NewsMetallica announce massive box sets for their first two albums
US heavy rockers Metallica‘s first two albums, 1983’s Kill ‘Em All and Ride The Lightning (1984), will be reissued as enormous ten and 11-disc box sets (respectively) this coming April…
Both albums have been remastered (as you might expect) and form but a small part of the deluxe box sets which take in live performances, unreleased demos and rough mixes, interviews, radio spots and more! Both boxes include CDs, black vinyl records, vinyl picture discs and a DVD along with books including rare photos and essays and other paraphernalia.
The Kill ‘Em All box includes the album on CD and vinyl as well as a 2LP vinyl pressing of Live at Espace Balard (Paris, France Feb 9th, 1984) and a vinyl picture disc of the Jump in the Fire single. All the vinyl comes with digital downloads.
The four CDs (in addition to the album) include a disc of rough mixes and rarities, Live at J Bees Rock III, Live at The Keystone, Palo Alto, CA and a CD of interviews and Radio IDs. Finally a DVD of Metallica Live at the Metro in Chicago on August 12th, 1983 is included which is mostly previously unreleased.
The Ride The Lightning box follows a similar template, although is even bigger. As well as the remastered album on vinyl and CD, the Metallica fan gets to enjoy Live at the Hollywood Palladium (from 1985) on double vinyl and a vinyl picture disc of the Creeping Death single. There are five more CDs in this box (a total of six): an interview disc, ten unreleased rough takes/demos from Lars’ vault, and three live performances from Kabuki Theatre (San Francisco), Lyceum Theatre (London) and Castle Donington respectively.
The DVD in Ride The Lightning box offers footage of the band Live at the Metal Hammer Festival in Germany in 1985, Live at MTV’s Day on the Green (California, 1985) and some early interview footage from Danish TV.
Both boxes come with a hardcover book. Kill ‘Em All also has a patch, while Ride The Lightning includes a ‘mini-book’ of handwritten lyrics and a set of three posters.

Nice looking sets but seem pricey. Its as if they’re pricing them high to knock ’em down around release date.
They have to mix up the formats to get more people buying turntables. It’s a marketing ploy, as the industry is pushing vinyl more than CDs now.
Are these limited editions like the Led Zeppelin ones? They appear to have the same design and format as them in some manners. Also there is no artwork on the cheap ass digipackages for the live shows in it. How lame.
On Fnac.com (France) there is a simple edition remastered of this 2 albums ;-)
Although i am not a fan, but gee the box sets look amazing, massive is the word, i remember when Pink Floyd’s The Division Bell first arrived in a box set, and the price was a fraction over the top to say the least, 12 months down the line half the cost. In regards to the huge Metallica box sets out of interest sake i wonder how many box sets will be available? I must admit if i was a Metallica fan i would buy them immediately. Will the prices decrease over the next few weeks?
Or the song remains the same? Let’s hope too that they don’t run out of copies?

I’ve cancelled my amazon us order ( worked out at £240 for both including import fees) and ordered from spin – thanks to Chris L pointing out their price above. £99 each delivered is more than reasonable and I don’t have to scour half a dozen amazon sites working out which will end up being the cheapest.
Amazon UK finally have a listing – £150 for Kill and £205 for Ride. Hahahaha! What is the point in listing stuff at such ridiculous prices when most people know that the prices will drop dramatically. Don’t Amazon realise that listing at such stupid prices will actually put some people off from ordering with them! Spin have both boxes listed at £99. I expect the Amazon prices will drop to around the same but in the meantime, they’ll lose orders to outlets such as Spin.

Metallica has always taken care of and given back to their fans from day one, this is a true Metallica fans dream come true. Can’t wait for more like this!

I’ll add my voice to this. I’ve not interest at all in the music here, it’s not my thing.
However – huge round of applause at the package itself, and the effort put forth. To some these may seem wildly over the top, but for avid fans I’m sure it’s a treasure trove. Talking about adding value! So congrats to the label, and I’m really happy for fans of the band, because they’re getting something new and exciting.
Metallica own all their own back catalogue and these sets are getting released via their own independent company Blackened Recordings.
Now thats how to do a super deluxe!!

Let’s hope Puppets and Justice sets are being planned now.
I’d be very interested in a complete CD album box set of new remixes/remasters but I won’t be buying any box sets that include vinyl, which I have no use for. I wish all box sets in general were geared toward either the CD or vinyl consumer, rather than mixing them up.

I agree as well. I don’t know why they keep putting vinyl in these box sets. I wish they would do the exact same sets in terms of booklets and other junk: one with CDs /DVDs or CDs/BluRay only and then the other with Vinyl/DVDs or Vinyl/BluRay only. I can’t figure out the logic that guides this mixed format approach.
Well certainly they have given the fans content ! I wonder why they ( and others ) mix the formats. OK to offer the concert on vinyl if you also offer on CD. I do not have a turntable any more.

I was prepared to be totally underwhelmed by these re-releases given that the band had “gone dark” on them for a while, but this is truly impressive.
That said, given their reputation for horribly smashed and brickwalled recordings, I’ll hold off until the reviews are in before deciding if these belong in my collection or not.
Only interested in a CD only box. Don’t want the LP’s.
Have to concur with Tony and Jack. Truly deserving of the title Super Deluxe, and nobody grumbling about the price for once. That makes a pleasant change.
I don’t follow Metalica at all, but if I were a fan I’d be drooling. I only wish I got something hardcore like this from each Madonna classic album sadly she isn’t after money when it comes to re-issues.
But the only thing this is lacking IMO would be BLU Ray HD Audio discs of the album in 2.0 and 5.1 (if possible)
Massive sets fans should be thrilled.
Would love to get a massive reissue of Madonna’s albums minus the vinyl ( I’m way to lazy to be flipping sides). But it will never happen while she is alive, she is too obsessed with pretending she’s still relevant to the kids. And no doubt thinks she will be a “has been” if she were to pay to much attention to the back catalog. A shame, as she has some of the best pop tunes of the last 50 years.
Not a Metallica guy at all, but, clearly, this is the way you do reissues properly. So many artists could learn from this.

Bummer you have to get the vinyl with the CDs, could also do without the disc of interviews. Lars is insufferable enough with his mouth closed, couldn’t imagine sitting through a disc of him blathering on. There were so many more demos they could have put out with Kill ‘Em All, it’s a real shame what few we’re getting.
Definitely hoping for a complete remix of Justice, add bass and do something about that absolutely wretched drum sound.
I agree – just want the CDs. Often remastering isn’t enough – would like to see more deluxe reissues with remastered versions and remixed versions.

I do not care about Metallica at all BUT these look very interesting. Looks like they cover a lot of ground, possibly good packaging and even digital downloads so you get the music on all main formats. Well done!
Great news indeed as long as they finally fix the bass issues with …And Justice. It may not be possible but one would hope. Either way, this reissue campaign is way overdue and welcome by me. I am not a huge Thrash fan but early Metallica and pretty much all of Slayer’s catalog were a definite few exceptions for me.
Prices are similar to the Led Zeppelin super deluxe sets but with way more “new” content. These are seriously tempting. It’ll also be interesting to see if they remix …And Justice For All, which has to be the worst-sounding great album I’ve ever heard.
