Streetwalkers / I'm Walking, The Complete Streetwalkers 1974-77

streetwalkers_Imwalking

Snapper Music’s Madfish imprint have really thrown the kitchen sink at I’m Walking, The Complete Streetwalkers 1974-77 a fun-packed limited edition box set in tribute to under-the-radar Seventies rock band Streetwalkers

Emerging from the ashes of Family, Streetwalkers produced five albums with three different line-ups in less than three years. The quirkiness of Family’s output was replaced by a harder-rocking sound that knitted well with Roger Chapman’s distinctive voice, and was enhanced by Charlie Whitney’s innovative bluesy guitar-playing and the soulful stylings of guitarist/vocalist Bobby Tench.

Strictly limited to 1,500 copies, I’m Walking is a comprehensive 15-CD collection designed to emulate the high packaging-production values of Madfish’s previous Family box set, Once Upon A Time. Billed in the PR blurb as a ‘new box of wonder’, I’m Walking comes complete with – deep breath – the following items:

  • • Certificate Of Authenticity personally signed by Roger Chapman and Bobby Tench.
  • • Five original Streetwalkers albums on CD in mini LP Japanese-style gatefold sleeves
  • • CD of BBC Recordings from 1974-’76.
  • • Walkers Put The Boot In – a three-CD set of unreleased 1976 radio and bootleg recordings
  • • Two-CD set of previously unreleased live recordings from the 1977 tour
  • • Two additional live CDs – ‘Rip It Up’ Live at the Rainbow and De Montfort
  • • Two CD replica singles with exclusive B-sides
  • • Ninety-two-page hardback book tracing the band’s history, featuring many previously unseen photos and memorabilia reproductions.
  • • Replica A1 US poster for Red Card
  • • Vicious But Fair – replica 1977 tour programme
  • • Replica skin transfer sheet originally produced to promote the Vicious But Fair album

Think that’s everything… oh no, hang on, forgot about the four replica album beer mats. Never forget the beer mats…

All in all, it looks like a fair old treat for hardy Streetwalkers fans who can afford it. And bearing in mind their former label boss Nigel Granger’s assertion that “Streetwalkers never really captured what they did live on their studio albums – I actually used to like their John Peel sessions more than their albums”, perhaps the 15-track BBC Recordings disc featuring ‘In concert’ and ‘John Peel’ sessions is the jewel in this career-defining set.

I’m Walking, The Complete Streetwalkers 1974-77 is released on 15 January.

Just had a message from Burning Shed to say that :

“We are sorry for the delay in shipping your Streetwalkers box set but we have now been told that they will be delivered to us on Monday (18th January).”

A few more days patience required!!!!

Philip

“I understand that Madfish are some way along the path to a projected 17 disc Wishbone Ash box.”

Hopefully not a rehash of the various Powell-years items, but a full appraisal of the band’s career.

Steven

Fingers crossed the Streetwalkers does well and we get a Roger Chapman solo box (or boxes – the guy has had a long career) green lit at some point….

I do wish record companies would think about the scheduling of these boxes a bit more – I still have Christmas to pay for. And my tax return. The timing is NOT good…

Philip

I’ve got the Chappo and Live In Hamburg DeLuxe CDs that Madfish / Snapper put out by Roger Chapman last year and they’re both pretty good to my jaded ears. Really looking forward to getting this one next week. Byrning Shed reckon shipping starting on Monday!!!

Colin Harper

I understand that Madfish are some way along the path to a projected 17 disc Wishbone Ash box.

Colin Harper:

Please tell me more about the Wishbone Ash box set as this is the first I’ve heard of it.

Is it every album (I only really care about 1970-82) remastered with bonus cuts and the live albums?

Chris

I haven’t heard this set — maybe Snapper has changed how they’ve done things — but all the things I’ve bought from Snapper in the past have had serious quality control issues associated with the CDs themselves.

Routinely, archival issues I’ve bought that’s been released by Snapper have had serious glitches in the digital domain that appear to be issues with the disc masters, as I went on to obtain multiple copies of the sets involved and they appear in the same locations on the same tracks with every copy.

Snapper’s stuff tends to be *really* cheap; but from my experience, there’s an additional cost.

SDE Hall of Fame

I’ve got the Small Faces box which I thought was excellent.

Steve Benson

For those who don’t need 11 horses or rums I hope the individual albums will be available too.

Rare Glam

I’ve ordered this set purely for the beer mats, I’ll toss the rest!! But seriously, I thought twice when I saw how much live stuff there is. Not because it’s live, I lo0ve live, but conceanrs over sound quality. Are they all from sound boards or are any of them from audience tapes I wonder, especially those three bootlegs? Great companion box to the Family set.

Runicen

Slight typo in the tracklist on disc 4. While “Viscous But Fair” would be a great title for a lost Dracula movie, I don’t think it’s the right title here. =)

I’ve already pre-ordered my copy of the set. ImportCDs has a pretty decent price for it as of the moment. Hoping they get stock, but I’m willing to take my chances.

Even if this set turned out to be a bomb, it feels fair to pick up a new copy since my copy of the Family box set was a second-hand buy. Like to see at least a little cash make its way back to Chapman.

SDE Hall of Fame

Thanks, typo corrected!

Craig

The misspelling is present on the Madfish site as well.

Philip

Absolutely love the Streetwalkers. Got this on order, hoping sound quality is up on the BGO 2-fers that are currently on my shelf.

Stunning looking set.

Mark Bumgardner

I saw them open for Black Sabbath in Germany in late ’75 (or early ’76). I had no idea they released that number of studio albums. Roger’s voice is a bit of an acquired taste, but they were a rocking band, for sure.
