Live 1976-1998: Tonight’s The Night is a new Rod Stewart live anthology to be released by Warner Bros. Records in March 2014.

The chronological collection spans 20 years and features 58 previously unreleased tracks starting in 1976 circa A Night On The Town and working its way through the years with live renditions of classics like Maggie May, Every Picture Tells A Story, You Wear It Well, Some Guys Have All The Luck and Do Ya Think I’m Sexy – to name but a few. The selection ends in 1998 rather unpromisingly (at least on paper) with covers of Britpop-era tracks from Primal Scream and Oasis.

Warner Bros. Records’ other Rod boxes include the excellent rarities set The Rod Stewart Sessions 1971-1998 from 2009, as well as the now repackaged Storyteller box (originally issued in 1989) which is currently being virtually given away on Amazon UK.

How can they leave off Young Turks – one of his biggest hits? I’ll never understand the logic behind what songs are selected for compilations like this!

Actually I was talking about newspaper and magazine reviews, not amazon or fan sites. I do not idolize him at all, I have one Rod Stewart CD in my collection, a double CD greatest hits from years ago. This will be my last posting on this subject as I can see you are getting upset and defensive.

Sorry, I really think we are talking about different books. I don’t know how you could read Rod’s autobiography and come away with that impression of him. You must be very easily shocked / offended. Out of curiosity I googled the book last nigh to read many of the reviews. They are overwhelmingly positive, not one of them suggested that Rod was whiney, feeling sorry for himself or looking for public sympathy.

Bob, we are talking about the same book. Yes, he whined after Rachel Hunter left him, but he treated her predecessors with such insensitivity, that one couldn’t feel sorry for him. I’ve read several books on Elton, the Stones, and Lennon. Never any whining or seeking of sympathy from the reader. Again, I don’t care if Roddy betrayed all his wives and girlfriends. I just couldn’t bear his looking to the readers for sympathy. I didn’t dislike the bloke, only lost respect for him.

Are you sure we are even talking about the same book? I think Rod Stewart is probably the least whiney rock star there is. In every interview I have ever seen or read with him he comes across as thoroughly decent and content, and that includes his autobiography. He always says how blessed he has been in having had such a fantastic life. The only possible whine in the book is when his wife Rachel Hunter left him. He was just being honest.
Of all the terrible things that humans are capable of, for me, Rod Stewart having plenty of girlfriends and three wives is not really so bad.
If you really think that it is I would not suggest you read books on Elton, The Stones, John Lennon etc

Vince, I don’t want or expect squeaky clean rock autobiographies. In fact, the decadent ones can be more entertaining. As long as the rock star doesn’t whine or mine for sympathy endlessly like Roddy did. That just makes you want to throw up.

Seems some people prefer their rock and rollers squeaky clean. If so, there are plenty of Osmonds albums on the 99 cent bins.

Bob, you liked him because he was so charming. But his charm masked his dishonest and insensitive behaviours over many decades, which caused so much pain to several women. And he went on an on endlessly throughout the book about his quest for love and happiness. My god! the guy is wealthy beyond imagination, and gorgeous women throw themselves at him!. Why would anyone feel sorry for or root for a guy who has such an unimaginable advantage? I would have been much more interested if he had focused more on his creative process, rather than whining about his hopes and dreams for his personal life, which he clearly didn’t deserve to achieve.

Lenny, I couldn’t disagree with you more! I read Rod’s autobiography and thought it was a fantastic read. In my opinion he comes across as a really nice guy. I am not a fan of his later music at all, but reading his book made me really like him.

Great singer and great songs! Unfortunately, after reading his autobiography I wasn’t very impressed with this guy. Lots of stories of how he cheated on girlfriends and wives and destroyed some lives, and he made a big effort and did some whining to try and make the reader feel sorry for and empathize with him, and get the reader to support him in his hope to find true love and happiness, whilst he lives in a mansion, lives the high life, and gorgeous young models throw themselves at him. Sorry, Roddy, nobody gives a toss.

It’s a good price at the moment too, £15 for 4 discs.
My GF and I went to see him at the O2 last year (free tickets, bad seats) and we had a blast.
Neither of us were big fans but every song was well known to us, with varying levels of cheese of course, and allowing for the one song his daughter sang.
We said after the concert that we’d buy something in lieu of the free tickets so have ordered this.
