Smashing Pumpkins / Mellon Collie six-disc deluxe set on the way
The Smashing Pumpkins are set to reissue their 1995 opus, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness on 3 December as a six disc box set (5CD+DVD) and a four LP vinyl set.
The Deluxe Box Set’s 5 CDs include 64 bonus tracks of previously unreleased material or alternate versions of Mellon Collie-era songs, and its DVD features a live show filmed at the Brixton Academy, London (1996) and bonus performances from the German music television show Rockpalast (1996).
This content comes housed in a 12 x 12 lift-top box with magnetic closure and velvet-lined disc holder. The package includes 2 books containing personal notes, lyrics, new collage artwork, plus a Decoupage kit for creating your own scenes from the Mellon Collie universe. The bonus content and special features were curated from the band’s archives by Billy Corgan and remastered for the first time from the original master tapes by Bob Ludwig.
Like the Gish and Siamese Dream reissues, Mellon Collie has reimagined cover art with titles removed. The 4LP vinyl version will come as some relief to fans who missed out the first time around, since the original 3LP release goes for extremely high prizes on the used market. The vinyl release will have the original record spread over eight sides of 180g vinyl for optimum sound.

What i don’t understood is in reality how you’re not really a lot more well-liked
than you might be right now. You’re so intelligent. You already know therefore significantly relating to this matter, made me for my part imagine it from numerous various angles. Its like men and women don’t
seem to be involved until it is one thing to do with Lady gaga!
Your personal stuffs nice. All the time care for it up!
Put in my preorder, have been waiting on this one!
Where will this be sold in the UK? And will it be available as a download?
Amazon will sell it but for some reason they are a bit slower getting the pre-order listings up. Not sure about downloads.
I would wait a few days and check to see what bundles will be available through the Smashing Pumpkins web site. I’m sure that the site at least will offer downloads. Lossless audiophile quality tracks were available for the previous reissues. I would also suspect that there will be some incentive exclusive to the site. Last time it was digital files of the songs on the cassette. (Folks were irked that a download code didn’t come with the physical set, yes, and those tracks didn’t come with the digital version available at iTunes, Amazon, etc.)
I’m wondering if the Double Door show will be saved for an Aeroplane re-issue. They may need some extra incentive to buy that one, and a show like that might do it. Either way, I like the focus on demos on the tracklist for MCIS.
I agree that $130 is asking way too much. Billy has been leading us the edge of a fiscal cliff, with each release being more fanciful and more expensive. I’m anxious to see what the download price will be because I have no desire to buy the physical set. I’m not holding out much hope that it’ll be streaming on Spotify to preview first, as was the case with Pisces.
There was talk earlier about including in this set live tracks from the Pumpkins’ Double Door shows previewing material later included on Mellon Collie. Then there was mention of releasing that material separately. At this point in the process of reassessing the SP back catalog, it’s obvious that the attitude is “there’s tons of material, and this is the best we have at the moment.” That is, no historical rationale for the song selection in these sets, seeing that there are so few unissued completed songs and the periods of the releases overlap.
I want off this train, after I get a two-disc compilation of all the Aeroplane songs and a Machine I/II set.
I meant to say Pisces was not streamable, so I don’t expect MC to be, either.
I’m not really a fan, but even I have to say this looks impressive.
Stole my line from me! This looks incredible, even from someone who really doesn’t like the band.
Yes, the Aeroplane box is meant to get a re-issue of its own. But since the purpose of that box was to release a lot of “leftovers” from Mellon Collie, I’m not sure how much will be left after the Mellon Collie re-issue. Unless he releases a full version of each song in the Pistachio Medley…… Personally, I just hope the price drops a bit. I paid $25 for each of the first two 3 disc sets and $30 for the 3 disc plus set PI set. But a jump to $130 for this 6 disc set seems really steep to me.
I’m kicking myself for not buying the triple LP set in 1995, which would have funded these further adventures in the Mellon Collie universe.
I fear that the overlap between Mellon Collie and Aeroplane–much like that of Pisces and Gish/SD–will make for another strange assemblage of songs. Unless, that is, Billy sticks to demos, alternate versions, and live tracks. But the chances of that are next to zero.
On Amazon it says that there will be 64 “bonus tracks of previously unreleased material or alternate versions of Mellon Collie era songs”: I hope they’ve included the tracks of the “Aeroplane flies high” boxset and the two extra tracks of the triple vinyl (that I own, but I’ve never played it)…
I read an interview with Corgan where they said there would actually also be an expanded re-issue of the Aeroplane Flies High boxset following this re-issue.
Oh. Thanks Michael for the info.
Too bad, the “Aeroplane” could be included with “Mellon Collie”, IMHO.
