It seems very likely that at least 3 songs from the 2nd disc of Face Value are mp3 sourced: the demos of Please Don’t Ask, This Must Be Love and Against all Odds are all confirmed as 95%-99% mpeg sourced by Audiochecker.
Please Don’t Ask in particular reveals awful sonic artifacts usually caused by some old mp3 encoders. The bootleg version which circulates among fans since a long time is much better sound quality wise, and this officially released version is clearly a bad mp3 of the bootleg version.
Buyers beware!

Just received the Phil Collins boxset with Face Value and Both Sides. It’s actually nice packaging IMO with brief liner notes from Phil. I wish he would have done a track by track analysis, but that’s just a small complaint. The remastering is brilliant. The demos on Face Value obviously were recorded off of cassettes so the sound is so-so. I love the demo of Roof is Leaking (with Eric Clapton) and Please Don’t Ask. Although we all know the bonus CD tracklistings could have been much better (maybe he’s saving the other sides for those other “curated” projects promised), the live tracks are good actually. can’t wait for the remaining released.

Not really a deluxe edition, but surely the big news this week is the release of Wild Man Fischer’s “An Evening With…” on CD at last!!! (And Gail only recently passed away, too.)

Cilla Black!! Regretfully, Capitol Records, her 1960’s US label, really didn’t put much effort into promoting her, or helping her gain greater success in the US market. They even declined issuing the song Paul McCartney wrote for her, Step Inside Love. !! She had so many wonderful recordings, mostly unknown/unreleased in the States. And yet- Elvis Presley kept her song, You’re My World, as a constant record in his personal jukebox at Graceland.
I’ll buy this album series. I hope her 1970’s album/single output finally sees total release, for the EMI years and beyond.
Thank You Paul, for posting the news! Much appreciated!
