that Feel Up (Long Version) 6.15 was issued as the B-side of 12” single 12 WIP 6696, June 1981. This was not the case, as the B-Side version was the extended album version running for 5:17 as present on my UK 12″ of Pull Up To The Bumper – 12 WIP 6696. I believe the 6:15 version was known as the ‘Larry Levan Mix’ and was issued as A-side of US promotional 12” single PRO-A-985 as well as the first of two tracks on the B-Side for the 12″ 1986 Remix of Private Life – 12 IS 273.

  5. The Peanut Butter/Bumper story – The rhythm track was “inspired” by Brothers Johnson’s I’ll Be Good to You. It was first recorded with a Grace Jones lyric that she later rejected. Believing that the track was now up for grabs, Sly & Robbie reworked it with a new Peanut Butter lyric “Spread yourself all over me/like peanut butter” and new syndrum parts. In the meantime, Grace had written the Bumper lyric and reclaimed the track for Nightclubbing. The Peanut Butter instrumental was released as the B-side of Junior Tucker’s The Kick, WIP-6675, released February 16, 1981. The song Peanut Butter appeared on Gwen Guthrie’ second Island album.

  6. I’d love a deluxe version of SLAVE TO THE RHYTHM with the original tracklisting restored. It was moved around a bit on the CD released in Australia. Operattack was shifted. Perhaps a DVD or something and other versions that never made the cut….

  7. As far as Gold Legion and the reissues of “Inside Story” and “Bulletproof Heart” are concerned, this is a perfect example of researching a company before you hand over you financial information to them. All you have to do is conduct a google search on Gold Legion Records and you will find nothing but complaints about them taking your money for pre-orders that either never are issued or are issued 2 to 3 years later. I hope you were able to file complaints with your credit card companies. Gold Legion should be forced out of business. They are crooks who rarely deliver on promised products.

  8. Thanks for the updates folks, unlike some other artists I’ve never really talked to other Grace collectors. There’s certainly enough material to justify “Warm Leatherette” and “Living My Life” deluxe editions – maybe if “Nightclubbing” sells enough copies this will happen.

Anyone else like Grace’s disco era? I really think the “Fame” album in particular is underrated, and “On Your Knees” demands a decent master, even the 12″ single has substandard sound I think (a bit flat sounding to me).

    1. Grace’s disco era reissues will be welcome too. Less followers probably. Enoguh material for 2CD edition?

The 90’s missing albums, “Balck Marilyn” and “Force Of Nature” are another excellent option if they are complete.

  9. This is great news! But does anyone know if the digital download that comes with the LP’s contains all the songs from the CD’s as well, or just the songs on the vinyl? The article doesn’t make it clear.

  10. If the track lists are correct, the two previously unreleased tracks are longer on the 2xLP, “8.00 approx” vs. 6.40 and “5.30 approx” vs. 5.23. Why? CD2 total duration is about 76½ minutes, so there is space for the longer versions on the CD! I hope that’s just a mistake in the listing.

How about moving those two tracks at the end of CD1? That way ‘Musclemix’ for which there was ‘sadly’ no place, could be included.

  11. Am I the only one that is somewhat stunned to see that Grace Jones did a cover of… Me, I Disconnect From You???

I’m going to have to buy this release just so I can hear what that sounds like (I love the original – great opening to a great album).

Also – much as I love Grace’s other stuff ‘Slave to the Rhythm’ is the one I would most like to hear remastered and deluxed-up… :-)

  12. What a shame about the Gold Legion reissues. Have any of you tried phoning them instead of just emailing? I don’t understand what they’re playing it. I ordered their reissue of Koo Koo by Debbie Harry and had no problems. What a shame they’ve gone downhill so much. Even though I’m not affected by these problems, I’m outraged on all you behalfs!

THIS Grace Jones reissue looks great though!

  13. I see there is a dvd available of the one man show expanded and retitled live in concert.
Was tempted but apparently its very poor quality.
I need to see this maybe its on youtube?

  14. Bout time! So excited for this! Now all we need is One Man Show on BluRay (heck I’d even take a DVD)…
And speaking of Grace Jones reissues – I echo VALGAPA’s warning about Gold Legions supposed deluxe editions of Grace’s ‘Bulletproof Heart’ and ‘Inside Story’. They’ll happily take your cash, then won’t respond to you when the discs don’t arrive. Ordered mine about 18 months ago – they’ve ignored every message I’ve sent them. Don’t deal with them…

    1. I have same problem with Gold Legion. Ordered ‘Inside Story’ in October 2012. They take your cash and they don’t respond to messages. Beware of the Gold Legion.

  15. Were there many videos/promos made for this album, could there possibly have been a bonus dvd as part of this deluxe edition?
Maybe they will do a dvd as part of some best of or singles collection with the 7″ mixes and all the promos? Must look up her videography.

  16. To Remasta Addikt:
The Disconet Remix of ‘Pull up to the bumper’ IS available on a cd called
    “Disconet Remix Greatest Hits vol.18”
Just google for it and you’ll find it.

  17. Excellent news about this special edition. I just hope it is not brickwall remastered. Peanut Butter? Wasn’t that a Sly & Robbie song recorded by Gwen Guthrie? It is also a pity the super rare Disconet remix of Pull Up To The Bumper is left off. It never gets a mention, or does the mix appear under a different name? If not, THAT version is a real rarity. I believe it was a very limited edition 12″ and cost $100 to buy when it was first released. Anyone know anything more about that?

  18. This is brilliant news. Grace albums all deserve this treatment. I’m gutted there’s no 7” mixes, but can only hope these are being saved for a definitive ‘Greatest Hits Collection’. Can’t wait for this – long overdue!

  19. I would like a deluxe reissue of “A One Man Show” with performances of this show not included originally. Some of them can been found on youtube.

Peanut Butter as the 7″ b-side of Walking In The Rain is a shorter edit.
This ‘Peanut Butter’ longer version included in this reissue appears only in the indicated maxi-cassette and a 12″ of Compass Point All Stars. Complete info on Discogs. CTIS240

  20. Yes on paper it looks great. Lets just pray the remastering is the business and that there are no silly errors in the booklet.
Yes would like to know what tracks are on cd here for the first time, i believe some tracks have been issued on various compilation cds around the world judging by some old reviews over on amazon.

  21. It’s a great choice by the company, I think a great success and its price too. I hope to edit in all deluxe edition albums, as it is one of the best singers of all time. Well it’s great. Thank you. I have already completed the pre order.

  22. Thanks Stephen, much appreciated, I was starting to panic thinking all these years I’d been missing a vinyl treasure.

The track list should be amended for this one (2 Pull Up To The Bumper (Long Version) 5.45
    Issued as A-side of 12” single 12 WIP 6696, June 1981.) because it wasn’t on 12 WIP 6696.

  23. I agree about living my life, it’s her best album. I have the rare original cd but a deluxe version of that with bonus tracks and remixes would be amazing.

  24. AT LAST! I thought I might die before this was finally released. Regarding the ‘Pull Up To The Bumper’ (Long Version) at 5 :45, I have this on a World Dance CD Compilation from the U.S. and it is basically the original long version 5:45 before it was edited down for the album 4:40. It has an extra verse in the middle as included on the 1981 ‘Party Mix’ and 1985 ‘Paul “Groucho” Smykle Remix’, a touch more instrumental as well as a longer drum/percussion section with car horns before she sings the final verse. I personally think they should have kept it unedited before editing down for the album. I hope this helps.

    1. Don’t forget the Blu-ray Audio. I *think* this is the first time a Pure Audio has been released at the same time as a reissue and mirrored the 2CD track listing. What they *should* have done with Tears For Fears’ “The Hurting”…

    2. I will buy every formats !! (the download seems to be included)
Do you realize that 2014 will see the light of Grace new album + Nightclubbing deluxe + a record store special 12″ ??
Am I dreaming ? I wish they would also reissue the 2 other compass point albums.

  25. I know i’m greedy but can we have an expanded ‘Living My Life’ soon please;both albums are irresistible.Regarding gold legion Alan, their service is lamentable [a Sarah Dash album that was sent [apparently]never arrived but none of my emails were answered.
But this is about this brilliant album where Grace is backed by Sly & Robbie..

  26. Hope there is somewhere in the future will be a deluxe treatment for OOP album ‘Living My Life’. For me this is the best album from GJ, much better that Nightclubbing.

  27. This is a must buy for me, lets hope there are more to follow.hope the remaster is done nicely and not brickwalled.are any of these remixes new to cd?

      1. Great to hear! This was my only concern. Too many overlaps with this excellent double album that was released back in 1998. With the amazon tracklist I couln’t figure it out. Thanks Paul for easing my mind. Certain buy for me now!

  28. Easily her best album so fully deserves a deluxe edition (which was allegedly planned in both 2006 and 2009 but never saw the light of day). I can live without the Portuguese Libertango as it’s just a variation on the theme of the Spanish version (which sounds more pleasing).

The only other obvious omission looks to be the Edited Remix of Walking in the Rain, which appeared on the UK 7″. Other than that, seems to have covered most of the bases.

  29. It should be noted that the two versions of Feel Up are the same also.

I just dug out my vinyl to check – I don’t have that 5.45 mix on any of my copies of Pull Up. It isn’t listed on Discogs… what do we have here? The 5.00 Party Mix isn’t rare, it was on the UK 12″, Dutch and US.

  30. About damn time!

From the bonus tracks Peanut Butter was first released as the 7″ b-side of Walking In The Rain in the UK.

My copy of the original Pull Up UK 12″ also has the 5.00 Party Mix on it, as do my copies from other countries with Libertango on the flip, so I’m not sure what this 5.45 mix is. The 7.15 remix is brilliant by the way, a proper 80s extended mix of the album track with a couple of really nice breakdowns.

They’ve forgotten about the Portugese 7″ of Libertango which is another alternate mix. The other missing track is a semi-instrumental Demolition Man from the soundtrack LP “They Call That An Accident” – again like Peanut Butter this is credited to the Compass Point All-Stars, but it is the same track as Grace’s.

  31. YUMMY!

now, if we can only get those Gold Legion remastered deluxe editions of Inside Story and Bulletproof Heart that i PAID for 18 months ago, but have never been released. Gold Legion won’t answer my emails or refund my money. BUYER BEWARE!

but i digress. THIS release looks to be absolutely genius!

and HELLO ZTT! please remaster a deluxe edition of Slave To The Rhythm. and i’d love the remainder of grace’s catalog as well.

    1. With the record label LEGION GOL can not put one in touch, who never respond, never. The 2 CD’s of Grace Jones had to have gone on sale in September 2012 and to date nothing. You can not make any purchases until I have not edited and do not refund the money if you ask.

  32. FANTASTIC NEWS!!! I’ve been waiting forever for this to get the “remaster” treatment – and the fact that it’s going to get the “deluxe” treatment too makes it even more of a sure thing!!! Here’s hoping there’s going to be more Grace rereleases on the way!
