  1. Head-scratcher. Who is the intended audience? Is there a single person in the world who just discovered the band and thought: “Oh, I just love that new Simple Minds song. I’ll pick up their new greatest hits.”

As others have noted, there are plenty of SM compilations. As for me, I don’t think they’ve made a single memorable song in over 20 years.

But beyond that, there are tons of album tracks from their first five albums that are awesome, but that either the band or the record company doesn’t value enough to republish. Among them:

    Premonition
    Fear of Gods
    Thirty Frames
almost all of Sons & Sister
    ALL of New Gold Dream
    much of Sparkle

Again, who is the intended audience here?

  2. I always liked Simple Minds. Their biggest chart success was when I was in college so I listened to them but for some reason other than Sparkle In The Rain and Real Life I never picked up any of their albums. Last year I got the x5 compilation and I rate it as one of my favorite music purchases of the year. While this GH compilation looks good, I’m going to hold off and hope they release a “x5 part 2” package. Given Simple Minds career releases (to date) their catalog lends itself perfectly to 2 more x5 type releases. The next box should cover 1984-1995 (Sparkle through Good News For The Next World, 5 albums). Then x5 part 3 would cover 1998-2009 (Neapolis through Graffiti Soul, 5 albums, or 6 is they were to include Our Secrets Are The Same). Those 3 plus an odds and ends release would be a great way to get their catalog on our shelves.

But when is the music industry logical?

  3. I’m a huge fan of their early albums but by the late eighties I lose interest. However, their last few albums have been OK but inessential compared to the likes of New Gold Dream and Empires And Dance. Regarding the track listing I too feel that the 3CD edition is excellent. If they include all the 7″ as opposed the full length album versions then I will definitely get this. Does anyone have any information regarding which versions will be included?

  4. This compilation trumps some others by being chronological. The 2CD version has nearly all the UK singles. Most missed by me is Sweat in Bullet. The 3CD has more songs than were released as singles, but also eschews the Prince cover Sign ‘O the Times in favor of the b-side (AA-side?) Let It All Come Down, which is their own composition, and the single was actually an EP, so fair enough how they want to call that shot. It will be a real boon if these are all the appropriate single edits.

Otherwise… the 2CD set is not a bad compilation. Priced right, I would get it.

  5. My favourite band. I already have all albums three times , but pre order 2cd + 3cd edition from amazon. I know that i’m completely fool, but i can’t help myself. Anyway, ‘Broken Glass Park’ live is brilliant. I hope that studio version is also brilliant. Not completely happy with ‘Stagefright’.

  6. just what we need, another Simple Minds greatest hits collection – have we not already had at least 3 of these already ?? Just but the original albums or the X5 boxset i say !

  7. The 3CD version is a pretty extensive overview of their career thus far. Now to wait and see if it includes any rare edits or single versions… Also, a big fat booklet would be nice. That was the only thing missing from the X5 box set.
